• Ubuntu 12.04, web cam light flashing

  Have been running Ubuntu on my Compaq C757 reliably since 9.10. Currently running a fresh install of 12.04 LTS. Somewhere during my regular updates, my webcam started flashing its power light. Light flashes from logon screen all throughout my session. I am not running Google Chrome but chromium and firefox. Webcam works normally whenever I run Cheese webcam booth, light comes on solid and webcam works normally. I close out of Cheese, webcam shuts off, and then the light starts blinking again. My system is dual boot, when I boot into Windows 7, webcam does not exhibit this problem. I suspect issue may be related to new laptop power management settings in kernel based on research on the web of similar problems, but I do not know how to instruct it to treat webcam differently.

• Do backend developers care what their code looks like in the frontend?

  As a backend and a frontend developer I see the process from start to finish, first by creating the logic, displaying the correct data on a web page and then using frontend skills to make this look awesome. My question is, do pure backend developers care what their code ends up looking like in the frontend? As far as the user is concerned, they will ONLY see design/frontend. They don't actually care that your code is clean, DRY and maintainable. As long as it doesn't disrupt their payment process or flight booking they do not care. Does this affect the average backend developer?

I like to learn from videos but most videos I've found on the internet are provided by people who do not follow good practices. My second option is to learn from books but I did not find a good book for starters in PHP! It would be very helpful for me if you can tell me about your story in learning PHP, what are things that I should avoid? How to learn about PHP security from the beginning to avoid unlearn something later on?.   I am trying to implement a web page recommendation wherein registered users will be given a recommendation of which page to visit depending upon the previous data.So with initial study I decided to go on with clustering the data with rough sets and then will move forward to find out the sequential patters with the use of prefix span algorithm.So now I want to have a better prediction model in place which can predict the access frequency of pages.I have figured out with Markov model but still some more suggestions will be valuable.Also please help me with some references of the models too.Is it possible to directly predict the next page access with the result of PrefixSpan.If so how?

• Website hosting and deployment

  I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

  In a corporate web-design setup, who typically makes more per hour, the graphic designer or the programmer? By graphic designer, I mean somebody who builds mockups probably in photoshop, selects font-styles, colors, etc. Most things layout-wise are near pixel-perfect, but likely after the initial implementation by the programmer, there will be a lot of small changes directed by the graphic designer. By programmer, I mean somebody who is coding the CSS, the HTML, and light backend support, probably in PHP. The programmer will attempt to duplicate the mockups given the limitations of the medium, and consult with the graphic designer afterwards on what changes are tangible and which are not. Both probably have an undergraduate degree from a respected four-year institution.

• Any good web frameworks for asynchronous multiplayer games?

  I'm trying to craft a site for web-based (original) board games, and my client (currently written in Actionscript, but that's highly fungible) works fine - I can play solitaire games in the client - but it has nothing to connect to. What I'm looking for is a server framework for handling accounts/authentication and game tracking: something that would let players log in, show them a list of their current games, let them invite friends to new games, let them make moves in the games they have open, etc. I'm flexible on language; obviously I'm going to have to write a lot of server code to handle the actual game logic, but that should be straightforward enough. I'm more concerned with how to handle the user (and game) DBs, though suggestions for a good server framework for communicating with the DBs (and serving up, most likely, JSON for client communications) are also welcome. Right now my leaning is towards Ruby (probably with Rails) but as far as I can determine it would be a pretty good chunk of effort to set up the necessary databases, so having something even higher-level would be really useful to me.

  I have some usage queries for my web app's database, the results of which I want to display graphically. Is there an easy-to-use api that exists for this purpose? I want to show things like average query-time per user (a small user-base), average query time per day, and things like that. I think it would be cool to show these on a two-axis graph. I am displaying this data on my site, so a jQuery/javascript/html solution for rendering information into graphs would be ideal. Thank you :) P.S. This doesn't look too appealing for clients and I'm afraid that is the reason I am not being hired for a job. I know I am capable of doing web work and such.   I am serching for a script (preferably in PHP) or an external solution which lets me create an "url shortener" with advanced reports. We have been using Google Short Links for a while: it works really well, but it lacks reporting (it only displays a counter with the total number of redirects). Our setup is as follows: "go.mydomain.com" points to the web service, and we can create links such as "go.mydomain.com/product1". What I'm looking for is a similar service (or self-hosted solution) but with advanced reports, so we can track redirects by day, month, etc, distinguish between mobile and desktop users (very important!) and so on.

Mainly, I've been hosting them on Heroku, because of the free tier and the ease of git-enabled application updating. I have seen that a lot of Django users prefer Webfaction. I looked through their offerings, and they seem to me like a standard web hosting service. Questions: Why might be webfaction considered a good hosting service for Django apps? If Heroku is generally called a "Platform-as-a-Service," what does that make Webfaction? Does it have any important similiarities/distinctions from Heroku that I might somehow be missing?

What is the best way to not get my clients original websites penalised for duplicate content? I am planning to have a robots.txt file that disallows all robots, as well as using <link href="http://www.client-canonical-site.com/" rel="canonical" /> in the <head> of the pages. Is that sufficient? Should I use rel=nofollow on all the links as well?

• Bummer | Visual Studio 2012 Error on Web Publish&ndash;July Update

  Always a bummer when you update a product and something stops working.  I am hoping it is an installation issue, but each time I go to run “Publish..” in my Web Application, the publish works, but Visual Studio 2012 crashes.  I just noticed this beginning after I ran the Visual Studio 2012 RC July Updates.   What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.

  I have built a website using PHP and MySQL and now I am looking for a hosting service. I am expecting about a 1000 users registering and about 5-10k pageviews/day in a week's time. So which host should I opt for? It will let users submit contents of type blobs and submit around 10 pictures per users. I hope that traffic will increase so can justhost's or bluehost's shared hosting serve that purpose or should I go for more dedicated ones. Basically the site is write heavy and there are average 2-3 MySQL queries per page and it is quite dynamic. So depending on these requirements which web hosting will be optimal for me.

• Is this Anti-Scraping technique viable with Crawl-Delay?

  I want to prevent web scrapers from abusing 1,000,000 on my website. I'd like to do this by returning a "503 Service Unavailable" error code for users that access an abnormal number of pages per minute. I don't want search engine spiders to ever receive the error. My inclination is to set a robots.txt crawl-delay which will ensure spiders access a number of pages per minute under my 503 threshold. Is this an appropriate solution? Do all major search engines support the directive? Could it negatively affect SEO? Are there any other solutions or recommendations?

• Is there a way to emulate pinch-zoom?

  I'm looking for a way to emulate pinch zoom in either an android emulator(android SDK-less desirable) or a (preferred) native Ubuntu web browser that I can resize to a specified size for initial testing of HTML5 applications. This is would be useful for first round testing during cross-platform application development. Note: I'm trying to do this with no real touch-device only a mouse. So the best answer would be something like "Install this chromium plug-in and use this hotkey to set pinch points" or something similar. We already have this for getting dual mouse working(thanks AmithKK). The browser that supports multi-touch is the hard part. Something to note is that I start getting screen artifacts using multiple mice via that guide. They're mild and tolerable, but they are there.

  I do my php web development locally, as in, creating a local instance of a site and then coding it and then pushing code to servers via git/github. I'm considering getting an android tablet or ipad and a wireless keyboard for very mobile development, but I in no way want to go back to the bad old days of using ftp and syncing up code changes on a development server directly, that would be too much of a trade-off to interest me. Is there enough support for the stack to develop php websites locally on a tablet? Anyone had experience trying this sort of thing?

• Truly useful UML diagrams

  UML has a jungle of Diagrams. Profile Diagrams, Class Diagrams, Package Diagrams... However, (IMH-and-not-too-experienced-O) I quite see that doing each and every diagram is overkill. Therefore, which UML Diagrams are more suitable in a web context, more expecificly a blog (we want to build it from scratchs). I understand that just because I used UML Diagrams does not imply that our code would be great and brilliant... but, it certainly would be better than just unplanified code...

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am frustrated to no end with my current hosting provider, mediaTemple. Yes, they are flashy, and have some decent degree of flexibility with their GS plan, which I have. But anytime I install a site that needs a database, it is slow. like really slow. Taking anywhere from 10 - 15 seconds just to load a page. I would host in house, but there are a lot of complications that come with a LAMP server that I don't want to deal with. Honestly, I'd rather spend the time developing. What can you recommend?
