• Creating User Generated Subdomains

  Hi there, The company I work for is close to being finished with our first web app and we recently made the decision to offer hosting for our smaller customers. (We provide software to lending companies and our larger customers are required to buy redundant servers to host their application). What we are trying to work out right now is how to create user generated subdomains that will hold a new instance of the software. So a user will be able to sign up and say that the company name is XYZ Credit once they click on the create account button a url of xyzcredit.ourcompanyname.com is created and the user is redirected to it. The servers that we want to use are running CentOS 5.5 and Virtualmin 3.83. Thank you for your help, Nick

• Email forwarding to gmail accounts instead of maintaining a mail server?

  I want to set up 4-5 email addresses on my newly purchased domain(from namecheap.com), for team size of just 2-3 people. But I really don't want to maintain my own mail server(don't have the experience as well as want to avoid the expenses involved, may be I could have kept the mail server alongside my webapp on the web server, but I would avoid). So I came across a workaround option to forward the emails. Thus I could setup email forwarding from namecheap's management console to my free gmail accounts. So all my emails would come to gmail account, convenient & familiar interface as well free. Are there any serious drawbacks of this approach ?

Currently we are using Cloudflare (Business) and it's great, except that our website is crushing for around 1 minute every 2 hours on average, and it seems they don't like to give us support.   I am working on a web-based application which combines elements of what my client would call a CMS (content management system) and CRM (customer relations management) but also adds in many other business-specific features such as bookings management, staff task allocation management, wages calculations, document version control etc. However, I'm struggling to find a catch-all term for this type of application so I can research how other people have gone about creating such an integrated solution. Can anyone recommend a term I can use to refer to this, both internally in our team, for the client so they know what to call the 'system' and also for me personally, so that I can ask the Stack community further questions?

• How to implement proper identification and session managent on json post requests?

  I have some minor messaging connection to server from website via json requests. I have single endpoint which distributes requests according to identification data. I am using asynchronous server and handle data when it comes. Now I am thinking about extending requests with some kind of session. What is the best way to define session? Get cookie when registered and use token as long as session runs with each request? Should I implement timeout for token? Is there alternative methods? Can I cache tokens to same origin requests? What could I use on client side (Web browser)? How about safety? What techniques I should use to throw away requests with malformed data, to big data, without choking server down? Should I worry?

• Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

  I am working on a project where we would like to have build a web interface that gives the user the ability to "Google" files in a directory in a remote machine. For example, the user would type a string in a box, and then the system would find all files that contain that string and present them in the browser. The system would then give the user the ability click on any of the files to open them/display them in the browser. We want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible, but don't really know where to start (none of us in the team have much experience building websites).   I have a site done in Rails, which uses javascript to load files and generate forms for the user to input certain information. Those files and parameters are then to be used in a fortran code on the server. When the UI was on the server (using Qt), I would create a parameters file and execute the fortran code using threads so I wouldn't block the computer. Now that is web-based, I need to make the server and browser talk. What's the procedure for that? where should I start looking? I'm already using rails + javascript. I need that extra tool to do the talking, and no idea where to start.

  I need to know how to set up a local webDav server on my PC so that goodreader on ipad can automatically sync with it over the local wifi network? I am really a rookie when it comes to setting up a web server and have tried various guides on the internet. I tried setting up a webdav server using IIS and forwarded the required ports and enabled webdav publishing but goodreader can find it in the local wifi network automatically nor is it able to connect even after manually entering the credendtials. So i'll be really greateful if someone who has successfully setup a webdav server for use with goodreader can point me on how to do it?

  I was wondering what web browsers exist for Ubuntu; I don't want to use wine. I just want the ones written for Ubuntu. I know about Firefox and Google Chrome, you don't need to add them as answers. I've never liked the Ubuntu software center because it never has all of the programs that I might want to install and therefore it's not perfect. I just want a list of all the browsers for Ubuntu and what's the point of them. Example: Firefox: open source, and is pre-installed. Please give me only one browser per answer or this will be confusing.

• Can it be a good idea to create a new table for each client of a webapp?

  This is semi-hypothetical, and as I've no experience in dealing with massive database tables, I have no idea if this is horrible for some reason. On to the situation: Imagine a web based application - lets say accounting software - which has 20,000 clients and each client has 1000+ entries in a table. That's 20 million rows which I know can certainly slow down complex queries. In a case like this, does it make more sense to create a new table in the database for each client? How do databases react to having 20k (or more!) tables?

  I got a hosting account at HOSTGATOR. it was a shared account and i had three websites present over there. now, i have upgraded my account to VPS at HOSTGATOR and i want to transfer only ONE website over the new VPS. say, mydom.net. this website includes wordpress installation and other custom pages and setup can somebody please guide me How can I transfer the web to my new account? with speed, accuracy, and such that my website remains in working condition.. what will I do about wordpress? simply copy it will work?(I dont thnk so), if not how can I move it?   Sorry if I am asking a trivial question but I have been searching for a while without any luck. I need to design a system and I am looking for advice on the technology that should be used. The layout is very simple: it is a sales application with a centralized database and multiple clients. Each salesperson has GUI app installed on his/her laptop that should be able to connect to the database to retrieve data and upload data (i.e. register new orders). My question is the following: how should the communication between the client and the server be implemented? I doubt that connecting directly to the RDBMS is a good idea... Should I use web-services? XML-RPC? How to implement authentication and encode the data? Thanks for your advice!

• Hide from google while developing

  I will be building a (wordpress) web site. While I am developing, other team members will be pushing content. I'd like to have it hidden from google while under development. It will be hosted on godaddy. I have thought of not pointing the domain name to it until live and using "preview dns", or buying a static IP during development. Or hosting dev site in a sub-directory ("/dev/") until ready and then moving it up a level. If in the dev directory I'd add htaccess or robots.txt to not crawl. Is any of this a bad idea? Will google penalize for any of this - like search by IP and then associate that with the domain later on? Any better ideas?

  I'm building a website for a student organization I am involved in at my college. Most of the site will be static - i.e. won't change from year-to-year, but certain pieces will. I am high-tech, but most of the others aren't, and I am graduating in the spring. So how should I go about building the website so as to allow those that take over in subsequent years to edit information? Examples: Events: I already plan on using a Google calendar for this Officers: There will be profiles/pictures for all the officers on the web page Connections: Partnerships with other organizations that we have currently, but may not in future, or may add more in future Should I use some form of CMS (Content Management System)? If so, how restrictive are they (e.g. Drupal) to what you can build and then how easy is it to edit. • How to clean unused app files

  I've finished working on a web app and looking back at the process, I can see that a lot of extra files have been accumulated - backup css, php files, javascripts, images. I'm using an MVC workflow (codeigniter) and I would like to clean the app from unused files. There are also libraries which I've downloaded but referenced some of the files in my code, yet I've kept the unused files too. Total mess really, I'll take a note for the next app to become more organized. There is also a fair security concern regarding these sorts of situations, plus I think that it would be better to omit all the extra files when search engines are indexing the app. Has anyone been in that situation and what is the safest/fastest way to clean the app?   I'm looking for a preferably PHP and web based system, to run on Ubuntu server. Basically it should be a "file forum" in the sense that users can register and be approved to post files to categories. Users with "read" privileges can then go through the categories and download files. Basically I sort of want a FTP-like system, but it should be as easy to manage users, categories, etc as that of a forum system like vB or phpBB. If it could have a forum look and feel that would also be great, but I don't want any discussions taking place.
