• How to connect to a legacy Informix database?

  I have to connect my app to a customer's Informix 7.2 legacy database. From what I was able to find out, in theory there should be a database service running on port 50000. The problem is that I cannot find any database service in the Operative System. So far I'm only able to use dbaccess and perform queries from the command line. I would like to use a database driver (such as http://code.google.com/p/ibm-db/) so my app can connect and query the database using a cursor, but since I cannot find any database service, apparently I can't... Am I missing something here? Are there options I'm not considering? Is it possible to have an Informix database in which the only interface is dbaccess?

• Developing a very nonstandard Drupal form

  I'm creating a site for a local retail shop using Drupal. Everything's been going very smoothly up until this current bit. It's a comic shop, and I want to make a place where people can manage their own subscriptions. Since the number of different titles a customer subscribes to can vary pretty widely, I want a way to make a completely dynamic form, with people able to add as many new lines as they need and I'm really struggling with Drupal's documentation. • Merge Primary Keys - Cascade Update

  Is there a way to merge two primary keys into one and then cascade update all affected relationships? Here's the scenario: Customers (idCustomer int PK, Company varchar(50), etc) CustomerContacts (idCustomerContact int PK, idCustomer int FK, Name varchar(50), etc) CustomerNotes (idCustomerNote int PK, idCustomer int FK, Note Text, etc) Sometimes customers need to be merged into one. For example, you have a customer with the id of 1 and another with the id of 2. You want to merge both, so that everything that was 2 is now 1. I know I could write a script that updates all affected tables one by one, but I'd like to make it more future proof by using the cascade rules, so I don't have to update the script every time there is a new relationship added. Any ideas?

It means, that even if the aggressor takes control over the machine where data is stored or machine with the application server, he can't read some business critical data from the database. This is a customer's requirement. I'm going to encrypt data with some assymetric algorithm and I need some good ideas, where to store private keys, so that data is secure as well as the application usability was quite comfortable? We can assume, for simplicity, that only one key pair is used.

• Treating a fat webservice in .net 3.5 c#

  I'm dealing with an obese 3rd party webservice that returns about 3mb of data for a simple search results, about 50% of the data in that response is junk. Would it make sense then to remap this data to my own result object and ditch the response so I'm storing 1-2 mb in memory for filtering and sorting rather than using the web-responses own object and using 2-4 or am I missing a point? So far I've been accessing the webservice from a separate project and using a new class to provide the interaction and to handle the persistence so my project looks like this |- Web (mvc2 proj) |- DAL (database/storage fluent-nhibernate) |- SVCGateway (interaction layer + webservice related models) |- Services -------------- |- Tests |- Specs I'm trying to make the application behave fast and I also need to store the result set temporarily in case a customer goes to view the product and wants to go back to the results. (Service returns only 500 of possible 14K results). So basically I'm looking for confirmation that I'm doing the right thing in pushing the results into my own objects or if I'm breaking some rule or even if there's a better way of handling it. I know this can be done adding button to a body and attaching a click listener but I am stumped at a point where I need to resize my iframe (UI after they click a button) and it cannot be done from internal iframe.   hi I'm using Drupal, Views with a exposed filter (using taxonomy). My customer wants to set from back-end the default selected tags (in order to pre-filter the views content). In the exposed filter settings, there is functionality. However, it doesn't work properly: when I click on "Select None" link (I'm using better_exposed_filter module) I expect none of the tags are selected, instead, the default configuration (default selected tags) are selected, so actually it doesn't work anymore. I hope it is clear. So, I was wondering if I can prepare a custom menu in which my user can check/uncheck the default selected tags in the view. thanks

• Data clean up: are there libraries of common permutations that we can use? Or is there a better appr

  We are working on clean-up and analysis of a lot of human-entered customer data. We need to decide programmatically whether 2 addresses (for example) are the same, even though the data was entered with slight variations. Right now we run each address through fairly simplistic string replacement (replacing avenue with ave, for example), concatenate the fields and compare the results. We are doing something similar with names. At the very least, it seems like our list of search-replace values should already exist somewhere. Or perhaps you can suggest a totally different and superior way to detect matches?

  I was working on a project to submit a form from an email. The scenario is this. We will send a form to list of emails where in the customer has to fill in the form and once they hit submit, the form should be submitted and server should be able to retrieve the values that is provided by the person filling in.When i tried, it was not considering the submit button as form submit and no action is being performed. • Can you in any way interface Ruby Gems with PHP, Python, etc.?

  Stupid question, and forgive me for asking, but someone is asking me, and I am not a super expert with Rails yet. Suppose I have some Rails gem I write. Now suppose a customer has some other framework, like Django or CakePHP, and I want to provide the functionality offered by my gem (eg. CRUD for automotive data) to them as a module in their framework. Could I somehow make it so they could interface my gem with Django or CakePHP? Obviously I could do something with some API magic--and I'll probably end up going that route. But I just want to know whether there is a way to directly interface with Gems from a non-Rails application.

• Is it possible to query a XML file with SQL?

  Currently I'm working on a case where we don't want to change to much on a c#/wpf program, but like to add a feature. Currently we allow certain users to add sql queries to a database to retrieve customer data, hereby a custom connection string/ provider name must be specified. With this information it's possible to create the connection and obtain the data with c#. However we like to add the possibility to allow that user group to query XML files too, with a certain connection string/ provider name. I just had a look for possibities in .net to do that, but can't seem to find a decent way... Is something like this possible? (OleDb/ODBC way maybe?) Thanks in advance.

• What's a good way to encrypt data using an asymmetric key, that's available to both java and ruby?

  I have a customer that wants to encrypt some data in his database (not passwords; this needs actual encryption, not hashing). The application which will be doing the encrypting/writing is in Java, but the process which will DECRYPT it is behind a secure firewall, and is written in ruby. The idea was to use a public/private key scheme; the java system would encrypt it with the public key, then the process on his local box would use the private key to decrypt it as needed. I'm looking for any experience anyone has doing something like that; my main question is what sorts of libraries on java and ruby can interoperate with the same keys and data.

  So I have this table of book orders, it contains 2 columns, one is the order ID(primary key) and another is the ID of the book that the customer ordered. For example: | OrderID | BookID | | 0001 | B002 | | 0002 | B005 | | 0003 | B002 | | 0004 | B003 | | 0005 | B005 | | 0006 | B002 | | 0007 | B002 | What I want is to get the IDs of the books that got 2 or more purchases/orders, for example if I run the SQL query against the above data, I would get this as the result: | BookID | | B002 | | B005 | I don't know if this can be archived in SQL or I have to built a simpler statement and repetitive run the query against all the records in another language. • How many databases to support eCommerce?

  I have a system with two databases, one that the customer-facing website uses, the second that is used by the "backroom" order-fulfillment system. I've been asked to run queries from the website to the backroom system. I'd rather not, it seems risky to allow web-based request to run unheeded on the internal system. Additionally, this means opening up routing in the firewall to allow external connections to the internal server. What's the best practice for eCommerce? Run the entire company off of one database? Or individual databases for each system, and middleware to connect them? Sometimes it might be necessary for the web application to pull date from the internal system, but not based on an HTTP request from the internet. I'm sure the best answer is "it depends!" So, if people have a rule of thumb for when to use middleware and when not to, I'd like to here it.

• In CQRS (event-sourced), do you need a global sequence counter in the event store?

  In trying to get my head around CQRS (and DDD in general) I have come across situations when two events occur on different aggregates but the order of them has domain meaning. If so then they could happen so close together that a timestamp (as used by the sample implementations I have seen) cannot differentiate them, meaning the event store doesn't contain a 'complete' representation of the domain as there is ambiguity over the order in which events occurred. As an example, the domain could fire a CustomerCreatedEvent which applies to the Customer aggregate, and then a CustomerAssignedToAgent event on the Agent aggregate. The CustomerAssignedToAgent event doesn't make sense if it occurs before the CustomerCreatedEvent, but typically both of these might be fired as a result of one operation which makes it likely that the timestamps would effectively be the same. So am I just modelling things badly? Should there ever be a situation where the sequence of events across different aggregates is important? Or should you keep a global sequence number on your event store, so that you can identify the exact sequence in which events occurred?

  I have to rewrite and greatly modify parts of a legacy COBOL application. The COBOL source-code is available (around 100.000 lines of copy & pasted code mixed with GOTOs). Some more details on the system: It is a general management system controlling transactions, bank management, customer data and employees of the company I work for. The COBOL-powered database is about 4 Terabytes distributed over 50 old HDDs. (But messing around with them is the sysadmins job) They are using COBOL85 only. Now I have two options: Rewrite and refactor 50% of the old COBOL system, or use X86 assembly. Should I use X86 assembler or COBOL?

  We have a modular application where modules have their own log4j logs (i.e. communication log and error log). The appenders and categories for these are all configured in the core log4j XML, but not all modules are always installed. The DailyRollingFileAppender creates its file regardless of use and that exposes the full set of modules although not present and as some of them are customer specific we'd like to hide logs not in use. Is there a way to make DailyRollingFileAppender create its file on first use instead of automatically at startup?
