  • Why is "int + string" possible in statically-typed C# but not in dynamically-typed Python?

    While studying C# I found it really strange, that dynamically typed Python will rise an error in the following code: i = 5 print i + " " whereas statically typed C# will normally proceed the similar code: int i = 5; Console.Write(i + " "); I would expect other way around (in python I would be able to do this without any casting, but C# would require me to cast int to string or string to int). Just to highlight, I am not asking what language is better, I am curious what was the reason behind implementing the language this way.

  • Looking for a Python IDE with good support for libraries (Twisted).

    I'm looking for a Python IDE that can help me easily locate and manage and use the libraries on my system (Ubuntu). Specifically Twisted. Code completion is important including the symbols I import. (I've so far had a look at PyDev as well as OpenKomodo, but while both offer code completion for default Python concepts, I wasn't able to get either to import Twisted into my project and was thus getting reference errors.) Usual disclaimer: I don't like EMACS or vi, please, nothing regarding those.

    I am trying to find out the version of Visual Study that is used to compile the python on my computer It says Python 2.6.2 (r262:71605, Apr 14 2009, 22:40:02) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] on win32 What I do not understand is that MSC V.1500. Does it mean it is compiled with 2005? I cannot find this information on `python.org' neither. Any help is appreciated!

    I can implement the error function, erf, myself, but I'd prefer not to. Is there a python package with no external dependencies that contains an implementation of this function? I have found http://pylab.sourceforge.net/packages/included_functions.htmlthis but this seems to be part of some much larger package (and it's not even clear which one!). I'm sorry if this is a naive question - I'm totally new to Python.

    I'm using urlfetch from google app engine, but it keeps going to the redirected final page even though I use: result = urlfetch.fetch(classUrl, payload=None, method=urlfetch.GET, headers={}, allow_truncated=False, follow_redirects=False) E.g. if classUrl was a searched term in Google (https://www.google.com/search?q=setInstanceFollowRedirects()+python&oq=setInstanceFollowRedirects()+python&sugexp=chrome,mod=0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) it would redirect me to www.google.com How do I stop this redirection? Thanks!

  • Would Python make a good substitute for the Windows command-line/batch scripts?

    I've got some experience with Bash, which I don't mind, but now that I'm doing a lot of Windows development I'm needing to do basic stuff/write basic scripts using the Windows command-line language. For some reason said language really irritates me, so I was considering learning Python and using that instead. Is Python suitable for such things? Moving files around, creating scripts to do things like unzipping a backup and restoring a SQL database, etc.

  • Building nginx 1.0.4 on Amazon EC2 micro - perl and python problems

    I'd like to run nginx as a reverse proxy with apache2 on my EC2 micro instance. yum install nginx gives me nginx-0.8.53-1.2.amzn1.x86_64.rpm The current nginx is 1.0.4 I found and followed this guide: http://kdn2.info/2011/05/install-nginx-on-amazon-ec2/ It works fine up to and including "make".   • Installing Mod-wsgi 3.3 for apache 2.2 and python 3.2

    I am attempting to install Mod-wsgi 3.3 on an ubuntu 11.10 desktop edition with apache 2.2 and python 3.2 I downloaded the source tarball and extracted it. I configured it using the --with-python=/usr/bin/python3 option to configure. This is the only copy of python3 that I have installed. I then issued the commands make and sudo make install. I attempted to restart apache using sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart and get the following error message: apache2: Syntax error on line 203 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/wsgi.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules /mod_wsgi.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_wsgi.so: undefined symbol: PyCObject_FromVoidPtr Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. ...fail! I have read on another question that mod-python can present problems however it was never installed. I saw that the directive WSGIPythonHome can be used to point to the correct python version and created a directory /usr/bin/apache2-python/ with a link named python and python3(the name I passed to the configure script) to /usr/bin/python3 This results in the same error. So I'm pretty sure it's using the correct version of python. I am now at a loss.   • I'm trying to install psycopg2 onto Mac OS 10.6.3; it claims it can't find "stdarg.h" but I can see

    I'm desperately trying to successfully install psycopg2 but keep running into errors. The latest one seems to involve it not being to find "stdarg.h" (see code below). However I can see with my own eyes that a file called stdarg.h exists at /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/usr/include/stdarg.h (where it claims it can't find anything) so I've no idea what to do about it. I'm running Mac OS 10.6.3 and within the last few days I've made sure I have all the latest OS developer tools.   • Installing Sphinx on App Engine - possible?

    Following up on my last year's question on documentation, I now want to get started and try out Python-based Sphinx for putting together the developer documentation for a PHP CMS I've been working on. Instead of setting up Python locally on my workstation, I would like to run it on a publicly accessible web server from the start. All the web hosting packages I have access to run on the LAMP stack, and I'm reluctant to buy Python-based hosting. I am very interested in the Google App Engine, the free quotas they provide will do for me a hundred times over, and even if not, their pricing looks very reasonable. Now I have zero knowledge of Python - getting Sphinx to work would be my first contact with it - and very little time. As far as I understand, the platform and python libraries the App Engine provides are very compatible to a standard Python library but not identical. So my question is: Can Sphinx run on App Engine at all? Is installing Sphinx on the App Engine as straightforward as if I would install it on top of a normal Python installation? Or will the App Engine's environment require tweaking of the source code that I can't perform in reasonable time with my current level of Python? Should I be installing Sphinx on a local server and a "normal" Python stack instead first? Does anybody know any helpful How-to's, tutorials or other resources for this?

    If you are required to store 100,000 complex structures that are accessed frequently by 100,000 users, which of the following solutions would you use and why? Memcached, In-code python objects, Redis, or a relational database (MySQL). With the little knowledge that I have I think that memcached and In-code python object will not store permanent persistent data. so they don't qualify as the right answer for such a problem. And for complex data structures its best to use Redis. Please correct me if I am wrong.
