  • Is it practically useful to decline GUI for a newbie in Ubuntu?

    My Ubuntu is 12.04. I have just started learning Linux and Ubuntu in particular. To remember commands quicker, I'd like to decline GUI. But there are some problems. I don't know where installed programs are to launch them. For example, I have a pdf file. I know that there is a program to view such files. Should it be the case of GUI, I would just click on the pdf-file, and have a look that I use Document Viewer 3.4.0. Then I would like to launch Firefox Web Browser. Even if I know it is installed, how to find the file to be launched using just CLI is a mystery to me. Could you suggest me anything.

  • Cannot boot Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu 13.04

    So I boot up my computer after installing Ubuntu 13.04. Grub correctly shows me all available boot options and I am able to boot to Ubuntu. However, when I try to boot into Windows 7, grub hangs at a purple screen. I have an HP laptop. It came with all four primary partitions taken up by the Windows bootloader, the actual Windows partition, one called HP_TOOLS, and another for HP Restore. I was able to back up and delete HP_TOOLS and the recovery partition, and change my disk type from Dynamic to Basic (GParted doesn't recognize Dynamic drives). I then booted into a live session of Ubuntu and made two partitions with GParted: one large partition for storage space that I could use between the two operating systems (sda4), and another extended partition (sda3) which contained Ubuntu (sda6) and it's swap space (sda5). It currently looks like this: I'm not sure if the second paragraph is actually relevant, I just want you to know all the variables in the equation. Thank you in advance for helping this poor noob.

  • HTML5, PHP, JAVA or asp?

    I am building a new website for a friend of mine. Its all plain html, and a server side include. The problem is to build static pages for 500 products would not be fun to create, or maintain. So i am forced to at least put dynamic information on these pages based off a spreadsheet, or dynamic pages all together. What i want to do is have a spreadsheet that can be used to keep track of in stock quantity, sku numbers, ecc.. that way i dont have to update hundreds of pages every night. He can just edit the spreadsheet and the pages will automatically adjust. I am a busy man, and i am not asking anyone to just give me the answer. But to save some time what is more worth learning to get this done fastest. HTML5, PHP, JAVA asp, or is there somehthing else better suited?

  • Changes made to cli's php.ini not taking effect

    I have two php.ini files - /etc/php.ini which loads in case of cli /opt/lampp/etc/php.ini which loads in case of browser. I am able to use PHP's Mailparse extension after adding the line extension=mailparse.so in the /opt/lampp/etc/php.ini and restarting lampp. But I am not able to load the same in case of command line - getting PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function mailparse_msg_create() in ... mailparse_msg_create() is a part of the Mailparse extension. I tried by relogging with the user after making the change and even restarting the system. What needs to be done so that the change takes effect. Update I checked that php -i | grep 'Configuration File' gives PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so' - /usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Configuration File (php.ini) Path => /etc Loaded Configuration File => /etc/php.ini Update 2 I copied the mailparse.so from /opt/lampp/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626 and put it in /usr/lib/php/modules. I added extension=mailparse.so to /etc/php.ini as well. But it still showed this warning PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library ... As told by Lekensteyn, I did ldd /usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so and got ldd: warning: you do not have execution permission for /usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so' So I gave execute permission. Then ldd /usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so showed linux-gate.so.1 => (0x00110000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x0011d000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x003aa000) which looks normal. BUt now, running php command says PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so' - /usr/lib/php/modules/mailparse.so: undefined symbol: mbfl_name2no_encoding in Unknown on line 0

  • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

    Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.   • Citrix Performance monitoring

    Hi people, I has a strange thing which appears on my Citrix Farm today. My users are equiped with a Thin client Axel Model 80F, and today, one of them sustained a problem on it. He opened a citrix's Publish Desktop session (Host by a farm of Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Servers), he loaded Lotus Notes and a mail who contained an PDF attached file. Once he has opened his PDF File, his session has freezed. We've just reboot the Thin Client, and log in again on the session (which hasn't been closed during the process). Once we have log in again, we try to read the pdf and once again afer half a page the session freeze again (I can see the mouse moving on the screen but can make anything). Then I close the session, reboot correctly the thin client, and "Tada" with the same manipulationsn averything is correct and we don't facing any freeze. Well Now my question is: Is that bug came from the thin client or the server about you? I've checked on my farm and I don't have any alert from the Citrix's Monitoring console logs. According to me it's due to the Thin Client BUT I ddon't have enought monitoring tools to be sure of that. So do you have some quite godd monitoring tools or method?   • Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 on Windows 7 print to network share gives error

    I've recently upgraded a client's workstations to brand new computers, with Windows 7 Professional. The server is still Windows Server 2003. The server has 2-3 file shares that get mapped to users' workstations as drives. The client has also upgraded from Acrobat 6.0 to 9.0 Pro. Since the upgrade, when the client tries to print to the Adobe PDF printer (aka convert something to PDF via the printer interface), it gives an error in the queue if the file is being saved on the network drive. If I instead provide a local path, the file "prints" fine. Additionally, if I change the Adobe PDF printer's settings to "don't spool, print directly to printer", it prints to the network share fine, but then it resets that setting every time. Things I've checked for: Permissions on the network share. The user and the computer has full access. We even gave the "Everyone" ibject full access. Reinstall Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 Run updates to upgrade to 9.3.4 Has anyone else bumped into such a problem? The support fellows from Adobe are just taking me around in circles. They don't seem to have a clue either.

    I have a feeling that question itself looks stupid but it is not. Please let me clarify. I have dynamic DNS with BIND and NIS configured at my LAN and have laptop which I am using in both wireless and wired mode. I mean that sometimes I have to use wired interface to achieve higher throughput but most of time I don't need it and using wireless mode. Everything works great. Issue is that I want both interfaces get same IP from DHCP. Just for convenient firewall setup. If I add both hosts to dhcp in this manner # bt wireless host bt { hardware ethernet 00:1f:1f:62:60:28; fixed-address 172.16.77.110; } # bt wired host bt { hardware ethernet 00:14:22:b7:5a:de; fixed-address 172.16.77.110; } DHCP says logs following message dhcpd: Dynamic and static leases present for 172.16.77.110 dhcpd: Remove host declaration bt-wired or remove 172.16.77.110 dhcpd: from the dynamic address pool for 172.16/16 Host records are added outside of any subnet, but it makes no difference if I put them there, effect is still the same. This is not critical but either is not my whim because even if DHCP seems to work fine for that "bt" host, I cannot make connection TO it from remote machine anymore with this definitely incorrect DHCP config. I'd be thankful if one spares a minute for advice about how to configure DHCPD correctly. UPDATE. I realize that there's a soulution to assign different hostname in DHCP config but would like to use benefits of short host names.

  • Can not copy files from NTFS partition

    I am experiencing a weird problem. I was running Xubuntu on my laptop until yesterday that I had to delete Xubuntu and install Windows. I had a NTFS partition on my Xubuntu that I kept some files on it. Today after installing windows I wanted to move all the files from that partition to an external HDD. I selected all files and folders and clicked on Copy, then I went to the HDD and clicked on paste but nothing happened. I can not do that. I do not know why. I copy the files, and wherever I click paste, nothing happens. If I try to copy the files and folders one by one, I can copy some of them, but some of them do not move. The other problem I have is that I can not open some files, in particular pdf files. When I click on pdf files I get this error: There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found. Also, I cannot play some mp4 files. I can not open some jpg and txt files. I get this error The directory name is invalid. So in summary, after removing Xubuntu and installing windows 7 I have the following problems with one of the NTFS partitions on my internal drive: Can not copy or cut all folders and files from that partition to any other partition - I also do not get any errors. Can copy some folders and files Can not access some pdf, jpeg, txt and mp4 files and get the above errors. I should also mention I did not change anything for this partition during the installation or formatting the other partitions.

    Evan Anderson mentioned in another solution you could buy a LTO-4 (autoloader, 1 tape / day) - $4,566.00 (the discussion included total cost of tapes for a specific rotation.) but I don't know specifics on what he or you would recommend for the actual drive and if necessary controller. Show me a newegg URL or CDW, Dell, or HP, or whatever your favorite vendor would be for your solution if you don't mind looking it up or just give me a brand and a model number and I'll be glad to do the leg work myself. I currently have on have on hand an external LTO 3 drive that uses LVD SCSI interface (and thus have a controller card that has an external LVD SCSI connector). If that card isn't sufficient to interface to a LTO 4 drive let me know. http://www.fujifilmusa.com/shared/bin/LTO_Overview.pdf shows minimum tape speeds for LTO4 and other LTO formats. It looks like the IBM LTO4 actually has a lower minimum speed than the IBM LTO3. Either way my average server is too slow to feed LTO3/4 without shoeshining so I'm looking for a drive with a low minimum write speed. If you trust the PDF from 2008 that makes my choices IBM LTO 4 full height IBM LTO 4 half height HP LTO 4 half height but presumably there are other options out there that weren't mentioned in the fuji PDF. Again I'm looking for a specific recommendation on a drive to buy (and the controller if needed).

    Looking for another application/technology: A number of years ago, I read about a novel way to authenticate and log on to a laptop. The user simply had to hold the laptop in the air and execute a simple series of tilts and flips to the laptop. By logging accelerometer data, this creates a unique signature for the user. Even if an attacker watched and repeated the exact same motions, the attacker could not replicate the user's movements closely enough. I am looking for information about this technology again, but I can't find anything. It may have been an actual feature on a laptop, or it may have just been a research project. I think I read about it in a magazine like Wired. Does anyone have more information about authentication via unique accelerometer signatures?   • Add and remove letterhead in Word document

    Our company has letterheaded paper (pre-printed paper with our logo on it). Whenever we send something out by mail, we print it on that paper. However, when we send the same document via email, we convert it to a PDF file. Now the problem is: when converting a Word document to PDF, it should contain the letterhead. When printing the same document on paper, it should not (or else the letterhead would be printed twice). Currently, we are using two different Word document templates - one with letterhead, one without. So whenever we want to add or remove the letterhead, we have to create a new document with the other template and copy and paste everything over. Nasty solution. What I'm looking for is some simple way to switch the letterhead on and off. What I've tried so far: Switching the template: There does not seem to be a simple way to switch the template for an existing document. Using a picture watermark: Our letterhead goes all the way to the border of the page. (No printer supports this, of course, but it is fine for export to PDF.) Apparently depending on the current default printer, Word will not allow a borderless watermark, instead shifting the image around. Using the page header: When editing the page header, I can insert pictures at arbitrary positions, which is great. However, I could not find a way (short of macros) to enable/disable just the pictures in the header. (The text should remain there.)

    I have a busy Apache server serving only dynamic PHP+MySQL pages. It is a prefork Apache, version 2.2.4 with following config: KeepAlive off StartServers 8 MinSpareServers 32 MaxSpareServers 64 ServerLimit 512 MaxClients 512 MaxRequestsPerChild 4000 MaxClients/ServerLimit used to be set to 256, but I got the following error in error_log so I increased it: [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting It seems to work now, but I have a doubt. Looking at MySQL log of queries, I have a couple hundred clients per seconds, but "ps ax" only shows 8, 9 or 10 processes running: [root@engine ~]# ps ax | grep http | wc -l 10 I even got this many processes when the above error message was shown in error_log. This made me investigate further.   • Allow opening a new tab with Ctrl+T on all websites in Firefox

    In Firefox, certain websites and plugins (Adobe PDF Plugin) appear to "capture" the Control key, so that when I try to open a new tab using "Ctrl+t", nothing happens - or worse, something unexpected happens. Examples: On the Codecademy site, while editing code, Ctrl+T either does nothing, or (when Flash is disabled) switches the position of the two characters next to the cursor. When viewing PDF's with the Adobe PDF Plugin, Ctrl+T does nothing. Is there a way to disable this "feature"? I would like "Ctrl+t" to always "talk" to Firefox! Edit: After searching superuser deeper, this question is very similar to the questions: "How to prevent keystroke grabbing/hijacking by websites in Firefox?" "How do I prevent pages I visit from overriding selected Firefox shortcut keys?". The answers to these questions are interesting and relevant, but do not give a method on how to disable combinatinos such as "Ctrl+t". Maybe a modified Greasemonkey script is the easiest solultion. Edit 2 - Attempt at a solution The following UserScript (Use GreaseMonkey to install it) successfully captures Ctrl+t on some sites (Google Search site, for instance - PopUp "Gotcha" appears), but not on the Codecademy site.     I'm struggling to understand the problem I'm seeing so please accept my apology if the question is vague. I'm running a classic asp app in IIS7 and everything seems to work fine except for one issue that has me stumped. Basically, files can be downloaded from the server which is done using the sendBinary method of Persits ASP Upload component. This component works fine for uploading etc it's just the downloading I have a problem. The strange thing is, I cannot have a pure asp page that serves the binary file. Everything works fine in II6, but in II7 there is a strange problem.   • NVIDIA Tesla K20C in Dell PowerEdge R720xd --- power cables

    I am trying to put an NVIDIA Tesla K20C into a Dell PowerEdge R720xd. I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the power requirements of the card. First, here is a picture of two pages of the same manual, which seems contradictory to me. One page says only a single connector is required, while the next page says both are required. The entire manual for the card can be found here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/PDF/kepler/Tesla-K20-Active-BD-06499-001-v02.pdf Here is an photo taken of the power connections on the card: And here is a photo of where those connectors need to go, onto the PCI-E riser of the r720xd: Neither the R720xd NOR the GPU came with the necessary cables. And given what appears to be a contradiction in the GPU manual (above), I'm not even sure at this point what we actually need. I have searched high and low online for things like 2x6 pin PCI-E to 8 pin male-to-male and so on, and for the life of me cannot find what we need.
