• How can I make sound work without starting X?

  I have a headless machine connected to my sound system, and I am using it to run a music playing daemon that I control over the network. (Among other things) However, I can't seem to be able to have sound come out of my speakers without running X. I am running pulse audio in a system wide instance and my daemon is not running within X. Nevertheless, when my daemon is playing music without me hearing it, I can fix it by running startx in an unrelated session. After X starts, I can hear the sound. The sound disappears again if I kill the X server. Interestingly/annoyingly, the sound also stops after X has been running for a few minutes. This could possibly be because of a screen saver of some sort, but I haven't been able to verify or falsify this theory. So my current workaround is to ssh into the box whenever I want music and startx, and restart it every fifteen minutes or so. I'd like to do better. I have been able to verify the following: Adjustments in alsamixer have no effect on this problem. The relevant output channel is never muted In alsamixer, I can see no difference between when the sound is working and when it isn't Nothing is muted in pactl list There is no difference in the output from pactl list between before starting X and after it's started. • How do I get an HP 1018 laser printer to work on 12.04?

  edit : already printed on windows-machine Ubuntu 12.04, LJ 1018. I've tried making foo2zjs from sourse. I've downloaded firmware and placed it where necessarily manually from here I've also tried this - same as manual dowload but with some patches like stoping cups, etc.. I've fixed usbfs: process 11200 (usb) did not claim interface 0 before use problems using sudo rmmod usblp as described here. And now I have Aug 10 11:51:59 pav /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: usb://HP/LaserJet%201018?serial=KP07RLV... download failed. Aug 10 11:51:59 pav /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: loading HP LaserJet 1018 firmware /lib/firmware/hp/sihp1018.dl to CUPS USB device ... error. Before that prinet was stucking on "Sending data to printer". Now it's code is "Not connected". Unless ben@pav:~$ lsusb ... Bus 001 Device 015: ID 03f0:4117 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1018 Thank you.

• How can I work on a WordPress theme already installed in the root directory?

  I have WordPress installed at the root level of a website. I thought it would be easy enough to have a "coming soon" page called default.html and edit the .htaccess file as follows: AddHandler php5-script .php DirectoryIndex default.html index.php # BEGIN WordPress # END WordPress ...so that visitors to the site are sent to the default page, and I could manually specify index.php as my destination for testing. (This isn't a high-security job.) But index.php is redirecting me to the default page. When I remove the DirectoryIndex line, the index.php file is found automatically by visitors to the site root, but... that's the page I was trying to hide. What am I doing wrong with .htaccess and how can I get it to behave the way I want?

• Updated 11.10 - now trackpad and wifi won't work. How can these be fixed?

  I reinstalled 11.10 on my Asus EEE 1005HA, and my mousepad hasn't been working since. I've tried the workarounds mentioned in this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1867357 but, I get the message on the command line that says, "Synaptic isn't installed." When I go to the network settings to install Synaptic, I can't turn on wifi - no wireless options exist. How can I turn on wifi from the command line, on a new 11.10 install? Or, is there a way to turn on the trackpad and wifi from the install thumb drive? How can I move forward?

  Is it possible to install Ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire One D257-1682? I have a disc that I used to run Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop without incident. When trying to run it on my Aspire One, using an external DVD drive via USB, I get a ton of errors about missing files while it tries to load Ubuntu. I found a list of which versions of Ubuntu to run depending on which Aspire One model you have, but the D257 was not listed at all. I want to have Ubuntu on my Aspire One for coding Java and C++ since I don't have to sit at my desk for hours. Please help! -Avid

• Do you believe it's a good idea for Software Engineers to have to work as Quality Assurance Engineers for some period of time?

  I believe it is. Why? I've encountered many Software Engineers who believe they are somehow superior to QA engineers. I think it may help quench this belief if they do the job of a QA engineer for some time, and realize that it is a unique and valuable skill-set of its own. The better a Software Engineer is at testing their own programs, the less cost in time their code incurs when making its way through the rest of the software development life-cycle. The more time a Software Engineer spends thinking about how a program can break, the more often they are to consider these cases as they are developing them, thus reducing bugs in the end product. A Software Engineer's definition of "complete" is always interesting...if they have spent time as a QA engineer maybe this definition will more closely match the designer of the software's. What do you all think?

  Hi, I just can't understand how Upstart's rc job definition in Natty 11.04 works. To illustrate the problem, here is the definition (empty lines and comments are left out): start on runlevel [0123456] stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL] export RUNLEVEL export PREVLEVEL console output env INIT_VERBOSE task exec /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL Let's suppose we currently are in runlevel 2 and the rc job is stopped (that is exactly the situation after booting my box and logging in via SSH). Now, let's assume that the system switches to runlevel 3, for example due to a command like "telinit 3" given by root. What will happen to the rc job? Obviously, the rc job will be started since it is currently stopped and the event runlevel 3 is matching the start events. But from now on, things are unclear to me: According to the manual $RUNLEVEL evaluates to the new runlevel when the job is started (that means 3 in our example). Therefore, the next stanza "stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL]" translates to "stop on runlevel [!3]"; that means we have a first stanza which will trigger the job, but the second stanza will never stop the job and seems to be useless. Since I know that the Ubuntu / Upstart people won't do useless things, I must be heavily misunderstanding something. I would be grateful for any explanation. While trying to understand this, an additional question came to my mind. If I had contradicting start and stop triggers, for example start on foo stop on foo what would happen? I swear I never will do that, but I am nevertheless very interested in how Upstart handles that on the theoretical level. Thank you very much! Editing the question as a reaction on geekosaur's first answer: I can see the parallelism, but it is not that easy (at least, not to me). Let's assume the job aurrently is still running, and a new runlevel event comes in (of course, the new runlevel is different from the current one). Then, the following should happen: 1) The job is single instance. That means that "start on ..." won't be triggered since the job is currently running; $RUNLEVEL is not touched. 2) "stop on ..." will be triggered since the new runlevel is different from $RUNLEVEL, so the job will be aborted. 3) Now, the job is stopped and waiting. I can't see how it is restarted with the new runlevel. AFAIK, initctl emits events only once, so "start on ..." won't be triggered and the new runlevel won't be entered. I know that I still misunderstanding something, and I am grateful for explanations. Thank you very much!

I ran the install-css.sh script, and it completed with no problems. Now I spend 3 days to do that , came across various problems, many Stack Overflow questions and in the end I solve it. Now 4 months after someone told me that there is some error in the code. Now by that I completely forgot about (60%) of how I did it and why I do this way. I document the code but I can't write the whole story of that in the code. Then I have to spend much time on code to find what was the problem so that I added this line etc. I want to know that is there any way that i can log steps in completing the project. So that I can see how I end up with code, what errors I got, what questions I asked on SO and etc. How people do it in real time? Which software to use? I know in our project management software called JIRA we have tasks but that does not cover what steps I took to solve that tasks. What is the best way so that when I look back at my 2 year old project, I know how I solve particular task?

  I am currently experimenting with using Ubuntu as a my main OS instead of Windows 7. So far, pretty much everything is working fine, except for an issue that I am having with my touchpad. I have a Dell XPS 16 (1640) with a Synaptics touchpad. It works out of the box, but it seems that it stops working after returning from hibernation mode. This problem has also been addressed in an earlier bug, but judging from this bugreport, it should be fixed by now. I am running the 2.6.35-23-generic-pae kernel. Any ideas?

However it is one that has been bugging me since the trouble strated. Let me explain. I have this Web Site. If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

  Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

  I'll try to keep this simple: I'm 29, been dabbling with computers for the past 10 years, had entry level jobs in tech support for different apps, been fixing computers for a while and now want to specialize in something. I'm not 100% stranger to programming but haven't gone past if/then/else with anything. A bit of JavaScript, PHP, Python and currently checking out the "SELECT" statement in SQL :)) I'm curious about programming, I enjoy it and I'm thinking of making a living out of it. So, while I'm at it, why not earn a bit more than the average Joe? So, that's why I'm checking what the best solution, the best learning path and the most useful languages are considering: a) how easy/fast can you find a job by knowing it b) how much would I be able to earn c) how fast can I learn it By reading 10-20 articles online I've come up with an example, but I'm here for some expert advice. Example: * ratings from a) and b) point of view #1 sql ; #2 java ; #3 html (please don't start the markup language debate) ; #4 javascript From this ratings, I'd say a good way to go is learn html/css/(javascript or php) for the web part of apps, some SQL/MySQL/whateverSQL for holding data and loads of Java for the program itself. Please let me know if this is a good idea and if so, what should be the order for learning all of the above. Else, please let me know a better way and why it would be better. Many thanks for taking the time to read my question. Best wishes to you guys Edit: if I think Java + SQL + HTML&JavaScript is the way to go, does the order I'm learning them in matter? Or can I try to learn them all at once?

• Why are my videos playing speeded up with no audio, but work fine if I log in as a guest?

  Since the start of this week I have been experiencing a glitch in the multimedia on my Samsung R518 laptop. I have 2 problems: Videos in every player are speeded up around 2 or 4 times (including youtube.com (both HTML5 and flash variants), any other video on the web and videos on my laptop played by Totem Media Player), exception is VLC player, but 2nd problem does concern even that. There is no sound - simple as that (with or without headphones plugged in). These all problems are now, and has not seen before, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 after it was possible, and from start I didn't have anything from this - it just started in this week. I haven't even putted new software in. I have more or less solved the question (kind of) - I just logged in as a guest - and it all works, but when I make a new user - it does not. Please help me.   I'm developing a 3D engine in software, and so I must compute Z sorting manually. I'm currently using the painters algorithm to sort triangles and then drawing them back-to-front. This causes artifacts that I'm trying to correct. Would using a dynamic BSP-tree ensure "correct Z sorting" of triangles? Why? Because the bounding volumes of triangles would be similar? Since I would have a single "world" BSP tree, would I have to remove and re-add any moved/scaled/rotated object into the tree? Is it possible to add triangles into a BSP tree without the expensive cutting process? Why do you need to cut triangles on the axis planes anyway? Is it faster to traverse a BSP tree from any angle, than to sort all tris each draw like the painters algorithm?

  The title may be confusing, but I will elaborate it here. I am trying to figure our how much time and effort each person spend during some project. I divided roles into: - junior developer (works mainly on UI and some light things) - senior developer (develops complex logic, database structures, etc.) - lead developer (leads the team, usually most experienced person) - negotiator/resolver (a person who directly talk to a client trying to either negotiate terms and timeframe or to clarify vagueness presented by a team leader) My AIM is to calculate percentage of role's involvement based on quality, not time (obviously a junior will spend most time in project, but with the least quality). In the end I would get a table which may look like this: Total: 100% ---------------- Junior: 10% Senior: 50% Lead: 30% Negotiator: 10% Can this be achieved? Has anyone found any source which may help me?
