• Virtual PC - Display Issue with Ubuntu Server

  Hi Everyone, I just did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 9.04 in Virtual PC on the Windows 7 RC, and it seems to be having a bit of an issue with the virtual machine's display adapter. I've tried setting a VGA flag in the GRUB configuration to no avail. This is a guess, but I think it has something to do with the color console mode that gets enabled by default at boot time. The system starts booting just fine (i.e. the console looks "normal" when I'm asked to enter an LVM passphrase, etc.), but then the display goes wonky after a few seconds and I end up with this. Typing commands in bash works just fine: it's not like the system is frozen or anything, I just can't see anything that I type. The console looks exactly the way it does in the image below.

• Site Server 3 user blacklisting

  I doubt that anyone even remembers Site Server 3 - most of those that had any contact with it will have spent the last decade trying to forget. But, on the off-chance that someone out there does remember it, perhaps you also remember what can be done to un-blacklist a user who has been blacklisted as a result of supplying incorrect login details 3 times? I have a user that's been blacklisted that I really really need to recover, and yet I can find no way to do this. (I'm not even able to figure out where the blacklist is stored - I'd be quite prepared to nuke it if that's what it takes).

• Team Foundation Server 2010 and Sharepoint/WSS3.0

  As I'm new to Team Foundation Server, this may seem a bit of a daft question but I have been tasked with installing TFS2010. What I want to know is, do I have to have a full version of MOSS 2007 installed to build a project dashboard for TFS or can I get away with just using WSS 3.0 that comes with TFS? Having looked through the docs for TFS, I get the idea that I have to have a full Sharepoint installation somewhere. Though I'd like this to be clarified if possible. Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes

  I just upgraded my Ubuntu server from 9.04 to 9.10 and after about 10 minutes it locks up. It won't respond to ping, can't ssh in and the terminal doesn't accept keyboard input. It does not have X installed. I then reformatted and installed it from scratch with the same results. There are two hard drives, the first is for the OS and the second is for media. The second has not changed, it is an ext3 formatted drive with one partition. I stopped random services (samba, ushare, transmission-daemon) to see if they were causing the issue, but it still locked up. I did a watch "dmesg|tail" until it locked up, but I didn't see anything. How can I troubleshoot this further? I don't want to downgrade. Machine specs: Dell Dimension 3000 Pentium 4 @3GHz 512M RAM

• HP Server bios boot delay

  I'm just going to throw this out there in case anyone else has run accross this... I have an HP DL320 G5p that had the motherboard replaced due to a faulty NIC port. After several calls to HP, two motherboard replacements, PCI riser card replacements, Processor replacement, and power supply replacement, the server takes approx. 10 minutes before it boots into the BIOS. It then boots up with no issues. We've run the HP smart start cd and performed the system tests and everything passed. All firmware has also been upgraded to the latest as well. Has anyone else seen this and found a fix? I am still working with HP, but there seems to be a struggle on their part to figure this out, so I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this and found a fix - thanks...

  How can I change my SQL Server 2008 license? I have the Enterprise Edition installed with a 90-day key and it will expire on 7 days. Two months ago, I purchased the final one but I don't know how to install/change to the new one. Is there a legal way to do it or I have to uninstall completely the application and reinstall it with the new license?   I have a 4 node cluster, 1 subscriber and 3 publishers, all running SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The intention is that if the subscriber goes down, we can use one of the publishers to quickly build up its replacement. Our testing reveals a problem though: the subcriber databases all have Not For Replication set to Yes on the identity columns so that they can maintain the identity set in the subscriber. This causes a problem when they become subscribers because now we don't have identity insert functionality: we get a primary key error. Any way to "promote" a subscriber to publisher?

  We have installed PHPMyAdmin on a windows machine running IIS 7.0. We are able to connect to MySQL using command-line, But we are not able to connect using PHPMyAdmin. • How to get Windows Server 2008 VM to use multiple cores

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors.   So I have this little server that I've been working on as a hobby. But due to changes in living arrangements I have move and it won't have access to a wired lan. So I need to install a wireless adapter i had sitting around. But most tutorials I have run across are either out dated, or about ubuntu desktop and talk about things using a GUI. So my question is firstly is there a utility for identifying and downloading drivers for new hardware. that would save my having this problem in the future. If not, how do i go about installing said wireless NIC? ~N

• Windows Server 2008R2 IIS7.5, Requests getting 401 status

  We have a web site running in windows server 2008r2 iis7.5 and we are seeing several errors reported from our global error handler saying that "Request Timed Out". I matched up one to the IIS log file and see the request took 135116 (presumably milliseconds) had an sc-status of 401 an sc-sub0status of 0 and an sc-win32-status of 64. 2 requests failed in these way but lots of surrounding requests (1979 successful requests vs 2 fails) for the same user went through perfectly fine- with the same cs-username which makes a 401 seem a little odd. The target of the requests is an ASP.Net web service's web method called by the .net client library- it's called a lot of times per user (3 times per second) to keep a page updated. We're getting some users reportng seeing a freezing effect and I think this may be the cause, any ideas? Peter

• Run Python Server at Startup

  Hello, I've got a few Python based servers that I need to run, and would like them to start automatically when I start my Ubuntu Server box. What is the best way to execute them like this? I was hoping I could write a Bash script and use Screen to get them running in the background, where I can check on them every now and then, but where as echo screen -d -m python works just fine, echo screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py` doesn't, with no error messages. Is that something to do with the spaces? Even though I did surround it with backquotes? I also tried: WEB="screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py`" echo $WEB As a way of escaping the spaces, but no luck. What's Bash scripting way to do this? And, once the Bash script works, where can I put it to make it execute on startup?

• Assign PowerShell script to run at startup using PowerShell on Window Server 2012

  I'm trying to write a PowerShell script that will run when a Windows 2012 instance is created on AWS using the configuration tools provided by AWS. My problem is that I want to change the name of the machine once it has started up, restart the machine and carry on set up process after. The main reason for this is that one of the applications, Boundary, installed in the set up process takes the name of the server when first installed. It is then doesn't seem possible to change it's name in their portal. Ideally I would have two PowerShell scripts, one to start the set up process, initialised through AWS and another that runs the first time the machine restarts. This second script would ideally be queued to run on the next start by the initial set up script. So I guess my question are: Is this possible? How would I go about doing this. My Google foo is letting me down here so any answers would be appreciated.

• Having trouble getting startup scripts to work in Server 2003

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am having trouble getting my startup scripts to run correctly on the domain I am administering. Before anyone gets upset and says "go read xxx article from microsoft",... I have. I am simply missing something or not understanding it properly. I understand how to assign the script, what I am curious about is where exactly it should be placed in the Windows folder structure. I have been able to get them to work by creating a share folder called "scripts" and pointing to that exact unc pathname IE \servername\scripts\xxx.bat. However, I would like to do it properly, would someone please tell me where they should be placed in Win2003 server, and what the path name should be when assigning a group policy to do something that applies to computer specific properties? Your assistance is very much appreciated by a junior admin trying to learn some new tricks!

• Problem installing Windows Server 2008 R2 on Xen 3.0

  Hi there folks, I've been googling this for a few hours now and not really getting anywhere. We have a Xen 3.0 host which I'm trying to install a copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition onto as a guest OS - but the install hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen when it starts running the installer. Is this is a known issue with the version of Xen we're running (I know it's positively ancient)? Is there a workaround for it at all? We've successfully got a great number of vanilla 2008 servers running on it, it appears it's an issue specific to R2. Bryan

• Windows 7 Laptops "unable to find logon server"

  In the school I work in we have a large number (500+) of Windows 7 laptops on a Meru Wireless system and Server 2008 R2 Servers. We have an appalingly large failure rate where a student or staff member tries to logon (to the laptop joined to the domain) and is met by "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request". I've seen this question and this one and while removing and re-joining to the domain works, it's highly time consuming, irritating, and we (I) have more important things to concentrate on. The only MS KB article I can find is regarding a read-only domain controller (which ours isn't) and I'm at my wits end. Ultimately, is there a definitve cause and answer to this or am I stuck removing and re-joining the laptops?

  hello guys i have a exchange server running but there is a problem. when i use the web access and i click new email ad i click on the paperclip(to add a attachment) i select a file and then i click Add to upload it. but when my Oulook Web Access hangs its stays loading 10 or 20 seconds. and then it ask for my login again my username and password. when i fill my username and password in again the same happens its stays loading for 10 or 20 seconds and then it ask again for my username and password. can somebody help me on this pleas.

• Set security on pattern of sub folders (Server 2003)

  I have a folder structure similar to the one shown below these paragraphs. How do I change security on every 'Photos' folder without clicking through each individually in Windows Explorer? There are about 50 top level folders (Bob, Jim, Eva, etc, etc) which have the same layout of folders inside. I am keen for any suggestions, either scripting or GUI. I am on Windows Server 2003. Cheap/free method would be good, as the company is part of a registered charity. Ideally I would like to do this via DFS path. E.G. \\mycompany.local\Shared\Staff\Bob\ Thanks for reading. • Temp files created in every folder in Windows Server 2003

  So we have some folders which are shared over the AD Domain (Windows Server 2003). It was just noticed that in 2 of those folders (which contain only Excel and Word files), whenever a file is opened and closed, the temp file which was opened corresponding to that file still remains. Apparently, this's been going on for the past couple of years (which has led to an insane amount of temp files in each folder/subfolder under those shared folders). These shared folders are under the D:drive and not C: drive. There is only one group (containing 2 users) who access the said folders. I cannot understand if this has to do with the settings/permissions for the User/Group/Individual Client machine. For now, I have manually deleted all the temp files from each folder/subfolder. While this is not critical at the moment, I'd still like to clear this up. Also, it takes an additional fraction of a second to open folders that contains more than 10,000 temp files.   Hello, I am new to colocation. I am looking for a good place to host my server that would have around 5-10 Source Servers (Team Fortress 2). I am looking at maybe around 90 players at a time for now, players coming from all over the United States Could I get more info on what I am suppose to look for exactly? Would it be correct for me to get a 100Mb/s line and does 100Mb/s line in the following example actually be 100Mb/s upload bandwidth? Example: package 4 of FDC's services: http://www.fdcservers.net/server_colocation.php also I want to get something unmettered. I do not want to have to ever worry about going over some bandwidth limit or any DDOS attacks killing me. And if anyone has any other recommendations as to what network configurations I should get or any other good colocation providers that are cheap in price, I would REALLY appreciate the help. Thanks

• Logging off does not kill process in Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows Server 2003(Enterprise, SP2). My understanding was that any process created by a user will be terminated when the user loggs off the account. But its not happening. I login via Administrator account. Start a simple java process and logoff. But the process is not killed. Is there any configuration for this or something? I am mostly a software programmer and not much in to servers and so I am stuck. I found out that while logging off, 1) Win32 is supposed to send a CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT to all processes started by that user. 2) JVM is supposed to handle this event and terminate the VM. But I can't understand why my java process is not killed when i logoff. Any idea!!!

• I can access \\server via explorer but a program wont

  From ServerA I can access \\ServerB\Telephony\Files\abcdefgh.pdf using windows explorer. From the same ServerA when I try to access the same file on ServerB using a program (a program that imports files from csv file) I get "File Not Found" error. On \\ServerB\Telephony\ the Share is on and I added the service account that I used to log in to ServerA. I am clueless. Please suggest. (oh, it's a Windows 2008 R2 Server) (btw, I did try IP Address, FQDN but works with Explorer but CVS Importer wont read the path. At one time, I did get Access Denied but I dont get access denied anymore after adding the service account to the share. firewalls are off on the servers) Update: I go to My Computer Network I see many servers but ServerB is not in the list..

• Open Windows Server 2012/Windows 8 Start Menu

  I realize that Windows Server 2012 (and Windows 8) removed the start menu button and replaced it with moving your mouse to the upper right corner of the screen. This works fine when the desktop is full screen. However, I access all my servers through windowed RDP connections (or through the Hyper-V console window) and in this case, the desktop is not full screen. Therefore, in order to open the new "start" menu, I have to slowly move my mouse very carefully within the window to just a few pixels within top right corner of the window in order to open the menu. Also, because the session is windowed, the default hot keys (Windows + D, etc.) won't work. There has got to be an easier way. Has anyone else experienced this frustration?
