• In a client-server relationship, should the server always rethrow the exception to the client?

  I have a set of web services (the server), and an app which consumes this (client). In this sort of relationship, should the server always throw exceptions (ie in the throw block, rethrow the caught exception), and the client catch this. Exceptions which the server can handle, it will deal with and not rethrow, but everything else will be thrown to the calling layer for further action (the consuming app can raise a msg box or whatever). Is this a good example of an exception that can be dealt with: A file cannot be written because the directory requires special privileges, so if this raises an exception, the file is written somewhere which does not require admin rights. • Rails: getting logic to run at end of request, regardless of filter chain aborts?

  Is there a reliable mechanism discussed in rails documentation for calling a function at the end of the request, regardless of filter chain aborts? It's not after filters, because after filters don't get called if any prior filter redirected or rendered. For context, I'm trying to put some structured profiling/reporting information into the app log at the end of every request. This information is collected throughought the request lifetime via instance variables wrapped in custom controller accessors, and dumped at the end in a JSON blob for use by a post-processing script. My end goal is to generate reports about my application's logical query distribution (things that depend on controller logic, not just request URIs and parameters), performance profile (time spent in specific DB queries or blocked on webservices), failure rates (including invalid incoming requests that get rejected by before_filter validation rules), and a slew of other things that cannot really be parsed from the basic information in the application and apache logs. At a higher level, is there a different "rails way" that solves my app profiling goal?

• Windows Mobile 6.5 SndPlayAsync - C# wrapper?

  Hello I'm implementing mp3 playback on Windows Mobile 6.5. I need to use SndPlayAsync API function since I don't want to block calling thread until the file is played (SndPlaySync blocks until the audio file is playing). Unfortunately the SndPlayAsync method takes sound handle instead of sound file path as parameter so there's a need to open the handle before and release of it after playback. The problem is that I don't have any information about the playback completion in this API. Did anybody use a C# wrapper for this API? Where can I get one? I've looked up OPENNETCF but they seem not to support this API. Regards

• Switching between TabBarController Views when event fired

  I have a UITabBarController with two different views to switch between. What I would like to do is when a button is clicked in View1 to switch directly to View2. Then in View2 if they click a button it switches them to View1. • Copying blocks (ie: copying them to instance variables) in Objective-C

  I'm trying to understand blocks. I get how to use them normally, when passed directly to a method. I'm interested now in taking a block, storing it (say) in an instance variable and calling it later. The blocks programming guide makes it sound like I can do this, by using Block_copy / retain to copy the block away, but when I try to run it I crash my program. - (void) setupStoredBlock { int salt = 42; m_storedBlock = ^(int incoming){ return 2 + incoming + salt; }; [m_storedBlock retain]; } I try to call it later: - (void) runStoredBlock { int outputValue = m_storedBlock(5); NSLog(@"When we ran our stored blockwe got back: %d", outputValue); [m_storedBlock release]; } Anyone have any insights? • How can I call an Actionscript function when the .swf is referenced by jQuery?

  I have an .swf that I am embedding into HTML using the jQuery SWF Object plugin (http://jquery.thewikies.com/swfobject). I have a number of functions within the .swf that I need to call from within javascript functions. I've made these actionscript functions accessible to javascript by calling flash.external.ExternalInterface.addCallback(). Yet nothing happens when I make the call. I've had this happen before and it seems to be that when you reference the .swf from jQuery, you can't call flash functions. Is there anyway around this (aside from not using jQuery)? Thanks.

  I've never really used threading before in C# where I need to have two threads, as well as the main UI thread.   is there a way to define a value within a class in the __init__ part, send it to some variable outside of the class without calling another function within the class? like class c: def __init__(self, a): self.a = a b = 4 # do something like this so that outside of class c, # b is set to 4 automatically when i use class c def function(self): ... # whatever. this doesnt matter i have multiple classes that have different values for b. i could just make a list that tells the computer to change b, but i would rather set b within each class

• PHP Default Timezone issue on Fedora + Zend Server CE

  I have ZendServer CE (PHP 5.2) installed on a Fedora VM, and I have the system timezone set to 'America/Chicago'. I have date.timezone = 'UTC' in my php.ini file, and when I call date_default_timezone_get(), or display date('T') on a web page, it says 'CDT'. The documentation on php.net for date_default_timezone_get() says it follows this order when choosing a default timezone: - Reading the timezone set using the date_default_timezone_set() function (if any) - Reading the TZ environment variable (if non empty) - Reading the value of the date.timezone ini option (if set) - Querying the host operating system (if supported and allowed by the OS) If I change the system timezone through the 'setup' GUI, and reboot the server, date('T') returns whatever I changed the system timezone to, regardless of what php.ini says. I also don't have a TZ environment variable, and I am not currently using date_default_timezone_set() anywhere in my code. Any idea what might be going on? I realize I can always override the system timezone by calling date_default_timezone_set('UTC'), but I'd rather rely on the php.ini file if possible. Thanks for the help, Dave

• Ruby: Read large data from stdout and stderr of an external process on Windows

  Greetings, all, I need to run a potentially long-running process from Ruby on Windows and subsequently capture and parse the data from the external process's standard output and error. A large amount of data can be sent to each, but I am only necessarily interested in one line at a time (not capturing and storing the whole of the output). After a bit of research, I found that the Open3 class would take care of executing the process and giving me IO objects connected to the process's standard output and error (via popen3). Open3.popen3("external-program.bat") do |stdin, out, err, thread| # Step3.profit() ? end However, I'm not sure how to continually read from both streams without blocking the program. Since calling IO#readlines on out or err when a lot of data has been sent results in a memory allocation error, I'm trying to continuously check both streams for available input, but not having much luck with any of my implementations.   I've got an ASP.NET page with a simple form. The user fills out the form with some details, uploads a document, and some processing of the file then needs to happens on the server side. My question is - what's the best approach to handling the server side processing of the files? The processing involves calling an exe. Should I use seperate threads for this? Ideally I want the user to submit the form without the web page just hanging there while the processing takes place.   I am trying to create a representation of various types of card that inherit from a generic card class and which all contain references to their owning decks. I tried re-declaring them, as suggested here, but it still won't convert to the specific card type. Would doing so be a violation of convention? Is there a better way? My question to stackoverflow is this: Can what I am trying to do be done elegantly in the .NET type system? If so, can some examples be provided?

• Is the ruby operator ||= intelligent?

  I have a question regarding the ||= statement in ruby and this is of particular interest to me as I'm using it to write to memcache. What I'm wondering is, does ||= check the receiver first to see if it's set before calling that setter, or is it literally an alias to x = x || y This wouldn't really matter in the case of a normal variable but using something like: CACHE[:some_key] ||= "Some String" could possibly do a memcache write which is more expensive than a simple variable set. I couldn't find anything about ||= in the ruby api oddly enough so I haven't been able to answer this myself. Of course I know that: CACHE[:some_key] = "Some String" if CACHE[:some_key].nil? would achieve this, I'm just looking for the most terse syntax.

I'm curious why it requires that rewind() be called. I imagine there's good reason for it, but I would have expected it to simply start iteration at whatever state it's inner iterator is in, and leave it as an option to rewind before beginning iteration. calling next() also seems to put it in a "valid" state(although it advances to the next position, suggesting it was previously at the first position). $arrayIter = new ArrayIterator(array(1,2)); $iterIter = new IteratorIterator($arrayIter); $iterIter->next(); var_dump($iterIter->valid()); Again, I'm curious why I need to call rewind(), despite the inner iterator being in a valid state.

  hi folks, i got a crazy error within that for-loop matr=realloc(matr, newmax*sizeof(matr*)); for (i=0; i<newmax; i++){ matr[i]=realloc(matr[i], newmax*sizeof(int)); } matr is a multi-dimension array: int **matr. i need to resize column and row. first line resizes column and the for-loop resizes every row. it worked fine in c. now im working on a library for lua and it crashs here. compilin' works fine as well. but calling from lua crashs with lua: malloc.c:3552: mremap_chunk: Assertion `((size + offset) & (mp_.pagesize-1)) == 0' failed. i have no damn idea since it's working fine using it in c.
