  So Microsoft has stated that Internet Explorer 9, the first version of IE with wide support for HTML5 (including CSS3), will not be available on Windows XP. Given that Windows XP is still the dominant PC operating system, are web developers doomed to a prolonged future of supporting another inferior (in terms of supported features) yet stubborn browser. Does the fact that Microsoft will support XP until April of 2014 and will never support IE9 on XP mean that IE8 will be the dominant browser for the next three years?

• How do you QA and release software quickly with a large team?

  My work used to be a smaller team. We had less than 13 devs for a while. We are now growing rapidly, and are over 20 with plans to be over 30 in a few months. Our process for QA'ing and releasing each build is no longer working. We currently have everyone develop the new code, and stick it onto a staging environment. A few days before our weekly release, we would freeze the staging environment and QA everything. By our normal release time, everything was usually deemed acceptable and pushed out the door to the main site. We reached a point where our code got too big so we could no longer regress the entire site each week in QA. We were ok with that, we just made a list of everything important and only covered that and the new stuff. Now we are reaching a point where all the new stuff each week is becoming too big and too unstable. Our staging environment is really buggy week after week, and we are usually 1-2 hours behind the normal release time. As the team is growing further, we are going to drown with this same process. We are re-evaluating everything, and I personally am looking for suggestions / success stories. Many companies have been where before and progressed beyond, we need to do the same

• What are some techniques I can use to refactor Object Oriented code into Functional code?

  I've spent about 20-40 hours developing part of a game using JavaScript and HTML5 canvas. When I started I had no idea what I was doing. So it started as a proof of concept and is coming along nicely now, but it has no automated tests. The game is starting to become complex enough that it could benefit from some automated testing, but it seems tough to do because the code depends on mutating global state. I'd like to refactor the whole thing using Underscore.js, a functional programming library for JavaScript. Part of me thinks I should just start from scratch using a Functional Programming style and testing. But, I think refactoring the imperative code into declarative code might be a better learning experience and a safer way to get to my current state of functionality. Problem is, I know what I want my code to look like in the end, but I don't know how to turn my current code into it. I'm hoping some people here could give me some tips a la the Refactoring book and Working Effectively With Legacy Code. For example, as a first step I'm thinking about "banning" global state. Take every function that uses a global variable and pass it in as a parameter instead. Next step may be to "ban" mutation, and to always return a new object. Any advice would be appreciated. I've never taken OO code and refactored it into Functional code before.

• Handle all authentication logic in database or code?

  We're starting a new(ish) project at work that has been handed off to me. A lot of the database sided stuff has been fleshed out, including some stored procedures. One of the stored procedures, for example, handles creation of a new user. All of the data is validated in the stored procedure (for example, password must be at least 8 characters long, must contain numbers, etc) and other things, such as hashing the password, is done in the database as well. Is it normal/right for everything to be handled in the stored procedure instead of the application itself? It's nice that any application can use the stored procedure and have the same validation, but the application should have a standard framework/API function that solves the same problem. I also feel like it takes away the data from the application and is going to be harder to maintain/add new features to.

  I have a WinXP based laptop with pretty basic hardware configuration by today's standards. I am planning to upgrade to a WinXP based laptop with a lot better hardware. The problem: My current laptop has truck loads of software like cygwin, perl, ruby etc. Installing each software manually is going to be pretty cumbersome. Not to mention customizing the packages.   Doing some reading on Stack Overflow, I've found a lot of information suggesting that proper organization of a file system is crucial to a well-written web app. One of the key pieces of evidence is high-frequency references to "separation of concerns" in questions related to keeping programs organized. Now, I've found some information on organizing file systems (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard) from 2004. It raises only two concerns: first, the standard's a bit dated, so I believe it may be possible to do better given the changes in technology over the past 8 years; second, and most important, my application is very small compared to an entire Linux distro. I think that the file system should be organized very differently because of that. Here's what I'm looking at, currently: /scripts, /databases, /www -> /dev, /production -> login, router, admin pages, /sites -> content types, static pages /modules, /includes, /css, /media -> /module-specific-media

• Is it worth moving from Microsoft tech to Linux, NodeJS & other open source frameworks to save money for a start-up?

  I am currently getting involved in a startup, I am the only developer involved at the moment, and the other guys are leaving all the tech decisions up to me at the moment. For my day job I work at a software house that uses Microsoft tech on a day to day basis, we utilise .NET, SqlServer, Windows Server etc. However, I realise that as a startup we need to keep costs down, and after having a brief look at the cost of hosting for Windows I was shocked to see some of the prices for a dedicated server. The cheapest I found was £100 a month. Also if the business needs to scale in the future and we end up needing multiple servers, we could end up shelling out £10's of £000's a year in SQL Server / Windows Server licenses etc. I then had a quick look at the price of Linux hosting for a dedicated server and saw the price was waaaaaay lower than windows hosting. One place was offering a machine with 2 cores for less than £20 a month. This got me thinking maybe the way to go is open source on Linux. As I write a lot of Javascript at work (I'm working on a single page backbone app at the moment), I thought maybe NodeJS and a web framework like Express would be cool to use. I then thought that instead of using SQL why not use an open source NoSQL database like MongoDB, which has great support on NodeJS? My only concern is that some of the work the application is going to do is going to be dynamically building images and various other image related stuff, i.e. stuff that is quite CPU heavy - so I'm thinking of maybe writing anything CPU heavy in C++ and consuming it as a module in Node. That's the background - but basically is Linux a good match for: Hosting a NodeJS/Express site? Compiling C++ node modules? Using a NoSQL DB like MongoDB? And is it a good idea to move to these unfamiliar technologies to save money?

• In which fields does quality of the software product matter as much as the completion time?

  Someone told me that if the software product meets clients expectations, it is good quality. But I've worked with Interaction Designers (the same kind of people who made Gmail's interface and usability so cool!), and I've loved working with them because even though they came up with hundreds of changes in requirements, and emphasised on many many subtle details, when the software was complete, I could look at the product and say WOW! The current place I work, the only thing that matters is completing the project on time. As long as it works and as long as the client says it's ok, nobody bothers to improve it. I'm not talking about gold-plating, but I believe that for a programmer to enjoy his (well, maybe her too ;) ) job, they should be able to proudly say that "Hey, I made that software" and that comes only when the product is of good quality. Apart from your opinions on this, I'd also like to know which fields (Eg. Aerospace, Finance etc.) could I find companies (or you could mention the company name) where the quality of a product is as important as completing the project on time?

• How to simulate a USB plug?

  I have an app that implements some automations when an USB key is plugged. While developing, I have to test it in a specific environment (derivative from Debian Squeeze). The app subscribe to HAL events via DBUS. The problem is: my desk is on the third floor while my test machines are in the basement. I would really like to have a way to simulate a USB plug. usbip does not work on Ubuntu. I can't manage to use the g_mass_storage module on Ubuntu (I lack the dummy_hcd module) and in Debian. Maybe it is possible to simulate a dbus call? My work station is on Ubuntu 12.04.

• Which programming language should I choose I want to build this website ...? [closed]

  Assuming that I will start with just phot sharing website. Every user can add comments to any photo. After that the site will contain news (general news), the admin can add any news and the moderators as well while the users can also add comments on this news. The website will aslo provide photos uploader, so every user will have up to 20 MB ti upload any photos they want. Other users can see these photos or can not depending on the option that the main user chose(if he wants to publish his photos or not). The site should have a small type of forum which provide the ability for admin to ad categories and for user to add topics and replies for each topic in these categoris. These are the things that I can think of now, but the website will add other features as well and services later on. Can you tell me now which programming language can help me to do all that? I need a programming language that provdies the follwing: 1- speed load for pages of the site. 2- easy to add more functions quickly and easy to edit code for any reason. 3- Secure 4- fast in displaying infromation from database.

• Stop myself from over-complicating applications

  Recently I worked on a fairly large project involving C# and MVVM. This application had around 160 projects in the solutions each seprarated into their own layers. As I have been working on this application for almost a year, building it from scratch as part of a team, I am now coming off that project and onto smaller more trivial projects. As I was beginning to develop a small in-house tool I found myself trying to mimic the larger applications structure and layering but in the end I just had a simple application with several DLLs which I know I wouldn't have done if I had not worked on that larger application before. I am just wondering if there are any techniques I can utilise to stop myself from turning a "code-behind" style trivial application into a full blown MVVM application? Or should I continue developing as I am and try to keep the unnecessary fluff out of the project?

  I started programming lately(pre-final year of a CS degree) and now feel like there's a sea of uncovered treasure for me out there. So, I decided to cover as much as is possible before I look out for a job after graduation. So, I started to read books (The C++ Programming Language, Introduction to Algorithms, Cracking the Coding Interview, Programming Pearls,etc ) participate in StackExchange sites, solving problems (InterviewStreet and ProjectEuler), coding for open source, chatting to fellow programmers/mentors and try to learn more and more. Good,then what's the problem?? The problem is I am trying to do many things, but I am doubtful that I am still utilizing my time properly. I am reading many books and sometimes I just leave a book halfway (jumping from one book to another), sometimes I spend way too much time on chatting and also in getting lost somewhere in the huge internet world, and lastly the wasteful burden of attending classes (I don't think my teachers know good enough or I prefer learning on my own) May be some of you had similar situation. • Abandoment to blame for the last JavaScript file not always being loaded?

  I have a code snippet for an app that users are loading as a 3rd party script on their site. The general sequence is as follows: Site loads http://www.example.com/foo.js foo.js does stuff 1 to 2 seconds later, foo.js loads bar.js Now in a perfect world, I'd want to see matching counts for the calls to foo.js and bar.js. However, bar.js loads only about 94% of the time. I'm wondering how much of this discrepancy might be attributable to site abandonment given the fact that bar.js is delayed by 1 or 2 seconds. I posted here instead of StackOverflow since I think it's more a question about what would be typical time on page when users abandon the page.

In this session Kraig Brockschmidt cover a wide array of dos and don’ts for implementing live tiles.  I was actually worried whether I would get much out of this session when Kraig started it off with the fact that his background is in HTML5 based apps which I have little interest in, but the subject almost didn’t come up during his talk.  It focused on things like making sure you have all the right size graphics and implementing all of the tile event handlers.  The session went on to discuss the message format for push notification and implementing lock screen notification and badges.   I still try to make it possible to run my app with root priveleges. Therefore I created two policies to run the application via pkexec (one for /usr/bin and one for /opt/extras... ) and added them to the setup.py: data_files=[('/usr/share/polkit-1/actions', ['data/com.ubuntu.pkexec.armorforge.policy']), ('/usr/share/polkit-1/actions', ['data/com.ubuntu.extras.pkexec.armorforge.policy']), ('/usr/bin/', ['data/armorforge-pkexec'])] ) additionally I added a startscript which uses pkexec for starting the application. It distinguishes between the two places and is used in the Exec-Statement of the desktopfile: #!/bin/sh if [ -f /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/armorforge/bin/armorforge ]; then pkexec "/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/armorforge/bin/armorforge" "$@" else pkexec `which armorforge` "$@" fi If I simply do a quickly package everything will work right. But if I package with extras option: quickly package --extras the Exec-statement will be exchanged. My application is for communicating with apparmor which currently has no dbus interface. Else I need to write into /etc/apparmor.d-folder.   I am developing a forum for a research project, i am using Vanilla forum (though i am not tied to this yet). Another feature of this site will be a personal journal/diary/blog. Only the user and administrators will have access to the journal. The journal does not need any advanced features. Does anybody have any suggestions on software/script that could easily be integrated with Vanilla forum for this purpose? My first thought was using Wordpress but it is a bit to complex to adminstrate as the site is meant to be simple. And i dont really see how it can be intregrated easily the way i want it.

• How can I install an old version of libc on 12.04 and is it safe to do so?

  I am building an application on 12.04 and I need to run it on an embedded device. The device has libc-2.8.90.so on it and my dev machine has libc-2.15.so on it. I would like to install libc-2.8.90 onto my dev machine and attempt to link it to my application. I have searched at the Ubuntu software centre for libc-2.8.90 but I cannot find anything resembling it. Is there a way to install this on my machine from command line?? Also will my system be safe having 2 installed versions of libc at the same time? Can it lead to any instability?
