• ClearTrace Supports SQL Server 2008 R2

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build.   I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 64Bit. How to disable ubuntu enter password for keyring default to unlock prompt ? Every time I open Chrome or ubuntu software center, this annoying window jump out. I have being searching online for a long time, most of the answers are like delete ~/.gnome2/keyring XX , but I don't have such directory or go to password and keys , disable some option, but this window is empty in my case, very strange , even I add a new password keyring, it is still empty. None of these methods works in my case. I will be very appreciate if you can help

• How do I recover a BTRFS partition that will not mount?

  The installation for 12.04 kept failing, and the solution was to have the installer ignore the btrfs partition that I have previously been using for /home. Now that it's installed, I've been trying to get it to mount the btrfs partition so that I can access my 70GB of files. It won't mount, and btrfsck errors out with the following three lines: parent transid verify failed on 31302336512 wanted 62455 found 62456 parent transid verify failed on 31302336512 wanted 62455 found 62456 parent transid verify failed on 31302336512 wanted 62455 found 62456 Can someone please tell me how to get this partition working? I've read online that I can probably recover the data using btrfs-restore, but I can't find that program anywhere.

• Writing drivers for a printer?

  My goal is to be able to fax 20 page pdf documents for free. I've looked online, and there are some free fax services, but all of them have their limits. I do have an old fax machine, but the documents that need to be faxed are on the computer, and to print them would be far from free. Unfortunately, the only way to send a fax with the machine is by scanning it. What's strange is that it can scan to the computer and print from it, but it won't fax from it... :(. Is it possible to write something (preferably C#, but it's going to take some learning anyway) that will allow me to send a fax from the computer? I have very little software experience, and none in anything like this, so I have no idea where to start. If it is possible, where can I find all the information needed to write the program?

• Player rewards in games where you normally have nothing to purchase

  In many games there are rewards such as gold coins, points, etc. When these rewards can be used to purchase in-game items, it motivates the player to keep playing. Let's say we have an online game, poker, Yatzy etc. What type of reward would keep the players playing if there are few in-game items available to buy, or none at all? What I am looking for is a reward system that entices the players to play more in a game environment where there isn't that much to purchase. For example, there isn't much to buy in a poker or Yatzy game with the gold you win. I guess having some titles that are added to the userid is one way, or maybe purchasing a logo for the id... A leaderboard is another. Any thoughts on this?

• Edubuntu - Java Iced Tea and Carnegie Learning

  I've recently built a computer lab running various forms of Ubuntu. I'm testing out Edubuntu to see if it is a better fit for our school, but I'm running up against a problem I can't resolve. One of the programs we use is Carnegie Learning Online, a Java program that I've managed to get working on both Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04. After updating Java (all distros), when you access the website a .tt applet file is downloaded. With Java installed you can select the IcedTea plugin to open it. On 10.04/12.04, this then opens a new window, Java runs a setup of some sort, and then a new window with the Carnegie program opens. On Edubuntu however, once you've told IcedTea to run it....nothing happens. No errors, just nothing. I've tried this with an older update of Java as well as the newest. Any ideas?

• How do I read my PDFs and watch videos properly again?

  Whenever I watch videos, either online of local via Totem and/or open PDF files using evince. The system gets really, really bogged down. All apps get really slow, menus take forever to display, switching windows gives me time to make a coffee, etc. I have a couple of bug reports open on this, but what do I need to do to really troubleshoot the issue? I've purged Adobe Flash from the system, but YouTube HTML5 videos still have the issue. A bunch of PDFs saved locally trigger the problem. And to (temporarily) remove the slowness, I need to shutdown the computer, breath for a few minutes, then restart. A simple reboot does not do the trick. How can I identify the cause? This only started on 13.04. I've had Ubuntu on this machine for a year without a problem until "upgrading" to 13.04. I am not a programmer, but I suspect an issue with the Intel video driver.

• Audio programming resources

  I've been very interested in the last few months about getting in to audio programming (I'm from a musical background). I've been a .NET developer for two years and have also done some objective c for an iPhone app recently. I realise I would probably need to work on my C++ chops and have been having a play around with FMOD EX and doing a lot of research into the industry. I was just wondering if anyone could suggest some good resources for audio programming (be they websites, podcasts, books, videos, online courses etc). Anything from Fourier analysis, low level coding, audio engine creation to audio APIs. I just want to learn as much as possible! Thanks in advance.

• Should I understand SVN before I jump to GIT?

  I work in a department where no one has ever used source control before, including myself. I am trying to push the concept. I have spent a little while researching SVN. I some basics learned. I can Create/update/checkout/commit with command line and from Tortoise. I am starting to learn how to tag and branch but still confused a lot about conflicts between branches and trunk etc. I am still learning, but I do not have a physical person who can show me anything. Its all from books/tutorials and trial and error. From what I have read online it seems like git is the better thing to know, but its also more complicated. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Should I continue to master svn before moving to git or would I be wiser to just jump to git now? Are there pros and cons to both approaches?

Any hint? Is there any way to sync WM6 and Evolution (preferably without intermediate online syncs as Gmail, for instance)? Update: opensync-module-python exists in the repositories for previous versions of Ubuntu (mine is 10.10).... could I install it from there or would I ruin something? Update: should I mark this as impossible? Seems to be no way to sync WM6 phone with Evolution right now....

  I want to make a delicate application of mine (an antivirus actually) open source but I want to have a control on who really obtains the source or not. Preferably they should apply and I or administrators approve their applications. Is there any online platform for this? The main reason for the control/security is to possibly prevent malware makers to easily discover how to bypass the stealth checking methods it utilizes for malware detection. • Installing driver for Ralink Realtek 8187 WiFi adapter

  I purchased a WiFi adapter online, and it came with an installation CD with drivers. I installed it just fine on Windows, and am now trying on Ubuntu 10.10. The CD came with the driver files for Linux as well, but I have no idea why they aren't working - my guess is that I don't properly understand what to do with them. I have uploaded the contents of the folder which came with the CD here. There is a README in there, but the instructions under the installation header didn't get me anywhere unfortunately. • How can I programmatically block user input for a given time?

  As a person working in computer science working offline to avoid facebook and thelike is not always (meaning hardly ever) possible for me since I mostly have to be online to work. I have tried leechblock and similar things but the problem becomes that at some point I start making systems for myself to hack, which is kind of pointless if oyu have root. I would very much like to try out the method described here. (Short version: reboot your PC every time finish a task or get bored with it) Unlike for the author of this blog my work is mainly done not in screen sessions but in IDEs ans other not-so-fast-to-start-up stuff, meaning a full reboot including loading all my programs will take its time. So, the question is: How can I block all user input and preferrably blank the screen for a given amount of time? The idea would then be to have a keyboard shortcut to activate the script/program (which would probably also have to have root i guess?)

  When somebody did mention "PSY" during a dinner at OOW this year with customers and colleagues from Korea I was completely clueless. I even didn't understand correctly who or what "PSY" is. I did forget about that until last week as a German online magazine did report on over 500 mio youtube hits for "Gangnam Style". Well ... I didn't know that I've almost missed a global phenomenon. And now I've learned that the song is omnipresent in Korea (and not only here) - and Gangnam is a really nice (and expensive) quarter of Seoul not that far away from my hotel. And if you need some rest during your lunch break you may watch these youtube vids - but don't blame me if you don't get the song out of your head anymore ... Gangnam Style by PSY Eton Style - my personal favorite Jakarta Flash Mob - wow! And NO - that's not the type of music I'd usually listen to!!!

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04.1 and run Gnome Shell. I am consistently getting a pop up window prompting me for my Gmail address book authentication. The window pops up the moment I type something into gnome shell after hitting the super key. I'm assuming that Ubuntu wants to search my address book for people to include in the search. I have opened up the settings and deleted my account from the online accounts section and rebooted, nothing seems to stop the popup. Where is it getting my email address from? Most importantly, how to I stop this super annoying popup from appearing?
