• Improving MySQL Update Query Efficiency

  In our database tables we keep a number of counting columns to help reduce the number of simple lookup queries. For example, in our users table we have columns for the number of reviews written, photos uploaded, friends, followers, etc. To help make sure these stay in sync we have a script that runs periodically to check and update these counting columns. The problem is that now that our database has grown significantly the queries we have been using are taking forever to run since they are totally inefficient. I would appreciate someone with more MySQL knowledge than myself to recommend how we can improve it's efficiency: update users set photos=(select count(*) from photos where photos.status="A" AND photos.user_id=users.id) where users.status="A"; If this were a select statement I would just use a join but I'm not sure if that is possible with update.   I have a method which does some sync calls to a specific REST api, something like: WSRequestHolder url = WS.url("rest_api_url"); Promise<WS.Response> promisePerPage = url.get(); promisePerPage.getWrappedPromise().await(3000, TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS); WS.Response responsePerPage = promisePerPage.get(); ProductsWrapper productsWrapper = new Gson().fromJson(responsePerPage.getBody(), ProductsWrapper.class); As you notice, I put 3 seconds between calls so each request can be parsed in time and inserted in DB. All works great locally but after I deploy to cloud, all goes continuously, without any more waiting (3 seconds) between requests... Do you know why?

• Advice for building a browser-based audio mixer up to 32 tracks

  As a personal hobby I am looking to build an online audio mixer where I can upload individual instrument tracks, control individual volumes of each track, and export the mixed down version. I've been trying (and have come pretty close) with javascript. I really would like to stay away from flash if possible, but I'm really looking for suggestions for technologies to try. If anyone has any suggestions on languages that are good at stuff like this or libraries that I am missing, please let me know! • GIT Clones on Multiple Machines

  Here's my setup... Laptop (Mac) - git clone of svn repository Thumb drive - git clone of laptop git repository Server (Win Server 08) - git clone of thumb drive repository I'm having trouble keeping them in sync for some reason... If I make a change on the server, I'll do a "git pull " on the thumb drive to get the changes. Take the thumb drive to the laptop and do "git pull " on the laptop. From there, I can do "git svn dcommit" and everything goes up to the SVN repo with no problem. If I pull changes from SVN with "git svn rebase" and then do a pull onto the thumb drive and do a "git status" it says that I'm ## revisions ahead of the master/origin and I can't figure out why.

• How to run AWS sample JAVA code on an EC2

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it? I'm just trying to run the basic DynamoDB example that connects to the database and adds a new table and row

• git merge different repositories?

  I've been using SVN for all my projects. Sometimes project B is originating as a copy from project A. When project A has a generic change, I can use svn merge A within directory B and it will merge those changes. Now, if I wanted to use git. I don't like having all my projects in the same repository since I then have to clone everything and can't pick just one project like in SVN. But having one repository for each project, how do I go about doing the same like I did earlier with SVN? The question is: What's the best way to structure it if I want several subprojects that really all relates to one original project and to keep them in sync? And that I also want to be able to check them out separately

• strange characters at beginning of file

  there are strange characters at the beginning of a file I'm editing (using textmate..) I don't know when they appeared, they're invisible in textmate but my script that reads the file goes crazy.. this is the first few chars in the file (as seen with od command): 0000000 177377 000120 000105 000117 000120 000114 000105 000072 the first 2 shouldn't be there I think.. maybe they were caused by some strange dropbox sync? Or something else.. but they tend to reappear (I don't yet know when..) My question: what is that 177377 and a simple way to remove it in my ruby script? thanks

I've never touched anything CGI related and this does not appear to be a noob friendly area.   I'm currently starting a project which is going to be developed on a few different computer and I'm keeping in sync with bzr. In the project I'm using a couple of 3rd party libraries, like SDL. In the past I've just pushed a copy of the compiled library to my version control, but that usually seems to massively inflate the size of the branch and generally seem like a bad idea. Is that the normal practice, just pushing the required libraries, or is there a better way of added libraries to distributed version control like bzr or git? (I know on svn you can use svn:external to do something similar to this)

  I made a small backup application that simply creates an archive out specified files and folders. Now I need an online service to backup that online. Which service can i use that can be integrated into my app ? Options I considered: dropbox is ideal, but they have all but abandoned the desktop. skydrive has no api. I couldn't find any free reliable backup service that uses ftp . anything else ? it should provide 1-2 gb of free space and be reasonably reliable. • ASP.NET, Visual Studio and Subversion - how to integrate?

  I use AnkhSVN and Visual Studio 2005 and 2008. Now, one thing that bugs me is that Ankh does not really work with ASP.NET sites. I cannot add them properly to a repository and it won't detect changes, especially because the site is on a remote server accessed through Frontpage Extensions (File = Open Site). What are the alternatives? Does a better plug-in exist? Manually downloading the files through FTP and using TortoiseSVN or svn.exe is not really the level of integration I want :) I want to stay within the Visual Studio IDE when possible. Also, I do not control the remote Server, so I can not install anything on it, which means the whole change tracking/comparison to repository has to be done on my machine.

• How can I sqldump a huge database?

  SELECT count(*) from table gives me 3296869 rows. The table only contains 4 columns, storing dropped domains. I tried to dump the sql through: $backupFile = $dbname . date("Y-m-d-H-i-s") . '.gz'; $command = "mysqldump --opt -h $dbhost -u $dbuser -p $dbpass $dbname | gzip > $backupFile"; However, this just dumps an empty 20 KB gzipped file. My client is using shared hosting so the server specs and resource usage aren't top of the line. I'm not even given ssh access or access directly to the database so I have to make queries through PHP scripts I upload via FTP ( SFTP isn't an option, again ). Is there some way I can perhaps sequentially download portions of it, or pass an argument to mysqldump that will optimize it? I came across http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/000690.html which mentions the -q flag and tried that but it didn't seem to do anything differently.

• Live Mesh has screwed up my file permissions

  I got the bright idea of using Live Mesh to sync up my development directories between my laptop and desktop machines. It appears that the permission on any new files that are added through Live Mesh do not inherit permissions from the parent directory. Now I cannot overwrite the permissions on those files. I keep getting an "Access is Denied" error when attempting to do so, even if I am running Windows Explorer as administrator. I have two questions: How can I modify the file permissions to allow them to inherit again? Has anyone used Live Mesh to do this sort of thing? Or should I be using FolderShare instead?

  I have a set of methods that do some utility work over SQL connection, and until now these have been copied over from project to project. But as time goes on, project numbers have grown and I need to keep these methods in sync in case I find a bug or need to update it. I have managed to get it to the state that SQL access class is a partial class, one part is specific for project and contains wrappers for a specific database. The second part is the common one and contains methods that are used in all project-specific databases. The problem is that now I would have the "utility" class copied over 8 projects, with the same content, but in different namespaces. In C/C++ it would have been simple, because I would just have #included the contents of the file wherever needed. What should I do in C#?

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with...

The above process i have done, it will fine worked on 3.1.2 but it not working and installing on iphone device 3.1.3 version. How i troubleshoot the above problem.

  I have to copy a file from a windows 2008 server to one or more windows 2008 servers. I have accounts on the target machines with enough privileges to let me use powershell remoting and use wmi. The remote machines do not run ftp, ssh or similar file transfer mechanisms. I am not allowed to install software or run new services on the target server. I can run services on the source server. The file copy action must be initiated from the source server. i.e. I cannot manually logon to the target machines and initiate the copy - though an automated way to do this is acceptable. Is it possible to use WMI or PowerShell Remoting to push or pull the file from the source to the target ? Is it possible to invoke some sort of built in http client or invoke the BITS service/agent on the remote servers to pull files from the source server ? Other suggestions please.

• Syncronise Server Seconds with JS Clients

  I would like to drive a setTimeout loop based on the time of the server, seconds only. So when the seconds on the server is 30, some function is run on all clients. It is vital that they do not become totally out of sync with the server, as there will be a CRON job running on the server every, say, 45 seconds which is important to the system functioning correctly. It is ok if a client is out by a few seconds with the server, client do not need to be synced to each other. I am using Jquery library. Hope this makes sense!
