  • Android strange behavior with listview and custom cursor adapter

    - by Michael Little
I have a problem with a list view and a custom cursor adapter and I just can't seem to figure out what is wrong with my code. Basically, in my activity I call initalize() that does a bunch of stuff to handle getting the proper data and initializing the listview. On first run of the activity you can see from the images that one of the items is missing from the list. If I go to another activity and go back to this activity the item that was missing shows up. I believe it has something to do with setContentView(R.layout.parent). If I move that to my initialize() then the item never shows up even when returning from another activity. So, for some reason, returning from another activity bypasses setContentView(R.layout.parent) and everything works fine. I know it's impossible for me to bypass setContentView(R.layout.parent) so I need to figure out what the problem is. Also, I did not include the layout because it is nothing more then two textviews. Also, the images I have attached do not show that the missing item is the last one on the list. Custom Cursor Adapter: public class CustomCursorAdapter extends SimpleCursorAdapter { private Context context; private int layout; public CustomCursorAdapter (Context context, int layout, Cursor c, String[] from, int[] to) { super(context, layout, c, from, to); this.context = context; this.layout = layout; } public View newView(Context context, Cursor cursor, ViewGroup parent) { LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(context); final View view = inflater.inflate(layout, parent, false); return view; } @Override public void bindView(View v, Context context, Cursor c) { if (c.getColumnName(0).matches("section")){ int nameCol = c.getColumnIndex("section"); String section = c.getString(nameCol); TextView section_text = (TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.text1); if ((section.length() > 0)) { section_text.setText(section); } else { //so we don't have an empty spot section_text.setText(""); section_text.setVisibility(2); section_text.setHeight(1); } } else if (c.getColumnName(0).matches("code")) { int nameCol = c.getColumnIndex("code"); String mCode = c.getString(nameCol); TextView code_text = (TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.text1); } } if (c.getColumnName(1).matches("title")){ int nameCol = c.getColumnIndex("title"); String mTitle = c.getString(nameCol); TextView title_text = (TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.text2); if (title_text != null) { title_text.setText(mTitle); • Finding the distance between 2 points in Android using Cursor and the distanceTo() method

    - by LordSnoutimus
Hello, I am trying to calculate the distance between the first GPS point stored in a SQLite database and the last GPs point stored. My code so far is this: private double Distance() { SQLiteDatabase db1 = waypoints.getWritableDatabase(); Cursor cursor = db1.query(TABLE_NAME, FROM, null, null, null, null,ORDER_BY); Cursor cursor1 = db1.query(TABLE_NAME, FROM, null, null, null, null,ORDER_BY); Double lat = cursor.getDouble(2); Double lon = cursor.getDouble(1); cursor.moveToFirst(); cursor.moveToLast(); cursor.close(); distance = cursor.distanceTo(cursor1); } I realise I need to return a value but the error I am receiving is for the distanceTo method "The method distanceTo(Cursor) is undefined for the type Cursor" Thanks.

  • Modify tab indicator dynamically in Android

    - by ZelluX
My application needs to update tab indicator dynamically, I'm trying to do this by invoke TabSpec.setIndicator(), but it doesn't work. Here is my code: In onCreate method of TabActivity: tabHost = getTabHost(); TabSpec tabSpec = tabHost.newTabSpec("abc"); tabSpec.setIndicator("helloabc"); tabSpec.setContent(new MyViewFactory()); tabHost.addTab(tabSpec); Now I need to change tab indicator to another string, for example, "xyz" TabSpec tabSpec = MyTabActivity.getTabSpec(); tabSpec.setIndicator("xyz"); But it doesn't work. So I'd like to know how to change tab indicator after it is added to the tabhost? Many thanks.

  • Issues with ACTION_HEADSET_PLUG broadcast in Android

    - by Denis M
I've tried these phones: Moto Backflip 1.5, Nexus One 2.1 Basically I register BroadcastReceiver to get ACTION_HEADSET_PLUG broadcast and look on 3 extras that come in intent: state name microphone Here is the description from API: * state - 0 for unplugged, 1 for plugged. * name - Headset type, human readable string * microphone - 1 if headset has a microphone, 0 otherwise Issue #1: Broadcast comes when activity is started (not expected), when screen rotation happens (not expected) and when headset/headphones plugged/unplugged (expected). Issue #2: Backflip phone sends null for state + microphone, 'No Device' as name when headset/headphones unplugged, and sends null for state + microphone, 'Stereo HeadSet'/'Stereo HeadPhones' as name when headset/headphones plugged. Nexus even worse, it always sends null for state + microphone, 'Headset' as name when headset/headphones plugged or unplugged. Question: How it can be explained that API is broken so much on both 1.5 and 2.1 versions and different devices, manufactures?

  • android: two issues using Tablerow+TextView in Tablelayout

    - by Yang
    I am using Tablerow+TextView to make a simple view for blog posts and their replies. In each TableRow I put a TextView in. Now I have two issues: The text which is longer than the screen won't automatically wrap up to be multi-line. Is it by design of TableRow? I've already set tr_content.setSingleLine(false); [update] This has been addressed, I think I should change Fill_parent to be Wrap_content in textView.tr_author_time.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( LayoutParams.**WRAP_CONTENT**, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); The Table won't scroll like ListView. My rows are more than the screen size. I expect the table could be scrolled down for viewing just like ListView. Is that possible? Here is my code: TableLayout tl = (TableLayout) findViewById(R.id.article_content_table); TextView tr_title = new TextView(this); TextView tr_author_time = new TextView(this); TextView tr_content = new TextView(this); TableRow tr = new TableRow(this); for(int i = 0; i < BlogPost.size(); i++){ try{ // add the author, time tr = new TableRow(this); /////////////////add author+time row BlogPost article = mBlogPost.get(i); tr_author_time = new TextView(this); tr_author_time.setText(article.author+"("+ article.post_time+")"); tr_author_time.setTextColor(getResources().getColor(R.color.black)); tr_author_time.setGravity(0x03); tr_author_time.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); tr.addView(tr_author_time); tl.addView(tr,new TableLayout.LayoutParams( LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); ////////////////////// then add content row tr = new TableRow(this); tr_content = new TextView(this); tr_content.setText(article.content); tr_content.setSingleLine(false); tr_content.setGravity(0x03); tr_content.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); tr.addView(tr_content); tr.setBackgroundResource(R.color.white); tl.addView(tr,new TableLayout.LayoutParams( LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); }

  • Android: Replace a TabSpec Content

    - by Ally
I have a TabHost with a bunch of tabs each with a TabSpec. I'd like to change the content of one of the TabSpecs but I don't seem to be able to. I've read a few places that it's not possible to change the content of a TabSpec. Does anyone know why I can add/remove tabs but not change the content of them? And can anyone suggest a workaround for this problem?

  • Multiple overlay items in android

    - by Bostjan
I seem to be having a problem with using ItemizedOverlay and OveralyItems in it. I can get the first overlayItem to appear on the map but not any items after that. Code sample is on: http://www.anddev.org/multiple_overlay_items-t12171.html Quick overview here: public class Markers extends ItemizedOverlay { private Context ctx; private ArrayList<OverlayItem> mOverlays = new ArrayList<OverlayItem>(); public Markers(Drawable defaultMarker, Context cont) { super(boundCenterBottom(defaultMarker)); this.ctx = cont; // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub } @Override protected OverlayItem createItem(int i) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return mOverlays.get(i); } @Override public boolean onTap(GeoPoint p, MapView mapView) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return super.onTap(p, mapView); } @Override protected boolean onTap(int index) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub Toast.makeText(this.ctx, mOverlays.get(index).getTitle().toString()+", Latitude: "+mOverlays.get(index).getPoint().getLatitudeE6(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); return super.onTap(index); } @Override public int size() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return mOverlays.size(); } public void addOverlay(OverlayItem item) { mOverlays.add(item); setLastFocusedIndex(-1); populate(); } public void clear() { mOverlays.clear(); setLastFocusedIndex(-1); populate(); }} Markers usersMarker = new Markers(user, overview.this); GeoPoint p = new GeoPoint((int) (lat * 1E6),(int) (lon * 1E6)); OverlayItem item = new OverlayItem(p,userData[0],userData[3]); item.setMarker(this.user); usersMarker.addOverlay(item); The lines after the class are just samples of how it's used the first marker shows up on the map but if I add any more they don't show up? Is there a problem with the populate() method? I tried calling it manually after adding all markers but it still didn't help. Please, if you have any idea what could be wrong, say so.

  • Android: how to place a button at an x,y position over top of Canvas

    - by Ben Mc
Is it possible to place buttons at an X,Y position over the top of a Canvas? For example, on the opening screen of my game, I would like to place buttons for "Play Now", "Instructions", etc, right on top of the canvas. Right now, I'm looking at Touch locations on the Canvas and comparing them to various X,Y bounds. It works, but adding a button with a click listener would probably be much more efficient.

  • Android: Filtering a SimpleCursorAdapter ListView

    - by Diego Tori
Right now, I'm running into issues trying to implement a FilterQueryProvider in my custom SimpleCursorAdapter, since I'm unsure of what to do in the FilterQueryProvider's runQuery function. In other words, since the query that comprises my ListView basically gets the rowID, name, and a third column from my databases's table, I want to be able to filter the cursor based on the partial value of the name column. However, I am uncertain of whether I can do this directly from runQuery without expanding my DB class since I want to filter the existing cursor, or will I have to create a new query function in my DB class that partially searches my name column, and if so, how would I go about creating the query statement while using the CharSequence constraint argument in runQuery? I am also concerned about the performance issues associated with trying to run multiple queries based on partial text since the DB table in question has about 1300-1400 rows. In other words, would I run into a bottleneck trying to filter the cursor?

  • Android - Buffering in MediaPlayer

    - by Chris
I am using MediaPlayer to play a video in my app. The video takes a while to buffer and the videoview is blank for that time. Is there a way to start the buffering when the user is in the previous screen, so that when he comes to the video playing screen, the video is ready to play? Thanks Chris

  • trying to get the most accurate device location from GPS or Network in Android

    - by arc
I am trying to determine the most accurate location of a device, in the shortest time possible. I am storing the data as a geopoint, and have it displayed on a mapview. The last time I activated the GPS on my device and let it get a location lock, i was approx 80 miles from where I am now. I have a location manager setup and a location listener. If I do this, I get NULL. myLocOverlay = new MyLocationOverlay(this, mapView); GeoPoint test = myLocOverlay.getMyLocation(); but in the next couple of lines; myLocOverlay.enableMyLocation(); mapView.getOverlays().add(myLocOverlay); With this, the overlay on the map shows the current location. It is using the Network provider, but is also attempting to get a GPS fix (it can't as I am indoors and no where near the top floor). If I construct the geopoint like this; if(lm.getLastKnownLocation("gps") != null) { test = new GeoPoint( (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("gps").getLatitude() * 1E6), (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("gps").getLongitude() * 1E6)); } else { if(lm.getLastKnownLocation("network") != null) { test = new GeoPoint( (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("network").getLatitude() * 1E6), (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("network").getLongitude() * 1E6)); } //bad things } Then I get confusing results. If I disable the devices GPS provider then the code moves onto the Network Provider and gives me a fairly accurate result. If I enable the GPS provider, then the geopoint comes back as the last place I allowed the device to get a GPS lock. I want to avoid the above results, and so was looking at using; GeoPoint test = myLocOverlay.getMyLocation(); BUT as I said above, I just get NULL from that. Short of getting the geopoints from both GPS and Network and then comparing them, and disregarding the GPS result if it is say 1 mile out of the Network location - i'm a bit stuck. why doesn't getMyLocation() work, shouldnt that return the GeoPoint of what myLocOverlay is showing on the mapview?

  • Android GridView - update View based on position

    - by Chris
I have a GridView, using a custom adapter (myAdapter extends BaseAdapter), where each item in the grid holds an ImageButton. getView() is working fine. However, from elsewhere in my code, how can I update the image (setImageResource) for one particular item in the grid based on its position in the GridView? So far, I've added this to my adapter class: public void changeImage() { Log.d(TAG, "Image change"); this.ImageButton.setImageResource(R.drawable.newImage); } And would like to write something like this: mygridview.getItemIdAtPosition(20).changeImage(); (doesn't compile).

  • The Date type and the Android database

    - by cdonner
I understand that SQLite stores dates as long integers. When I read rows into a cursor using the standard method (i.e. using the query() method that reads data into a cursor), the result is a date string that includes the time. If I want a different format, I have to parse the string back into a date - possible, but a bit backwards. By using a ViewBinder (as suggested in this question), I can pretty much do anything I want, but the date is already a string at the time the method executes. The accepted answer to the above question also suggests that storing dates as longs would help avoid this problem. I don't want to do that, just in case I want to interpret my data with something else than this application. Maybe I want to expose it via a provider. Is there a way to handle this in the database adapter instead, i.e. controlling the date format that the cursor contains, so that I don't have to change the schema, and don't have to parse the default output back into a Date type?

  • Android: Ringer mode changed to silent doesn't stop the phone vibrating

    - by Flo
I'm trying to change the ringer mode of the phone to RINGER_MODE_SILENT when a call is incoming by using the following lines of code. AudioManager am = (AudioManager) this.getSystemService(Context.AUDIO_SERVICE); am.setRingerMode(AudioManager.RINGER_MODE_SILENT); While the phone stops ringing it continue to vibrate although the documentation of RINGER_MODE_SILENT says it should also stop vibrating. I'm using the SDK 1.6 UPDATE: As I didn't find a solution yet, I tried to deactivate the vibration settings manually. am.setVibrateSetting(AudioManager.VIBRATE_TYPE_RINGER, AudioManager.VIBRATE_SETTING_ONLY_SILENT ); But this also doesn't prevent the phone form vibrating when a call is incoming. Any ideas?

  • POJO's versus Cursors in Android

    - by Kilnr
I usually tend to define the model layer of my apps using POJO's, such as Article, Comment, etc. I was about to implement an AlphabetIndexer in the adapter of one of my ListViews. Right now this adapter accepts a Collection of Articles, which I normally get from my wrapper around an SQLiteDatabase. The signature of the AlphabetIndexer constructer is as follows: public AlphabetIndexer (Cursor cursor, int sortedColumnIndex, CharSequence alphabet) Since this doesn't accept a Collection or something similar, just a Cursor, it got me wondering: maybe I shouldn't be creating objects for my model, and just use the Cursors returned from the database? So the question is, I guess: what should I do, represent data with Collections of POJO's, or just work with Cursors throughout my app? Any input?

  • Android RestTemplate Ok on emulator but fails on real device

    - by Hossein
I'm using spring RestTemplate and it works perfect on emulator but if I run my app on real device I get HttpMessageNotWritableException ............ nested exception is java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe Here is some lines of my code(keep in mind my app works perfect on emulator) ............ LoggerUtil.logToFile(TAG, "url is [" + url + "]"); LoggerUtil.logToFile(TAG, "NetworkInfo - " + connectivityManager.getActiveNetworkInfo()); ResponseEntity<T> responseEntity = restTemplate.exchange(url, HttpMethod.POST, requestEntity, clazz); ............. I know my device's network works perfect because all other applications on my device are working and also using device browser I'm able to connect to my server so my server is available. My server is up and running and my device is able to connect to my server so why I get java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe ?!!!!!!! Before I call restTemplate.exchange() I log NetworkInfo and it looks ok -type: WIFI -status: CONNECTED/CONNECTED -isAvailable: true Thanks in advance. Update: It is really weird Even if I use HttpURLConnection, it works perfectly on emulator but on real device I get 400 Bad Request Here is my code HttpURLConnection con = null; try { String url = ....; LoggerUtil.logToFile(TAG, "url [" + url + "]" ); con = (HttpURLConnection) new URL(url).openConnection(); con.setRequestMethod("POST"); con.setRequestProperty("Connection", "Keep-Alive"); con.setDoInput(true); con.setDoOutput(true); con.setUseCaches(false); con.connect(); LoggerUtil.logToFile(TAG, "con.getResponseCode is " + con.getResponseCode()); LoggerUtil.logToFile(TAG, "con.getResponseMessage is " + con.getResponseMessage()); } catch(Throwable t){ LoggerUtil.logToFile(TAG, "*** failed [" + t + "]" ); } in log file I see con.getResponseCode is 400 con.getResponseMessage is Bad Request

  • Android: Dialog themed activity not visible

    - by Vincent
I have an activity which, when started, needs to check if the user is authenticated. If not, I need to display an interface to authenticate. I do this with another activity, which has a dialog theme, and I start it in onResume() with flags NO_HISTORY and EXCLUDE_FROM_RECENTS. Everything works fine when starting the application for the first time. But I have a feature that resets login after some time, if the user is not in an activity. When I test this, I start the applicatio, enter the password, then move back to home. Then when I enter the application again, the background darkens as if the dialog would show, but it doesn't. At this point, if I press the back button, the darkening from the background activity disappears for a second, then the dialog finally appears. I used logcat to investigate the case, and the activity lifecycle functions get called properly: //For the first start: onCreate background activity onStart background activity onResume background activity onPause background activity onCreate dialog onStart dialog onResume dialog //Enter password onPause dialog onResume background activity onStop dialog onDestroy dialog //navigating to homescreen onPause background activity onStop background activity //starting again onRestart background activity onStart background activity onResume background activity onPause background activity onCreate dialog onStart dialog onResume dialog //no dialog shown, only darkened background activity recieving no input //pressing back button onPause dialog onResume background activity onPause background activity onCreate NEW dialog onStart NEW dialog onResume NEW dialog onStop OLD dialog onDestroy OLD dialog //now the dialog is properly shown //entering password onPause NEW dialog onResume background activity onStop NEW dialog onDestroy NEW dialog Using the SINGLE_TOP flag makes no change. However, if I remove the dialog theme from the dialog activity, it IS shown after the restart. So far I didn't want to use a Dialog instead of an Activity, because I consider them problematic sometimes and less encapsulated and this part has to be quite secure. You may be able to convince me though.. Thank you in advance!
