• How do I launch a WPF app from command.com. I'm getting a FontCache error.

  I know this is not ideal, but my constraint is that I have a legacy application written in Clipper. I want to launch a new, WinForms/WPF application from inside the application (to ease transition). This legacy application written in Clipper launches using: SwpRunCmd("C:\MyApp\MyBat.bat",0) The batch file contains something like this command: C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore "http://QASVR/MyApp/AppWin/MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.application#MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.application" It is launching a WinForms/WPF app that is we deploy via ClickOnce. Everything has been going well until we introduced WPF into the application. We were able to easily launch from the legacy application. Since we have introduced WPF, however, we have the following behavior. If we launch via the Clipper application first, we get an exception when launching the application. The neat thing is that whatever we launch with first determines whether the app will launch at all. So, if we launch with legacy first, it breaks right away and we can't get the app to run even if we launch with the otherwise successful URL or icon. To get it to work, we have to logout and log back in and start it from the URL or icon. If we first use the URL or the icon, we have no problem launching from the legacy application from that point forward (until we logout and come back in). One other piece of information is that we are able to simulate the problem in the following fashion. If we enter a command prompt using "cmd.exe" and execute a statement to launch from a URL, we are successful. If, however, we enter a command prompt using "command.com" and we execute that same statement, we experience the breaking behavior. We assume it is because the legacy application in Clipper uses the equivalent of command.com to create the shell to spawn the other app. We have tried a bunch of hacks like having command.com run cmd.exe or psexec and then executing, but nothing seems to work. We have some ideas for workarounds (like making the app launch on startup so we force the successful launch from a URL, making all subsequent launches successful), but they all are sub-optimal even though we have a great deal of control over our workstations. To reduce the chance that this is related to permissions, we have given the launching account administrative rights (as well as non-administrative rights in case that made a difference). Any ideas would be greatly-appreciate. Like I said, we have some work arounds, but I would love to avoid them. Thanks!

• CC.NET + SVN : Server certificate issue

  I am trying to setup Continuous Integration in our office. Being a puny little developer I am facing this supposedly infamous problem: " Source control operation failed: svn: OPTIONS of 'https://trunkURL': Server certificate verification failed: issuer is not trusted" So I tried the following solution - Run CC.NET service (server running as win service) using a domain account (rather than default LOCAL SYSTEMS) and accept cert permanently using command prompt under that user by using svn log/list on the repo. Doesn't help :(. • Can I use a cheap inverter for my laptop?

  I'm going to travel in a car this summer. It would be very nice if I could charge my laptop using the cigarette lighter. Because my computer is from Apple, there's no way to directly connect the two, therefore I need an inverter that provides 120V alternating current. There are many different models, ranging from very cheap to really expensive. The wave forms are: (from most expensive to cheapest) sine modified sine trapezoid square Can I use just any inverter or does it have to be a sine inverter? If so, what happens to my computer in case I use the wrong one. The laptop is a MacBook witch needs 60W.

• Should I keep my ex-employer's data?

  Following my brief reign as System Monkey, I am now faced with a dilemma: I did successfully create a backup and a test VM, both on my laptop, as no computer at work had enough free disk space. I didn't delete the backup yet, as it's still the only one of its kind in the company's history. The original is running on a hard drive in continuous use since 2006. There is now only one person left at the company, who knows what a backup is, and they're unlikely to hire someone else, for reasons very closely related to my departure. Last time I tried to talk to them about the importance of backups, they thought I was threatening them. Should I keep it? Pros: I get to save people from their own stupidity (the unofficial sysadmin motto, as far as I know) I get to say "I told you so" when they come begging for help, and feel good about it I get to say nice things about myself on my next job interview Nice clean conscience Bonus rep with the appropriate deities Cons: Legal problems: even if I do help them out with it, they might just sue me for keeping it anyway, although given the circumstances I think I have a good case Legal problems: given the nature of the job and their security, if something leaks, I'm a likely target for retaliation Legal problems: whatever else I didn't think about I need more space for porn. • Sharepoint Central Administration stuck / high CPU usage

  I'm using WSS 3 and I recently added a new web application to my SharePoint Server. After adding it, I wasn't able to open the Central Administration site. I also noticed that there was a w3wp.exe error (Event ID 1000) in the Event Viewer. The situation now is that the w3wp.exe process is hovering around 50% CPU usage continuously. I installed a program called IIS Peek, and it shows continuous GET requests on the Central Administration site; this happens even if I stop the Central Administration site in IIS. The IP addresses identified in the GET request is my workstation, which is what I used to attempt to access Central Administration after I created the new web application. Can someone explain what's going on and how I might fix it? It seems as if my computer tried to access Central Administration and then it hung, but the page requests that were happening at the time are somehow continuing over and over again. So my two problems are the inability to access Central Administration, and the CPU Usage of w3wp.exe, which I'm assuming are two symptoms of the same problem. I'd like to know if there's anything I can do besides restarting IIS, because we have clients accessing other sites on this server. Thanks.

• how to diagnose a hard system seizure? Dell+Ubuntu

  I've got Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Vostro 420 desktop, a little over a year old, which I use for plain vanilla work stuff (email, web, terminal, text editor). Every now and then, at totally random times, it completely freezes on me. Hard. Mouse and keyboard stop working, cursor stops blinking, clock stops moving. All I can do is hold down the power button on the front of the box to shut it off. Sometimes it happens after several months of continuous uptime; sometimes it happens a few minutes after a reboot, while all I've done is open a terminal to look at log files, or maybe firefox to do a google search. Each time, there is nothing at all in /var/log/messages at the time of the crash. This makes it seem like a hardware problem, and indeed a few months ago I opened the box and wiggled everything and the problem went away for a while. But now it's back. I went in and checked everything, took out each RAM card and reseated. No luck. I ran all the system diagnostics (the long version) and everything passed with flying colors. Something is messed up in this box, but without any useful logs or failed tests, how in the world am I going to find it? And of course, Dell's not gonna help me cause I went and replaced Windows with Ubuntu. What steps would you take next to track down this problem?

  Since the old days ISA and now TMG have had several great features that I often want to deploy to my customers because of the enhanced functionality and security, but often the cost of an additinal server HW, Windows Server, and TMG license is too much to justify when compaired to a $300-500 appliance. Are there other gateway firewalls that can perform one or more of these application layer features: pre-auth incoming http traffic against AD/LDAP before sending packets to internal server (forms auth or basic creds popup)? read host headers of incoming http traffic (even on https) to a single public IP and route packets to different internal servers based on that host header?

• Windows VPN always disconnects after < 3 minutes, only from my network

  First, this problem has existed for almost two years. Until serverfault was born, I pretty much gave up on solving it - but now, hope is reborn! I've set up a Windows 2003 server as a domain controller and VPN server at a remote office. I am able to connect to and work over the VPN from every windows client I've tried, including XP, Vista, and Windows 7 without issue, from at least five different networks (corporate and home, domain and non.) It works fine from all of them. However, whenever I connect from clients on my home network, the connection drops (silently) after 3 minutes or less. After a short while, it will eventually tell me the connection has dropped and attempt to redial/reconnect (if I've configured the client that way.) If I reconnect, the connection will re-establish and appear to work correctly, but again will silently drop, this time after a seemingly shorter time period. These are not intermittent drops. It happens every single time, in exactly the same way. The only variable is how long the connection survives. It doesn't matter what type of traffic I send. I can sit idle, send continuous pings, RDP, transfer files, all of that at once - it makes no difference. The result is always the same. Connected for a few minutes, then silent death. Since I doubt anyone has experienced this exact situation, what steps can I take to troubleshoot my evanescing VPN?

• 4.4.1 Timeout in 10 minute intervals SMTP on batch email jobs

  I am running a job that uses SMTP and it can run in excess of an hour, emailing the entire time. It's not my code but a workflow based app so I just get a form to configure the mail server, subj, msg, etc and can't see it's implementation. I know it is .NET and SmtpClient. I have been seeing 4.4.1 timeouts every 10 minutes being reported by the application as the response from the server. The # of emails in those 10 minute sessions are variable, between 100 and below 150 which leads me to ask about the 10 minute timeout time specifically. I have found there are several exchange properties (though I don't know what version they are running) that set timeout limits. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232205%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx) Would those values for ConnectionInactivityTimeOut and ConnectionTimeout be the controlling the timeouts? and finally I would like to ask if exchange considers the consistent connection(s) it kept receiving from the same source as one continuous connection and cause the timeout each 10 minutes and cause the timeout? I am using a static ip of the mail server. Thanks if anyone can shed any light on my problem. EDIT - It is my belief that the library is just keeping the connections around and isn't wrapped in any cleanup code or using statement. That said, I still haven't made any progress on this issue in the last year and just requeue the failed ones as I see them.

• What can I do with a home server?

  I have an old 700 Mhz Pentium III at home running Windows 2000 Server, with a home router set up to pass incoming requests to it and a DynDNS account set up so it's easy to find. Right now I'm using it for a number of things: Shared folders + backup inside the home network Shared Printer inside the home network Domain Controller, just because I feel like it and because it's useful to me as practice to keep those "enterprise" administration skills. Web Server FTP remote access for my files. I abandoned this for security reasons, but it's still worth leaving visible. Remote Desktop in to the home network (thinking about adding VPN service) SVN repository MySQL - Will be moving to SQL Server 2008 Standard soon. After I upgrade my wife's laptop from home to pro later this year it will also become a domain controller It's the only place I still have access to Internet Explorer 6 any more without setting up a new virtual machine, so I use it for testing code with that browser. The question is: What else could I be doing with this machine? Update Additional ideas based on the suggestions: Media Server/DVR Build server PBX SSH Proxy Server Continuous Integration Server Personal OpenID Provider Update2 Just a note that this server was recently upgraded to an Atom330 with 2 GB ram and bigger hard drive. For all that's slow for a "modern" cpu, it should still be much faster than the old Pentium III and the expected power savings should make the upgrade essentially free over the course of the next year or two. Also, it's now running Windows Server 2008.

• Windows Explorer and UAC: run elevated

  I am profoundly annoyed by UAC and switch it off for my admin user wherever I can. Yet, there are situations where I can't - especially if those are machines not under my continuous administration. In this case, I am always challenged with the task of traversing directories using my administrative user via the Windows Explorer where regular users do not have "read" permissions. The possible two approaches to this problem so far: change the ACLs to the directory in question to include my user (Windows conveniently offers the Continue button in the "You don't currently have permissions to access this folder" dialog. This obviously sucks since more often than not I do not want to change ACLs but just look into the folder's contents use an elevated cmd.exe prompt along with a bunch of command line utilities - this usually takes a lot of time when browsing through large and / or complex directory structures What I would love to see would be a way to run Windows Explorer in elevated mode. I have yet to find out how to do so. But other suggestions solving this problem in an unobtrusive way without changing the entire system's configuration (and preferably without the need for downloading / installing anything) are very welcome, too. I have seen this post with a suggestion for altering HKCR - interesting, but it changes the behavior for all users, which I am not allowed to do in most situations.   I have a php file that sends mail using the mail() function. The problem is one of the forms sends to a domain that is registerred on my server while having the mail handled on a different server. Postfix looks locally only. When it doesn't find the email address is rejects the message. How can I configure postfix to send mail to all domains through the internet and not locally? Update Ok. So it wasn't a postfix issue at all. I simply needed to turn off mail to that domain from the command line. For anyone that needs that command it is (at least on my system): /usr/local/psa/bin/domain --update example.com -mail_service false

• MS Access Query Criteria Issue

  Currently I have a MS Access database query that has a field named FedEXDetTotal that totals 9 FedEX charge fields. I have another field that is from our inhouse system called "Total Charge". This is just a normal number field. I have created another Field in this query Diff: [FedEXDetTotal]-[Total Charge] This tells me the difference between the Fedex charge and what we actually charged. Everything works OK with this, but when I try to put the criteria 5 for the Diff field, when I run the query, I get a prompt saying "Enter Parameter Value FedEXDetTotal". Why is Access doing this? How do I get around this? I'm trying to start out with something simple(5), but what I really want is [Forms]![Dis].[txtbox_Diff].

  I have a server in which SCO 5.x is installed. I have several thin clients which were supplied from our head office. Those thin clients have linux pre-installed in them. When we tried to connect to our SCO server, we have found out that the thin client does not support SCO terminal type. So the program (Which is written in Oracle forms) is not working correctly. Lots of function keys stopped working and screen also not getting refreshed correctly. Hence we decided to use Ubuntu Live USB keys in thin clients. Now the problem is how can we change the terminal type to SCO in ubuntu ? Means I want it in the text terminal (Alt+Ctrl+F1,F2...) (Not in xterm...graphical terminal emulators). Does ubuntu support SCO terminal type ?

• How do I make my "volume up" more powerful in Win7?

  My volume up button raises the volume by 1%. Its also not a button, it's a weird 'touch' thing which is really really terrible. If I want to lower the volume, I have to awkwardly rub it for a while. If it were to decrease by 5% or 10% it would be a lot better. Can this be set somewhere in Windows/Keyboard settings? I got close to a solution with Autohotkey, where I could do this: a::Send {Volume_Up 5} which would send the volume up command five times, however when I assign it to the volume key, it forms an endless loop since the Send command sends Volume_Up and parses it at the same time. • MS Access ADP front end and SQL Server back end for field data collection?

  I am an anthropologist. I am going to the field and will use a netbook to collect survey data. The survey forms will need to allow me to enter data into multiple tables, search tables, allow subforms, and be fast enough to not slow down my interview. I have considered storing the data in a SQL Server Express 2008 R2 server (there will be a lot of data) while using a Microsoft Access data project as a front end. To cut down the number of steps required to collect and store data, I'm considering using the netbook for both data storage and collection (after reading this article about SQL Server on a netbook). My questions are: (1) Is there a simpler solution that is also gratis (gratis because I already have a MS Access license from my workplace, and SQL Server Express is, obviously, free)? (2) Does my idea to store and collect data using the netbook make sense? Thank you.

• Site Action Button Missing

  I have a Moss 2007 site collection which was running smoothly. However, after moving to Forms Authentication connected to Active Directory neither my Farm Administrator account nor the 2 Site collection administrators can get past the site homepage. There is no Site Action buttons availabe. When I log into CA witht he Farm Administrator account the Site Action button exists there so I suspect its something to do with the permissions to the site application. I have tried to connect directly to the settings URL http://mysite/_layouts/settings.aspx etc but get the ususal error Error: Access Denied Current User You are currently signed in as: xxxx (Farm Administrator Account) Sign in as a different user Request access I get the same error when logging in with the site collection admin accounts. Ive also checked to make sure that the sites are not locked out.

• Rendering a frame is producing noise from speakers in Windows and Linux

  When any hardware accelerated application is rendering a frame (or many of them) a very short noise is coming from my speakers. This can be a game, a WebGL application or XBMC. When the application/game is rendering many frames per second (like most of them do) the noise is a continuous buzzing that gets higher pitched with higher framerates. This applies to Linux and Windows, so I'd assume it's a hardware problem. The current hardware in the PC is: CPU: Core2Quad Q9550 GPU: Radeon HD 5770 RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 Motherboard: Asus P5QLD PRO PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 530W Screen and speakers: Old 720p LCD TV connected via VGA and aux cable Muting the TV stops the noise, muting Windows doesn't. I tried replacing the PSU first (used a Tagan 700W PSU before) because I thought it was a power problem. It wasn't. I tried replacing the motherboard (used a ASUS P5B SE before) next because I thought it was a sound card problem. It wasn't. I tried the GPU in a different PC because I thought it was a broken graphics card. It worked perfectly fine in the other PC. I thought it might be interference, but moving the audio cable around changes absolutely nothing. I tried using an HDMI cable instead and that did work, but is not an option since my TV has only one HDMI input and I need that for my PS3.

• ADFS http login failure not re-requesting credentials

  We have ADFS working with HTTP (401) login. If a user types their password incorrectly, ADFS barfs and requires that the browser be closed, rather than asking the user for to attempt to log in again. Reprompting for user credentials is the typical behavior with other web servers (even IIS). This appears to be an artifact of setting the HTTP session, but other HTTP-login applications dont behave this way. We are having additional issues now because some users are saving that password, and its causing them account lockouts because the browsers do not realize they need to update saved credentials. Anyone know of a workaround? Wed rather not enable forms login if possible.

  Does anyone know of a Firefox plugin that would enable tab-completion (or some other key sequence like Alt-L) of items in drop-down lists in web forms? e.g. ou<TAB>in<TAB>s<TAB> for 'OurCompany - Internal Support' Vimperator's hints mode makes it very ergonomic to focus the drop-down list with a key sequence like f13 but the keyboard interface to the drop-down list still sucks. I very frequently have to pick items from a very long list with very long common prefixes among the entries (e.g. 30-40 starting with OurCompany -), which renders both the built-in keyboard interface and the mouse pretty slow and unergonomic. I basically want readline support for filling webforms!

• Server Hosting + AWS

  Since my dedicated servers are hosted at a "normal" hosting service, I wonder if there is a really cheap way to extend the server farm with AWS instances. E.g. it seems to be a effient and flexible solution with data storage and ressources for ocassional data processing, too. However, it might be very in-efficient to mix two data centres and transfering data from current webhoster to amazon and vice-versa. In my case, the traffic for this continuous data exchange seems to be expensive and the delay for moving the data back to the hoster leads into a lack or delay. How are best practises for mixing non-aws and aws systems? E.g.: How to move the hosters data to aws as log file storage to run urchin analysis and/or port the log file data into a bigtable for exhausting analysis there. After working with the data: how to bring it back to the hoster and use the data with the webservers there? I am not going to move all the server farm to amazon, only "separate" parts or tasks if the transfer/exchange does not lead to increased cost.
