• UTF-8 xml file shows Gibberish

  I have a UTF-8 encoded xml file, which was exported from a Wordpress MySQL database. While the file is saved as UTF-8, and the encoding is UTF-8, I get gibberish instead of the Hebrew text that is supposed to be in there, which looks like this: ™×•×˜×•×ª How can I find the original encoding or charset and convert the text into proper Hebrew? PHP's mb_detect_encoding($str); returns UTF-8 Tried all sorts of php encoding functions, with different settings and input/output charsets, but they all just print different looking gibberish blocks, like: ÃâÃËÃâ¢Ãâ¢ÃËà and ?? ××©×ž× ...Any Ideas how to go about this?

  Here's what I am looking to accomplish, I have a class that has an enum of some values and I want to subclass that and add more values to the enum.   I have a window that get its data from another class that is passed as DataContext. But I now also want to do data binding within the window. • C# - How can i open a second winform asynchronously but still behave as a child to the parent form?

  I am creating an application and i would like to implement a progress window that appears when a lengthy process is taking place. I've created a standard windows form project to which i've created my app using the default form. I've also created a new form to use as a progress window. The problem arises when i open the progress window (in a function) using: ProgressWindow.ShowDialog(); When this command is encountered, the focus is on the progress window and i assume it's now the window who's mainloop is being processed for events. The downside is it blocks the execution of my lengthy operation in the main form. If i open the progress window using: ProgressWindow.Show(); Then the window opens correctly and now doesn't block the execution of the main form but it doesn't act as a child (modal) window should, i.e. allows the main form to be selected, is not centered on the parent, etc.. Any ideas how i can open a new window but continue processing in the main form?

• Random access gzip stream

  I'd like to be able to do random access into a gzipped file. I can afford to do some preprocessing on it (say, build some kind of index), provided that the result of the preprocessing is much smaller than the file itself. Any advice? My thoughts were: Hack on an existing gzip implementation and serialize its decompressor state every, say, 1 megabyte of compressed data. Then to do random access, deserialize the decompressor state and read from the megabyte boundary. This seems hard, especially since I'm working with Java and I couldn't find a pure-java gzip implementation :( Re-compress the file in chunks of 1Mb and do same as above. This has the disadvantage of doubling the required disk space. Write a simple parser of the gzip format that doesn't do any decompressing and only detects and indexes block boundaries (if there even are any blocks: I haven't yet read the gzip format description)

  If I'm not wrong, because of its nature in factory method there is cyclic dependency: Base class needs to know subclasses because it creates them, and subclasses need to know base class. Having cyclic dependency is bad programming practice, is not it? Practically I implemented a factory, I have problem above, even I added #ifndef MYCLASS_H #define MYCLASS_H #endif I'm still getting Compiler Error C2504 'class' : base class undefined And this error disappers when I remove subclass include from base class header.

• Wordpress TinyMCE keeps it clean, how?

  I've noticed that the latest version of TinyMCE on Wordpress manages text in a very 'clean' way. Pasting from MS-Word it strips out all html text blocks, like <p>'s, and shows the text cleared of any odd formatting preserving only links, bolds and underlines. On top of that the source code format is very clear. No <br />'s everywhere. You only see \n's and the expected <strong><u><i> tags. I've been messing up with TinyMCE configuration files for some time with little success. I did manage to get all formatting removed. I can't, however, put TinyMCE to display the \n's as <br />'s lie Wordpress does it. Tried preformatted : true with no success whatsoever. Has anyone here been able to do it? • Remove another user's lock obtained with sp_getapplock on SQL Server

  We have a system that uses sp_getapplock to create an exclusive mutex any time someone opens an order in the GUI. This is used to prevent multiple people from making changes to an order simultaneously. Sometimes people will open an order and go home, leaving it open. This effectively blocks anyone from being able to make changes to the order. I then get emails, calls and end up doing a kill <spid> in enterprise manager. Obviously I've gotten sick of this and want to make a quick self-service webform. The main problem I've run into is that kill requires sysadmin privileges, which I do not want to give to the user that the our website runs as. I have tried sp_releaseapplock but this doesn't let you release another user's lock (even when calling it as a sysadmin). So, finally my question; does anyone know of an alternative method to release a lock that was obtained by another user using sp_getapplock?

  Suppose that I've queued a work item in a ThreadPool, but the work item blocks if there is no data to process (reading from a BlockingQueue). If the queue is empty and there will be no more work going into the queue, then I must call the Thread.Interrupt method if I want to interrupt the blocking task, but how does one do the same thing with a ThreadPool? The code might look like this: void Run() { try { while(true) { blockingQueue.Dequeue(); doSomething(); } } finally { countDownLatch.Signal(); } } I'm aware that the best thing to do in this situation is use a regular Thread, but I'm wondering if there is a ThreadPool equivalent way to interrupt a work item.

• Which audio playback technology do I need for this?

  I have trouble choosing the right audio playback technology. There's a ton of technologies to use on the iPhone, it's so confusing. What I need to do is this: start playing short sounds ranging between 0.1 and 2 seconds high quality playback, no crackle (I heard some of the iPhone audio playback technologies do a crackle sound on start or end, which is bad!) ability to start playback of a sound, while there's already another one playing right now (two, three or more sounds at the same time) What would you suggest here, and why? • Python constructor does weird things with optional parameters

  Can you help me understand of the behaviour and implications of the python __init__ constructor. It seems like when there is an optional parameter and you try and set an existing object to a new object the optional value of the existing object is preserved and copied. Ok that was confusing... so look at an example I concocted below. In the code below I am trying to make a tree structure with nodes and possibly many children . In the first class NodeBad, the constructor has two parameters, the value and any possible children. The second class NodeGood only takes the value of the node as a parameter. Both have an addchild method to add a child to a node. When creating a tree with the NodeGood class, it works as expected. However, when doing the same thing with the NodeBad class, it seems as though a child can only be added once! The code below will result in the following output: Good Tree 1 2 3 [< 3 >] Bad Tree 1 2 2 [< 2 >, < 3 >] Que Pasa? • Is it possible to call a user-space callback function from kernel space in Linux (ioctl)?

  Is it possible to expand the ioctl interface in Linux so that the user-space application can send a pointer to a function to the kernel space driver? I'm in particular thinking of ways to handle the stream in user-controllable way but doing it in the kernel. Those operations could be attached to the kernel module but this would make development a lot easier as I wouldn't need to mess with the kernel during development. More specifically, this would be the process: Data is read by the driver to a buffer. Data is handled by these user-defined functions in place. Some more handling is done, possibly with some HW blocks. Data is used by a user-space application.

• Can I reset a forgotten owner password with iText?

  With iText I can use Java to open a pdf and write it. If the pdf has an owner password I can still open it but it can not be written. Clearly the content is readable, it seems like at that point you could simply write the document to a new file. iText doesn't allow this, it throws a bad password exception. Is there a way around this?

  Pygame has shockingly bad quality. It's not worth my game. But then I still need to play music and sounds. What can I use which works with OSX, Linux and Windows and plays the sound properly unlike the terrible pygame module? pyMedia doesn't compile on OSX. It clearly isn't very good. Thank you.
