• How do I make a hyperlink to a local executable?

  We have an Intranet website, and a WPF windows executable installed on every workstation. How can we create a hyperlink on the intranet website that will launch the locally installed executable? Ideally we want the launch to be seamless. Is there a way of setting the browsers trust settings so that it won't display a security warning dialog for this executable? We have full admin capabilities on each workstation, and each user only uses Internet Explorer. We also know the correct local path for the exe.

  Hi guys, What would be considered the best practice in duplicating [cloning] a LINQ to SQL entity resulting in a new record in the database? The context is that I wish to make a duplicate function for records in a grid of an admin. website and after trying a few things and the obvious, read data, alter ID=0, change name, submitChanges(), and hitting an exception, lol. I thought I might stop and ask an expert. I wish to start with first reading the record, altering the name by prefixing with "Copy Of " and then saving as a new record.

• MVC - Same URL, multiple views

  Hi, Is it considered bad practice to have multiple views for same URL in MVC, based on different user roles? For example: http://www.domain.com/ViewProductID/123 will show a "normal" product page for a regular user and it will show an "enhanced" (product stats, ability to edit title etc..) version to someone logged in as admin. If it's bad practice, why? If it's ok, what's the best way to implement it? 2 separate templates or 1 template scattered with if..else? Thanks!

• PHP controllable menubar position

  I'm an admin for a page and I want to give certain users dynamic control of the menubar layout. The ideal would be a page with a list with menu items and arrows pointing up and down with each item and when you click them the item is reordered. I have a pretty basic idea of how I can do it but I would like some suggestions. The items are stored in MySQL and I only need help figuring out how the items should be ordered or numbered and how to re-order them. This probably needs some javascript trickery and I'm not familiar with JS.

• Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome. • Routing WCF Traffic Based on URI Domain Requested

  Is there a way to route traffic to a target WCF service file based on the URL domain requested? Basically, I have a single WCF RESTful services project with 3 service files offering different endpoints. It's hosted on a single IIS6 site looking for multiple host header values on port 80. I want to route traffic to different services files whether the requester is asking for www.site1.com, www.site2.com, or www.site3.com. Seems like the sort of thing I would use a global.asax or HTTP Handler for, but I am not sure since this is a regular WCF Service Application. Even though I am on IIS6 for this project, I don't mind using a URL re-writer and wildcard mapping, if I have to. I have admin rights on the balanced servers where this will reside, I just want to know if there is a common/best practice before I start hacking my way around this.

  hi, i have webpage in which a webpart contains a Chart control. the problem is chart control is rendered perfectly when i login as central admin. but when i login as another user with contribute permisson following problems occur. when i change webconfig as --- add key="ChartImageHandler" value="storage=file;timeout=20;dir=c:\TempImageFiles\;"--- page is not at all loaded. i get error like YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO VIEW THIS PAGE. when i change the wbconfig as --- add key="ChartImageHandler" value="storage=memory;timeout=20;URL=/_layouts/Images/MicrosoftChartControls/" --- the page loads fine but image is not rendered. A red mark appears in place of image. I tried all optins got by googling.. any more suggestions/help will be welcomed

• Change Gmail message routing on individual mailboxes

  We are using dual delivery for one of our Google Apps doamins and need to be able to disable mail delivery to the Gmail account. You can manually update the settings on a per user basis through the Admin interface by unchecking the box next to "Google Apps Email" in the Email routing section. From the Google Apps API documentation for the python library it does not appear that I programmatically disable the email routing for "Google Apps Email" on a per user basis. Does anyone know if it's possible? The only routing related method I can find is at the Domain level and not the user level. gdata.apps.adminsettings.service Thank you!

• Hudson jobs won't call javac?

  Hi, I have just set up Hudson on my server. For some reason, my build will not call javac to compile my builds...? I have set the path to the JDK in the Manage Hudson area, and it seems to recognise it (doesn't give me a warning). Is there something else I'm supposed to do? • Creating a PHP call home "time bomb" to protect my interests

  Hi everyone, I produced a PHP web app for a client some months back that is hosted on their own server. I have still not been paid for this work, and they are giving me the runaround. It turns out that I still have remote admin access to their server, so I can make code changes. What I was thinking of doing was to move the core kernel off-site onto one of my own servers, and program in some kind of callback or include that gets the kernel (critical functions) from my server. Give it two weeks or so for their backups to catch this change, and then pull the plug and exercise leverage. If I do this, they will pay immediately, because the site is a critical one for a very large and influential client of theirs. What is the most effective and easiest way of doing this? What code do I use? Thanks for any pointers.

  Hello, I'm the part time FTP server administrator (with no real full-time admin). We currently only allow ACTV mode connections. Some of our clients have had issues with this but for the most part they've been ok using ACTV. For the few who aren't, we've been able to push the data over to their servers from ours. there is one client in particular however who is currently having trouble. He is using file-zilla and issuing a PORT command. First, does using the PORT command imply that you are in ACTV mode? Second is there a way in FileZilla to explicitly change to ACTV mode?   Hey, What SQL query would I have to use if I want to get the results from a table 'messages' but exclude rows that have the value in 'messages_view' where field messages.message=messages_view.id AND messages.deleted=1 AND messages_view.user=$somephpvariable In more laymen terms, I have a messages table with each message denoted by an 'id' as well as a messages_view table connected with a 'message' field. I want to get the rows in message that are not deleted (comes from messages_view) for a specific 'user'. 'deleted'=1 when the message is deleted. • Embarrassingly parallel workflow creates too many output files

  On a Linux cluster I run many (N > 10^6) independent computations. Each computation takes only a few minutes and the output is a handful of lines. When N was small I was able to store each result in a separate file to be parsed later. With large N however, I find that I am wasting storage space (for the file creation) and simple commands like ls require extra care due to internal limits of bash: -bash: /bin/ls: Argument list too long. Each computation is required to run through a qsub scheduling algorithm so I am unable to create a master program which simply aggregates the output data to a single file. The simple solution of appending to a single fails when two programs finish at the same time and interleave their output. I have no admin access to the cluster, so installing a system-wide database is not an option. How can I collate the output data from embarrassingly parallel computation before it gets unmanageable?

  I have a web page, used for admin purposes, which runs a task (image fetching from a remote site). In order to be able to debug the task using the browser only, no ssh etc, I'd like to be able to read all log output from the executing thread and spit it out to the web page. The task boils down to: Changing log level for current thread at the beginning of the call and restore when the call is done. Reading all log output by current thread and storing it in a string. So in pseudocode my execute() method would look like this: (I'm using struts2) public String execute() throws Exception { turnLoggingLevelToDebugOnlyForThisThread() ... do stuff... restoreLoggingLevelForThisThread() String logs = readAllLogsByThisThread(); } Can this be done with log4j? I'm using tomcat, struts2, log4j and slf4j.

The problem is that I'm trying to use a variable with ::ldap::add and it's just not working. • European signs in img src problem

  Hey. I recently encountered a strange problem on my website. Images with æ ø and å in them (Western European signs) Won't display. The character encoding on all sites is "Iso-8859-1" I can print æ ø and å on the page without problems. If I right click the "broken image" and choose properties, it displays the filename with the european signs. (/admin/content/galleri/å.jpg) the code for img looks like this <img name='bilde' src='content/{$_SESSION["linkname"]}/{$row["img"]}' class='topmargin_ss leftmargin_ms rightmargin_s' width='80' height='80'> (Wasn't allowed to post images so the code is without starting and ending brackets) Made 4 files: z.jpg æ.jpg ø.jpg å.jpg Only z.jpg shows up, they are the exact same jpg. The images are uploaded using php code, which works, uploads to the right directory and has no problem with the european signs. Does anybody know what could be causing this?

• Using GET instead of POST to delete data behind authenticated pages

  I know you should use POST whenever data will be modified on a public website. There are several reasons including the fact that search engines will follow all the links and modify the data. My question is do you think it is OK to use GET behind authenticated pages in something like an admin interface? One example would be a list of products with a delete link on each row. Since the only way to get to the page is if you are logged in, is there any harm in just using a link with the product ID in the query string?

• Storing users in a database

  Im wondering whats the best way of storing different types of users in my database. I am writing an application that has 4 main user types (admin, school, teacher, student). At the moment I have a table for each of these but i'm not sure thats the best way of storing user information. For instance... Allowing students to PM other student is simple (store sender and receiver student_id) but enabling teachers to PM students requires another table (sender teacher_id, sender student_id). Should all users be stored in one users table with a user_type field? If so, the teacher / student specific information will still have to be stored in another table. users user_id, password_hash, user_type students user_id, student_specific_stuff... teachers user_id, teacher_specific_stuff... How do I stop a user who has a user_type = student from being accidentally being entered into the teachers table (as both have a user_id) Just want to make sure I get the database correct before i go any further.
