  • Which build tool to teach?

    While similiar questions have been asked, this one's focused on which is best/easiest to teach. I'm giving a weekly tutorial at my university focusing on data structures and algorithms. Fromn time to time I introduce tools which may prove helpful in future projects like JUnit, Mercurial, Eclipse etc.. I plan to show them some kind of build tool but I'm not sure which one to choose. I by myself have very little knowledge about build tools, except a little experience in using make. It's more the concept of a build tool I want to show them, not a special tool per se. Which would be the most easiest/future proof/whatever tool to show them? I've read a little bit about Gradle, which looks nice, but so far I think Ant could be a good choice (it's a Java course I'm giving).

  • need to add secure ftp file upload area to a client's website

    This is a variation on a previous question as I am having tons of trouble finding answers in all my relentless online searches. Am designing a website for an architecture firm. They want their clients to be able to upload files to them, through a link on their site, via ftp. They also want to have a sign in for their clients, and ensure the uploads are secure. I can figure out how to make a form that has a file upload area - but just don't understand the ftp and the secure part... I understand html, css and a bit of JQuery; the rest is still very challenging to me. Have found something called net2ftp that claims to do what I'm looking for - but the even the installation instructions (for administrators, here: http://www.net2ftp.com/help.html) confuse me. Do I need a MySQL database? Where do I put in Admin password they refer to? It goes on... Is there anything "easier" out there that anyone knows of? I have read that I should be Googling "file managers" - but don't know if these can be embedded in a client's website. I even need to understand of what happens to said file, and where it ends up, when client clicks the upload link. Oh - I am so in over head on this one.

  • performance monitoring tools for multi-tenant web application

    We have a need to monitor performance of our java web app. We are looking for some tolls which can help us with this task. The major difficulty is that we are SaaS provider with multi-tenant server architecture with hundreds of customers running on the same hardware. So far we tried commercial products like DynaTrace and Coradinat but unfortunately they don't get the job done so far. What we need is a simple report which would tell us if we had performance problems on each customer site in a specified period of time. Mostly it will be response time per customer but also we will need some more specifics based on the URLs. please let me know if someone had any experience with setting up such monitoring. Thanks!

  • ISO/IEC Website and Charging for C and C++ Standards

    The ISO C Standard (ISO/IEC 9899) and the ISO C++ Standard (ISO/IEC 14882) are not published online; instead, one must purchase the PDF for each of those standards. I am wondering what the rationale is behind this... is it not detrimental to both the C and C++ programming languages that the authoritative specification for these languages is not made freely available and searchable online? Doesn't this encourage the use of possibly inaccurate, non-authoritative sources for information regarding these standards? While I understand that much time and effort has gone into developing the C and C++ standards, I am still somewhat puzzled by the choice to charge for the specification. The OpenGroup Base Specification, for example, is available for free online; they make money buy charging for certification. Does anyone know why the ISO standards committees don't make their revenue in certifying standards compliance, instead of charging for these documents? Also, does anyone know if the ISO standards committee's atrociously looking website is intentionally made to look that way? It's as if they don't want people visiting and buying the spec. One last thing... the C and C++ standards are generally described as "open standards"... while I realize that this means that anyone is permitted to implement the standard, should that definition of "open" be revised? Charging for the standard rather than making it openly available seems contrary to the spirit of openness. P.S. I do have a copy of the ISO/IEC 9899:1999 and ISO/IEC 14882:2003, so please no remarks about being cheap or anything... although if you are tempted to say such things, you might want to consider the high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who might not have all that much extra cash. Also, you might want to consider the fact that the ISO website is really sketchy and they don't even tell you the cost until you proceed to the checkout... doesn't really encourage one to go and get a copy, now does it?

  • DWR and other possible tools for build java application level Ajax framework

    I would assume that this question would have been asked in different ways already, but I could not find one so posting it. Sorry if its a repetition The basic idea which I am trying to explore is to design a common Ajax framework/API for our application. The main requirement is to have a common framework in the product which every module in the application can call whenever it needs to provide Ajax behavior. We basically have a page based application and not everything would be Ajax for sure. Mostly it will be smaller pieces of work which Ajax will handle. We have used GWT and it works great. But we have some constraints because of which certain areas in the application need to build standard jsp and html pages only I know little bit about dwr and it looks very promising (as even answered by some people). I wanted to know what are the other possible frameworks like dwr which I can evaluate too, before making the decision

  • Tools to document/visualize call graph?

    Hi, having recently joined a project with a vast amount of code to get to grips with, I would like to start documenting and visualizing some of the flows through the call graph to give me a better understanding of how everything fits together. This is what I would like to see in my ideal tool: every node is a function/method nodes are connected if one function can call another optional square box in between detailing conditions under which call is made (or a label icon you can hover over like a tooltip) also icon on edge describing parameters hover over node and description is displayed optional icons for node to display pseudo code scenario/domain view - display subset of complete diagram for particular use-case slide view mode - for each frame, the currently executing function is highlighted plenty of options over what to display to reduce on-screen clutter the interactive use of such a tool is key, I'm not looking for a Graphviz type solution because there would be too much clutter. The ability to form a view of a subset of the entire graph would be very handy (maybe with the unimportant clutter greyed out). Don't need automatic generation from source code, happy to enter it manually. Almost like a mind-map. Does that make sense? If you are not aware of such a tool, do you also think it would be useful? (Just in case I decide to go and scratch that itch one day!)

  • architecture and tools for a remote control application?

    I'm working on the design of a remote control application. From my iPhone or a web browser, I'll send a few commands. Soon my home computer will perform the commands and send back results. I know there are remote desktop apps, but I want something programmable, something simpler, and something that I wrote. My current direction is to use Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) as the message bus. The iPhone places some messages in a queue. My local Java/JRuby program notices the messages on the queue, performs the work and sends back status via a different queue. This will be a very low-volume application. At $1.00 for a million requests (plus a handful of data transfer charges), Amazon SQS looks a lot more affordable than having my own server of any type. And super reliable, that's important for me too. Are there better/standard toolkits or architectures for this kind of remote control? Cost is not a big issue, but I prefer the tons I learn by doing it myself. I'm moderately concerned about security, but doubt it will be a problem. The list of commands recognized will be very short, and only recognized in specific contexts. No "erase hard drive" stuff. update: I'll probably distribute these programs to some other people who want the same function, but who don't have Amazon SQS accounts. For now, they'll use anonymous access to my queues, with random 80-character queue names.

  • How can I share an entity framework model across website users

    Hello, Currently my website is based around MVC and the Entity Framework running against a SQL Server 2005 database. So far, it has all been running very smoothly, and I really enjoy MVC and its slimmer more concise code (and no huge viewstates or soul destroying postbacks ;)) Recently I was working on upgrading the site to use a simple forum system, and this is where I started running into problems. When I was testing the site using two different browsers, if I created or replied to a post in one browser, the other browser couldn't see the post. At the moment, each visitor to the site gets their own copy of the entity model, which I store in their session data. Obviously this is the problem as updates to one model aren't getting carried to the other. As a test, I tried storing a single copy of the model which all visitors would access by assigning the model to a static variable. This worked, and both browsers could see each others modifications. However, it had its side effects. For example, if I fired up both browsers at the same time and the model was initialized, one browser would crash, and the other would work fine, despite me using a locking object so in theory one of them should have been delayed until the model was ready (of course I could have implemented this wrong ;)). Also, originally this site did use one model for all visitors and when it was live, it frequently shut down - killing the IIS application pool while it did. Now I'm not sure if this was related, but I don't really want to reintroduce whatever bug I had that caused this shut down. So, my question is a simple one really - what is the best way of either using the same model for all website users so they all see updates, or if they do have separate copies (which I imagine will have a performance impact in time) how can the models detect changes in the database and update themselves according.     About fonts and colors in the VS2010 C# text editor with Resharper installed. In the following method: public void Method() { var lis = new System.Collections.ArrayList(); var exc = new System.NotImplementedException(); } ArrayList gets another color as NotImplementedException in the VS2010 text editor, because I edited the color scheme. What would be the difference in these kinds of types so that the color scheme handles them differently? Note that I have Resharper installed but I also tried almost all Resharper entries. I would like to have the ame color for both, but the color of the NotImplementedException type seems immutable.

  • Looking for a free tool to visualize object relationships for C#

    Here is my ideal solution: a free tool that reads a .csporj or .sln and generates a pretty picture that shows all the objects and how they are related. By relationships, I don't mean inheritance but rather dependency. For example, if we have a Car object and Car has a member variable Wheel, I would like that Car depends on Wheel to be visualized in the graph. I know visual studio can do inheritance graphs, but that is only half of what I am looking for. Is what I am looking for possible? Are there any tools that do something similar?
