  • Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

    I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server. I've been reading up a bit on partition alignment, and I think I have my partitions mis-aligned. I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general information I found suggests the performance penalty can be quite high (upwards of 60%) and others say it's negligible. What I want to do is determine if partition alignment is a factor in this server's performance problems or not; and if so, to what degree? So I'll put my info out here, and hopefully the community can confirm if my partitions are indeed mis-aligned, and if so, help me put a number to what the performance cost is. Server is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”.   • Windows 8: Default start menu to open on second display

    I have two monitors and I want to keep it soley on my second monitor. I can do this manually by opening the start menu from the secondary monitor and by default next time I open the start menu it will open on the second monitor. Is there an option where I can force it to stay on the secondary display. If I restart or accidently open start from the primary monitor it changes the default start menu display monitor to my primary monitor.

    I have 2 drives in my PC one is primary master and used to be the system drive with windows XP installed. The second one is secondary and has Windows 7 installed that I'm using as the operating system. I want to decommission the old hard drive with XP and re-plug the Windows 7 one as the primary master so I could boot from it. What is the safest way for me to write the correct boot sector on the Windows 7 hard drive so I don't ruin my Windows 7 installation?

    I have four nameservers registered for a domain: ns1.primary-nameserver.net ns2.primary-nameserver.net a.ns.secondary-nameserver.net b.ns.secondary-nameserver.net How can I find out how much usage each nameserver is getting? Or is it safe to assume that it's 25% to each? Update I don't control the nameservers, they are provided by third party suppliers like DNS Made Easy, Zerigo, Route 53, etc. I am trying to establish whether all listed nameservers are used equally.

The problem is that I am on a rackspace cloud server and I need a second partition on both the primary and secondary servers that I will replicate with DRBD. Rackspace does not allow me to create a second partition. I am left with the default single partition. How can I mirror using DRBD?

  • Nginx Proxying to Multiple IP Addresses for CMS' Website Preview

    First-time poster, so bear with me. I'm relatively new to Nginx, but have managed to figure out what I've needed... until now. Nginx v1.0.15 is proxying to PHP-FPM v.5.3.10, which is listening at http://127.0.0.1:9000. [Knock on wood] everything has been running smoothly in terms of hosting our CMS and many websites. Now, we've developed our CMS and configured Nginx such that each supported website has a preview URL (e.g. http://[WebsiteID].ourcms.com/) where the site can be, you guessed it, previewed in those situations where DNS doesn't yet resolve to our server, etc. Specifically, we use Nginx's Map module (http://wiki.nginx.org/HttpMapModule) and a regular expression in the server_name of the CMS' server{ } block to 1) lookup a website's primary domain name from its preview URL and then 2) forward the request to the "matched" primary domain. The corresponding Nginx configuration: map $host $h { 123.ourcms.com www.example1.com; 456.ourcms.com www.example2.com; 789.ourcms.com www.example3.com; } and server { listen [OurCMSIPAddress]:80; listen [OurCMSIPAddress]:443 ssl; root /var/www/ourcms.com; server_name ~^(.*)\.ourcms\.com$; ssl_certificate /etc/nginx/conf.d/ourcms.com.chained.crt; ssl_certificate_key /etc/nginx/conf.d/ourcms.com.key; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1/; proxy_set_header Host $h; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; } } (Note: I do realize that the regex in the server_name should be "tighter" for security reasons and match only the format of the website ID (i.e. a UUID in our case).) This configuration works for 99% of our sites... except those that have a dedicated IP address for an installed SSL certificate. A "502 Bad Gateway" is returned for these and I'm unsure as to why. This is how I think the current configuration works for any requests that match the regex (e.g. http://123.ourcms.com/): Nginx looks up the website's primary domain from the mapping, and as a result of the proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1 directive, passes the request back to Nginx itself, which since the proxied request has a hostname corresponding to the website's primary domain name, via the proxy_set_header Host $h directive, Nginx handles the request as if it was as direct request for that hostname. Please correct me if I'm wrong in this understanding. Should I be proxying to those website's dedicated IP addresses? I tried this, but it didn't seem to work? Is there a setting in the Proxy module that I'm missing? Thanks for the help. MB

    I would like to install linux ubuntu next to my primary windows 7 OS. I found that wubi ubuntu installer which helps you with simple installation/uninstallation of ubuntu. But the wiki says that wubi uses a virtual disk. Is that similar to virtually running the OS? I really dont want my primary system to slow down because of that. Should i rather go with the classical dual boot? If WUBI, whats the recommended install size? Thanks

    Right now if I try to add a non-system user not in the university's Kerberos realm I am prompted for a Kerberos password anyway. Obviously there is no password to be entered, so I just press enter and see: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error passwd: password unchanged Typing passwd newuser has the same issue with the same message. I tried using pwconv in the hopes that only a shadow entry was needed, but it changed nothing. I want to be able to add a local user not in the realm and give them a local password without being bothered about Kerberos. I am on Ubuntu 10.04.   • My new hard drive doesn't have rights on my old one?

    Until recently I had a 1 TB hard disk with Windows 7 on it, I have bought myself a SSD, removed the old harddisc and installed Windows 7 on my new one. After that I put back the old hard disk, and formatted it, now I could use that as backup and to keep files on. Nice, right? Well I was updating .Net framework through Windows update, when it stalled. I noticed some space was used on one of the drives on my secondary 'previously primary' hard disk. Apparently it was the .Net framework, trying to save some temporary files on my secondary disc, because it was the one with the most space. It was like it didn't get access. I cancled the installation and rebooted the computer. Now wanting to remove the temporary folder on my secondary harddisk. It told me. "You don't have access by SYSTEM", I don't understand, my user is administrator, its the only user there is and at the same time I can remove and delete any other folder on that drive. I'm gonna go a little pseudo here. But it feels as if the computer treats the old harddisk as protected from tampering by the new SSD. Also, I feel I should mention, they are both listed as primary, ... primary 0 and primary 1. Both using SATA cable. My old hard drive was partioned into 3 drives. 2 of them said the current owner was 'Administrator/myPCname' and the third one said the current owner was 'SYSTEM' I changed them all into the only one that I could pick from the list, which is my user since the 'Administrators/myPCname' wasn't exactly wrong.. could it be that they were somehow still attached to the old OS?.. the fact is I named my computer the exact same thing as it was called before installing a new windows.. so I can't really tell if its an old ownership or not. Also.. I'm currently logged in as 'myname' and I'm administrator.. now trying to delete the previously mentioned files.. it says 'you need access from 'myname' – and it can't delete.. That seems really messed up, I mean I'm logged in as the name it wants me to use. Is there maybe someway I could reset all the users on my computer? Or create some default? I don't know – I just want it to take a form I have always known, from a standard Windows point of view.

Say I have a database looking like this; Product with columns [ProductName] [Price] [Misc] [Etc] Order with columns [OrderID] [ProductName] [Quantity] [Misc] [Etc] ProductName is primary key of Product, of some string type and unique. OrderID is primary key and of some integer type, and ProductName being a foreign key. The key has been inferred and the definition was created as a read-only table/view." And it decides that the CompletedDateTime field will be this entity primary key. We are using EdmGen to generate the model. Is there a way not to have the entity framework include any field of this view as a primary key? Thanks for help.
