• Crafting an effective php/web programmer job post template [closed]

  I am looking to create a job post to get a satisfactory assistant programmer / templater. Specifically, a php & web programmer. I am, however, afraid of forgetting important things. So, are there resources you can suggest for templates for things to ask and things to tell in a job post for a programmer? Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find similar questions on this site, so there may be duplicate questions out there that I could use but just didn't find. Right now I know that my -requirements- are so generic that they're going to get me in trouble with a spam of applications. e.g. the candidate must know php, must be able to seperate php from html. So I'm looking for criteria that are must-haves, must-mentions, or a general template to try to avoid a "lemon". • Why not sync folders outside home with ubuntu-one?

  It took me a while to find out that with ubuntu-one I can sync only folders in my home-folder. On all other folders the ubuntu-one - option is available in preferences, but the actual actions are greyed out. The ubuntu-faq is quite clear on that: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/CanISyncAFolderOutsideMyHomeFolder But I actually wonder why and if this is going to change and if there is a trick around it (an other one than setting my home to /) I personally dont have any important data in my home-folder other than the program-configs. All documents, pictures, music are on a folder called /data that is actually on a different partition. That makes it much easier when one wants to reinstall ubuntu.

• Ubuntu 12.04, Intel Centrino 1030 Wireless-N 1030 not able to connect to wireless

  I saw several similar threads, but none really does it... I have 12.04 precise x64 installed and things worked great for some 10 days. Then it all stopped - I wasn't able to connect any more. Even more, things were so scre*ed up that it were showing other network's name while connecting :( I have an Asus K53SM-SX054. Here's the text from dmesg related to my card: http://fixee.org/paste/iaw23iw/ Basically, it's Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030. Not sure if it's important, I had Gnome with unity and then moved to KDE. Any ideas what to do? I'm on the verge of reinstalling things, but I already set plenty of things and have some things that I'd need to back up... and I'm rather lazy to go on with it :) EDIT: My wlan network is hidden. Not sure if this should have any influence.

• SSH access failure from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS VM

  I installed 2 VMs on VirtualBox. VM 1: Windows XP with FreeSSHd and PuTTY installed.IP address: 10.0.0.2 VM 2: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server Edition with OpenSSH installed.IP address: 10.0.0.3 From VM 1, I run PuTTY with the IP address of VM 2 (10.0.0.3) and port number 22. I get prompted to input the username and password of VM 2 and everything works fine.From VM 2, I run on the terminal (Ubuntu): ssh [email protected] , I get prompted to enter the password of VM 1. I do so, but it says my password is invalid (while it is the correct one). I even deactived the Firewall on VM 1, but still the problem is here: my password is not accepted from VM 2. Is this due to some settings maybe I must do on VM 1 (Windows XP) so as I can access it with SSH ? Maybe it has something to do with the Firewall of Windows XP ?Important information: ping 10.0.0.2 from VM 1 and ping 10.0.0.3 from VM 2 are working successfully.

• How to organize my site's file system properly?

  Doing some reading on Stack Overflow, I've found a lot of information suggesting that proper organization of a file system is crucial to a well-written web app. One of the key pieces of evidence is high-frequency references to "separation of concerns" in questions related to keeping programs organized. Now, I've found some information on organizing file systems (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard) from 2004. It raises only two concerns: first, the standard's a bit dated, so I believe it may be possible to do better given the changes in technology over the past 8 years; second, and most important, my application is very small compared to an entire Linux distro. I think that the file system should be organized very differently because of that. Here's what I'm looking at, currently: /scripts, /databases, /www -> /dev, /production -> login, router, admin pages, /sites -> content types, static pages /modules, /includes, /css, /media -> /module-specific-media

  Once upon a time, I heard from someone the only difference between programming languages is the syntax I wanted to deny it - to say that there are other fundamental aspects that truly set a language apart from others than just syntax. But I couldn't... So, can you? Whenever I search Google for something like "differences between programming languages", the results tend to be debates between two specific languages (I'd like something more general) - however, some of the aspects that people seemed to debate the most were: Object-Oriented Method/Operator overloading (I actually see this rather related to syntax) Garbage-Collection (While it seems like a good difference, for some reason it doesn't seem that "fundamental") What important aspects other than syntax can you think of?

  If I apply world_to_camera, perspective and camera_to_screen to my mesh, everything is okay. But if I premultiply given matrices (i.e. transform = world_to_camera * perpective * camera_to_screen) before applying, then it seems like only perspective has effect. If it is important... My 3d framework was written from scratch (test project for job interview). But it works flawlessly, or at least I think so. So, question. This is expected behaviour, or my implementation is wrong?

  I purchased Amnesia (game) from the Ubuntu Software Centre. It crashes on startup every time and I therefore want to return it for a refund. I can't find a way of doing so through the USC and, strangely, I can't find any trace of this having been asked before (maybe bad googling on my part). So the question is: how do I return a purchase and get a refund through the USC? EDIT Installing proprietary driver for AMD catalyst fixed Amnesia, but I still think this is an important question because it's basic customer service for any purchase. I'd therefore appreciate any answers anyone can find and I will continue to look too. If I find the answer I'll post it here.

  Hi, an upstart question (I think I have read all relevant man pages but could not find the answer there): What is the sense of using a "stop on ..." stanza in the definition of a job which is a task? The manuals tell us that such a job, after being started, just waits until its script (or exec stanza) is executed completely, and then stops automatically. Given that, what is the point in using "stop on ..." stanzas in such job definitions? For example, this is the job definition for Upstart's (very important) rc job in Natty 11.04 (leaving out comments and empty lines): start on runlevel [0123456] stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL] export RUNLEVEL export PREVLEVEL console output env INIT_VERBOSE task exec /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL IMHO, the job, after being started by a runlevel event, will be stopped automatically as soon as /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL has finished.   My secondary education was primarily focused on the sciences (Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics), but now I work primarily as a software developer. I feel like my resume is totally inappropriate for my current career goals. Listing laboratory skills and accomplishments is not the same as listing software development skills and accomplishments. Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any resources for writing a engineer's resume online that aren't older than 5 years. GitHub and StackExchange profiles seem like as important resume items as anything, yet I don't know how to list them on a resume, or whether they are appropriate at all. So what is a modern software engineer's resume supposed to look like?

• 2012&ndash;The End Of The World Review

  The end of the world must be coming.  Not because the Mayan calendar says so, but because Microsoft is innovating more than Apple.  It has been a crazy year, with pundits declaring not that the end of the world is coming, but that the end of Microsoft is coming.  Let’s take a look at what 2012 has brought us. The beginning of year is a blur.  I managed to get to TechEd in June which was the first time that I got to take a deep dive into Windows 8 and many other things that had been announced in 2011.  The promise I saw in these products was really encouraging.  The thought of being able to run Windows 8 from a thumb drive or have Hyper-V native to the OS told me that at least for developers good things were coming. I finally got my feet wet with Windows 8 with the developer preview just prior to the RTM.  While the initial experience was a bit of a culture shock I quickly grew to love it.  The media still seems to hold little love for the “reimagined” platform, but I think that once people spend some time with it they will enjoy the experience and what the FUD mongers say will fade into the background.  With the launch of the OS we finally got a look at the Surface.  I think this is a bold entry into the tablet market.  While I wish it was a little more affordable I am already starting to see them in the wild being used by non-techies. I was waiting for Windows Phone 8 at least as much as Windows 8, probably more.  The new hardware, better marketing and new OS features I think are going to finally push us to the point of having a real presence in the smartphone market.  I am seeing a number of iPhone users picking up a Nokia Lumia 920 and getting rid of their brand new iPhone 5.  The only real debacle that I saw around the launch was when they held back the SDK from general developers. Shortly after the launch events came Build 2012.  I was extremely disappointed that I didn’t make it to this year’s Build.  Even if they weren’t handing out Surface and Lumia devices I think the atmosphere and content were something that really needed to be experience in person.  Hopefully there will be a Build next year and it’s schedule will be announced soon.  As you would expect Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 development were the mainstay of the conference, but improvements in Azure also played a key role.  This movement of services to the cloud will continue and we need to understand where it best fits into the solutions we build. Lower on the radar this year were Office 2013, SQL Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012.  Their glory stolen by the consumer OS and hardware announcements, these new releases are no less important.  Companies will see significant improvements in performance and capabilities if they upgrade.  At TechEd they had shown some of the new features of Windows Server 2012 around hardware integration and Hyper-V performance which absolutely blew me away.  It is our job to bring these important improvements to our company’s attention so that they can be leveraged. Personally, the consulting business in 2012 was the busiest it has been in a long time.  More companies were ready to attack new projects after several years of putting them on the back burner.  I also worked to bring back momentum to the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Both the community and clients are excited about the new technologies that have come out in 2012 and now it is time to deliver. What does 2013 have in store.  I don’t see it be quite as exciting as 2012.  Microsoft will be releasing the Surface Pro in January and it seems that we will see more frequent OS update for Windows.  There are rumors that we may see a Surface phone in 2013.  It has also been announced that there will finally be a rework of the XBox next fall.  The new year will also be a time for us in the development community to take advantage of these new tools and devices.  After all, it is what we build on top of these platforms that will attract more consumers and corporations to using them. Just as I am 99.999% sure that the world is not going to end this year, I am also sure that Microsoft will move on and that most of this negative backlash from the media is actually fear and jealousy.  In the end I think we have a promising year ahead of us. del.icio.us Tags: Microsoft,Pundits,Mayans,Windows 8,Windows Phone 8,Surface

• Where to put git "remote" repo on purely local git setup?

  I overwrote and lost some important scripts and would like to setup version control to protect my stuff. I've used git before, and am familiar with commands, but don't understand where I would put my "remote" repository on an install set up on my own machine---the place I push/pull to. I don't intend to share or access remotely, I just want a little source control for my files. I followed the instructions here for setting up my staging area: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4249974/personal-git-repository But where do I put git "remote" repo on purely local git setup? How does the workflow work then? On the command in the above: git remote add origin ssh://myserver.com:/var/repos/my_repo.git Where should I put/name something like this? • Windows 8 and "Formerly known as Metro" apps, an experience with PDF app

  I'm slowing and surely getting used to Windows 8.  It is no doubt a slow process since I still run daily on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and 3 windows 7 box. A new quirk I found regarding Windows 8.  I never thought it was important to learn how to close a "formerly known as Metro" app (what do we call those these days?).  Then I attached a portable drive to my laptop and opened up a PDF file, and I couldn't safely remove the hard drive afterwards because I did not know how to close the PDF reader app. I have since learned that if you want to close an app, you can try Alt + F4 mouse over the top left corner and swipe down, right-click to close you app Windows Key + TAB, right-click to close the app All these make me wonder, how do you do this in a phone or tablet?

  Having read many books, there is a basic contradiction: Some say, "the goal of testing is to find bugs" while other say "the goal of the testing is to equalize the quality of the product", meaning that bugs are its by-products. I would also agree that if testing would be aimed primarily on a bug hunt, who would do the actual verification and actually provided the information, that the software is ready? Even e.g. Kaner changed his original definiton of testing goal from bug hunting to quality assesement provision but I still cannot see the clear difference. I percieve both as equally important. I can verify software by its specification to make sure it works and in that case, bugs found are just by products. But also I perform tests just to brake things. Also what definition is more accurate?
