  • Input string was not in the correct format using int.Parse

    - by JDWebs
    I have recently been making a login 'representation' which is not secure. So before answering, please note I am aware of security risks etc., and this will not be on a live site. Also note I am a beginner :P. For my login representation, I am using LINQ to compare values of a DDL to select a username and a Textbox to enter a password, when a login button is clicked. However, an error is thrown 'Input string was not in the correct format', when using int.Parse. Front End: <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Login_Test.aspx.cs" Inherits="Login_Login_Test" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head runat="server"> <title>Login Test</title> </head> <body> <form id="LoginTest" runat="server"> <div> <asp:DropDownList ID="DDL_Username" runat="server" Height="20px" DataTextField="txt"> </asp:DropDownList> <br /> <asp:TextBox ID="TB_Password" runat="server" TextMode="Password"></asp:TextBox> <br /> <asp:Button ID="B_Login" runat="server" onclick="B_Login_Click" Text="Login" /> <br /> <asp:Literal ID="LI_Result" runat="server"></asp:Literal> </div> </form> </body> </html> Back End: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; public partial class Login_Login_Test : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!Page.IsPostBack) { Binder(); } } private void Binder() { using (DataClassesDataContext db = new DataClassesDataContext()) { DDL_Username.DataSource = from x in db.DT_Honeys select new { id = x.UsernameID, txt = x.Username }; DDL_Username.DataValueField = "id"; DDL_Username.DataTextField = "txt"; DDL_Username.DataBind(); } } protected void B_Login_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (TB_Password.Text != "") { using (DataClassesDataContext db = new DataClassesDataContext()) { DT_Honey blah = new DT_Honey(); blah = db.DT_Honeys.SingleOrDefault(x => x.UsernameID == int.Parse(DDL_Username.SelectedValue.ToString())); if (blah == null) { LI_Result.Text = "Something went wrong :/"; } if (blah.Password == TB_Password.Text) { LI_Result.Text = "Credentials recognised :-)"; } else { LI_Result.Text = "Error with credentials :-("; } } } } } I am aware this problem is very common, but none of the help I have found online is useful/relevant. Any help/suggestions appreciated; thank you for your time :-).

  • simplejson double escapes data causing invalid JSON string

    - by mike_hornbeck
    I have a simple form for managing manufacturers in my shop. After posting form, ajax call returns json with updated data to the form. Problem is, that the returned string is invalid. It looks like it was double-escaped. Strangely similar approach across the whole shop works without any problems. I'm also using jquery 1.6 as javascript framework. Model contains of 3 fields : char for name, text for description and image field for manufacturer logo. The function : def update_data(request, manufacturer_id): """Updates data of manufacturer with given manufacturer id. """ manufacturer = Manufacturer.objects.get(pk=manufacturer_id) form = ManufacturerDataForm(request.FILES, request.POST, instance=manufacturer) if form.is_valid(): form.save() msg = _(u"Manufacturer data has been saved.") html = [ ["#data", manufacturer_data_inline(request, manufacturer_id, form)], ["#selectable-factories-inline", selectable_manufacturers_inline(request, manufacturer_id)], ] result = simplejson.dumps({ "html": html }, cls=LazyEncoder) return HttpResponse(result) The error in console : error with invalid JSON : uncaught exception: Invalid JSON: {"html": [["#data", "\n<h2>Dane</h2>\n<div class="\&quot;manufacturer-image\&quot;">\n \n</div>\n<form action="\&quot;/manage/update-manufacturer-data/1\&quot;" method="\&quot;post\&quot;">\n \n <div class="\&quot;field\&quot;">\n <div class="\&quot;label\&quot;">\n <label for="\&quot;id_name\&quot;">Nazwa</label>:\n </div>\n \n \n <div class="\&quot;error\&quot;">\n <input id="\&quot;id_name\&quot;" name="\&quot;name\&quot;" maxlength="\&quot;50\&quot;" type="\&quot;text\&quot;">\n <ul class="\&quot;errorlist\&quot;"><li>Pole wymagane</li></ul>\n </div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class="\&quot;field\&quot;">\n <div class="\&quot;label\&quot;">\n <label for="\&quot;id_image\&quot;">Zdjecie</label>:\n </div>\n \n \n <div>\n <input name="\&quot;image\&quot;" id="\&quot;id_image\&quot;" type="\&quot;file\&quot;">\n </div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class="\&quot;field\&quot;">\n <div class="\&quot;label\&quot;">\n <label for="\&quot;id_description\&quot;">Opis</label>:\n </div>\n \n \n <div>\n <textarea id="\&quot;id_description\&quot;" rows="\&quot;10\&quot;" cols="\&quot;40\&quot;" name="\&quot;description\&quot;"></textarea>\n </div>\n \n </div>\n \n <div class="\&quot;buttons\&quot;">\n <input class="\&quot;ajax-save-button" button\"="" type="\&quot;submit\&quot;">\n </div>\n</form>"], ["#selectable-factories-inline", "\n <div>\n <a class="\&quot;selectable" selected\"\n="" href="%5C%22/manage/manufacturer/1%5C%22">\n L1\n </a>\n </div>\n\n <div>\n <a class="\&quot;selectable" \"\n="" href="%5C%22/manage/manufacturer/4%5C%22">\n KR3W\n </a>\n </div>\n\n <div>\n <a class="\&quot;selectable" \"\n="" href="%5C%22/manage/manufacturer/3%5C%22">\n L1TA\n </a>\n </div>\n\n"]]} Any ideas ?

  • [C++] Adding a string or char array to a byte vector

    - by xeross
    I'm currently working on a class to create and read out packets send through the network, so far I have it working with 16bit and 8bit integers (Well unsigned but still). Now the problem is I've tried numerous ways of copying it over but somehow the _buffer got mangled, it segfaulted, or the result was wrong. I'd appreciate if someone could show me a working example. My current code can be seen below. Thanks, Xeross Main #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include "Packet.h" using namespace std; int main(int argc, char** argv) { cout << "#################################" << endl; cout << "# Internal Use Only #" << endl; cout << "# Codename PACKETSTORM #" << endl; cout << "#################################" << endl; cout << endl; Packet packet = Packet(); packet.SetOpcode(0x1f4d); cout << "Current opcode is: " << packet.GetOpcode() << endl << endl; packet.add(uint8_t(5)) .add(uint16_t(4000)) .add(uint8_t(5)); for(uint8_t i=0; i<10;i++) printf("Byte %u = %x\n", i, packet._buffer[i]); printf("\nReading them out: \n1 = %u\n2 = %u\n3 = %u\n4 = %s", packet.readUint8(), packet.readUint16(), packet.readUint8()); return 0; } Packet.h #ifndef _PACKET_H_ #define _PACKET_H_ #include <iostream> #include <vector> #include <stdio.h> #include <stdint.h> #include <string.h> using namespace std; class Packet { public: Packet() : m_opcode(0), _buffer(0), _wpos(0), _rpos(0) {} Packet(uint16_t opcode) : m_opcode(opcode), _buffer(0), _wpos(0), _rpos(0) {} uint16_t GetOpcode() { return m_opcode; } void SetOpcode(uint16_t opcode) { m_opcode = opcode; } Packet& add(uint8_t value) { if(_buffer.size() < _wpos + 1) _buffer.resize(_wpos + 1); memcpy(&_buffer[_wpos], &value, 1); _wpos += 1; return *this; } Packet& add(uint16_t value) { if(_buffer.size() < _wpos + 2) _buffer.resize(_wpos + 2); memcpy(&_buffer[_wpos], &value, 2); _wpos += 2; return *this; } uint8_t readUint8() { uint8_t result = _buffer[_rpos]; _rpos += sizeof(uint8_t); return result; } uint16_t readUint16() { uint16_t result; memcpy(&result, &_buffer[_rpos], sizeof(uint16_t)); _rpos += sizeof(uint16_t); return result; } uint16_t m_opcode; std::vector<uint8_t> _buffer; protected: size_t _wpos; // Write position size_t _rpos; // Read position }; #endif // _PACKET_H_

  • Refactoring FizzBuzz

    - by MarkPearl
    A few years ago I blogger about FizzBuzz, at the time the post was prompted by Scott Hanselman who had podcasted about how surprized he was that some programmers could not even solve the FizzBuzz problem within a reasonable period of time during a job interview. At the time I thought I would give the problem a go in F# and sure enough the solution was fairly simple – I then also did a basic solution in C# but never posted it. Since then I have learned that being able to solve a problem and how you solve the problem are two totally different things. Today I decided to give the problem a retry and see if I had learnt anything new in the last year or so. Here is how my solution looked after refactoring… Solution 1 – Cheap and Nasty public class FizzBuzzCalculator { public string NumberFormat(int number) { var numDivisibleBy3 = (number % 3) == 0; var numDivisibleBy5 = (number % 5) == 0; if (numDivisibleBy3 && numDivisibleBy5) return String.Format("{0} FizzBuz", number); else if (numDivisibleBy3) return String.Format("{0} Fizz", number); else if (numDivisibleBy5) return String.Format("{0} Buz", number); return number.ToString(); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } } } My first attempt I just looked at solving the problem – it works, and could be an acceptable solution but tonight I thought I would see how far  I could refactor it… The section I decided to focus on was the mass of if..else code in the NumberFormat method. Solution 2 – Replacing If…Else with a Dictionary public class FizzBuzzCalculator { private readonly Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> _mappings; public FizzBuzzCalculator(Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> mappings) { _mappings = mappings; } public string NumberFormat(int number) { var numDivisibleBy3 = (number % 3) == 0; var numDivisibleBy5 = (number % 5) == 0; var mappedKey = new Tuple<bool, bool>(numDivisibleBy3, numDivisibleBy5); return String.Format("{0} {1}", number, _mappings[mappedKey]); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var mappings = new Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> { { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, true), "- FizzBuzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, false), "- Fizz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, true), "- Buzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, false), ""} }; var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(mappings); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); } } In my second attempt I looked at removing the if else in the NumberFormat method. A dictionary proved to be useful for this – I added a constructor to the class and injected the dictionary mapping. One could argue that this is totally overkill, but if I was going to use this code in a large system an approach like this makes it easy to put this data in a configuration file, which would up its OC (Open for extensibility, closed for modification principle). I could of course take the OC principle even further – the check for divisibility by 3 and 5 is tightly coupled to this class. If I wanted to make it 4 instead of 3, I would need to adjust this class. This introduces my third refactoring. Solution 3 – Introducing Delegates and Injecting them into the class public delegate bool FizzBuzzComparison(int number); public class FizzBuzzCalculator { private readonly Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> _mappings; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison1; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison2; public FizzBuzzCalculator(Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> mappings, FizzBuzzComparison comparison1, FizzBuzzComparison comparison2) { _mappings = mappings; _comparison1 = comparison1; _comparison2 = comparison2; } public string NumberFormat(int number) { var mappedKey = new Tuple<bool, bool>(_comparison1(number), _comparison2(number)); return String.Format("{0} {1}", number, _mappings[mappedKey]); } } class Program { private static bool DivisibleByNum(int number, int divisor) { return number % divisor == 0; } public static bool Divisibleby3(int number) { return number % 3 == 0; } public static bool Divisibleby5(int number) { return number % 5 == 0; } static void Main(string[] args) { var mappings = new Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> { { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, true), "- FizzBuzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, false), "- Fizz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, true), "- Buzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, false), ""} }; var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(mappings, Divisibleby3, Divisibleby5); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); } } I have taken this one step further and introduced delegates that are injected into the FizzBuzz Calculator class, from an OC principle perspective it has probably made it more compliant than the previous Solution 2, but there seems to be a lot of noise. Anonymous Delegates increase the readability level, which is what I have done in Solution 4. Solution 4 – Anon Delegates public delegate bool FizzBuzzComparison(int number); public class FizzBuzzCalculator { private readonly Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> _mappings; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison1; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison2; public FizzBuzzCalculator(Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> mappings, FizzBuzzComparison comparison1, FizzBuzzComparison comparison2) { _mappings = mappings; _comparison1 = comparison1; _comparison2 = comparison2; } public string NumberFormat(int number) { var mappedKey = new Tuple<bool, bool>(_comparison1(number), _comparison2(number)); return String.Format("{0} {1}", number, _mappings[mappedKey]); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var mappings = new Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> { { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, true), "- FizzBuzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, false), "- Fizz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, true), "- Buzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, false), ""} }; var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(mappings, (n) => n % 3 == 0, (n) => n % 5 == 0); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); } }   Using the anonymous delegates I think the noise level has now been reduced. This is where I am going to end this post, I have gone through 4 iterations of the code from the initial solution using If..Else to delegates and dictionaries. I think each approach would have it’s pro’s and con’s and depending on the intention of where the code would be used would be a large determining factor. If you can think of an alternative way to do FizzBuzz, add a comment!

  • Sorting a file with 55K rows and varying Columns

    - by Prasad
    Hi I want to find a programmatic solution using C++. I have a 900 files each of 27MB size. (just to inform about the enormity ). Each file has 55K rows and Varying columns. But the header indicates the columns I want to sort the rows in an order w.r.t to a Column Value. I wrote the sorting algorithm for this (definitely my newbie attempts, you may say). This algorithm is working for few numbers, but fails for larger numbers. Here is the code for the same: basic functions I defined to use inside the main code: int getNumberOfColumns(const string& aline) { int ncols=0; istringstream ss(aline); string s1; while(ss>>s1) ncols++; return ncols; } vector<string> getWordsFromSentence(const string& aline) { vector<string>words; istringstream ss(aline); string tstr; while(ss>>tstr) words.push_back(tstr); return words; } bool findColumnName(vector<string> vs, const string& colName) { vector<string>::iterator it = find(vs.begin(), vs.end(), colName); if ( it != vs.end()) return true; else return false; } int getIndexForColumnName(vector<string> vs, const string& colName) { if ( !findColumnName(vs,colName) ) return -1; else { vector<string>::iterator it = find(vs.begin(), vs.end(), colName); return it - vs.begin(); } } ////////// I like the Recurssive functions - I tried to create a recursive function ///here. This worked for small values , say 20 rows. But for 55K - core dumps void sort2D(vector<string>vn, vector<string> &srt, int columnIndex) { vector<double> pVals; for ( int i = 0; i < vn.size(); i++) { vector<string>meancols = getWordsFromSentence(vn[i]); pVals.push_back(stringToDouble(meancols[columnIndex])); } srt.push_back(vn[max_element(pVals.begin(), pVals.end())-pVals.begin()]); if (vn.size() > 1 ) { vn.erase(vn.begin()+(max_element(pVals.begin(), pVals.end())-pVals.begin()) ); vector<string> vn2 = vn; //cout<<srt[srt.size() -1 ]<<endl; sort2D(vn2 , srt, columnIndex); } } Now the main code: for ( int i = 0; i < TissueNames.size() -1; i++) { for ( int j = i+1; j < TissueNames.size(); j++) { //string fname = path+"/gse7307_Female_rma"+TissueNames[i]+"_"+TissueNames[j]+".txt"; //string fname2 = sortpath2+"/gse7307_Female_rma"+TissueNames[i]+"_"+TissueNames[j]+"Sorted.txt"; string fname = path+"/gse7307_Male_rma"+TissueNames[i]+"_"+TissueNames[j]+".txt"; string fname2 = sortpath2+"/gse7307_Male_rma"+TissueNames[i]+"_"+TissueNames[j]+"4Columns.txt"; //vector<string>AllLinesInFile; BioInputStream fin(fname); string aline; getline(fin,aline); replace (aline.begin(), aline.end(), '"',' '); string headerline = aline; vector<string> header = getWordsFromSentence(aline); int pindex = getIndexForColumnName(header,"p-raw"); int xcindex = getIndexForColumnName(header,"xC"); int xeindex = getIndexForColumnName(header,"xE"); int prbindex = getIndexForColumnName(header,"X"); string newheaderline = "X\txC\txE\tp-raw"; BioOutputStream fsrt(fname2); fsrt<<newheaderline<<endl; int newpindex=3; while ( getline(fin, aline) ){ replace (aline.begin(), aline.end(), '"',' '); istringstream ss2(aline); string tstr; ss2>>tstr; tstr = ss2.str().substr(tstr.length()+1); vector<string> words = getWordsFromSentence(tstr); string values = words[prbindex]+"\t"+words[xcindex]+"\t"+words[xeindex]+"\t"+words[pindex]; AllLinesInFile.push_back(values); } vector<string>SortedLines; sort2D(AllLinesInFile, SortedLines,newpindex); for ( int si = 0; si < SortedLines.size(); si++) fsrt<<SortedLines[si]<<endl; cout<<"["<<i<<","<<j<<"] = "<<SortedLines.size()<<endl; } } can some one suggest me a better way of doing this? why it is failing for larger values. ? The primary function of interest for this query is Sort2D function. thanks for the time and patience. prasad.

  • Capturing and Transforming ASP.NET Output with Response.Filter

    - by Rick Strahl
    During one of my Handlers and Modules session at DevConnections this week one of the attendees asked a question that I didn’t have an immediate answer for. Basically he wanted to capture response output completely and then apply some filtering to the output – effectively injecting some additional content into the page AFTER the page had completely rendered. Specifically the output should be captured from anywhere – not just a page and have this code injected into the page. Some time ago I posted some code that allows you to capture ASP.NET Page output by overriding the Render() method, capturing the HtmlTextWriter() and reading its content, modifying the rendered data as text then writing it back out. I’ve actually used this approach on a few occasions and it works fine for ASP.NET pages. But this obviously won’t work outside of the Page class environment and it’s not really generic – you have to create a custom page class in order to handle the output capture. [updated 11/16/2009 – updated ResponseFilterStream implementation and a few additional notes based on comments] Enter Response.Filter However, ASP.NET includes a Response.Filter which can be used – well to filter output. Basically Response.Filter is a stream through which the OutputStream is piped back to the Web Server (indirectly). As content is written into the Response object, the filter stream receives the appropriate Stream commands like Write, Flush and Close as well as read operations although for a Response.Filter that’s uncommon to be hit. The Response.Filter can be programmatically replaced at runtime which allows you to effectively intercept all output generation that runs through ASP.NET. A common Example: Dynamic GZip Encoding A rather common use of Response.Filter hooking up code based, dynamic  GZip compression for requests which is dead simple by applying a GZipStream (or DeflateStream) to Response.Filter. The following generic routines can be used very easily to detect GZip capability of the client and compress response output with a single line of code and a couple of library helper routines: WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); which is handled with a few lines of reusable code and a couple of static helper methods: /// <summary> ///Sets up the current page or handler to use GZip through a Response.Filter ///IMPORTANT:  ///You have to call this method before any output is generated! /// </summary> public static void GZipEncodePage() {     HttpResponse Response = HttpContext.Current.Response;     if(IsGZipSupported())     {         stringAcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"];         if(AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))         {             Response.Filter = newSystem.IO.Compression.DeflateStream(Response.Filter,                                        System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress);             Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "deflate");         }         else        {             Response.Filter = newSystem.IO.Compression.GZipStream(Response.Filter,                                       System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress);             Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "gzip");                            }     }     // Allow proxy servers to cache encoded and unencoded versions separately    Response.AppendHeader("Vary", "Content-Encoding"); } /// <summary> /// Determines if GZip is supported /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static bool IsGZipSupported() { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(AcceptEncoding) && (AcceptEncoding.Contains("gzip") || AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))) return true; return false; } GZipStream and DeflateStream are streams that are assigned to Response.Filter and by doing so apply the appropriate compression on the active Response. Response.Filter content is chunked So to implement a Response.Filter effectively requires only that you implement a custom stream and handle the Write() method to capture Response output as it’s written. At first blush this seems very simple – you capture the output in Write, transform it and write out the transformed content in one pass. And that indeed works for small amounts of content. But you see, the problem is that output is written in small buffer chunks (a little less than 16k it appears) rather than just a single Write() statement into the stream, which makes perfect sense for ASP.NET to stream data back to IIS in smaller chunks to minimize memory usage en route. Unfortunately this also makes it a more difficult to implement any filtering routines since you don’t directly get access to all of the response content which is problematic especially if those filtering routines require you to look at the ENTIRE response in order to transform or capture the output as is needed for the solution the gentleman in my session asked for. So in order to address this a slightly different approach is required that basically captures all the Write() buffers passed into a cached stream and then making the stream available only when it’s complete and ready to be flushed. As I was thinking about the implementation I also started thinking about the few instances when I’ve used Response.Filter implementations. Each time I had to create a new Stream subclass and create my custom functionality but in the end each implementation did the same thing – capturing output and transforming it. I thought there should be an easier way to do this by creating a re-usable Stream class that can handle stream transformations that are common to Response.Filter implementations. Creating a semi-generic Response Filter Stream Class What I ended up with is a ResponseFilterStream class that provides a handful of Events that allow you to capture and/or transform Response content. The class implements a subclass of Stream and then overrides Write() and Flush() to handle capturing and transformation operations. By exposing events it’s easy to hook up capture or transformation operations via single focused methods. ResponseFilterStream exposes the following events: CaptureStream, CaptureString Captures the output only and provides either a MemoryStream or String with the final page output. Capture is hooked to the Flush() operation of the stream. TransformStream, TransformString Allows you to transform the complete response output with events that receive a MemoryStream or String respectively and can you modify the output then return it back as a return value. The transformed output is then written back out in a single chunk to the response output stream. These events capture all output internally first then write the entire buffer into the response. TransformWrite, TransformWriteString Allows you to transform the Response data as it is written in its original chunk size in the Stream’s Write() method. Unlike TransformStream/TransformString which operate on the complete output, these events only see the current chunk of data written. This is more efficient as there’s no caching involved, but can cause problems due to searched content splitting over multiple chunks. Using this implementation, creating a custom Response.Filter transformation becomes as simple as the following code. To hook up the Response.Filter using the MemoryStream version event: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformStream += filter_TransformStream; Response.Filter = filter; and the event handler to do the transformation: MemoryStream filter_TransformStream(MemoryStream ms) { Encoding encoding = HttpContext.Current.Response.ContentEncoding; string output = encoding.GetString(ms.ToArray()); output = FixPaths(output); ms = new MemoryStream(output.Length); byte[] buffer = encoding.GetBytes(output); ms.Write(buffer,0,buffer.Length); return ms; } private string FixPaths(string output) { string path = HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath; // override root path wonkiness if (path == "/") path = ""; output = output.Replace("\"~/", "\"" + path + "/").Replace("'~/", "'" + path + "/"); return output; } The idea of the event handler is that you can do whatever you want to the stream and return back a stream – either the same one that’s been modified or a brand new one – which is then sent back to as the final response. The above code can be simplified even more by using the string version events which handle the stream to string conversions for you: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; and the event handler to do the transformation calling the same FixPaths method shown above: string filter_TransformString(string output) { return FixPaths(output); } The events for capturing output and capturing and transforming chunks work in a very similar way. By using events to handle the transformations ResponseFilterStream becomes a reusable component and we don’t have to create a new stream class or subclass an existing Stream based classed. By the way, the example used here is kind of a cool trick which transforms “~/” expressions inside of the final generated HTML output – even in plain HTML controls not HTML controls – and transforms them into the appropriate application relative path in the same way that ResolveUrl would do. So you can write plain old HTML like this: <a href=”~/default.aspx”>Home</a>  and have it turned into: <a href=”/myVirtual/default.aspx”>Home</a>  without having to use an ASP.NET control like Hyperlink or Image or having to constantly use: <img src=”<%= ResolveUrl(“~/images/home.gif”) %>” /> in MVC applications (which frankly is one of the most annoying things about MVC especially given the path hell that extension-less and endpoint-less URLs impose). I can’t take credit for this idea. While discussing the Response.Filter issues on Twitter a hint from Dylan Beattie who pointed me at one of his examples which does something similar. I thought the idea was cool enough to use an example for future demos of Response.Filter functionality in ASP.NET next I time I do the Modules and Handlers talk (which was great fun BTW). How practical this is is debatable however since there’s definitely some overhead to using a Response.Filter in general and especially on one that caches the output and the re-writes it later. Make sure to test for performance anytime you use Response.Filter hookup and make sure it' doesn’t end up killing perf on you. You’ve been warned :-}. How does ResponseFilterStream work? The big win of this implementation IMHO is that it’s a reusable  component – so for implementation there’s no new class, no subclassing – you simply attach to an event to implement an event handler method with a straight forward signature to retrieve the stream or string you’re interested in. The implementation is based on a subclass of Stream as is required in order to handle the Response.Filter requirements. What’s different than other implementations I’ve seen in various places is that it supports capturing output as a whole to allow retrieving the full response output for capture or modification. The exception are the TransformWrite and TransformWrite events which operate only active chunk of data written by the Response. For captured output, the Write() method captures output into an internal MemoryStream that is cached until writing is complete. So Write() is called when ASP.NET writes to the Response stream, but the filter doesn’t pass on the Write immediately to the filter’s internal stream. The data is cached and only when the Flush() method is called to finalize the Stream’s output do we actually send the cached stream off for transformation (if the events are hooked up) and THEN finally write out the returned content in one big chunk. Here’s the implementation of ResponseFilterStream: /// <summary> /// A semi-generic Stream implementation for Response.Filter with /// an event interface for handling Content transformations via /// Stream or String. /// <remarks> /// Use with care for large output as this implementation copies /// the output into a memory stream and so increases memory usage. /// </remarks> /// </summary> public class ResponseFilterStream : Stream { /// <summary> /// The original stream /// </summary> Stream _stream; /// <summary> /// Current position in the original stream /// </summary> long _position; /// <summary> /// Stream that original content is read into /// and then passed to TransformStream function /// </summary> MemoryStream _cacheStream = new MemoryStream(5000); /// <summary> /// Internal pointer that that keeps track of the size /// of the cacheStream /// </summary> int _cachePointer = 0; /// <summary> /// /// </summary> /// <param name="responseStream"></param> public ResponseFilterStream(Stream responseStream) { _stream = responseStream; } /// <summary> /// Determines whether the stream is captured /// </summary> private bool IsCaptured { get { if (CaptureStream != null || CaptureString != null || TransformStream != null || TransformString != null) return true; return false; } } /// <summary> /// Determines whether the Write method is outputting data immediately /// or delaying output until Flush() is fired. /// </summary> private bool IsOutputDelayed { get { if (TransformStream != null || TransformString != null) return true; return false; } } /// <summary> /// Event that captures Response output and makes it available /// as a MemoryStream instance. if (!IsOutputDelayed) _stream.Write(buffer, offset, buffer.Length); } } The key features are the events and corresponding OnXXX methods that handle the event hookups, and the Write() and Flush() methods of the stream implementation. All the rest of the members tend to be plain jane passthrough stream implementation code without much consequence. I do love the way Action<t> and Func<T> make it so easy to create the event signatures for the various events – sweet. A few Things to consider Performance Response.Filter is not great for performance in general as it adds another layer of indirection to the ASP.NET output pipeline, and this implementation in particular adds a memory hit as it basically duplicates the response output into the cached memory stream which is necessary since you may have to look at the entire response. If you have large pages in particular this can cause potentially serious memory pressure in your server application. So be careful of wholesale adoption of this (or other) Response.Filters. Make sure to do some performance testing to ensure it’s not killing your app’s performance. Response.Filter works everywhere A few questions came up in comments and discussion as to capturing ALL output hitting the site and – yes you can definitely do that by assigning a Response.Filter inside of a module. If you do this however you’ll want to be very careful and decide which content you actually want to capture especially in IIS 7 which passes ALL content – including static images/CSS etc. through the ASP.NET pipeline. So it is important to filter only on what you’re looking for – like the page extension or maybe more effectively the Response.ContentType. Response.Filter Chaining Originally I thought that filter chaining doesn’t work at all due to a bug in the stream implementation code. But it’s quite possible to assign multiple filters to the Response.Filter property. So the following actually works to both compress the output and apply the transformed content: WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; However the following does not work resulting in invalid content encoding errors: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); In other words multiple Response filters can work together but it depends entirely on the implementation whether they can be chained or in which order they can be chained. In this case running the GZip/Deflate stream filters apparently relies on the original content length of the output and chokes when the content is modified. But if attaching the compression first it works fine as unintuitive as that may seem. • Environment variable in xcconfig won't expand in Settings.bundle/Root.plist

    - by AO
    I have defined my own environment variable in a .xcconfig file and based my configurations on that as described at http://www.silverchairsolutions.com/blog/2008/03/automating-cocoa-deployments-with-sparkle-and-xcode. My environment variable is indeed expanded in Info.plist but not in my Settings.bundle/Root.plist. Why won't it expand there? Root.plist looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Title</key> <string>${PRODUCT_NAME}</string> <key>PreferenceSpecifiers</key> <array> <dict> <key>DefaultValue</key> <string>${PRODUCT_NAME}</string> <key>Key</key> <string>version</string> <key>Title</key> <string>Version</string> <key>Type</key> <string>PSTitleValueSpecifier</string> </dict> <dict> <key>DefaultValue</key> <string></string> <key>Key</key> <string>atc</string> <key>Title</key> <string>ATC</string> <key>Type</key> <string>PSTitleValueSpecifier</string> </dict> </array>

  • Memcache key generation strategy

    - by Maxim Veksler
    Given function f1 which receives n String arguments, would be considered better random key generation strategy for memcache for the scenario described below ? Our Memcache client does internal md5sum hashing on the keys it gets public class MemcacheClient { public Object get(String key) { String md5 = Md5sum.md5(key) // Talk to memcached to get the Serialization... return memcached(md5); } } First option public static String f1(String s1, String s2, String s3, String s4) { String key = s1 + s2 + s3 + s4; return get(key); } Second option /** * Calculate hash from Strings * * @param objects vararg list of String's * * @return calculated md5sum hash */ public static String stringHash(Object... strings) { if(strings == null) throw new NullPointerException("D'oh! Can't calculate hash for null"); MD5 md5sum = new MD5(); // if(prevHash != null) // md5sum.Update(prevHash); for(int i = 0; i < strings.length; i++) { if(strings[i] != null) { md5sum.Update("_" + strings[i] + "_"); // Convert to String... } else { // If object is null, allow minimum entropy by hashing it's position md5sum.Update("_" + i + "_"); } } return md5sum.asHex(); } public static String f1(String s1, String s2, String s3, String s4) { String key = stringHash(s1, s2, s3, s4); return get(key); } Note that the possible problem with the second option is that we are doing second md5sum (in the memcache client) on an already md5sum'ed digest result. Thanks for reading, Maxim.

  • Jquery and PHP function

    - by Sergio
    How can I this PHP function include in jquery .html? PHP function: function trim_text($string, $limit, $break="<", $pad=" ...") { $words = explode(' ', htmlentities(strip_tags($string))); $countr = count($words); if ($countr <= 8) { return $string; }else{ // return with no change if string is shorter than $limit if(strlen($string) <= $limit) return $string; $string = substr($string, 0, $limit); if(false !== ($breakpoint = strpos($string, $break, $limit))) { if($breakpoint < strlen($string) - 1) { $string = substr($string, 0, $breakpoint) . $pad; } } $last_space = strrpos(substr($string, 0, $limit), ' '); $string = substr($string, 0, $last_space); $string = strip_tags($string); return $string.$pad; } } And the Jquery part of code where I want to in ".html" part somehow call this function is: $(" .text").html('<div>'+ message +'</div>'); What I want to do is trim this "message" text using PHP function. Is it possible?

  • Dynamic ExpandableListView

    - by JLB
    Can anyone tell me how I can Dynamically add groups & children to an ExpandableListView. The purpose is to create a type of task list that I can add new items/groups to. I can populate the view with pre-filled arrays but of course can't add to them to populate the list further. The other method i tried was using the SimpleExpandableListAdapter. Using this i am able to add groups from a List but when it comes to adding children i can only add 1 item per group. public List<Map<String, String>> groupData = new ArrayList<Map<String, String>>(); public List<List<Map<String, String>>> childData = new ArrayList<List<Map<String, String>>>(); public void addGroup(String group) { Map curGroupMap = new HashMap(); groupData.add(curGroupMap); curGroupMap.put(NAME, group); //Add an empty child or else the app will crash when group is expanded. List<Map<String, String>> children = new ArrayList<Map<String, String>>(); Map<String, String> curChildMap = new HashMap<String, String>(); children.add(curChildMap); curChildMap.put(NAME, "EMPTY"); childData.add(children); updateAdapter(); } public void addChild(String child) { List children = new ArrayList(); Map curChildMap = new HashMap(); children.add(curChildMap); curChildMap.put(NAME, child); curChildMap.put(IS_EVEN, "This child is even"); childData.add(activeGroup, children); updateAdapter(); }

  • Auto complete from database using CodeIgniter (Active Record)

    - by Ralph David Abernathy
    I have a form on my website in which one is able to submit a cat. The form contains inputs such as "Name" and "Gender", but I am just trying to get the auto completion to work with the "Name" field. Here is what my jquery looks like : $(document).ready(function() { $( "#tags" ).autocomplete({ source: '/Anish/auto_cat' }); }); Here is what my model looks like: public function auto_cat($search_term) { $this->db->like('name', $search_term); $response = $this->db->get('anish_cats')->result_array(); // var_dump($response);die; return $response; } } Here is my controller: public function auto_cat(){ $search_term = $this->input->get('term'); $cats = $this->Anish_m->auto_cat($search_term); } And here is my view: <head> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.3/themes/smoothness/jquery-ui.css" /> <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.9.1.js"></script> <script src="http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.3/jquery-ui.js"></script> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/resources/demos/style.css" /> </head> <h1>Anish's Page</h1> <form action="/Anish/create" method="POST"> <div class="ui-widget"> <label for="tags">Name</label><input id="tags" type="text" name="name"> </div> <div> <label>Age</label><input type="text" name="age"> </div> <div> <label>Gender</label><input type="text" name="gender"> </div> <div> <label>Species</label><input type="text" name="species"> </div> <div> <label>Eye Color</label><input type="text" name="eye_color"> </div> <div> <label>Color</label><input type="text" name="color"> </div> <div> <label>Description</label><input type="text" name="description"> </div> <div> <label>marital status</label><input type="text" name="marital_status"> </div> <br> <button type="submit" class="btn btn-block btn-primary span1">Add cat</button> </form> <br/><br/><br/><br/> <table class="table table-striped table-bordered table-hover"> <thead> <tr> <th>Name</th> <th>Gender</th> <th>Age</th> <th>Species</th> <th>Eye Color</th> <th>Color</th> <th>Description</th> <th>Marital Status</th> <th>Edit</th> <th>Delete</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <?php foreach ($cats as $cat):?> <tr> <td> <?php echo ($cat['name']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['gender']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['age']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['species']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['eye_color']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['color']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['description']);?><br/> </td> <td> <?php echo ($cat['marital_status']);?><br/> </td> <td> <form action="/Anish/edit" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="<?php echo ($cat['id']);?>" name="Anish_id_edit"> <button class="btn btn-block btn-info">Edit</button> </form> </td> <td> <form action="/Anish/delete" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="<?php echo ($cat['id']);?>" name="Anish_id"> <button class="btn btn-block btn-danger">Delete</button> </form> </td> </tr> <?php endforeach;?> </tbody> </table> I am stuck.   • Syntax for documenting JSON structure

    - by Roman A. Taycher
    So I'm trying to document the format of the json returned by an api I am writing against and I'd like to know if there is any popular format for the documentation of json structure. Note I'm not trying to to test or validate anything, I'm just using this for documentation. Also some ways to add comments to non-constants(items always returned w/ the same value) would be nice. This the not totally thought out scheme I'm currently using: Plain names refer to identifiers or types. Some types have type-comment Strings that appear to be constant(always returned for that type of request) strings are "str" Constant Numbers would be just the number Constant null is null Booleans are true/false for constant booleans or Boolean otherwise [a,b,c] are lists with 3 items a,b,c [... ...] is a list of repeating elements of some types/constants/patterns {a:A,b:B,c:c} and {... ...} is the same for a dictionary. example: story := [header,footer] header := {"data":realHeader,"kind":"Listing"} realHeader := {"after": null, "before": null, "children": [{"data": realRealHeader, "kind": "t3"}], "modhash": ""} footer := {"data":AlmostComments,"kind":"Listing"} AlmostComments := {"data": {"after": null, "before": null, "children": comments, "modhash": ""}, "kind": "t1"} comments := [...{"data":comment, "kind":"t1"}...] realRealHeader := {"author": string, "clicked": boolean, "created": int, "created_utc": int, "domain": "code.reddit.com", "downs": int, "hidden": boolean, "id": string-id, "is_self": boolean, "levenshtein": null, "likes": null, "media": null, "media_embed": { }, "name": string-id, "num_comments": int, "over_18": false, "permalink": string-urlLinkToStoryStartingFrom/r, "saved": false, "score": int, "selftext": string, "selftext_html": string-html, "subreddit": string-subredditname, "subreddit_id": string-id, "thumbnail": "", "title": string, "ups": int, "url": "http://code.reddit.com/" } comments := { "author": string, "body": string-body_html-wout-html, "body_html": string-html-formated, "created": int, "created_utc": int, "downs": int, "id": string-id, "levenshtein": null, "likes": null, "link_id": string-id, "name": string-id", "parent_id": string-id, "replies": AlmostComments or null, "subreddit": string-subredditname, "subreddit_id": string-id, "ups": int }

  • What type of encoding can I use to make a string shorter?

    - by Abe Miessler
    I am interested in encoding a string I have and I am curious if there is a type of encoding that can be used that will only include alpha and numeric characters and would preferably shorten the number of characters needed to represent the string. So far I have looked at using Base64 encoding to do this but it appears to make my string longer and sometimes includes == which I would like to avoid. Example: test name|120101 becomes dGVzdCBuYW1lfDEyMDEwMQ== which goes from 16 to 24 characters and includes non-alphanumeric. Does anyone know of a different type of encoding that I could use that will achieve my requirements? Bonus points if it's either built into the .NET framework or there exists a third party library that will do the encoding.

  • Xml Serialization and the [Obsolete] Attribute

    - by PSteele
    I learned something new today: Starting with .NET 3.5, the XmlSerializer no longer serializes properties that are marked with the Obsolete attribute.  I can’t say that I really agree with this.  Marking something Obsolete is supposed to be something for a developer to deal with in source code.  Once an object is serialized to XML, it becomes data.  I think using the Obsolete attribute as both a compiler flag as well as controlling XML serialization is a bad idea. In this post, I’ll show you how I ran into this and how I got around it. The Setup Let’s start with some make-believe code to demonstrate the issue.  We have a simple data class for storing some information.  We use XML serialization to read and write the data: public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); } } Now a few simple lines of code to serialize it to XML: static void Main(string[] args) { var data = new MyData {    FirstName = "Zachary", LastName = "Smith", Age = 50, Hobbies = {"Mischief", "Sabotage"}, }; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof (MyData)); serializer.Serialize(Console.Out, data); Console.ReadKey(); } And this is what we see on the console: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="IBM437"?> <MyData xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>   The Change So we decided to track the hobbies as a list of strings.  As always, things change and we have more information we need to store per-hobby.  We create a custom “Hobby” object, add a List<Hobby> to our MyData class and we obsolete the old “Hobbies” list to let developers know they shouldn’t use it going forward: public class Hobby { public string Name { get; set; } public int Frequency { get; set; } public int TimesCaught { get; set; }   public override string ToString() { return this.Name; } } public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } [Obsolete("Use HobbyData collection instead.")] public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; } public List<Hobby> HobbyData { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); this.HobbyData = new List<Hobby>(); } } Here’s the kicker: This serialization is done in another application.  The consumers of the XML will be older clients (clients that expect only a “Hobbies” collection) as well as newer clients (that support the new “HobbyData” collection).  This really shouldn’t be a problem – the obsolete attribute is metadata for .NET compilers.  Unfortunately, the XmlSerializer also looks at the compiler attribute to determine what items to serialize/deserialize.  Here’s an example of our problem: static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData) serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if( data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } } If you run the code above, you’ll hit the exception.  Even though the XML contains a “<Hobbies>” node, the obsolete attribute prevents the node from being processed.  This will break old clients that use the new library, but don’t yet access the HobbyData collection. The Fix This fix (in this case), isn’t too painful.  The XmlSerializer exposes events for times when it runs into items (Elements, Attributes, Nodes, etc…) it doesn’t know what to do with.  We can hook in to those events and check and see if we’re getting something that we want to support (like our “Hobbies” node). Here’s a way to read in the old XML data with full support of the new data structure (and keeping the Hobbies collection marked as obsolete): static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); serializer.UnknownElement += serializer_UnknownElement; var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData)serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if (data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } }   static void serializer_UnknownElement(object sender, XmlElementEventArgs e) { if( e.Element.Name != "Hobbies") { return; }   var target = (MyData) e.ObjectBeingDeserialized; foreach(XmlElement hobby in e.Element.ChildNodes) { target.Hobbies.Add(hobby.InnerText); target.HobbyData.Add(new Hobby{Name = hobby.InnerText}); } } As you can see, we hook in to the “UnknownElement” event.  Once we determine it’s our “Hobbies” node, we deserialize it ourselves – as well as populating the new HobbyData collection.  In this case, we have a fairly simple solution to a small change in XML layout.  If you make more extensive changes, it would probably be easier to do some custom serialization to support older data. A sample project with all of this code is available from my repository on bitbucket. Technorati Tags: XmlSerializer,Obsolete,.NET

  • Is it evil to model JSON responses to classes when they are mostly smilar?

    - by Aybe
    Here's the problem : While implementing a C# wrapper for an online API (Discogs) I've been faced to a dilemma : quite often the responses returned have mostly similar members and while modeling these responses to classes, some questions surfaces on which way to go would be the best. Example : Querying for a 'release' or a 'master' will return an object that contains an array of 'artist', however these 'artists' do not exactly have the same members. Currently I decided to represent these 'artists' as a single 'Artist' class, against having respective 'ReleaseArtist' and 'MasterArtist' classes which soon becomes very confusing even though another problem arises : when a category (master or release) does not return these members, they will be null. Though it might sound confusing as well I find it less confusing than the former situation as I've tackled the problem by simply not showing null members when visualizing these objects. Is this the right approach to follow ? An example of these differences : public class Artist { public List<Alias> Aliases { get; set; } public string DataQuality { get; set; } public List<Image> Images { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public List<string> NameVariations { get; set; } public string Profile { get; set; } public string Realname { get; set; } public string ReleasesUrl { get; set; } public string ResourceUrl { get; set; } public string Uri { get; set; } public List<string> Urls { get; set; } } public class ReleaseArtist { public string Join { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Anv { get; set; } public string Tracks { get; set; } public string Role { get; set; } public string ResourceUrl { get; set; } public int Id { get; set; } }

  • What is the proper way to use string::find to look for a word? [migrated]

    - by RubyKing
    How would I look through a string for a word rather then each character in that word. I have my code here and it always seems to find everything that is .obj even if its o or b or j or "." I checked the docuementation here but was unable to find an answer. Here is my code: string &str = *it; if(it->find(".obj")) { cout << "Found .Obj" << endl; } I also tried to use string::compare but that failed.

  • Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? Using string const keys in a class or using enumeration?

    - by user596314
    My idea is to avoid magic string keys in my Asp.Net MVC application. To do so, I want to create string constant keys to be shared in the application. For example, I can write TempData[MyClass.Message] or TempData[MyEnum.Message.ToString()] instead of TempData["Message"]. public class MyClass { public const string Message = "Message"; } and public enum MyEnum { Message, Others } My questions are: Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? Using string const keys in a class or using enumeration together with ToString()?
