Avoid copying of data between user and kernel space and vice-versa

Hello, I am developing a active messaging protocol for parallel computation that replaces TCP/IP. My goal is to decrease the latency of a packet. Since the environment is a LAN, i can replace TCP/IP with simpler protocol to reduce the packet latency. I am not writing any device driver and i am just trying to replace the TCP/IP stack with something simpler. Now I wanted to avoid copying of a packet's data from user space to kernel space and vice-versa. I heard of the mmap(). Is it the best way to do this? If yes, it will be nice if you can give links to some examples. I am a linux newbie and i really appreciate your help.. Thank you... Thanks, Bala

MySQL indexes: how do they work?

I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

RSpec: Expectation on model's not working while testing controller

I'm trying to write a functional test. My test looks as following: describe PostsController do it "should create a Post" do Post.should_receive(:new).once post :create, { :post => { :caption => "ThePost", :category => "MyCategory" } } end end My PostsController (a part of it actually) looks as following: PostController < ActiveRecord::Base def create @post = Post.new(params[:post]) end end Running the test I'm always receiving a failure, which says that the Post class expected :new but never got it. Still, the actual post is created. I'm a newbie to RSpec. Am I missing something?

Silverlight datagrid don't show any data with anonymous query RIA services

I have an anonymous linq query that I bind to a datagrid, when I debug it brings alright the data but it doesn't show in the datagrid, I suspect that the request to RIA services isn't completed before I bound it to the datagrid. I could use the LoadOperation<() Completed event. But it only works with Defined Entities so how can I do that? MongoDB - how to join parent and child products by reference

my mongo collection stores products. There are two product types: child and parent. Parent product holds array of its child as reference. How does this main domain have a CNAME record?

I was under the impression that only subdomains could have CNAME records: main domains need to define all their own records. However, apt-get.com seems to have only a CNAME record. How to select all options from a drop list in php / mysql

Thanks to stackoverflow.com's frienly experts I've managed to create my first php + mysql application. The code searches a mysql database for last names and cities. The choices are made through two drop lists like these: Choose city: All cities Liverpool Manchester Choose last name: All last names Lennon Gallagher The code would return eg. all the Lennons living in Liverpool. However, I haven't been able to make the options "All cities" and "All last names" to work so that the code would return eg. all the Lennons living in any city or all the people living in Liverpool. So, how can that be done? IE 6 and 7 background inheritance problem, how do I solve this?

When I'm trying to create a rounded shaded box it works fine on FF and IE8 but on IE6 and IE7, any div inside the box gets the last background but if you set that all divs on the level where there should not be a background have background:none it doesn't show any background on the level that comes before *The code is pointing to live images on Image Shack so you can save and run that it will work normally on Firefox but you can see what happen on IE6/7. AS3 Memory management when instantiating extended classes

I'm developing an AS3 application which has some memory leaks I can't find, so I'd like to ask some newbie questions about memory management. Imagine I have a class named BaseClass, and some classes that extend this one, such as ClassA, ClassB, etc. I declare a variable: myBaseClass:BaseClass = new ClassA(); After a while, I use it to instantiate a new object: myBaseClass = new ClassB(); some time after myBaseClass = new ClassC(); and the same thing keeps happening every x millis, triggered by a timer. Is there any memory problem here? Are the unused instances correctly deleted by the garbage collector? Thanks!

Creating New Objects in JavaScript

I'm a relatively newbie to object oriented programming in JavaScript, and I'm unsure of the "best" way to define and use objects in JavaScript. I've seen the "canonical" way to define objects and instantiate a new instance, as shown below. function myObjectType(property1, propterty2) { this.property1 = property1, this.property2 = property2 } // now create a new instance var myNewvariable = new myObjectType('value for property1', 'value for property2'); But I've seen other ways to create new instances of objects in this manner: var anotherVariable = new someObjectType({ property1: "Some value for this named property", property2: "This is the value for property 2" }); I like how that second way appears - the code is self documenting. But my questions are: Which way is "better"? Can I use that second way to instantiate a variable of an object type that has been defined using the "classical"way of defining the object type with that implicit constructor? If I want to create an array of these objects, are there any other considerations? Thanks in advance.

How get <body> element from the html which one have as a string

Hello! I have a stupid problem. An jQuery.ajax request return me a full HTML text as a string. I receive such response in an case of error on the server. The server give me an error description which I want to place inside of the corresponding place of my current page. So now the question: I have a string contains full HTML document (which is not an XML!!! see <hr> element inside). I need to have for example only BODY part as a jQuery object. Then I could append it to the corresponding part of my page. using getScript to import plugin on page using multiple versions of jQuery

I am developing an app on a page that uses jQuery 1.2.6, but I would like to use jQuery 1.4.2 for my app. I really don't like to use multiple versions of jQuery like this but the copy on the page (1.2.6) is something I have no control over. For a while, everything worked fine. However, I decided to want to use a jQuery plugin in a separate file. I tested it and it acted funny. After some experimentation, I found out that the plugin was using the old version of jQuery, when I wanted it to use the new version. Does anyone know how to import and run a js file from the context within the function wrapping the code in myStuff.js? In case this matters to anyone, here is how I know the plugin is using the old version, and what I did to try to solve the problem: I made a file called test.js, consisting of this line: alert($.fn.jquery); I tried referencing the file in a script tag the way external Javascript is usually included, below myStuff.js, and it came up as 1.2.6, like I expected. I then got rid of that script tag and put this line in myStuff.js: $.getScript("test.js"); and it still came back as 1.2.6. That wasn't a big surprise -- according to jQuery's documentation, scripts included that way are executed in the global context. I then tried doing this instead: var testFn = $.proxy($.getScript, this); testFn("test.js"); and it still came back as 1.2.6. After some tinkering, I found out that the "this" keyword referred to the window, which I assume means the global context. I am looking for something to put in place of "this" to refer to the context of the enclosing function, or some other way to make the code in the file run from the enclosing function. I noticed that if I copy and paste the code, it works fine, but it is a big plugin that is used in many places, and I would prefer not to clutter up my file with their code. I am out of ideas. Does anyone else know how to do this?

Mahout Recommendations on Binary data

Hi, I'm a newbie to mahout.My aim is to produce recommendations on binary user purchased data.So i applied item-item similarity model in computing top N recommendations for movie lens data assuming 1-3 ratings as a 0 and 4-5 ratings as a 1.Then i tried evaluating my recommendations with the ratings in the test-data but hardly there have been two or three matches from my top 20 recommendations to the top rated items in test data and no match for most users. So are my recommendations totally bad by nature or do i need to go for a different measure for evaluating my recommendations ? Please help me ! Thanks in advance. Pranay, 2nd yr ,UG student.

EC2 Apache Server not reflecting changes to PHP files

We're running a Laravel application on an Amazon EC2 server with Apache installed. I've noticed on multiple occasions, that the server doesn't respond to changes in PHP files, even after restarting Apache. This is really strange, and has been sticking its head out more frequently these days. Is it possible Apache is caching the PHP files somewhere? Opcode caching perhaps?

Is ORM (Linq, Hibernate...) really that useful?

I have been playing with some LINQ ORM (LINQ directly to SQL) and I have to admit I like its expressive powers . For small utility-like apps, It also works quite fast: dropping a SQL server on some surface and you're set to linq away. For larger apps however, the DAL never was that big of an issue to me to setup, nor maintain, and more often than not, once it was set, all the programming was not happening there anyway... My, honest - I am an ORM newbie - question : what is the big advantage of ORM over writing a decent DAL by hand? Sendmail.mc: alias all incoming e-mails to one account

I need to alias all mail coming from another SMTP server to this one account "myinbox". The system in question is to receive all e-mail on the domain, if that's any help. http://william.shallum.net/random-notes/sendmailredirectallmailfordevelopment is a template for the beginning of a solution, but that routes everything (including outgoing and internal mail) to that one account, and trying to understand how these R rules work is making my head spin. I think the answer is in sendmail.mc rather than any Procmail configuration. So I think what I generally don't want the filter to do is: Interfere w/any outgoing e-mail Interfere w/any internal e-mail Sometimes some cron job causes "root" to mail to "root". I don't want these to go to myinbox. Cause infinite loops Who does? Bounce messages and any DSNs come to mind. I'm running Sendmail 8.13.1 and Procmail 3.22.

Hosting services on ubuntu server VM

I've got OSX Server running on a macbook, and I'm looking to run an ubuntu server VM on it via Parallels. I'm thinking about hosting all my apache inside linux, and possibly some other services. I'm curious what a viable config would be, having not done this before. I need to do bridged network right? How do I direct web traffic to the VM instead of OSX? Haven't got my head wrapped around how this works yet so any help would be appreciated.

How do I get detailed information about what happens during logon

Due to my IT department leaving I am now responsible for all our IT systems. I now have several problems to get my head around and fix. I run Active Directory on windows server 2003 and use group policy to apply settings etc. Recently we have had some windows 7 clients added to our network, these are having awful problems with our logon scripts and drive mappings. For the most part my XP clients are working without a problem. What I want to know is what is going on during logon, as running the logon scripts after I have logged on often works. Does anyone know of a way to get detailed log information of what is happening before and during logon. Thanks for your help and any suggestions you have for tracking down the source of these problems.

jQuery gallery scrolling effect with ease

So, I got this page from a friend and I think the gallery is amazingly done. Too bad it's in Flash ; http://selected.com/en/#/collection/homme/ Now, I'm trying to replicate the effect with jQuery. I've made all the loco searches on google one could think of. Zooming the picture is not a problem, the problem lies within the scrolling, how they come together at the ease part. I'm looking for solution in how to make the thumbnail animate when you scroll the page, they drag behind and infront of each other in a very subtle way - I've got (With a lot of help from Whirl3d in the jQuery-irc channel) this for the scrollup/down part of the mouse but the scrolling goes haywire; I Thought I post it here where I've come many times to get answers to a lot of questions and code-errors. How to navigate through folders without opening a new buffer in Emacs?

(I don't know if it is important, but I am using Aquamacs - and yeah, I am a newbie) When I want to open a file I use C-x C-f and usually just chose my home folder. From there I go clicking on folders until I find the file I want. I really don't like thought that each new file I open creates a new buffer. This is especially annoying because I am using Aquamacs with the window (tab) option enabled. I know I could simply get rid of the window option, but I quite like it, except of course for when I open a file and a zillion tabs are created. So my question is: is there a way to disable the new buffer creation when "navigating" through folders? Thanks :)

Hey, I am making some stuff in Objective-C++... And I must say that I am a total newbie when it comes to the Objective-C part... I don't really want to learn it, I kinda just need it for accessing a few Mac APIs (ObjC is such a dumb language). So - compiling with g++ -x objective-c++ - and I somehow keep getting this warning: XXX may not respond to YYY First it was with a NSScreen, now it is with a NSWindow: NSWindow may not respond to +initWithContentRect:styleMask:backing:defer: I saw somewhere that I should cast it to id, but didn't work, throwing absolutely cryptic errors... So - WHAT does this warning actually mean and HOW am I supposed to make it stop?

Mass editing videos on Ubuntu?

Hi, I'm trying to add a watermark and a credits image to all of my old videos. I downloaded them off YouTube so they are all flv (H.264?). Is there some software that will allow me do simple edits in batches? I know a little bit of Python and tried looking at some of the library but they all seem like overkill (and way above my head). So is there a solution besides getting some software and going through all my videos and doing it manually? They are all mostly the same length, but it would be nice to specify a relative position for my credits. e.g. show a static image for 10 seconds when the video is at 95%
