• A resource for installation or setup folder hierarchy of various applications

  Is there a web site (or something else) that has information on folders and their hierarchy where various programs and applications are installed? Please let me explain. I am writing an application that (part of what it does) references certain files installed by other application. To be able to determine the file paths for these folders I have to download and install each application seperatly on my development pc, search for the file I want, and then write its path in my application. This method is very time consuming and, frankly, boring, as it requires downloading and installing each application (some of them in excess of 600MB) and then locating the required file just to be able to "know" its path. So, I was wondering if there is something that could speed things up. like, for example, a website that would have such information. I tried each of the applications own website for information but no dice. Any help from you will be much appreciated. Many thanks

• Which jsPerf-test should I consider as standard for checking the performance of javascript template-engines

  I am on a search for a javascript template engine that has good performance when used in large js applications and is also very suitable for mobile applications. So I have gone through the various jsPerf-tests for these. There seems to be a lot which show different results and it is confusing to find out which is the standard test. Can some one guide me a standard jsPerf that I can refer to and that should also include following templates dust, underscore, hogan, mustache, handlebars. From what I have observed dot.js is a constant performer with good rendering speed, but is it mature enough for larger applications ? What is this "with" and "no with" that is shown in the jspref tests? Can some one explain. In all the tests I have seen popular templates like mustache, handlebars, dust, hogan,etc seems to be behind performance than other templates, so why people are using them leaving out the top performers,is it because of maturity of these template engines? • Clone LINQ To SQL object Extension Method throws object dispose exception....

  Hello all, I have this extension method for cloning my LINQ To SQL objects: public static T CloneObjectGraph<T>(this T obj) where T : class { var serializer = new DataContractSerializer(typeof(T), null, int.MaxValue, false, true, null); using (var ms = new System.IO.MemoryStream()) { serializer.WriteObject(ms, obj); ms.Position = 0; return (T)serializer.ReadObject(ms); } } But while i carry objects with not all references loaded, while qyuerying with DataLoadOptions, sometimes it throws the object disposed exception, but thing is I don't ask for references that is not loaded (null). e.g. I have Customer with many references and i just need to carry on memory the Address reference EntityRef< and i don't Load anything else. But while i clone the object this exception forces me to load all the EntitySet< references with the Customer object, which might be too much and slow down the application speed. Any suggestions?

What should I choose? 1st priority is power and functionality, 2nd priority is beauty and maintainability of code and ease of use, 3rd priority is flexibility and modularity, 4th priority is speed and size. IE compatibility hardly matters, I'd like it to be modern, legacy-free and standard-conformant.

• jQuery timer, ajax, and "nice time"

  So for this is what I've got: $(document).ready(function () { $("#div p").load("/update/temp.php"); function addOne() { var number = parseInt($("#div p").html()); return number + 1; } setInterval(function () { $("#div p").text(addOne()); }, 1000); setInterval(function () { $("#geupdate p").load("/update/temp.php");} ,10000); }); So this grabs a a UNIX timestamp from temp.php and puts into into #div p, and then adds 1 to it every second, and then every 10 seconds it will check the original file to keep it up to speed. My problem is that I need to format this UNIX timestamp into a format such as "1 day 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds ago", while also doing all the incrementation and ajax calls. I'm not very experienced with jquery/javascript, so I might be missing something basic.

  Recently I use data binding to speed up my development of C# winforms application. But I found that data binding is just useful when the control is Textbox or textare and text kind of controls. If things come to be radio button, image control or datagridview, it's hard for me to use data binding. For example, it's hard for me to bind a group of radio button to a database field. It's hard for me to pre-process the data in database and then bind to datagridview control(I know I can use view to do this, but it is not that convenient) So I really want to know, most of you guys when will use data binding? And how will you use it ?

I have heard that I can configure the Vim editor to be able to go from object to the definition from function to the definition from class name to the definition Do we have any professional Vim-er that could tell me how exactly to configure Vim for that? • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - 99% fragmentation on non-clustered, non-unique index

  I have a table with several indexes (defined below). One of the indexes (IX_external_guid_3) has 99% fragmentation regardless of rebuilding/reorganizing the index. Anyone have any idea as to what might cause this, or the best way to fix it? We are using Entity Framework 4.0 to query this, the EF queries on the other indexed fields about 10x faster on average then the external_guid_3 field, however an ADO.Net query is roughly the same speed on both (though 2x slower than the EF Query to indexed fields). • Asp.net Site on GoDaddy Loads Slowly

  I just published a very small site to GoDaddy that I programmed in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008. The site only contains 6 sheets, none of which are data intensive. Each has a few small images that serve mostly to navigate to the other sheets. There is no data, no SQL, nothing like that. There is one master page that governs the page layout for all of the pages. Everything works fine, for the most part. I am posting because the site loads quite slowly, particularly considering how little content is being loaded. Can anybody give me any advice about what I should look at to speed this thing up a little bit? Is this an asp.net issue? Use of master pages? Godaddy? Something else? I'm a newbie, so speak slowly. • Is there a lightweight datagrid alternative in Flex ?

  What is the most performant way of displaying a table of data in Flex? Are there alternatives to the native Flex Datagrid Component? Alternatives that are noted for their rendering speed? Are there other ways to display a table? I have a datagrid with roughly 70 lines and 7 columns of simple text data. This is currently created and loaded in memory. This is being refreshed rapidly (about 800 msec) and there is a slight lag in other animations when it is rendering the table... So I am trying to cut down this render time.

• What is faster? Drawing or Compositing?

  I make extensive use of -drawRect: to do some nice animations. A timer tries to fire 30 times per second with -setNeedsDisplay, but it feels like just 20 times. Also I can't use -setNeedsDisplayInRect: because the animation covers the entire thing. Would it help to take some of those drawing operations out of -drawRect: and move them to a subview? -drawRect has to do less then, but instead the OS will have more work with compositing views. Is there a rule of thumb which one is more worse? I remember from an apple text that they claimed Core Animation doesn't redraw during animation. So is that their secret of speed? Using subviews in animations?

• How can I join on a CSV varchar?

  I have a varchar field that contains a string like "10,11,12,13". How can I use that CSV string to join to another table with those IDs? Here's the approach I'm taking now: select * from SomeTable a WHERE (',' + @csvString + ',') LIKE '%,' + CONVERT(varchar(25), a.ID) + ',%' Where @csvString is "10,11,12,...". I intend to use this method as a join condition as well. That method works, but it's rather slow (using CAST doesn't improve the speed). I understand that having CSVs in the database like that is usually a very silly idea in most cases, but there's nothing I can do about that.

• Is there a chance that sending an email via a thread could ever fail to complete?

  I have a project where I send a couple of emails via a seperet thread, to speed up the process for the end-user. It works successfully, but i was just wondering whether there were any potfalls that i might not have considered? My greatest fear is that the user clicks a button, it says that the message has been sent (as it will have been sent to the thread for sending) but for some reason the thread might fail to send it. Are there any situations where a thread could be aborted prematurely? Please note, that i am not talking about network outages or obvious issues with an email recipient not existing. For simplicites sake please assume that the connect is up, the mail server alive and the recipient valid. Is it possible, for example, for the thread to abort prematurely if the user kills the browser before the thread has completed? This might be a silly question, but i just wanted to make sure i knew the full ramifications of using a thread in this manner. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

• IE6 background appears-disappears on scrolling

  Hi, Given IE6, an UL-LI list and a background image for the UL container. <style> ul {background-image: url(images/bgr.png);} </style> ... <ul> <li>...</li> ... </ul> When I load the page, the background is randomly loaded, some parts are visible, some are not. Moreover, it changes on runtime when I'm scrolling on the page. When I scroll out the UL list and scroll back, different parts of the background will be visible, depends on the speed of scrolling.   I'm trying to update certain controls according to a selection in a dropdown list. For example, in the "selectedIndexChanged" event of a dropDownList, if a user selects the value "sport-car" the text box "payload" is disabled and the textbox "max speed" is enabled. private sub dropDownList1_SelectedIndexChanged(byval sender as object, byval e as eventargs) handles dropDownList1.SelectedIndexChanged If dropDownList1.selectedValue = "sport-car" then textBox_payLoad.enabled = false textBox_maxSpeed.enabled = true end if end sub When I'm doing something like this, the controls aren't enabled/disabled, even the event (wich I've added a breakpoint) seems not to be raised (sometimes several time after it is raised). Also, when the instructions in the condition is executed, nothing changes. What am I doing wrong? Maybe this is a very easy issue, but I'm a begginer in MS Visual Web Developer.

• different small js files per page VS. 1x site-wide js file?

  Different pages of my site have different js needs (plugins mainly), some need a lightbox, some dont, some need a carousel, some dont etc. With regards to pageloading speed should i option 1 - reference each js file when it is needed: so one page might have: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.easydrag.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/colorbox/jquery.colorbox-min.js"></script> and another have: <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/typewatch.js"></script> option 2 - combine and compress into one site_wide.js file: so each page would reference: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/site_wide.js"></script> there would be unused selectors/event listeners though, how bad is this? I would include any plugin notes/accreditations at the top of the site_wide.js file

• How can I test if a point lies within a 3d shape with its surface defined by a point cloud?

  Hi I have a collection of points which describe the surface of a shape that should be roughly spherical, and I need a method with which to determine if any other given point lies within this shape. I've previously been approximating the shape as an exact sphere, but this has proven too inaccurate and I need a more accurate method. Simplicity and speed is favourable over complete accuracy, a good approximation will suffice. I've come across techniques for converting a point cloud to a 3d mesh, but most things I have found have been very complicated, and I am looking for something as simple as possible. Any ideas? • SQL Server - Storing multiple decimal values in a column?

  I know storing multiple values in a column. Not a good idea. It violates first normal form --- which states NO multi valued attributes. Normalize period... I am using SQL Server 2005 I have a table that require to store lower limit and uppper limit for a measurement, think of it as a minimum and maximum speed limit... only problem is only 2 % out of hundread i need upper limit. I will only have data for lower limit. I was thinking to store both values in a column (Sparse column introduces in 2008 so not for me) Is there a way...? Not sure about XML..

• Is the method addSubview of NSView inherently slow? (Cocoa OSX)

  I am trying to speed my gui that loads very slow slow when I am loading a large project (the gui is a representation of groups and sub groups and is made up of many views). During this process I was looking at how long certain code segments take to execute and I have found that a call to addsubview is taking between 10 and 20 milliseconds most of the time. The subview I was looking at is a disclosure button. I am wondering if this method is just inherently slow or is their some other factor at work here? Is the time it takes to add the subview dependent on the complexity of the subview or is that not a factor? Also, is there some other method that can be used to add a subview that might be faster?

  I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

  I'm using YSlow to improve the speed of my site, and I'm having trouble with the "compress components with gzip" grade. I have this in my .htaccess file: SetOutputFilter DEFLATE AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css application/x-javascript But YSlow is saying There are 4 plain text components that should be sent compressed * http://crewinyourcode.com/css/reset.css * http://crewinyourcode.com/css/inner-pages/index.css * http://crewinyourcode.com/script/css/jquery-ui-1.8.custom.css * http://crewinyourcode.com/js/inner-pages/index.js How can I gzip the css and js files? Also...I don't have access to the httpd.conf file.

• Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

  I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

  Let's see how many of us fit the old stereotype, shall we? Do you typically use caffeine when programming? During the day or at night? How frequently do you pull all-nighters? Do you use caffeine when you do stay up late? Do you prefer to have a large amount of caffeine all at once, or small amounts over a longer period of time? Do you use energy drinks, 5-hour energy shots, coffee, tea, or caffeine pills? How about other stimulants such as amphetamines? For instance, I've known a programmer who dabbled in speed because they believed it increased their ability to focus on programming, though happily they're clean now and quite honest about the whole experience.
