  • Get extra hard drive space from windows 7

    I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 (dual-boot) on my laptop.For some reasons I want some more space in my Ubuntu partition.I have installed gParted in Ubuntu.Now is it recommended to get this required extra space from Windows 7 drive (*where my linux is installed *) directly using gParted? Will it cause damage to my boot loader or my data on the partition from where I wish to grab some space? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Make a temp network.

    I have a XAMPP test server running on my Windows Vista laptop. I also have a small wireless router. I would like be able to create a small temp network that could broadcast that network so any other computers connected to the wifi can go to localhost/ or an internal ip address and view my server.   • VirtualBox running Ubuntu 11.10 in Win7 is suddenly way too slow

    For two months I've been running Ubuntu 11.10 64bits in VirtualBox 4.1.12r77245 but today everything has been really slow, freezing all the time. I've had to restart the VM about 7 times already because Ubuntu just freezed in the middle of a task. I'm using my laptop, it's a LG P420 i5 with 4gb ram. I don't know if it could be an update of Ubuntu or VB, but I really need it to work. Any guesses? Thanks in advance

    So i had copied my windows 7 files from an installation disc to a flash disk which i had made bootable to format a mini laptop with no DVD drive, then by mistake broke the installation disc but still have the files in the flash disc, i want to burn them into another disk. Have tried burning them as data but wont work in some systems...so how can i get to create a bootable disc / disc iso image? I rily need help ASAP**

  • speakers muted automatically for some reason

    i have this weird problem that i'm not sure is specific to me, but more of a windows 7 or Lenovo laptop, so any help would be appreciable. the problem is as follows: Whenever i use skype, msn or any other thing that make noise, the speakers are muted automatically and i need to press the mute/unmute button to re-enable the sound. Does anyone know what can i do to disable windows 7 from doing it? Thanks.

When I transfer from my C drive to external hard drive it transfer only 3KB/sec. It take 30min to transfer 6MB. It is useless at the moment. Can anyone help me how to speed up please.     A friend's laptop DVD drive is suddenly no longer detected. It's going to be difficult to walk him through going into the BIOS (he's not local). I wonder if it is even worthwhile i.e. whether the BIOS settings can be corrupted by a virus. Are BIOS settings formatted in a standard way such that a virus writer would know what to alter? FYI, he did reinstall the OS and the drive is still not detected.

    I'm running a dual boot configuration on my laptop using Ubuntu 10.04b and Windows 7 Home Premium. Windows 7 was the original OS and I added a 'side by side' installation of Ubuntu. Ubuntu, however, shows up first on the list. I'd like to change this order and make Windows 7 first, followed by Ubunutu, then all of the recovery boots after that. Any help on how this is done?

    I'm running a Windows 7 on my reasonably modern laptop, when I open the context menu in Windows Explorer it really takes it time to show up (~10 seconds). There are some programs that have their commands added to it (an archive manipulation utility, an antivirus, a version control system and such). I think one of them freezes the operation. Is there a benchmark tool to measure it somehow or a tool to turn them off by one in Explorer without uninstalling them (which would be a penultimate measure, because use them)?

    I've had my HDD replaced, and now my computer is freezing every 1 to 5 minutes for 5 to 10 seconds. Actually, only active applications freeze (but it can be ANY application), usually when I click something, but sometimes by themselves. How can I check if this is HDD issue or software issue? I don't want to send my laptop for second HDD replacement right away, since the last service took 40 days, so I am looking for a tool that could confirm that this is a HDD issue.

    I have a file server with ubuntu-server installed it is accessed usually through smb either from pc (ubuntu) or laptop (windows 7) Sometimes it happens that folder names on the file server are changing to some meaningless name, like TOZC0N~L or TOJNL7~U The hard disks seem to be fine, and I can´t imagine that samba is messing up folder names. There is no rule really for this problem and I can´t reproduce it, it just happens sometimes Any ideas???
