When I followed through the sample, it never saves any question nor the answer to the database but it manages to create a new survey entry. • Can I send a file to Flex using RubyAMF?

  I'm generating a PNG file in Flex from graphics drawn by user. I would like to send the file to Ruby on Rails backend and I'm using RubyAMF in other parts of the application. I found ways to upload the file using FileReference which uses HTTP but I prefer to send using RubyAMF ,if possible, as it's more efficient. If this is possible what is your suggested method?

• how do I redirect from a subdirectory to another directory, but strip off the original subdirectory

  I have a Ruby on Rails app running on 12001. I am currently redirecting a subdomain to 127.0.0.1:12001 using some ReWriteCond detection. Now I want to redirect my subdirectory to that rails app. http[s]://domain.com/redmine to 127.0.0.1:12001 The current rules apply REQUEST_URI to the above rails path, but I need to strip "/redmine" from the front of REQUEST_URI... Any ideas?

• Are there programs that iteratively write new programs?

  For about a year I have been thinking about writing a program that writes programs. This would primarily be a playful exercise that might teach me some new concepts. My inspiration came from negentropy and the ability for order to emerge from chaos and new chaos to arise out of order in infinite succession. To be more specific, the program would start by writing a short random string. If the string compiles the programs will log it for later comparison. If the string does not compile the program will try to rewrite it until it does compile. As more strings (mini 'useless' programs) are logged they can be parsed for similarities and used to generate a grammar. This grammar can then be drawn on to write more strings that have a higher probability of compilation than purely random strings. This is obviously more than a little silly, but I thought it would be fun to try and grow a program like this. And as a byproduct I get a bunch of unique programs that I can visualize and call art. I'll probably write this in Ruby due to its simple syntax and dynamic compilation and then I will visualize in processing using ruby-processing. What I would like to know is: Is there a name for this type of programming? What currently exists in this field? Who are the primary contributors? BONUS! - In what ways can I procedurally assign value to output programs beyond compiles(y/n)? I may want to extend the functionality of this program to generate a program based on parameters, but I want the program to define those parameters through running the programs that compile and assigning meaning to the programs output. This question is probably more involved than reasonable for a bonus, but if you can think of a simple way to get something like this done in less than 23 lines or one hyperlink, please toss it into your response. I know that this is not quite meta-programming and from the little I know of AI and generative algorithms they are usually more goal oriented than what I am thinking. What would be optimal is a program that continually rewrites and improves itself so I don't have to ^_^

• Matching day in datetime field from sqlite

  In Ruby on Rails I'm doing something like: Appointment.find( :first, :conditions => "staff_id = #{staff_id} AND datetimefield = #{datetime}") ... where datetimefield is of course, a datetime field.   Not sure if many people are familiar with Scaffolding Extensions for Ruby, but I've looked through their docs, forums, and even the source code of the Heroku test site, and not found an answer. I made a basic Sinatra app and followed right from the RDoc's instructions: require 'scaffolding_extensions' require 'sinatra/base' class Thingy < Sinatra::Base scaffold_all_models end gives undefined method 'scaffold_all_models' for Thingy:Class (NoMethodError) and I know Scaffolding Extensions is loadable because I can successfully set some config variables in its classes.

• curb not working with rails

  I have a simple class that is using curb to retrieve data. Everything works just find from the command line, but when I load it into my rails application WebBrick crashes on the "require 'curb'" statement. I'm extremely new to ruby so I'm not sure how exactly to debug the error from webbrick to determine what is wrong. If someone knows how to solve this issue that would be great, if someone could also point me into the right direction to start troubleshooting the issue myself that would also help.

• AJAX in Rails - doing simple looping to update information when available

  I am trying to get put out a simple site, which would pool the database every few seconds and update the information on the page dynamicly, when theres something new inserted. I am farily new to ruby, but I understand the whole concept of RJS, link_to_function and soforth.   I was following a video tutorial by Adam Keys about how to make a URL shortener app in Sinatra.
