• Embedded BI for ASP.NET

  Can anyone recommend a decent business intelligence & reporting application that can be integrated into an OEM application? Primary requirements are: Administrators can define cubes/dimensions etc (or we - the OEM - can predefine some) Report designers can easily inspect data by visually selecting dimensions, filters etc in an adhoc way that is quickly output with little upfront investment Report designers can design a report based on dimensions/filters and save their definition to be run as required Report viewers can view the reports defined by the report designers All of this plus in .NET that can be branded/integrated into our existing web application's look and feel. Permissions need to work off our user/groups system. I've found a few that look good, but they are all in Java and I don't want to ask our clients to install ASP.NET for the app, and then Java, tomcat etc just for reporting. Thanks

  Hi everyone, We're going through an ASP.Net MVC book and are having trouble with using an extenstion method within our view. The Extension method looks like this: using System; using System.Runtime.CompilerServices; using System.Web.Mvc; namespace MvcBookApplication { public static class HtmlHelperExtensions { public static string JQueryGenerator(this HtmlHelper htmlHelper, string formName, object model); } } We use the extension method in our view like this: <%=Html.JQueryGenerator("createmessage", ViewData.Model)%> The problem is, that line of code says JQueryGenerator isn't a recognized method of HtmlHelper. I believe we've got the correct references set in the web project, but are there other things we can check? There's no using statement for views, is there?

• asp.net mvc: handling no-javascript

  Hello, I'm working on a asp.net mvc2 app. I have been using jquery to do various different things in all of my views. They are work from a regular browser quite well. But I'm trying to figure out a good way to get the functionality working with browsers with javascript disabled (like mobile browsers). Is there a way to define a whole different view for non javascript browsers? A specific example of what I'm trying to do is, I have a with it's onClick calling a javascript that does $.post() to a controller. What's a good way to make it, so, it works the way it works right now (doing ajax calls) with regular javascript-enabled browsers and it a also works with javascript-incapable browsers, doing a full postback ? • ASP.NET Session expires in no time?

  Weired problem! ASP.NET Session expires instantly. In my web.config I have this session settings: <sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="10000" /> AFAIK the timeout attribute's value is in minutes and can't be greater than 525,600 minutes (1 year). I don't understand what I am doing wrong here. Why is the session expiring. Is it a server memory issue? I don't think so, the server is pretty descent and it has only one site which isn't doing much after all. Ideas? EDIT: After setting the cookiless attribute to true, and while noticing the session id on the url, I can see that the session id CHANGING. I assume that this means the session is expiring. The IIS Settings are correct AFAIK (the enable session state checkbox is checked, and the value of the time is 20). A Picture is worth 100 words:

This should supposedly, call the controller's action and return a result that should be replaced with the placeholder DIV. If I add a SUBMIT button to the form, it works perfectly, but when I invoke the submit via jQuery, the whole page is refreshed, and the content returned by the server is displayed in the newly displayed page. I've been searching on SO & Google for a breakdown of the various View Engines available for ASP.NET MVC, but haven't found much more than simple high-level descriptions of what a view engine is. I'm not necessarily looking for "best" or "fastest" but rather some real world comparisons of advantages / disadvantages of the major players (e.g. the default WebFormViewEngine, MvcContrib View Engines, etc.) for various situations. I think this would be really helpful in determining if switching from the default engine would be advantageous for a given project or development group. Has anyone encountered such a comparison?

The customer would then simply add the report file to a custom folder, and could access it directly from our application. Using a web app, how is this possible. It seems like anything created, using ssrs, crystal, or even telerik reporting must be embedded. What are some methods for providing custom reports to users of an asp.net web application?

I am working for a large Hospital and have written an Ambulance page that shows ambulance arriving in a datagrid with the time of arriving at the hospital in minutes and seconds (plus other info). In this model I've a property called Rides (shown below), which exposes a list, which I obviously not want to be replaced entirely. So I made it readonly. However, this way I can't use the databinding features anymore. • Asp.net text box is only returning the first value

  C sharp newbie question...I have a simple asp.net form that has a textbox that collects phonenumbers to send SMS messages. If I bypass the form and hardcode the numbers using the following format: "2133211234",#1233211234" the code works fine. However when i try to use this same format using my form, the sms will ONLY send to the first number. I have a feeling i'm missing out on some property on my form that will accept all of the values. also any idea how how i can add some lines of code that will allow users to enter numbers like this: 3123211234,4123212344 and have it converted to the format above when the number is submitted? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Global "ajax call" notification with asp.net mvc/jquery

  I need to be notified any time a largeish asp.net mvc web application makes an ajax call to the server. We're using both jquery, and the built-in Ajax.* methods to do the remote calls, and I would like a global way of knowing when we make a call without having to manually inject some sort of "IsMakingCall" method to every request. The root problem we're trying to solve is session timeout. If the user leaves a page up and goes to lunch (for example), they get errors when they get back because the ajax call is returning the login page instead of the expected json or partial html result. My idea was to have a js timer which would be reset any time we make an ajax call. That way, if the timer runs out (ie. their session has now timed out) I can just auto-log them out. This is how sites like bank of america and mint.com work. Thanks!

  Stackoverflow uses OpenId as many other websites. However, I rarely need to provide my OpenId to Stackoverflow while with other OpenId enabled websites, I have to do it once a day or week. This suggests to me that the expiry of the session is with the website and not the OpenId provider. Looking at the DotNetOpenId code in ASP MVC, I can see that after a successful authentication by the OpenId provider FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie is called with the identifier and a boolean parameter to determine if the cookie should be persisted. How can I force this cookie to expire, say in 2020 instead of whatever the default value is.

The Tenant in question is determined from RouteData in a base controller's OnActionExecuting. How do I tell StructureMap to construct TenantContext(tenantID); where tenantID is derived from my RouteData or some base controller property? Base Controller Given the following route: {tenant}/{controller}/{action}/{id} My base controller retrieves and stores the correct Tenant based on the {tenant} URL parameter. Using Tenant, a repository with an ITenantContext can be constructed to retrieve only data that is relevant to that tenant. Based on the other DI questions, could AbstractFactory be a solution?

• IIS7 Custom Errror Handling Troubles for Classic ASP Website

  I recently upgraded a web server from IIS6 to IIS7 for a classic asp application and now experience a bizarre error. In the IIS6 set up there was a custom 500-100 page that functioned properly by capturing errors and delivering an email with error code, error source and error type values. That same structure was set up on the IIS7 machine but now the error emails contain no error information at all. They all come through values such as 'NO SPECIFIC ERROR CODE', 'NO SPECIFIC ERROR DESCRIPTION', 'NO SPECIFIC ERROR SOURCE'. Any one have some thoughts on why my custom error page cannot capture the error information?

  I have a question about the returnUrl querystring parameter that is appended by ASP.Net when attempted to hit a page that requires authentication. In looking at Microsoft NerdDinner Sample's LogOn action (along with every other 'sample authentication code' I see on the 'net), it just has the ReturnUrl parameter declared in the action's signature and uses it directly in a Redirect() call. However, back in the WebForms days and using Membership Controls, we use to use the FormsAuthentication.GetReturnUrl() call. Besides returning the 'default url' if no url was specified in the querystring, it also does a few security checks (Cross App Redirect and 'IsDangerousUrl()'). Are those no longer a concern or are all the sample 'log on' actions I'm seeing all over the 'net just ignoring those issues?

  Hey Guys, I am wondering if anyone can shed some lights on the situation. I am about to start a project and trying to figure out what solution is best to go with asp.net or java jsp pages I have personally worked alot with .net and am really happy with the framework and Visual studio as IDE I find it easy to work with and there is a massive community support behind .net, i can get alot done quickly I have not every written anything use java jsp, there will be a learning curve here , so my experience is limited here. however after seeing jira i am very impressed with its capabilities, it has changed alot since the old days ( java 1.2 ) that i used to work with, and the fact that it runs under linux is a huge plus, so i am trying to decide is the learning curve, worth the price ? so given the situation above what would you recommended?   I apologize in advance for this likely being asked before. I have an asp.net 2.0 web application and am trying to set the session timeout. My first attempt was to add this to the web.config. < sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="300" Users would tell me though that after about 20 minutes of being idle and then trying to do something again on the site they'd be redirected back to the login page. So now I'm trying timeout="60" in my < forms tag in the web.config. I also tried Session.Timeout=60 in my global.asax. Should these work? Do I need something else? Thank you for your time and help.

  I'd like to use SSL for the post action on the login page of my MVC 1.0 app. I've seen some articles related to the [RequireSSL] attribute in ASP.NET MVC Futures. However, since this works using a redirect, I assume it's not an option (can't redirect a POST, correct?). Ultimately, my goal is to get the Html.BeginForm method to render "https://..." as the form's action so that I can secure the information being posted (login info). How have others handled this?

• Generic HTTP Handler in ASP.Net

  Hello all, I want to write a custom HTTP Handler in ASP.Net (I'm using C# currently) that filters all requests to, say, .aspx files, and then, depending on the page name that comes with the requests, I redirect the user to a page. So far, I've written a handler that filter "*", that is, everything. Let's say I receive a request for "Page.aspx", and want to send the user to "AnotherPage.aspx". So I call Redirect on that response and pass "AnotherPage.aspx" as the new page. The problem is that this will once more trigger my handler, which will do nothing. This will leave the user without any response. So, is there a way to send the request to the other handlers (cascade the message) once I've dealt with it? Thanks, Bruno

  I need to create Unit Tests for an ASP.NET MVC 2.0 web site. The site uses Windows Authentication. I've been reading up on the necessity to mock the HTTP context for code that deals with the HttpContext. I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on the DI pattern as well. (Give the class an attribute of type IRepository and then pass in a Repository object when you instantiate the controller.) What I don't understand, however, is the proper way to Mock the Windows Principal object available through User.Identity. Is this part of the HttpContext? Does any body have a link to an article that demonstrates this (or a recommendation for a book)? Thanks, Trey Carroll

• Does Google index HTTPS ASP.NET pages?

  I have an online application that all of its pages use HTTPS. I have 3 questions: Does Google index HTTPS pages? I have a password protected single ASP.NET page (using HTTPS). Password protection is basically achieved by a Session object. When the correct password is entered, it hides the login panel and displays the same page which has a sensitive data. Is this page indexed by Google? I have a Secure folder that I implemented Forms Authentication. All pages in folder use HTTPS as well. Are the pages in this folder indexed by Google?
