• How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

  I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

  I read this question, but I'm more confused yet. In developer.ubuntu.com/showdown I read: "(2) run out of /opt" (I understand "run out" is not in /opt :O Am I wrong?) In https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AppReviewBoard/Review/Guidelines#Packaging I read: "our package should install most files in /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/" It's not clear for me if the app must be in the /opt or out /opt :$ Then, can I use the /usr?   I wish to know if there is a tool like this to replace windows explorer and similar in the work of managing files, specially those web-site structures that sometimes can get very big. I am asking it here because I sincerely do not know what terms to use in Google to find anything like it. It is like a diagram, but showing the tree directory structure and the contents of every folder at the same time, not just the one that is in focus.

  I have almost six years of experience in java. I have developed many projects which used frameworks like Struts, Spring, Hibernate, JQuery , DWR, Ajax etc. I have used these technologies in almost all the projects I have worked on. Projects were very simple mostly with crud based apps. My everyday tasks involves creating few screens, writing queries, testing etc. After all these years I feel like I have turned into an API programmer who just uses these above mentioned frameworks which is not giving me any satisfaction of being a programmer.   I'm currently working in a very small team of programmers (2-3) and I'm looking for advices/best practices on how to organise our work. We're all working on the same application using PHP. Today we're kind of all working on our way. Today situation: List item that have to be worked on by each dev 1/week. What has to be done is defined at a high functional level (ex: Build the search engine for this product..) Commit / merge our individual branches (git) every week before the next meeting No real dev rules, no code review No test written (aouutch) Problems faced: Code quality issue: discovering someone else code is sometime tough (inline, variable+function+class names, spaces, comments..) Changes in already existing classes (impact on someone else work) Responsibility of each dev unclear: after getting someone else code and discover something messy, should I make the change? Should he make the change? How to plan those things,... What I'm looking for: Basically I'm looking into structuring the way we develop things in order to avoid frustration and improve overall quality. How to define coding standards (naming convention, code rules...)? Do you you any validation script to make sure code is valid before committing? Do you think that defining an architect role in the team is needed? Someone that would actually define what has to be developed during the next phase. By defining interfaces or class descriptions that have to be written. (Does it make sense in such a small team?) Today we're losing time into understanding what others did or tried to do, we're also losing time in discussion like "you should have done it that way! Why is this class doing that and not that..? Shouldn't we have a embedded class rather that this set of data...". I'm looking into a work process, maybe with more defined responsibilities and process in order to improve our performance. • I've totally missed the point of distributed vcs [closed]

  I thought the major benefit of it was that each developers code gets stored within each others repository. My impression was that each developer has their working directory, their own repository, and then a copy of the other developers repository. Removing the need for central server, as you have as many backups as you have developers/repositories Turns out this is nto the case, and your code is only backed up (somewhere other than locally) when you push, the same as a commit in subversions. I am bit disappointed ... hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it handles merges better and there are less conflicts ?

  I need your help. I'm trying to install php_apc.dll into my php directory. So far this is what i've done: I copied php_apc.dll to c:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext. I've also restarted the server several times. But when i checked http://localhost/?phpinfo=1 There wasnt any evidence of APC Extension Installation. Please what i'm i doing wrong? • can I achieve my dreams without a degree? [closed]

  It's really giving me a lot stress as my parents saying me to join college but I don't want. I know I can learn all programming by self studying but they keep saying join college otherwise no one will give you job. I always think positive but sometimes I also start thinking like them (what if my life will be spoiled if I do not go to college) There are so much things on internet. I can learn c++, objective c, java, AI, html, php all through internet (at least I think that I can learn whole by self studying and I can give 10 hour/day easily for studying) and I will keep practicing and become a good programmer in 2 years and then try to do some job for experience so no need to waste 4 years just for studying things which I can learn in 2 years and no need to waste money on college because they teach physics, chemistry all in first 2 years and I only want to study comp. Science. But now again I am thinking negative that what will happen if I do not get degree and what will I do after learning programming if I don't get job? Please suggest what should I do? Should I join college? or self study? Can I achieve my dreams without a degree if I study hard and learn many things? I have full confidence that I can self teach myself better than they will teach in college. I will open my app company and many more. But maybe I am over confident because I don't know what happens in real world. How they treat a person without degree, etc. Anyone of you had gone through this condition? What did you do?

  I began to code different for 3 different projects, and it is alright, I have done it for 5 months, some php, some c, some matlab, but for some reason I got stucked... Usually when I pass through this I leave a while or go to sleep (and while sleeping I'm thinking on a solution to the problem I´m currently facing, the most important or urgent), and usually when I return (If I slept well) I have the solution and code comes easily, I don not know what you think, but I have like 10 consecutive days!   I have noticed a recent trend in requesting programmers who are rockstars. I get it, they're looking for someone who is really good at what they do. But why (pray) make the reference to a rockstar? Do these companies really want these traits as a real rockstar? Party all night and wake up to take care of quick business in the morning? Substance abuse, Narcissism with celebrity, Compensation well exceeding their management, Excellent at putting on a short-lived show, Entertainment instead of value, 1 hit (project) wonders or single-genre performers, Et cetera What is wrong with Senior or Principal Software Engineer who has an established and proven passion for the business? Rather do we mean quite the opposite, someone who: rolls up the sleeves and gets to work, takes appropriate direction and helps influence teams, programs in lessons' learned and proper practices, provides timely communication to the whole team, can code and understand multiple languages, understands the science and theory behind computation, Is there a trend to diversify the software engineering ranks? How many software rockstars can you hire before your band starts breaking up? Sure, there are lots of folks doing this stuff on their own, maybe even a rare few who do coding for show, but I wager the majority is for business. I don't see ads for rockstar accountants, or rockstar machinists, or rockstart CFOs. What makes the software programmer and their hiring departments lean towards this kind of job title?

• Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer?

  I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

• To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• How well do graduates from top universities perform and how does it feel compare to the rest of the world?

  I always have impressions to those who got admitted into top Universities like MIT, Standford... for studying Engineering. I don't actually know what they are doing in the University or what they will do, but I always feel they can perform higher level tasks with more complexities. I always think that they are good at create and applying mathematical model in real life and I tend to agree: If you can't apply math, it's your problems, not math. I am a junior software engineer on embedded devices. I am learning more on Linux kernel and low level stuffs. Even so, my will is not strong enough to pursue technical path forever, with a final purpose is to create something significant on my own. May I have a chance to get on their level if I keep learning through experience and self-study? In my opinion, Math is the must have requirement, since it seems that programs on those Universities are very Math oriented. Without very strong math skill, how can one perform good in science and researching beyond making regular business products?

• Why Firefox caching work will reset in version 3 but version 16 don't?

  I am developing a web application and have the app deployed into Tomcat server. Tested on IE and Firefox and are working fine. Meaning when I close the browser and reopen the app, the data will be reset. When deploy to Websphere, the data is reset only in IE but Firefox don't. Meaning Firefox will cache the old data. I did try to clear the cache in FF but still failed. I did a test in FF3 and FF16, FF3 will reset the value but FF16 doesn't, I am just so curious why this could happened? Now I don't know whether this is my code problem or is actually the FF caching problem. Any clue on this?

• How to create Button/Switch-Like Tile where you can step on it and change its value?

  If the player steps on a Button-Tile when its true, it becomes false. If the player steps on a Button-Tile when it is false, it becomes true. The problem is, when the player stands on (intersects) the Button-Tile, it will keep updating the condition. So, from true, it becomes false. Because its false and the player intersects it, it becomes true again. True-false-true-false and so on. I use ElapsedGameTime to make the updating process slower, and the player can have a chance to change the Button to true or false. However, it's not the solution I was looking for. Is there any other way to make it keep in False/True condition while the Player is standing on the Button tile?

• Combining position: relative with float in CSS

  I have always thought of position: relative and float: left as different tools that should be used separately, with some features that overlap. position should be used for positioning things relative to the viewport and float used for floating things within a container. Today I saw someone combining float: left and position: relative also using top: 10px, when they could have used margin top on the floated element and not added the position relative at all. It is obviously not wrong to do it in this way because it works, but what is the best practice? Should position relative be used on an element as well as float?

• Writing drivers for a printer?

  My goal is to be able to fax 20 page pdf documents for free. I've looked online, and there are some free fax services, but all of them have their limits. I do have an old fax machine, but the documents that need to be faxed are on the computer, and to print them would be far from free. Unfortunately, the only way to send a fax with the machine is by scanning it. What's strange is that it can scan to the computer and print from it, but it won't fax from it... :(. Is it possible to write something (preferably C#, but it's going to take some learning anyway) that will allow me to send a fax from the computer? I have very little software experience, and none in anything like this, so I have no idea where to start. If it is possible, where can I find all the information needed to write the program?
