• portlet 2.0 (jsr286) development with spring

  Hi! We are discussing whether it's a good idea to switch from plain portlet development on a liferay installation to spring webmvc portlet based development. We're starting the development of some portlets soon, so now is the time. But the problem I see is that we'd like to use some of the portlet 2.0 features, which won't work with versions older than spring 3.0. (Right?) Has anyone insight, if it's worth the waiting? (When is 3.0 scheduled anyway?) Is the current milestone stable enough? Our first real release will be in the last quarter of the year, so the springsource guys have some time left to get a final out of the door... ;-) Any ideas?

• Drupal Custom Form with Filters

  I'm displaying cars on a page created with a view and displays. I want to be able to create a form on the home page to allow people to select the 'make', which will then update the 'models' list based on the 'make' the user selects, 'year' to and from, and 'amount' to and from. What the user selects will of course alter the list of used cars, whether that's on the existing used cars page or a new page. I would be happy to create a custom module if required, just need some direction. Thanks !

  What interview questions should people expect as a junior C and C++ developer? Code questions or more of theory? Solutions in pseudo-code or in C code? Maybe I'm misinterpreting the word "junior", but I have no idea what would anyone ask me if I have no C work experiences. I'm bit afraid of tricky questions with pointers, so I'd like to be sure what should I look up before actually going there. • Extending User object in Django: User model inheritance or use UserProfile?

  To extend the User object with custom fields, the Django docs recommend using UserProfiles. However, according to this answer to a question about this from a year or so back: extending django.contrib.auth.models.User also works better now -- ever since the refactoring of Django's inheritance code in the models API. And articles such as this lay out how to extend the User model with custom fields, together with the advantages (retrieving properties directly from the user object, rather than through the .get_profile()). So I was wondering whether there is any consensus on this issue, or reasons to use one or the other. Or even what the Django team currently think?

• MYSQL Fast Insert dependent on flag from a seperate table

  Hi all. For work I'm dealing with a large database (160 million + rows a year, 10 years of data) and have a quandary; A large percentage of the data we upload is null data and I'd like to stop it from being uploaded. The data in question is spatial in nature, so I have one table like so: idLocations (Auto-increment int, PK) X (float) Y (foat) Alwaysignore (Bool) Which is used as a reference in a second table like so: idLocations (Int, PK, "FK") idDates (Int, PK, "FK") DATA1 (float) DATA2 (float) ... DATA7 (float) So, Ideally I'd like to find a method where I can do something like: INSERT INTO tblData(idLocations, idDates, DATA1, ..., DATA7) VALUES (...), ..., (...) WHERE VALUES(idLocations) NOT LIKE (SELECT FROM tblLocation WHERE alwaysignore=TRUE ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE DATA1=VALUES(DATA1) So, for my large batch of input data (250 values in a block), ignore the inserts where the idLocations matches an idLocations values flagged with alwaysignore. • Database security / scaling question

  Typically I use a database such as MySQL or PostGreSQL on the same machine as the application using it, which makes access easy and secure. I'm just now building the first site that will have a separate physical database server (later this year it will). I'm wondering 3 things: (security) What things should I look into for starters pertaining to security of accessing a separate machine's database? (scalability) Are their scalability issues that I should think about pertaining to this (technology agnostic)? (more ServerFaultish but related) If starting the DB out on the same physical server (using a separate VMWare VM) and later moving to a different physical server, are there implicit problems that I'll have to deal with? Isn't another VM still accessed via localhost? If these questions are completely ludicrous, I apologize to you DB experts.

  I was looking for a platform where widgets developed using various technologies like Java can communicate with each other. In other words When I add widgets to an interface I need them to talk to each other. For example A Click event in one widget should trigger an event in some other widget. I have been looking into the web for solutions and ways to do it, but couldnt find anything concrete. Any pointers or information on this would be great. • IA-32: Pushing a byte onto a stack isn't possible on Pentium, why?

  Hi, I've come to learn that you cannot push a byte directly onto the Intel Pentium's stack, can anyone explain this to me please? The reason that I've been given is because the esp register is word-addressable (or, that is the assumption in our model) and it must be an "even address". I would have assumed decrementing the value of some 32-bit binary number wouldn't mess with the alignment of the register, but apparently I don't understand enough. I have tried some NASM tests and come up that if I declare a variable (bite db 123) and push it on to the stack, esp is decremented by 4 (indicating that it pushed 32-bits?). But, "push byte bite" (sorry for my choice of variable names) will result in a kind error: test.asm:10: error: Unsupported non-32-bit ELF relocation Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated during this troubled time. I am first year undergraduate so sorry for my naivety in any of this. Tim

• Next month, same day in PHP

  I got a last time (and urgent) requeriment of an "event" that needs to be scheduled the same day of every month. Say of you set the start date on the 1st May you should get the next events on the 1st of Jun, 1 Jul etc. The problem comes with a start date on the 31st (the next ones could be 30 or 28 depending on the month) Considering that there are months with different numbers of days (28,30,31) depending on the month itself and the year... what would ba an easy way to setup this? Consider the following (and flawed) nextmonth function: $events = array() function nextmonth($date) { return $date+(60*60*24*30); } $curr = $start; while($curr < $end) { $events[ = $curr; $curr = nextmonth($curr); } Edited to add: The problem for me is, simply enought, is to solve what the number of days of any given month is and thus get the next corresponding date..

• Archiving an Entire Rails Site

  I have a Ruby on Rails site that was only needed for a short period of time during which users added various objects to a mySQL database, commenting on them, associating themselves with them, etc. etc. etc. The question is this: the site is no longer needed until a week next year around this time when I will clear the database and use it again (starting from scratch). What's the best way to archive the current site so that the existing content is still viewable but no new content can be added? By best way, I mean the method by which the least system resources will be used, the server will be the safest, etc. Any suggestions?

  I have a list of objects. Each object has an integer quantity and a DateTime variable which contains a month and year value. I'd like to traverse the list and pad the list by adding missing months (with quantity 0) so that all consecutive months are represented in the list. What would be the best way to accomplish this? • How many Scala web-frameworks are there?

I've been using Erlang for the last year to implement server-side software, but I've never wrote web-applications before. It will be a great experience.   Could anyone please help me? I am at the last chance saloon and losing a lot of traffic. Any help would be greatfully received. After a year based on my permalink structure, all posts were in the root so have been picked up by Google as: snowmenu.com/postname Since changing my categories and permalink structure, I need the years worth of posts on Google to be redirected to: snowmenu.com/ski-snowboard-winter-sports-news/postname Is there a way to make this happen via .htaccess? • iPhone SDK: am I still allowed to develop with SDK 3.1.3 on Leopard?

  Mac OS X Snow Leopard's been in stores for a while now. Sadly, the Mac that I'll be developing on is still running Leopard, and I don't have admin access to the Mac either so I can't do anything about the OS version. Therefore I can only use iPhone SDK 3.1.3, which we've obtained thanks to this answer, to start building apps on that Mac. Am I still allowed to develop apps with this setup and deploy for iPhone OS 3.x to the App Store? Keyword is allowed because all I've seen so far are technical questions/answers, but I'm not certain if Apple's going to be a jerk and shun me because I can't use a Snow Leopard Mac despite having only started this year (and I don't even want to get started about iPhone SDK 4's revised agreement, not with its NDA still in place...).

I need to : store them securely use them to analysis (mostly time-oriented) retrieve some raw data occasionally It would be nice if it could be used with JasperReports or BIRT My first shot was Infobright Community - just a column-oriented, read-only storing mechanism for MySQL On the other hand, people says that NoSQL approach could be better. Hadoop+Hive looks promissing, but the documentation looks poor and the version number is less than 1.0 . I heard about Hypertable, Pentaho, MongoDB .... Do you have any recommendations ? (Yes, I found some topics here, but it was year or two ago)

• Dropping support for IE6, Is swfObject still relevant?

  We have recently dropped support for IE6 at my job. The other developers have have opted for a generic object embed method: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="example.swf" width="800" height="600" > <param name="movie" value="example.swf"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> </object> This seems to work in all modern browsers but it really rubs me the wrong way. I'm sure this is wrong in several ways and is clearly a big step back in sophistication. So my question is in 2 parts, what is wrong with the above method? Is swfObject still best practice and what issues does it solve (besides IE6 click-activate)? Citations less then a year old would also be helpful.

• Comparison of SSL Certificates

  My web application most definately needs an SSL certificate I was looking into godaddy's: http://www.godaddy.com/ssl/ssl-certificates.aspx The standard doesn't appear to have the lock in the URL bar, which a lot of users might not consider secure... How true is this? The Standard has https:// obviously in the bar, but is that enough to persuade users to want to enter in confidential information?? I'd appreciate any experience anyone has had with this. or any alterates they've dealt with. Is $100/year really the going rate for an SSL cert that has the lock in the url bar? Thanks SO!

How do I stop the search from allowing those other programs in? I run Ubuntu 9.10 with Xapian as my search back-end.

  In my grails application, some of my domain classes will never be changed by Users. However, some maintenance work is sometimes necessary, and administrator should be able to create/edit few instances from time to time (let's say twice a year). I would like to set a read-only 2nd level cache strategy for these domain classes (static mapping = { cache usage: 'read-only' } ) AND I would like to be able to 'disable' (in very particular situations) the read-only strategy in order to udate some instances via Grails scaffolding edit view. Is it possible? What do you advise me to do? EDIT: The solution I am implementing is a mix of Pascal and Burt answers (see comments). Both answers are great and helpful. So I got a dilemna for choosing the accepted answer! Anyway, thank you.

• Where to go after Informix 4GL?

  We have a large homegrown ERP system written in Informix 4GL. Currently we are running on old Sun hardware, Solaris 8, and a ten year old version of 4GL and Informix. We need to move on, and one option obviously is to get the latest versions of 4GL & Informix, installed on new hardware (probably Linux/Intel). However I believe there are options for migrating 4GL programmes to other development platforms. Does anyone have experience of that? If so, what platforms, how did it go, what are the pros and cons?
