• Linker, Libraries & Directories Information

  I've finished both my C++ 1/2 classes and we did not cover anything on Linking to libraries or adding additional libraries to C++ code. I've been having a hay-day trying to figure this out; I've been unable to find basic information linking to objects. Initially I thought the problem was the IDE (Netbeans; and Code::Blocks). However I've been unable to get wxWidgets and GTKMM setup. Can someone point me in the right direction on the terminology and basic information about #including files and linking files in a Cpp application? Basically I want/need to know everything in regards to this process. The difference between .dll, .lib, .o, .lib.a, .dll.a. The difference between a .h and a "library" (.dll, .lib correct?) I understand I need to read the compiler documentation I am using; however all compilers (that I know of) use linker and headers; I need to learn this information. Please point me in the right direction! :] So far on my quest I've found out: Linker links libraries already compiled to your project. .a files are static libraries (.lib in windows) .dll in windows is a shared library (.so in *nix) Thanks

• how to find the last instance of a setting in a config file

  I am trying to figure out how to find the last entry of a string in multiple config files across a server. Each of the strings will be in the /home/***usernamewouldbehere/public_html/typo3conf/localconf.php file In short - the last entry in the config files will point to the database server the application is utilizing - and we need to know which accounts point to which db server. While I can run something like this - grep "$_db_host" /home/*/public_html/conf/localconf.php It does not really help much because it gives us way to much information ... and not what we really need. What i really need to know is the last entry of this string $_db_host = 'xx'; and to sort them out in an export file Since the config files may have multiple entries (example below) $_db_host = 'localhost'; $_db_host = '10.0.1.234'; It would be great to list in a file all of those that have the entry for 'localhost' and then list all of those that have the entry for '10.0.1.234' (or whichever server there may be there) but even if I need to do that manually that would be great. I am not sure how to get to it using Awk - ... and really stuck What I am hoping for is something that would be piped as follows db_host = localhost /home/username1/www/conf/localconf.php db_host = localhost / home/username2/public_html/conf/localconf.php db_host= '10.1.2.23' /home/username55/public_html/conf/localconf.php hoping that helps you help me :-)

• Scaling Image to multiple sizes for Deep Zoom

  Lets assume I have a bitmap with a square aspect and width of 2048 pixels. In order to create a set of files need by Silverlight's DeepZoomImageTileSource I need to scale this bitmap to 1024 then to 512 then to 256 etc down to 1 pixel image. There are two, I suspect naive, approaches:- For each image required scale the original full size image to the required size. However it seems excessive to be scaling the full image to the very small sizes. Having scaled from one level to the next discard the original image and scale each sucessive scaled image as the source of the next smaller image. However I suspect that this would generate images in the 256-64 range with poor fidelity than using option 1. Note unlike with the Deep Zoom Composer this tool is expected to act in an on-demand fashion hence it needs to complete in a reasonable timeframe (tops 30 seconds). On the pluse side I'm only creating a single multiscale image not a pyramid of mutliple high-res images. I am outside my comfort zone here, any graphics experts got any advice? Am I wrong about point 2? Is point 1 reasonably performant and I'm worrying about nothing? Option 3?

• Ruby array, javascript and json issue

  Hey all, I am unable to get a highcharts plugin to render a chart in a rails application: http://github.com/loudpixel/highcharts-rails I believe it has something to do with the sql queries to the database placed in a ruby array, which the javascript is unable to intepret. Also, if I hard code values (e.g. :y = 1), it will render the chart properly. However, any database query will not render the chart properly. So I'm not sure exactly what the issue is. • How can I create "glass" effect on my own UIViews?

  Hi there, I'm working on an iPhone app that has some non-rectangular UI elements. Currently, I'm subclassing UIView, and in drawRect I'm using a CGPathRef to draw black border and a color-filled interior. I'd like to make these items look more like "buttons", though, so I'd like to have some of the same sort of "glass effects" that are used on e.g. the icons for an iPhone app (when you don't set UIPrerenderedIcon to true), or in other buttons. I hunted around, and found this, which seems to be close to what I need: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/422066/gradients-on-uiview-and-uilabels-on-iphone But I'm having difficulty figuring out how to clip the gradient to my shape. It seems like the mask property on the view would be the right place to go, which seems like it would call for me to create a new CALayer object, with the clipping somehow applied to it. I'm hoping there's some nice convenience function for doing this, though if I need to write something more complicated, that's OK, too. I'm just having difficulty figuring out how to apply the path as a mask. I'm unsure if I need to create a new drawing context and draw the path into it? And then use CGContextClip? I think I've got a lot of the right pieces figured out, I'm just having difficulty understanding how to assemble them. Could someone please point me in the right direction? (I'm happy to read more in the docs, just point me in the right direction, please.)

• Someone selling my GPL theme

  I'm having a tough time trying to figure out the best way to handle this. I've created a few themes last year, released them under a GPL license, and pretty much forgot about them. My goal was to put them out publicly as samples of my work. I've recently come across a site and was shocked they are selling one of my themes among several other themes (not mine) and other support and package systems. Anyway needless to say I'm not happy about this. I did not intend for those themes to be sold, and if they are to be sold, at least I would expect a percentage of those sales. I contacted the website asking how many they sold and that I'm the author of one of the themes they were selling. I eventually received a reply that my theme is a GPL theme and that this license allows them to sell it without compensation to me. WTF? Just the way the reply was worded pissed me off. There is no way to comment on the site to inform possible buyers that those themes can be downloaded from my site. What can I do about this? I realize now it was a bad choice to release them under that license. Is it possible to take back the theme from public distribution or is it out forever. Can I change it from GPL to another license at this point? Will that be sufficient to stop the sale of my theme in the future? Any insights are appreciated.

• Using Reflection.Emit to emit a "using (x) { ... }" block?

  I'm trying to use Reflection.Emit in C# to emit a using (x) { ... } block. At the point I am in code, I need to take the current top of the stack, which is an object that implements IDisposable, store this away in a local variable, implement a using block on that variable, and then inside it add some more code (I can deal with that last part.) • Save memory in Python. How to iterate over the lines and save them efficiently with a 2million line

  I have a tab-separated data file with a little over 2 million lines and 19 columns. You can find it, in US.zip: http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/. I started to run the following but with for l in f.readlines(). I understand that just iterating over the file is supposed to be more efficient so I'm posting that below. Still, with this small optimization, I'm using 10% of my memory on the process and have only done about 3% of the records. It looks like, at this pace, it will run out of memory like it did before. Also, the function I have is very slow. Is there anything obvious I can do to speed it up? • Questions on method to use: Facebook Business Page with Flash or Facebook Application?

  Hi there, I'm new to Facebook's Graph API / FBML / etc. So if at any point in my post I make a mistake or wrong assumption, please point them out. One of the projects that I am working on has a need to get data/info from an existing web site in addition to the friends list and such that FB can provide. This is for a platform that allows people from all over the world to help out in small scale projects that will benefit various communities. These projects are usually to help out people in unfortunate / less than ideal situations / living conditions so that their environment improves. You can read about it in detail at http://www.getitdone.org. The initial idea was to develop a Business Page (this is the same as a Fan Page right?) for each Project with a Static FBML tag to do the displaying. However, iframes are not allowed in Pages (as far as I know, iframes are only allowed in an FB Application). So it is no longer possible to get data from the web site to be displayed in the FB Page. So one of the options is to embed a Flash in the Page's Tab. I am fairly certain that the Flash can retrieve data on the User's friends and connections in an Application's context (because of all of those darn FB games that I'm addicted to :p). However, I would like to confirm if it can do the same if it's embedded in a Business Page's Tab. Could someone please confirm on this issue? The other option that we arrived at was (if the earlier options fails) to have an Application built instead. However, this means that we would need to create an Application for each Project. Not an ideal situation. Is there any other option that we have missed that can help us achieve the desired result with as little hassle as possible? • getting maps to accept a dynamically generated KML file?

  Hi. I have a button that launches the google maps app on my device via an intent. I want to be able to pass it a php page that generates a KML file. I have done this on a website before using the googlemaps api in JS - but it doesn't seem to work on Android. Is this just not possible, or are there other ways to construct the intent that might work?

• Custom routes/paths/roads on Google Maps

  Hey guys. I need to know, and as quickly as possible, if what I need is achievable. I need to be able to, using either V2 OR V3 (preferably 3), create paths which ignore buildings in a sense. I was trying to create even a kml file to draw out all of the paths myself, and then find some way to turn them on/off as needed. For example. The user wants to go from point A to point B. Between these points is a number of buildings. The user physically CAN walk through these buildings(it's a campus). I want to show them that on the map. This way you don't have to do a loop-de-loop around, say, a parking lot, just to get to the other end of it. If there is ANY way AT ALL to do this, I'd love to know. An example of what I require can be found here: http://www.uottawa.ca/maps/ It's all pre-determined paths based on the two inputs from the user into the dropdown menu. I can plainly see this. But I have no clue if a) this can be done in v3, and b) how on earth they did it themselves. Assistance required, and greatly appreciated!

• Combinatorial optimisation of a distance metric

  I have a set of trajectories, made up of points along the trajectory, and with the coordinates associated with each point. I store these in a 3d array ( trajectory, point, param). I want to find the set of r trajectories that have the maximum accumulated distance between the possible pairwise combinations of these trajectories. My first attempt, which I think is working looks like this: max_dist = 0 for h in itertools.combinations ( xrange(num_traj), r): for (m,l) in itertools.combinations (h, 2): accum = 0. for ( i, j ) in itertools.izip ( range(k), range(k) ): A = [ (my_mat[m, i, z] - my_mat[l, j, z])**2 \ for z in xrange(k) ] A = numpy.array( numpy.sqrt (A) ).sum() accum += A if max_dist < accum: selected_trajectories = h This takes forever, as num_traj can be around 500-1000, and r can be around 5-20. k is arbitrary, but can typically be up to 50. Trying to be super-clever, I have put everything into two nested list comprehensions, making heavy use of itertools: chunk = [[ numpy.sqrt((my_mat[m, i, :] - my_mat[l, j, :])**2).sum() \ for ((m,l),i,j) in \ itertools.product ( itertools.combinations(h,2), range(k), range(k)) ]\ for h in itertools.combinations(range(num_traj), r) ] Apart from being quite unreadable (!!!), it is also taking a long time. Can anyone suggest any ways to improve on this?

• C# parameters by reference and .net garbage collection

  I have been trying to figure out the intricacies of the .NET garbage collection system and I have a question related to C# reference parameters. If I understand correctly, variables defined in a method are stored on the stack and are not affected by garbage collection. So, in this example: public class Test { public Test() { } public int DoIt() { int t = 7; Increment(ref t); return t; } private int Increment(ref int p) { p++; } } the return value of DoIt() will be 8. Since the location of t is on the stack, then that memory cannot be garbage collected or compacted and the reference variable in Increment() will always point to the proper contents of t. However, suppose we have: public class Test { private int t = 7; public Test() { } public int DoIt() { Increment(ref t); return t; } private int Increment(ref int p) { p++; } } Now, t is stored on the heap as it is a value of a specific instance of my class. Isn't this possibly a problem if I pass this value as a reference parameter? If I pass t as a reference parameter, p will point to the current location of t. However, if the garbage collector moves this object during a compact, won't that mess up the reference to t in Increment()? Or does the garbage collector update even references created by passing reference parameters? Do I have to worry about this at all? The only mention of worrying about memory being compacted on MSDN (that I can find) is in relation to passing managed references to unmanaged code. Hopefully that's because I don't have to worry about any managed references in managed code. :)

• ExternalInterface issue on loadup with FireFox

  Hello, I have an issue with my ExternalInterface. The way it is currently set up is, on the page load up, a boolean is set to true in JavaScript and then checked by ActionScript constructors (using a timer) until it is true. This marks that JavaScript is ready to get calls from AS3. At this point, AS3 will add the callback and do some internal stuff, and at the end of the constructor I call JavaScript. So far so good. JavaScript will at this point call a function in AS3 (that was defined in the callback described above), and this is where it all messes up. On IE this works perfectly fine. On FireFox though, it does not. When I debug it, I see that the javascript function is called but when it tries to call AS3, nothing happens. I also tried to add a timer, but for some reason the function STILL executes straight away (in IE). What is very weird is that a second or two later, that function will work, so it seems that the Flash is not completely loaded in FireFox? But it runs to the last line of my constructor, so I would believe it's loaded. Any idea please, I am really stuck. Thanks a lot, Rudy

• drawing to a JPanel without inheritance

  Right now I'm working on a program that throws up a bunch of separate (generated at runtime) images, each in their own window. • Database nesting layout confusion

  I'm no expert in databases and a beginner in Rails, so here goes something which kinda confuses me... Assuming I have three classes as a sample (note that no effort has been made to address any possible Rails reserved words issue in the sample). class File < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :records, :dependent => :destroy accepts_nested_attributes_for :records, :allow_destroy => true end class Record < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :file has_many :users, :dependent => :destroy accepts_nested_attributes_for :users, :allow_destroy => true end class User < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :record end Upon entering records, the database contents will appear as such. My issue is that if there are a lot of Files for the same Record, there will be duplicate record names. This will also be true if there will be multiple Records for the same user in the the Users table. I was wondering if there is a better way than this so as to have one or more files point to a single Record entry and one or more Records will point to a single User. BTW, the File names are unique. Files table: id name 1 name1 2 name2 3 name3 4 name4 Records table: id file_id record_name record_type 1 1 ForDaisy1 ... 2 2 ForDonald1 ... 3 3 ForDonald2 ... 4 4 ForDaisy1 ... Users table: id record_id username 1 1 Daisy 2 2 Donald 3 3 Donald 4 4 Daisy Is there any way to optimize the database to prevent duplication of entries, or this should really the correct and proper behavior. I spread out the database into different tables to be able to easily add new columns in the future.

But if i save myobject to any variable for future use. It will loose its binding. Anybody ever try to do this ? Is there any work around ? or It is definitely a bad idea ? .And thanks for answering my question.

• ExecutorService memory leak on exception

  I am having a hard time tracking this down since the profiler keeps crashing (hotspot error). Before I go too deep into figuring it out I'd like to know if I really have a problem or not :-) I have a few thread pools created via: Executors.newFixedThreadPool(10); The threads connect to different web sites and, on occasion, I get connection refused and wind up throwing an exception. When I later on call Future.get() to get the result it will then catch the ExecutionException that wraps the exception that was thrown when the connection could not be made. The program uses a fairly constant amount of memory up until the point in time that the exceptions get thrown (they tend to happen in batches when a particular site is overloaded). After that point the memory again remains constant but at a higher level. So my question is along the lines of is the memory behaviour (reported by "top" on Unix) expected because the exceptions just triggered something or do I probably have an actual leak that I'll need to track down? Additionally when Future.get() throws an exception is there anything else I need to do besides catch the exception (such as call Future.cancel() on it)?

• How to Use XSLT to Replace Coordinate Separator With List of Tuples?

  I have a space-separated list of coordinate tuples. Each tuple consists of a space-separated list of 2-dimensional coordinates. E.g. "1.1 2.8 1.2 2.9" represents a line from POINT(1.1 2.8) to POINT(1.2 2.9). I need this to instead be "1.1,2.8 1.2,2.9". How would I use XSLT to perform the replacement of space-to-comma between pairs of numbers? I have the "string(gml:LinearRing/gml:posList)". This is being used on a Java Web Service that spits out GML 3.1.1 features with geometries. The service supports optional KML output, by using XSLT to transform the GML document into a KML document (at least, the chunks deemed "important"). I am locked into XSLT 1.0, so regex from XSLT 2.0 is not an option. I am aware that GML uses lat/lon while KML uses lon/lat. That's being handled before XSLT, though it would be nice to have that also done with XSLT.

The second 2d array represents the position on the ground. This 2d array has everyone of its indexes as null apart from one which is comprised of a Person class. Problem I am unsure of how I can draw the position on the grid. I was thinking of a similar loop, so it draws over the previous 2d array another set of 64 tiles. Only this time they are all transparent but the one tile which isn't null. In other words, the tile where Person is located. I wanted to use a search throughout the loop using a comparative if statement along the lines of if(!(world[] == null)){ map.add(new RectangleObject(p,35,35,Colour.red));} However my knowledge is limited and I am confused on how to implement it.

• image appears larger than bounding rectangle?

  Hello I'm implementing a custom print preview control. One of the objects it needs to display is an image which can be several pages high and wide. I've successfully divided the image into pages and displayed them in the correct order. Each "page" is drawn within the marginbounds. (That is, each page is sized to be the same as the marginBounds.) The problem I have is that the image the page represents exceeds the bottom margin. However if I draw a rectangle with the same dimensions as the image, at the same position as the image, the rectangle matches the marginbounds. Thus when drawn to the page (in print preview and printed page) the image is larger than a rectangle drawn based on the image dimensions. I.e. The image is drawn at the same size as e.MarignBounds and is drawn at e.MarginBounds.Location yet exceeds the bottom margin. How is this? • jQuery Cycle - #next #prev, goto nextGallery after final slide of currentGallery

  I am using jQuery cycle in several galleries with #next #prev navigation and a image counter output. Now I am trying to connect all these galleries together. If the user reaches the final slide of gallery A (galleryA.html), the #next anchor should point to gallery B (galleryB.html) / the #prev anchor should point to gallery C (galleryC.html). • InvalidOperationException when executing SqlCommand with transaction

  I have this code, running parallel in two separate threads. It works fine for a few times, but at some random point it throws InvalidOperationException: The transaction is either not associated with the current connection or has been completed. At the point of exception, I am looking inside the transaction with visual studio and verify its connection is set normally. Also command.Transaction._internalTransaction. _transactionState is set to Active and IsZombied property is set to false. This is a test application and I am using Thread.Sleep for creating longer transactions and causing overlaps. Why may the exception being thrown and what can I do about it? • Thread-safe data structure design

  Hello, I have to design a data structure that is to be used in a multi-threaded environment. The basic API is simple: insert element, remove element, retrieve element, check that element exists. The structure's implementation uses implicit locking to guarantee the atomicity of a single API call. After i implemented this it became apparent, that what i really need is atomicity across several API calls. For example if a caller needs to check the existence of an element before trying to insert it he can't do that atomically even if each single API call is atomic: if(!data_structure.exists(element)) { data_structure.insert(element); } The example is somewhat awkward, but the basic point is that we can't trust the result of "exists" call anymore after we return from atomic context (the generated assembly clearly shows a minor chance of context switch between the two calls). What i currently have in mind to solve this is exposing the lock through the data structure's public API. This way clients will have to explicitly lock things, but at least they won't have to create their own locks. Is there a better commonly-known solution to these kinds of problems? And as long as we're at it, can you advise some good literature on thread-safe design? EDIT: I have a better example. Suppose that element retrieval returns either a reference or a pointer to the stored element and not it's copy. How can a caller be protected to safely use this pointer\reference after the call returns? If you think that not returning copies is a problem, then think about deep copies, i.e. objects that should also copy another objects they point to internally. Thank you.
