• Cannot boot into ubuntu 12.10

  Below given are the steps which I followed to install ubuntu 12.10 with existing windows 8 in my machine. I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 into my disk and made it bootable from my usb by selecting that iso file. Then restared my mahine and in BIOS I selected boot from usb. Went into Linux os and selected install ubuntu alongside windows 8. It asked for memory allocation and I selected 550 GB for Ubuntu and 404GB for Windows. After that it completed ubuntu installation. The booted into my windows 8 and used easyBCD to add a new entry. Ubuntu grup2 Now the easyBCD shows, There are a total of 4 entries listed in the bootloader. • Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • Ubuntu hangs after replugging the modem

  I am facing this issue on Ubuntu 12.04, which is for my Wimax modem with beceem chipset. If I replug the device Ubuntu goes in hang state. Its happens very often. If I plug the USB and restart it works most of the time. But it is very annoying to restart every time it hangs. The modem works smoothly in Windows 7. And it used to work OK in Ubuntu 11.10. • My laptop with Linux/ Ubuntu isn't working

  I have a dell laptop with ubuntu linux. A day I tried to start it up and a black screen just appeared that says: GNU GRUB version1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3 (and these clickable options:) -Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic -Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode) -Memory test (memtest86+) -Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) When I click the first one, a bunch of text appears like: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/8396a225... failed: invalid argument mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init No init found. Try passing init= bootarg Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) (initramfs) When I enter 'help' a bunch more incomprehensible text appears. Whenever I press the enter key all that pops up is (intetramfs) If anyone can make rhyme or reason out of this please, please help me out so it can boot up normally and i can be set. If there's some kind of special code I have to type in or something I know nothing about computers.

• Chainloading GRUB2 from BURG

  I have an old PC with Puppy Linux in addition to Ubuntu and Windows XP. THis creates a LOT of menu entries (all of which I would like to keep): Ubuntu 10.04 Ubuntu Recovery Mode Memtest x86 Memtest Serial Windows XP Pro Precise Puppy Linux Precise Puppy TORAM Puppy 4.3.1 Puppy 4.3.1 TORAM Plop Boot Manager (for booting to USB, PC doesn't have BIOS option). Now, in my fancy shiny laptop I've gotten really attached to BURG, and would like a setup where I have a Windows icon, an Ubuntu icon, and an arrow that chainloads GRUB2 so that I can boot from USB or run Puppy if need be (all these entries will obviously not fit into the BURG theme I use, Lightness). The problem is, GRUB2 can't install the the beginning of a partition like it used to be able to (I am reluctant to specify andything with --force at the end), at least, without warning that warn: This is a BAD idea!. So I'm kind of at a loss here. I can't see how the folding option would work, because all of those other options would have the same icon once I unfolded (Lightness is non-text-based). If I do embed GRUB using grub-install /dev/sdax --force, how do I chainload it with BURG? Is there another way?

The code implements proper event sequence, consistent interfaces, correct data and control flow, completeness, appropriate allocation timing and sizing budgets, and error definition, isolation, and recovery. and The software components and units of each software item have been completely and correctly integrated into the software item Not sure how to verify without testing but it is not there as a technique. From IEEE: Verification: The process of evaluating software to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of that phase. [IEEE-STD-610]. Validation: The process of evaluating software during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. [IEEE-STD-610] At the end of development phase? That would mean UAT.. So the question is, what testing (unit, integration, system, uat) will be considered verification or validation? I do not understand why some say dynamic verification is testing, while others that only validation. An example: I am testing an application. System requirements say there are two fields with max. lenght of 64 characters and Save button. Use case say: User will fill in first and last name and save. When checking the fields and Save button presence, I would say its verification. When I follow the use case, its validation. So its both together, done on the system as a whole.

• USB mass storage couldn't get mounted

  It's my android phone SD card which was indicated damaged by android yesterday night, out of the blue! I put it directly to a USB port with a USB SD card holder case, so in that way I can recover it with TestDisk, which I had experienced before on a similar situation. I also noticed that there is a change in file system and capacity: File System : RAW Capacity : 0 (unknown capacity) Also TestDisk doesn't show it on its partitions list. A 2 GB SD card is not that important in price but I've a lot of files and medias which I need them. Used a mini card reader, TestDisk displayed it on its list but a quick search and or a deep search doesn't have any results No partition found or selected for recovery and then I should quit the program. Your help is appreciated. • Setting up dual monitors, Xorg.conf issues

  I just got a new computer (W520, Graphics card nVidia GF106 [Quadro 2000]) and installed ubuntu on it using wubi. I have everything working, so I wanted to set it up to be able to use two monitors with an extended screen. I figured I had to edit Xorg.conf, but the file didnt exist. • Black screen with thinkpad edge e525, AMD radeon HD before and after installation, plymouth?

  I have a new thinkpad edge e525 (which should work) and wanted to try ubuntu (first linux experience). With the ubuntu desktop-cd I had a blackscreen before installation, I could fix that with nomodeset. After the installation, when rebooting I got the black screen again. First I see some ubuntu colour with a green busted stripe. I have the same problem with the live boot, also tried mint live, the stripe gets pink. I installed xubuntu 64bit from an alternate cd and I didnt have problems until de reboot after the installation. Same problem, just a black screen with the green stripe than blackscreen. I tried several things: adding nomodeset to the bootmenu, but than I get: No connection to plymouth and it is stuck at checking the battery status. I tried to replace quiet splash with text. Didnt work either. actually one time I saw a blue booting image before that. I managed to get a root command though via the recovery boot. I didnt dare to just remove the plymouth package. Can I just delete plymouth or do I have to deinstall it as described in several ways. (Problem is, right now the notebook doesnt have a internet connection. And I dont know how to manage it with a usb stick?) Or do I have to install the AMD catalyst driver manually? (Again, how can I do that with an usb stick) I also tried this: Ubuntu hits a black screen after boot. Is there any solution without internet? And if I need internet which is the right one? Please explain step by step what I have to write and so on! Thank you! also tried: set gfxpayload=text and: just remove splash and adding vesafb.nonsense=1 to the grub editor, because I couldnt find it anywhere

• Ubuntu server 11.04 recognize only 1 core instead of 4

  I searched for other questions and googled a lot but I don't find a solution for solving this problem. Ubuntu Server 11.04 64bit installed on Dell Poweredge with Intel Xeon X5450. He only recognize 1 of the 4 cores I have. Tried to modify the GRUB config but didn't work. IN the machine BIOS I didn't find anything useful. • Windows 7 and Ubuntu Boot/Corruption Problems

  I searched around, but I couldn't find the answer to why Windows 7 Ultimate 64x and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64x could'nt live together happily on my Asus G1s-X1 laptop. I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64x installed on the laptop when I bought it (bought it used, it comes with Vista new) and I wanted to try out Ubuntu and see what all the hype about the free OS was. I installed Ubuntu on an external 80GB iomega HDD with Windows 7 on my main drive. They both work fine for about 2-3 weeks, until Ubuntu suddenly is unable to boot. A few days after Ubuntu fails, Windows corrupts majorly (winload.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, and various others corrupt randomly) and Windows Recovery Environment is completely useless. Booting to a live USB with Ubuntu and trying to reinstall it fails, and trying to wipe the main drive and install it there fails as well (something about my graphics card.) I managed to get Windows 7 Ultimate 64x back up and running (after many disk formats) but now I am left with a broken (and invisible) Ubuntu installation on the external drive. Is there any way to get the broken and non-bootable Ubuntu installation off the HDD without damaging or erasing the many files and programs installed and stored on the 80GB drive?

• Failure to Boot Windows 7 after Ubuntu install

  My computer is a (brand new) PC notebook, without a CD drive running Windows 7. I followed this page to install from USB: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStickQuick The installation went well and i am using Ubuntu now (v. 12.04 i believe) I want to be able to dual boot Ubuntu and Win7 The problem is that the disc partitioning during the Linux install caused a problem with Windows, caused some problem with windows, and windows can no longer boot when i choose it at the GNU GRUB screen. When i restart my computer i can successfully boot Linux, but not Windows 7. At the GRUB screen - if i run Win7 normally, it freezes, shows a blue screen, and returns back to GRUB - if i run Win7 recovery, i dont know how to access the files that i need in order to run windows again, so nothing helpful happens. Can you please tell me what i would need to do(or link a guide) in order to run Windows again. (Windows and Linux is preferable, but if thats impossible going back to only Windows will help too) Im guessing the easiest thing to do is just to reinstall both OS, or is there anyway to undo the partition i made during the install? • Restart and/or graphics problem in Ubuntu 12.04

  I having been using 12.04 for a couple of months now, with v. little problems. The other day I restarted my computer, and though I think it rebooted, the screen would be black. I could not even get a visual from a live cd. Finally, I was able to get it to load, but the resolution has been completely off. The computer thinks I have a laptop screen, when I actually have a ViewSonic VP2330wb, and it detects only two resolutions. And still, I have a problem with rebooting. If the screen locks after I leave it for a while, I can't get a visual back, and then when I force a shutdown, it takes 3 times for me to get a grub screen. Then I have to boot in recovery mode, and then finally in normal mode, but the screen is still always off. • My computer will not reboot after fresh install of ubuntu 12.04LTS

  I bought a new computer yesterday and it came with Windows 8. When installing Ubuntu, i choose the erase and install option thinking that Ubuntu would install easily like it did for my old laptop... After a successful install and following the instructions telling me to reboot to finish installation and remove installation media. It worked and my computer booted fine, however once I began installing updates via update manager and activating additional driver {ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)} out of the following: Experimental AMD binary Xorg driver and kernel module ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (*experimental*beta) ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates) Then reboot to finish making changes I reboot and get an error (Reboot and select proper boot device) At this point I was stuck, so I eventually reinstalled ubuntu and repeated the exacted same steps until right before i rebooted to finish making changes. However this time i used this Boot Repair tool sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair boot-repair After running the program i get a "boot successfully repaired" message. Then I try to reboot again and get the GNU Grub screen where it says would you like to boot: normal recovery memorytest Once it begins loading, you see the code moving across the screen then it pauses when it gets to and doesnt do anything. If someone could tell me how to fix this or get Windows 8 back soon, I'd appreciate it because like i said i just bought it yesterday and now i cant even use it.

  At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. • To Virtual or Not to Virtual

  I recently made a comment "I hate everything virtual" while responding to a SQL server performance question.  I then promptly fired up my Hyper-V development environment to do my proof of concept stuff, and realized that I made the cardinal sin of making a generalized comment about something, instead of saying "It depends". The bottom line is if the virtual environment gives the throughput that the server needs, then it is not that big of a deal.  I just have seen so many environment set up with SQL server sitting in virtual environment sitting in a SAN, so on top of having to plan for loss data, I now have to plan for my virtual environment failing for so many different reasons, thought SQL 2012 High Availability Group should make that easier.  To me, a virtual environment makes sense for a stateless application with big scalibility requirement, but doesn't give much benefit to an application where performance and data integrity are both important.  If security is not a concern, I would just build servers with multiple instances on them to balance the workload. Maybe this is also too generalized a comment, and I'll confess that I'm not a DBA by trade.  I'd love to hear the pros and cons of virtualizing a SQL server, or other examples where virtualization makes total sense (not just money, but recovery, rollback, etc.)

• Getting file system free space

  This isn't a problem as such, more a request for information based on ignorance of the Linux filesystem. The very short question is: How do I find out how much free and used space there is on the volume from which Ubuntu is running? More detail: I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 from a 64Gb USB3 stick, created from booting up a year-old Ubuntu 12.04 DVD and running Startup Disk Creator. The reason for this is that the Master Boot Record on my hard disk, holding Windoze 7, has gone belly-up, and whilst awaiting a recovery disk I'm running Ubunto off USB or DVD as a 'trial'. (And will continue to run Ubuntu after restoring Windoze, as I've rediscovered my love of the penguin :o)) After installing Ubuntu on the stick I ran the software update app, which downloaded some 450Mb of updates and took a couple of hours to install to the stick. A couple of times I got a message saying that disk space was short. So I looked in the file manager (or whatever it's called these days) and couldn't see the stick listed, just: SYSTEM hard disk (listed as 479Gb Filesystem) two other partitions that had been created by Windoze "4.3GB Filesystem" which when I try to open gives the error "Could not find /cow", and when I try to unmount it tells me I can't because it's not mounted - D'OH!! Edit: screenshot of file manager Edit: screenshot of low disk space warning What I can't see is the USB stick from which I'm running Ubuntu. Where's it gone, anybody know? This is tangentially related to a previous question of mine about system tools, in that I'm trying to get control and knowledge of the system in the newest incarnation of Ubuntu.

• Dual booted Windows 7 freezes after login screen

  First-time Linux user, using a Packard Bell Easy Note TS laptop. My problem arose after I dual boot installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 via WUBI. I backed up all my data, and reinstalled Windows from factory settings on the recovery partition. When I first tried to install Ubuntu I mistakenly closed the lid at the start of the installation, stopping it. After that I rebooted, and my second installation attempt went without a hitch. Ubuntu works perfectly, the data on the partitions seem to be fine. My problem is I can't log back in to Windows 7. After selecting it in GRUB, and then in the Windows 7/ WUBI choice on boot, it loads up perfectly til the user log in screen. After the password is inputted, it stalls on the "Welcome" busy screen. This happens in Safe mode as well. Startup repair can't find a problem and neither can CHKDSK. System restore and Last known good config have no effect either. If anyone could help me out, I'd be real grateful. edit in response to the question below, since I don't know how to comment: Windows was installed first and its partitions are the first on the list. Should I move the windows partitions to after the Linux ones on the disk? Thanks for your help.

• Ubuntu won't start - blank screen with flashing white cursor

  My laptop is dual-booted with Windows 8 on one partition and Ubuntu 12.04.3 on the other. I've searched for my issue already, but nothing I've found so far has solved the problem. Since last week, when I try to boot Ubuntu from GRUB, I am taken to a purple screen (as usual), but then to a black screen with a blinking white _ cursor. I've tried leaving it, but nothing else happens. When I hold Shift and edit the GRUB entry to change 'quiet slash' to 'text', the back screen instead asks for my login and password. When I put them in, it tells me the date of my last logon, and then waits for further commands. Being very very new to Ubuntu, I have no idea at all what to try out at this point. I tried to launch FailsafeX, but while that was beginning, it said "unable to run server /usr/bin/x" No such file or directory", then shortly after returned to the recovery mode menu. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete goes through an Ubuntu loading screen, then the laptop then restarts. Any suggestions will be very appreciated, and apologies if this is a common issue that has been answered a million times before.

• GUI based backup utility [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Comparison of backup tools I have read favorable reviews for 'Back In Time' for the purpose stated above. Still I am posting this question as I have some demands in my mind. Few years back I was using ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery by IBM on my Lenovo PC under Windows. That provided me nice features like compressed backups, boot time options - OS Repair, Restore entire OS, restore entire system to an older date, restore individual files etc. Out of these the feature I liked the most was compressed backups. Similar features are available in software like Norton Ghost too. In Back In Time I was surprised to see that the snapshot takes up same amount of space as that of the original contents, no compression at all. Furthermore, I was not able to find options to change the compression ratio etc. under settings. According to me compression of backups is a must have feature. Therefore, can anyone suggest me any other utility which can serve the purpose. I insist on GUI based tool since I don't want to mess up with backups!
