• No Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 8. So, how to access similar Defender features/settings?

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro. One of the first things I went to do is install Microsoft Security Essentials, thinking I still needed add-on security software, but I've learned here that it isn't required for Windows 8. Witness: Got Windows 8 or Windows RT? Windows Defender for Windows 8 and Windows RT provides the same level of protection against malware as Microsoft Security Essentials. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 8, but you don't need to — Windows Defender is already included and ready to go. [...] All well and good. However, on Windows 7, once you installed Microsoft Security Essentials, you got a tray icon, and from there you could access the features of MSE, such as perform custom scans, turn off real-time protection (temporarily, of course), check for updates, etc. However, Defender on Windows 8 doesn't display a tray icon – and yes, I've already made sure I'm displaying all icons in the notification area. So, how to access the similar specific features of Windows Defender on Windows 8?

• Xubuntu stuck after login

  How can I debug an issue with Xubuntu 12.04 (fresh install) which just waits idle after a login for about 30 seconds? The login screen is delayed correctly. After login, I get my desktop background, but no panels or auto-starting apps. It doesn't seem to be an authentication/pam issue, because I can login without delay at the console while the graphical session is still stuck. There's no disk or cpu activity and no obvious respawning of any process when I look at htop. There's nothing obviously wrong in .xsession-errors. Most interesting errors: openConnection: connect: No such file or directory cannot connect to brltty at :0 WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-wFn4VR/pkcs11: No such file or directory ... • Uninstall Glassfish and metro completely

  I thought of updating my Glassfish server from 2.1 to 3.1.1 in a Linux machine. I downloaded the .ZIP package. However during uninstalling of Glassfish v2.1 I did not find the uninstall.sh file in "bin" directory. Following are a few steps which I did... I removed the glassfish folder (rm -rf ...) After removing files in the end it gave me a notification that it could not remove 2 files used by Metro. I cant recollect those file names, but I manually deleted that folder. I made a mistake by first not uninstalling Metro. I uninstalled metro completely after that. but it seemed pointless (it uninstalled successfully :P ) I transfered the Glassfish 3.1.1 ZIP file and unzipped and configured it. FOllow are a few Problems I am facing I cannot deploy any of my WAR file. Its giving errors saying " Error creating bean,Instantiation of bean failed etc etc." (However the WAR file is getting deployed successfully in other Linux Machine) When I try installing Metro v2.1 separately, it does not show the admin console or it timesout while starting the domain. The Log File of the Domain says it has started the domain successfully and the process is also created. But after running the command (asadmin) it takes like forever and times out without showing Domain Started Successfully, There is no uninstall.sh in Glassfishv3.1.1 bin directory. How do I completely uninstall Glassfish v 3.1.1 and Metro 2.1 ??? What are the files which I will have to manually remove?

• Which program is locking all my executable files?

  When updating any software product, as well as manually trying to replace .exe files, it says that access is denied to the file and in fact the System process is holding a handle to the file when I check it with Process Explorer. This must be a driver or something that is malfunctioning was my first though, but now I wonder how I figure out which driver / program is doing this and why it is so. Unlocker doesn't seem to be working for me, unless someone can tell me how to use it properly other than making it appear a magical wand in the notification area.... This is what Unlocker puts in my event log: The description for Event ID 1060 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\Unlocker\UnlockerDriver5.sys the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table Upon searching event 1060 I get: <file name> has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Perhaps it is because I have 64 bit?

• Todo/task manager for android and desktop linux

  I'm looking forward to Task/ToDo Manager. It should work under Android, Linux(or Web). If it's very cool, one of them is OK too, Android is preferable in this situation. Necessary features: Russian or English language Possibility to mark task as finished Interesting features: (I want as more, as possible, while it's OK, if some of them isn't avaliable) Nice and easy-to-use interface Possibility to choose finish time for task. After that it's showed as overdue. Possibility to choose start time for task. Before it task is inactive and maybe shown or hide Possibility to add nested tasks. Task marks completed when all sub-tasks are completed. Possibility to make dependencies. If A depends on B, and B isn't finished yet, A is inactive as in third feature. Possibility to create task in a moment without fill-all-this-forms Syncronization between version(Android to linux or Android to web) Notification (on Android only) Features, that I'm not interested in: Creating more than one todo list sharing ToDo's I've seen couple of managers. Best I've seen now is Task Coach for Linux, but I don't very like its interface, and there is no version for Android.

• Server 2008 R2 boot is at 2 hours and counting. What now?

  This morning, we rebooted our Server 2008 R2 box. No problem, came right back up. Then we shut it down and let it install windows updates. While it was off, we added some RAM. Then we turned it back on. The system came right back up to the "press ctrl-alt-delete" screen, so far, so good. I logged in. The system got as far as "Applying Group Policy" -- then spent almost an hour applying drive mappings. Finally finished that, and has now spent 30 minutes on waiting for the Event Notification Service. I still haven't been able to log in. Remote desktop service doesn't appear to be running yet. I tried viewing the event log from another machine. I see that the box is writing to the Security log, but there are no events in System or Application in the last 45 minutes. Digging through the System log of events from 45 minutes ago, I see a bunch of timeouts: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service. [lots of these] A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the wuauserv service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SessionEnv service. • VNC Server that can be used from command line?

  I'm looking for a replacement for a custom vnc server that we have been using in my company for a long time. I need a simple executable that can be run from command line by an IT Support software without the user noticing it (our application will warn the user, we don't want him to see we are using that VNC sever). I need it to support Windows and preferably also OSX. The only option I've found is UltraVNC, but I can't configure it from command line to accept loopback connections without authentication. We have already a whole VNC Viewer + VNC Repeater + Bouncers architecture, and the only missing piece is the VNC Server. Do you know any solution you could suggest me? I'm afraid I'll end up developing a new VNC server myself, may be based on an open source one. EDIT: When I said I don't want the user to notice this VNC server, I should have added that I don't want him even noticing the installation. So better if it can be installed silently or can be executed as a portable executalbe (for instance, ultravnc can be installed and ran as a service from command line, or simply executed quietly, with only a notification icon; its problem is that I can't run it without authentication).

• Software for RAID Failure Alerts?

  I have two 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD disks in a RAID 1 array. I would like to receive a notification if one of the disks in the array fails. Can anybody recommend an application I can install on the server to fire an email if such an event occurs? Here are some additional specs: Supermicro X9SCM-IIF motherboard utilising the hardware RAID controller. OS = Windows 2012 Standard Also is it possible to simulate a disk failure by pulling it out of the bay? SSDs appear to fail close together when in a mirrored config so I'd like to know ASAP if one goes down so I can swap them out with minimum delay. UPDATE 26th June 2013 ------------------------ None of the software that ships with the Supermicro X9SCM-* motherboards offer support for RAID monitoring. As has been pointed out here, these boards are built on an Intel chipset for RAID and so I installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology that supports automated email notifications on RAID failure http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-020784.htm One small issue, the software only allows you to send email notifications without SMTP authentication. • How does KMS (Windows Server 2008 R2) differentiate clients?

  I have recently installed a KMS Server in our domain and deployed 75 new Windows 7 machines using an image I made using Acronis True Image. There are 2 variations of this image rolled out currently. When I go to activate the machines it returns that the KMS count is not sufficient. On the server with a slmgr /dlv it shows: Key Management Service is enabled on this machine. Current count: 2 Listening on Port: 1688 DNS publishing enabled KMS Priority: Normal KMS cumulative requests received from clients: 366 Failed requests received: 2 Requests with License status unlicensed: 0 Requests with License status licensed: 0 Requests with License status Initial Grace period: 1 Requests with License statusLicense expired or hardware out of tolerance: 0 Requests with License status Non genuine grace period: 0 Requests with License status Notification: 363 Is it to do with the fact that I've used the same image for all the PC's? If so how do I get round this. Would changing the SID help? OK knowing I've been thick whats the best way to rectify the situation. Can I sysprep the machines to OOBE on each individual machine? Or would NewSID work?

• What is a good replacement for StumbleUpon's Share feature?

  I've been using Firefox + StumbleUpon's Share feature with my friends for years now. It is a perfect way of sharing links directly with your friends. You first need to be Following each other and then on the SU toolbar, you can "Share" with your list of friends. You can even include a personal message. The friend will receive a notification with # of pending shares in their toolbar (bold & red). They click the stumble button and it will navigate to the site plus show a yellow bar with your message. I literally use it daily. But then Chrome came along and beat the tar out of Firefox (and other browsers) in terms of usability and performance. But it doesn't (and never will according to Google) allow toolbars. StumbleUpon's solution in Chrome is a fake toolbar (html) that gets injected into the page you're viewing. It's buggy and performance is low. Overall it's not an acceptable solution. I'm looking for a replacement with something that is just as easy to send/receive links. I was thinking of Twitter DM's and using a bookmarklet, but I wanted to survey the collective for other options Thanks in advance for your input!

• Using Javascript to call the Azure Blob Storage REST API

  I'm developing a Flash app that saves files to the Azure Blob Storage API. I've learned that you should use the REST API directly rather than a go-between WCF service as this is the most efficient (using a web role is a bottleneck). The problem is that Flash can't do PUT or DELETE methods over Http and has to use external Javascript. This is not an area that I'm familiar with and need some advice/links to examples of using Javascript to work with the Storage API (I've obviously Googled this to no avail). Is this even possible? When i click for instance to delete button, the modal confirmation popup doesn't appear at the right location. It appears outside the visible area and i can only see it when i zoom out only.   Recently, while putting together some code to page Active Directory results beyond sizeLimit=1000, we ran into a strange behavior/bug of AD. Specifically, if we had an OU with a space in the search base, it caused an error: String base = "OU=Area X,OU=myserver,DC=my,DC=ad,DC=myserver,DC=com"; env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "ldap://my.ad.myserver.com:389/" + base); This is the error we received: javax.naming.NamingException: [LDAP: error code 1 - 000020D6: SvcErr: DSID-031007DB, problem 5012 (DIR_ERROR), data 0 When we remove that OU, it works fine. What would cause this to occur? Do we need to encode the space somehow (+ and %20 only caused more issues)? Or is this generally illegal/unnecessary?

I've been creating one repository/service for each model that I create. Is this overkill? Instead, should I create one repository/service for each logical business area that provides CRUD for many different models? To me, it seems like I'm either cluttering the project tree with many files or cluttering a class with many methods. 6 one way half dozen the other. Can you think of any good arguments either way?

• Silverlight Ftp Upload

  Hi I'm working on trying to ftp a file to the server through a silverlight application. Where the location to upload the file on server file system, exists outside the sandbox area for the web server. In this case the web server root exists at "C:\test\www\" and the location to upload the file will exist at "C:\User\Uploads". In this scenerio i'm not sure if Http POST will work (doesn't that use the web server root). I just need to upload the file selected by the user to a different location that may exist outside the sandbox. With silverlight i'm thinking sockets are my last option based on the limited port range for silverlight being 4502-4532. Can i do this using WebClient and Http POST? Can i make an ftp connection through silverlight or javascript?

Unknown Error NullPointerException I cannot determine what this problem is. My project was working a few hours ago. • ASP.NET MVC Areas Application Using Multiple Projects

  Hi I have been following this tutorial: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee307987(VS.100).aspx#registering_routes_in_account_and_store_areas and have an application (a bit more complex) like this set up. All the areas are working fine, however I have noticed that if I change the project name of the Accounts project to say Areas.Accounts, that it wont find any of my views within the accounts project due to the Area name not being the same as the project name e.g. the accounts routes.cs file still has this: public override string AreaName { get { return "Accounts"; } } Does anyone know why I would have to change it to this: public override string AreaName { // Needs to match the project name? get { return "Areas.Accounts"; } } for my views in the accounts project to work? I would really like the AreaName to still be Accounts, but for ASP.net MVC to look in the "Views\Areas\Areas.Accounts\" folder when its all munged into one project, rather than trying to find it within "View\Areas\Accounts\" Thanks Mark

• Uploadify Not Working

  Hello, I'll re-edit this to tackle the uploadify issue. Its very strange, essentially the script isn't uploading and isn't triggering onAllComplete. Also if I try to upload an image that's to large, and click Upload files, it skips from 0 to 100%. But does not trigger onAllComplete. It does not upload either. Whats strange, is I have an earlier revision of this and the codes no different and it works, ive tried switched back to the same jquery/uploadify/layout and it still doesnt work. • Silverstripe | Internal Server Error

  Hi! Silverstripe is running on my since a few weeks. Recently, I get an Internal Server Error message when I try to access the admin area. Having a look in the server's error logs, I discovered following hint: [Mon Apr 05 12:15:26 2010] [error] [client ...] Premature end of script headers: main.php I already was refered to this site: What does the 'premature end of script headers' error mean? But does anybody had this problem in connection with Silverstripe? Would make it much easier to restrict the scope from where the error is caused. Regards, Benedikt

• XAML: make a ScrollViewer show scrollbars when the ScaleTransform of a child object gets big

  Hi. I am making a sort of "print preview" control for some documents in my Silverlight 3 application. I have a Canvas (for showing the document) inside of a ScrollViewer, and I have zoom in / zoom out buttons that control the X and Y Scale properties of the ScaleTransform for the Canvas.RenderTransform property. I want the scrollbars of the ScrollViewer to show up when I "zoom in" enough such that the canvas is no longer visible in the ScrollViewer area, but it seems that they only show up depending on the Width/Height of the Canvas itself, regardless of whether it is zoomed in or not. Can anyone help?
