• VirtualBox VRDP server doesn't start on Windows

  I've installed VirtualBox 4.1.8 on a Windows 7 Ultimate host system. I've set up an Arch Linux VM that starts just fine from the VirtualBox GUI. However, when I try to start it with VBoxHeadless --startvm <vm_name> it prints the following Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.1.6 (C) 2008-2011 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. and then it just sits there. I never get the VRDE server is listening on port 3389 message like when I start a headless VM on a Linux machine. Do I have to configure anything else in order to get the VRDE server to run?

• Scroll bar for vim(curses-based one, not gvim)?

  As a Linux user, I have been quite comfortable with CLI and TUI tools, but I miss the little scrollbar present in almost every GUI program. It has always been easier for me to know how long the file is and where I am from the scrollbar instead of "9752 lines, 24%". What I expect is a ASCII scrollbar that looks like | | | | # # # | | | and I can configure to appear on the left or right (and if on the left, the relative position to line numbers and fold marks). Is there already a Vim plugin to do this, or how can I write my own one? Vim's plugin framework doesn't seem to support such UI modifications directly.

• freebsd dev server on virtualbox over windows

  I need a unixy environment for development purposes. I hate doing things on windows but it is more stable for daily use and I don't have a mac, so I'm having to use windows (7). I want to run freebsd in a virtual machine, configure it to be the localhost server, be able to connect using ssh (within my home-network) and be able to install vbox guest addons. If guest additions aren't the best, I can use solaris or linux flavours. I need no gui. I don't know anything about network stuff, so I need a detailed explanation from vise people here, or a nice doc to read. Edit : To be more specific as requested, I use following on unices: *django 1.4 *apache *python (2.7) *emacs *mysql *probably node.js *bash scripting I use windows to be able to do daily things easily, like connecting to my tablet, browsing and learning java. And I don't want to use linux as my desktop os, beacuse it gets broken a lot, it's annoying to maintain wlan problems and some more.

• How can I increase the size of the hard disk used by my Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) vm?

  In Virtual Machine Manager admin console, I used the 'New virtual machine' wizard and created a machine from an existing template. When I got to the Configure Hardware step, I selected the primary hard disk (which is a dynamic) disk and tried to increase it's maximum size, but this control is disabled so I can't increase it. It's not big enough for my purposes. how do I increase the maximum size of the hard-disk? Thanks. Edit: I am able to add a second hard disk of a size I specify. That's not useful though as I'm trying to install some software, some of which insists on being on drive C.

• wireless printer - entering WPA - is there a quicker way?

  I have a wireless printer (Brother DCP-585CW). The wireless setup instruction says I should enter the WPA key to the printer. The key is entered using up and down buttons on the printer. So, I am supposed to enter 64 characters using up and down buttons. To enter 1 character, it takes on average (24+10)/2 = 17 times pressing the button (digits start after 24 letters). So 17*64 = 1088 times. Is there a quicker way to setup a wireless printer? Maybe there is a Windows program that discovers printers connected to computer through USB or Ethernet (my printer has both sockets) and allows to pre-configure it for wireless usage (enter the long WPA key)? Update There is BRAdmin program and it allows to set up almost all wireless settings... almost - all except WPA :(

• IPSec VPN IP addresses

  I have an IPSec VPN on my Windows 7 machine (all using the native Windows 7 gateway). The host I am connecting to has different ISAKMP "Phase 1" and "Phase 2" IP addresses. As I understand, the Phase 1 address is that of the IPsec endpoint, to which I can connect just fine. The Phase 2 address is found in their "crypto map", and the addresses need to match. At the moment, both my Phase 1 and Phase 2 addresses are configured the same. On my side, I get the error "Error 791: The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" How can I configure the Phase 2 IP address for my Windows 7 IPSec VPN to be different to the IPSec endpoint address?

• Audio Line-In on Ubuntu/Linux Mint

  I'm currently on Windows, and want to switch to Linux, but some hardware issues are preventing me. Mainly, I have a sound card that supports Line-In. On Windows, anything I plug into the line-in gets outputted to the speakers. However, when I installed Linux, because there is not a control application that comes with the driver, I have no idea how to set this up. I tried going to the sound settings and it doesn't seem to be there. I also want to configure it for 2.1 sound, and do not know how to do that... Anyone here done it before? • Multiple Windows Desktop areas for Full-Screen applications

  Is it possible to run multiple instances of Windows Explorer within a single user session, or configure multiple desktops that are portions of a screen? I don't know the best way to describe what I want to achieve, but here's a picture of what I've got: I've got a 4 monitor setup, 3 portrait and one landscape, and I am normally running a number of RDP sessions, outlook, chrome, a development environment or two, so on and so forth. Most of these applications support full-screen views which mostly or completely hide the window borders, but on the Windows Desktop they take up a full monitor to do so. What I want to do is have 7 "desktops", "regions", call them what you will, each of which is, for the purposes of applications running in it, a "full screen" environment: I'm not tied to Windows Explorer for this, in case it helps - a different window manager that will support this functionality would be a perfectly acceptable answer.

• How do I make control-click in Opera open new tabs?

  Update: As of version 11.50, control-click opens the new tab in background, as desired. Yay! In Opera, as opposed to all other modern browsers I know, control-click does not open a new tab. Moreover, I couldn't find any good way to configure this behavior. The best available option seems to be this. However, it's so hacky that it won't work on HTTPS sites unless you enable user javascript there, which doesn't seem like a good idea. There also seem to be other proposed solutions, but none of them seem to work. I'd like this because my laptop has no middle mouse-button, and I'm a creature of habit. Do people have any ideas (for the latest version, 10.50)? I'd like ctrl-click to open a background tab, but I can do with foreground. Thank you!

  we are trying to get a MongoDB setup in EC2 going. I had a few questions - Should we turn on auth since the MongoDB endpoint will have a public VIP? Any big hit on perf with auth enabled? Best way to deploy a replicaset in EC2? Do I have to deploy all 3 nodes individually and configure them or can I use a tool to automate the deployment? We would like one of the secondaries to be located in a different DC than the primary. Ubuntu or RHEL? And what version? Thanks!

• Created a new zone in DNS manager - can't get site bindings to work in iis 7

  Firstly I would like to say that I am a noob when it comes to DNS, I am a web developer and I am trying to setup an intranet site for a charity. I have windows server 2008 and I installed both iis 7 and dns manager. In IIS I have this binding that works - Type: http:// IP Address: 192.168.1.9 Port: 80 Host name: My host name is empty and when I try to navigate to this website on the network, the http code is 200 and the page renders. Now if I try Host name of test.organization.intranet Internet explorer says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and the server response is aborted. In DNS manager I created a new forward lookup zone of organization.intranet I did this through the configure a dns server wizard and I created a host (A) with the same IP as the one being used in IIS. The full Host name is test.organization.intranet but it doesn't work. Maybe I am missing something obvious because it's not an area of IT that I know very well, but I am stuck for why I can't get it to work.

  I am trying to create a demo for a class of mine and I want to configure "fake" domain names on my laptop. A previous question "Can I specify a port in an entry in my /etc/hosts on OS X?" contained an answer indicating that to do it you must use /etc/hosts plus changes to the iptables "If OS X uses iptables you could point xyz.com to some ip in the hosts file like 157.166.226.25 and then: sudo iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -d 157.166.226.25 -j DNAT --to-destination 127.0.0.1:3000 " Since OS X doesn't use iptables, how do I do the equivalent using the tools available on OS X? (the original "asker" seemed to know how to do this, so it wasn't explained). Thanks in advance.

• iPhone VPN to iTunes Home Sharing [migrated]

  my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.) Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (can't find any information on this) FYI my router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28

  I have centOS 5.5 installed on virtual box it has no GUI so every thing is command based. I want to make a folder in centOS which i can share with my windows 7 host OS such that i can send files to and fro seamlessly. I am new to linux and i managed to install samba. I looked up some tips on net but i ended up getting confused and none of them worked. Can someone explain to me how i can do this in a straight forward way from how i can configure samba to how i can mount the folder such that it can be seen on the host operating system.   I'm trying to configure an alert on low space on disk in Windows Server 2003, I already followed this step by step tutorial of microsoft. I try to execute a bat file created by me, located on the home folder of the user I'm using. I seted to trigger when the free space is below 6 GB when the disk have lower free space than 6 GB, the "Sample data interval" is the default (5 seconds). The problem is that the alert isnt triggered. And another thing, the user that is seted for the alert isnt the root user, but It have administration privileges. Thanks in advance

  using the HAProxy, would it be possible to configure an overload protection, to limit the amount of requests sent to the backing http server(s) to a given rate (z.B 100 Request per second ). If the threshold is exceeded requests should be answered with a default response. I am interested in requests per second not connections per second as a connection can have many requests.   Possible Duplicate: Can IIS be configure to forward request to another web server? We are switching data centers (actually datac-center to EC2 to be specific) and some customers have not yet made DNS changes to point the domains to the new load balancers. We are thinking of leaving the existing servers up and just using a proxy server to forward the request to the new load balancer. Can anyone recommend a good proxy server for doing this I've got squid installed but it seems it's fairly easy to just have a fairly wide open proxy server and we don't want this. I want all requests coming in on port 80 to be sent to port 80 at a specific domain (elastic load balancer) the data center env is windows 2k3 and the EC2 env will all be linux but the ec2 env should be irrelevant

• VMWare Player disrupting Samba on Ubuntu 9.04 host?

  I've had Ubuntu 9.04 running on this computer for a while now. I just installed VMWare Player on my system and now when I try to browse the network in the Ubuntu host all the computers will show up one time only. If I try to browse again, no computers appear and even the workgroup is missing. I have to run: sudo /etc/init.d/vmware stop sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart to get the network visable again. As long as VMWare Player is stopped Samba seems fine. I guess it's got to do with the virtual adaptors that VMWare installs. Is there a way to get them both to work, or did I just miss-configure something?

• Disabling certain JBoss ports

  We are trying to configure JBoss 5.1.0 to be as lightweight and as secure as possible. One of the parts of this process is to identify and close any ports we do not need. Three ports that we have outstanding but don't believe we need are: 4457 - bisocket 4712 - JBossTS Recovery Manager 4713 - JBossTS Transaction Status Manager We don't think we need any of these features (but could be wrong). Bisocket seems to be a way for JMS clients behind a firewall to communicate with JBoss. We hardly use JMS now and when we do, it is very unlikely that we will need this firewall traversing ability. I am less sure about whether we need the two JBossTS ports - I am guessing these are used in a clustered environment - we aren't clustered. So my question is, how do we disable these ports (and associated processes where possible), or if we need these ports, why do we need to keep them open?

• 502 errors with apache mod_proxy hot standby (or equivalent)

  Anyone knows how to configure the hot standby (+H) mod_proxy feature so that the takeover occurs immediately (without even one user receiving a 502) error during a shutdown? We aren't looking for real load-balancing, we just want a secondary server to take over while we shutdown the primary. The problem is that whenever the primary goes down, I'm able to slip one invalid request resulting in a 502 HTTP error reaching the end user,before the secondary actually takes over. • Is it possible with Google searches to ban any and all results from a domain? [closed]

  Is it possible to configure Google somehow to permanently ban search results from domains that I know 100% are never, ever going to make me happy? Something cookie/session based maybe? E.g. I want to ban (permanently, forever and always) results from experts-exchange.com. Every time I click results that take me to their page I just want to scream. Update! Google has released a Chrome Extension to allow users to block individual site from Google search results! Personal Blocklist (by Google). (Since this question has been closed, I cannot answer it.)

• Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) subpixel font rendering crashes Xorg

  Hi everyone... I really don't know how to solve this on my own so I thought giving this site a chance. After upgrading to Lucid I ran into some problems. With some experimenting I came to a conclusion that if I enable subpixel smoothing on fonts the moment I start any other application not native to GTK+ (wine, openoffice, wxWidgets, ...) my X server crashes the same moment. At first this seemed like something went wrong during installation. To cut the long story short, after 3 clean installations and whole bunch of experimenting the same thing happens all over again. Strange thing is... if I configure any other font smoothing besides subpixel, everything works like it should. Any thoughs?

• Group Policy for Setting Passwords: Server 2003 Domain

  In my 2003 domain, I am being requested to set a password policy to require passwords to expire every 4 months, and also require users to change their password on their next login, due to a security issue. In my domain, my OU's are setup by location, then drilled down to city, then the users and computers are in separate sub-domains. My question is, how do I set this up for my domain? Will I need to set the policy up for loop back? Can I configure this for just a specific OU? Any suggestions on how to move forward? Any advise is much appreciated, and thanks in advance!
