• How do I elevate privileges when running appcmd from a nant task?

  We are using a Windows 7 box as build server. As part of our continuous integration process I would like to stop and start an IIS 7 website. I have tried doing this from the command line using appcmd: appcmd start site "my website" However, this only works if I start the console window by choosing "Run as Administrator", so it won't work out-of-the-box from NAnt etc. How do I script appcmd to be run with elevated privileges (or am I going about this in the wrong way)?   I need to add static route on Mac OS. I found good description here Permanent Static Route Mac OS X 10.4.0 and followed the Roark Holz's (roarkh) solution. Now my problem: sometimes this solution works, sometimes does not. • The very bare minimum of latex to compile documents

  I'm creating a relatively small console program which will be used by some other people as well. As part of its output it will be creating a tex file which will contain some two tables, a few rows of text and one plot. Not, my program is pretty small - under a Mb. The problem is I can't count on my users to have latex installed, so I'd like to include the very bare minimum required files to create it (pdf). What would be a good place to start searching on that topic, or even better, does anyone know what I would need to include with it to accomplish that ? I remember my last latex install being pretty ... well, gigantic. Kind regards !

• Terminal mail delivery delay in Mac OS X

  I'm using mail from the Mac OS X terminal to send the results of a database query to me via email. Most of the time it works, but sometimes there is a long delay before the mail arrives (often when another similar script is run). It looks like there is some kind of send queue, but I can't find any documentation mentioning this. Is there something I need to do to flush mail from the terminal? UPDATE: Sometimes delivery doesn't even seem to happen, though I get no errors at the console. Very weird.

• How to add addtional disks to a Windows 2008 KVM based Guest?

  I have a Win 2008 KVM based guest VM running on a Ubuntu 10 host. It is a raw image of 22G. I want to add a "data" drive which would show up as "D:\" drive on the guest. I first created a raw image using: qemu-img create -f raw ~/vmdisk2.img 50G Then, tried attaching it using virsh attach-disk. When that did not work, I tried editing the xml file of the VM directly. Both did not seem to work. I would greatly appreciate any help on how to do this and what the best practice is. I want to keep the base image small, so that I can clone it (hopefully) and then attach necessary storage based on the application at hand.   I want to install VMware Workstation in Windows and Linux host silently. In Windows host, I can use the silent installation features of the Microsoft Windows Installer. But I didn't find a way to perform silent install/uninstall in Linux host. I had to click "I agree" or "Close" to make the installation continue or complete. If there has a Workstation installed, I can use vmware-installer -i path to installation file" --console --required to update the Workstation to a different version. But this command only exists after a Workstation has been installed.

• Compiling/executing Java on Sublime Text 2 works fine except that it cannot read user input

  I am a student learning Java and I want to compile and run some simple Java on ST2. Also Eclipse is very slow on my laptop. Here is my JavaC.sublime-build file so far: { "cmd": ["sublimejavaexec.bat", "$file"], "file_regex": "^(...*?):([0-9]*):?([0-9]*)", "selector": "source.java" } So far it can run code that does not require user input. However when I have something that uses the Java input scanner it either skips through or generates an error. Can anyone suggest a solution such as a plug-in or if ST2 actually has this kind of feature on its console? Thanks.

• Alternatives to Citrix GoToAssist ?

  Citrix GoToAssist is a really nifty little web application for customer support that allows you to take control of someones OSX, or Windows machine. Essentially, it works likes this: You log in to your management console You get a code You give them a code, and a website (fastsupport.com) They go there and enter in the code They accept the browser applet which installs a program on their computer You have control of their desktop You can see their desktop, configure applications, etc. They can also see when you disconnect. It is really rather nifty, but it doesn't support Linux and it is rather expensive (660$ a year). Does anyone know of any alternatives to this? I'm looking for a solution as simple on the user as this one, that doesn't require firewall configuration or setting up ssh/vnc/rdesktop etc.

• Virtualbox and getting the Locked VT-x Error when trying to use more than 1 processor on the session

  I have installed the latest version of virtualbox onto my Hewlett Pakard (h8-1170uk) I have a intel i7 2600 cpu and 8 gb of ram I can get virtual box to create several sessions of different operating systems at the same time, but whenever i try to get 1 session to open up using more than 1 processor option select ( i wanted one of my session access to 2 processors ) i keep getting this error message VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have search many times and cannot find a option to correct this. I have check my BIOS and there are no options about VT-x or Virtualisation or anything. Am i doing something wrong ? Why does Virtualbox run fine when just using the 1 processor option ?

• Windows Server 2003 guest on Xen frequently stops responding

  I'm running a Windows Server 2003 guest instance in Xen 3.x. This DomU runs fine for a day or two, then stops responding — I don't get any network response, and I can no longer connect to Xen's VNC console for this DomU. xm list shows this: Name ID Mem VCPUs State Time(s) Domain-0 0 6508 8 r----- 1161159.4 [A working Linux DomU] 1 512 1 -b---- 68711.1 [The hung Windows DomU] 5 512 1 ------ 67234.2 [Another working Linux DomU] 3 512 1 -b---- 163036.4 (What does the ------ mean? The xm manual explains what each of the six states mean, but not what no-state means.) If I xm destroy and then xm create the Windows DomU again, it boots right back up (with the Windows alert The previous system shutdown at [...] was unexpected.), and then stops responding after another day or two. I checked /var/log/xen/*.log, but no log messages are generated at the time the server stops responding. How should I proceed in troubleshooting this?

• How can I upgrade bash to >= 4.1 on CentOS 5.5?

  I have a CentOS 5.5 VPS server. I want to use RVM. According to the console output when I run the RVM installer, RVM requires bash = 4.1. I just ran yum update. My bash version is now 3.2.25. If I understand how yum works, that means that 3.2.25 is sort of the version of bash that "belongs with" my CentOS version, and it's the latest version I can get using yum. (Right? Or am I wrong about this?) How can I get that on my CentOS 5.5 system? To clarify, I understand that I can just download the source and install, but I'm hesitant to break out of yum's version management system. Is there a way to upgrade bash without disrupting yum?

• How to start Internet Explorer 8 without any bars

  Hi. At work I use LogMeIn to do remote assistance for our customers. The only thing which is bugging me is that you can switch to fullscreen mode but it doesn't offer to open the remote session in a new window without address bar, bookmarks bar and stuff. So I'm looking for a way to open the LogMeIn Tech Console in a new browser window without any bars. Fullscreen mode is nice but not usable when working with other applications besides the remote session. The Internet Explorer Kiosk mode also doesn't fit my needs. I created a bookmarklet with works quite nice but having a link directly on my desktop would be perfect. Does anyone have a hint on that? I use IE8 on Windows XP SP3. Thx in advance Dennis

• How to stop nginx on Mac OS X

  I've installed nginx server on my Mac from MacPorts: sudo port install nginx. Then I followed the recommendation from the port installation console and created the launchd startup item for nginx, then started the server. It works fine (after I renamed nginx.conf.example to nginx.conf and renamed mime.types.example to mime.types), but I couldn't stop it... I tried sudo nginx -s stop - this doesn't stop the server, I can still see "Welcome to nginx!" page in my browser on http://localhost/, also I still see master and worker processes of nginx with ps -e | grep nginx. What is the best way to start/stop nginx on Mac? BTW, I've added "daemon off;" into nginx.conf - as recommended by various resources. Thank you.

Servers My questions are, Since I'm using both GE 0/0 and GE 0/1 ports to connect to switch, how can I connect my Linux Firewall (Port fxp1) to my Cisco Router? I know the USB and Console port are for configuration, can I use AUX port to connect my firewall (if so is it consider a right way)? • "Disk Not Found" Error when trying to install iso image of CentOs on ESXI using VSphere

  When trying to install CentOs setup as an iso image on datastore, i get an error : "Disk Not Found". I am using ESXi 4.1 as host VM. Is there a way to attach DVD/CD as iso image ? I tried "Connect at Power on" Checked and Connect CD/DVD on the VSphere Console, but i still am unable ot get the iso image recognized as a DVD mounted image: Solved: if i look at the image size, it was 11 MB, so it WAS a boot iso, but nithing else, if we compare it with other boot images with complete iso's therein lies the solution. • Can I autologin a specific user on a specific VT, but still have other login shells running?

  I'm running a linux system with Ubuntu Karmic on it, and I use it to run a webcam and a program that continuously outputs on the console. Is there any way I can force a user to login on VT2, and then switch VTs to VT2, but still have other login consoles running so I can hook a keyboard up to it and CTRL-ALT-F# to get to another terminal? I have a feeling this needs to go in my rc.local file, but nothing in the login manpage seems to suggest it can do what I want it to do. If there is no way to login a user on the vt, launching the program directly on a specific VT will work as well, since the user's shell in /etc/passwd is set to the program anyway.

• Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts?   I am attempting to configure a new CISCO Aironet 1200 Series Access Point to have a fixed IP. I have been searching online and I have come to the conclusion that the default IP address of this device is 10.0.0.1. These are the steps I have taken: My machine is plugged directly into the Ethernet port (not the Console port) of the AP. My Ethernet adapter is set to 10.0.0.2. I have reset the AP by holding the Mode button while powering up the device. The issue remains that I can not access 10.0.0.1 through the web, nor can I ping that address.

• Unused Index Entries: What causes them?

  I was running chkdsk on one of our servers and it fixed 800 unused index entries (minor inconsistencies) on the drive. I also see these on lab machines running Deep Freeze, where most drive changes are supposed to be prevented although I'm not sure of the mechanism through which it does this. The thing that got me more curious than usual is that this server does very little. Very little activity, it remotely serves out a web app with little use so it's rarely ever touched at the console...so what is it on NTFS drives that causes this? It seems to be treated as if it's nothing, but should this be happening on a barely used filesystem? Is it a sign of corruption? I would think it's something if a disk repair utility sees fit to report it and repair it. Maybe this is more curiosity while doing some routine maintenance on servers, but I'd like to know what this is doing and why it happens, if anyone can give insight on this phenomena.

• FTP Logs in IIS 7.5

  I know this is weird, but the thruth is that I can't find the FTP logs in one IIS 7.5 Server. In the IIS Management Console, I've gone to the server, click on FTP Logging that appears inside FTP group (with other options like FTP Messages and FTP Request filtering). Seems that the configured folder for logs is: C:\InetPubFolder\logs\LogFiles If I go there, I can find a lot of folders with the structure W3SVC#, where # it's a number. They all contain logs, but they are HTTP logs, plenty of GET and POST verbs. Am I missing something? The server contains a lot of domains and It's hard to find.

• Managing service passwords with Puppet

  I'm setting up my Bacula configuration in Puppet. One thing I want to do is ensure that each password field is different. My current thought is to hash the hostname with a secret value that would ensure each file daemon has a unique password and that password can be written to both the director configuration and the file server. I definitely don't want to use one universal password as that would permit anybody who might compromise one machine to get access to any machine through Bacula. Is there another way to do this other than using a hash function to generate the passwords? Clarification: This is NOT about user accounts for services. This is about the authentication tokens (to use another term) in the client / server files. • How can I switch Linux running OS from disk to running from RAM without restarting?

  Is it possible to switch to running Linux from RAM or RAM disk after starting starting initially from disk? eg. You need to make an image of your hard disk, FTP it to a remote location, some time later you want the image back, so you start the system from disk as usual, restore the image you FTP'd from the remote location back into place. More like a CloneZilla backup and restore, without booting the server from CD or USB disk, but starting from the normal hard disk? Notes on environment I should have mentioned it earlier. It is a remotely hosted VM where I cannot boot into a recovery console mode or do a netinstall. It will always boot onto the same disk. Which means that if there is some serious corruption I can't repair it offline, which is why being able to ftp a previously saved backup into place is so important

• Convert SWF/FLA back to PDF [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I convert SWF into a PDF? I have a number of graphics and text only SWF and FLA files that I'd like to convert to PDF preserving the text and formatting. Printing to PDF from Flash Player seems to flatten everything into an image without preserving the text. I've got a large number of those files, so it would be quite nice to have a automatable/console utility to do the job. Appreciate any help or pointers. Thanks! EDIT: It seems like most SWF files were created with pdf2swf, so I'm hoping there is a similar tool for doing a reverse conversion.

  I want create an Launch Config/Auto Scaling Group to build instances inside an VPC with two subnets ("frontend" and "backend") I need that this instances have two ifaces. One in "frontend" subnet and one in "backend" subnet. I can't see how do that.
