• Windows Server 2012 - SSL Cypher Suite Order Not Long Enough

  I want to re-order the cypher suites on our new Windows Server 2012 box to help mitigate the BEAST vulnerability for our clients. I went to Local Group Policy => Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Network => SSL Configuration Settings, opened SSL Cypher Suite Order, enabled it, and copied the values from the SSL Cypher Suites textbox. I pasted them into notepad, re-ordered them, then copied+pasted them back into the SSL Cypher Suites textbox. However, the box isn't long enough to hold them all, despite the fact that the length didn't change. I would have to drop the last 3 cyphers (SSL_CK_DES_192_EDE3_CBC_WITH_MD5,TLS_RSA_WITH_NULL_SHA256,TLS_RSA_WITH_NULL_SHA) in order for it to fit. Should I just drop them? Other ideas?

• Security Audit Failures in Event Viewer Windows Server 2008R2

  When I am looking at the security tab of my event viewer on a Windows Server 2008 R2, I am showing a ton of Audit Failures with Event ID 4776. The computer attempted to validate the credentials for an account. Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon Account: randy Source Workstation: HPDB1 Error Code: 0xc0000064 I verified the account "randy" exist in my Active Directory. From my understanding, there has not been any recent password changes. Is there any way to get detailed information on this error? I am wondering what program is requesting this information. Also, is there any way to clear this error up? I was thinking about resetting the password and changing it back to the original.

• Recommendations for managing dedicated server DNS

  I've rented a dedicated server for several years with a number of domains. I've got a coding background so am comfortable with that side of the tech, but I hate that I still don't truly understand DNS settings. Example: My provider (hostgator) just told me that my parent nameservers are not correctly configured as there is no A record for my primary nameserver. What book/link/tutorial should I read to go from kind of understanding that comment to really understanding it & knowing exactly what I need to do to fix it rather than trial & error which is what I usually do. Thanks BTW I'm using a WHM/cpanel linux setup at hostgator but am eager to learn the fundamentals.

• How to disable System service from listening on port 80 in Windows Server 2003

  I'm trying to install a service on a Windows Server 2003 machine which is supposed to listen on port 80 but it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead?

  I have a Dell R710 with 72GB of memory running Hyper-V. Within Hyper-V I have a Windows 2008 (32-bit) VM running Terminal Services. How do I allocate memory so that any user who connects to this Terminal Server (from their thin-client) is allocated 2GB (or whatever amount I choose) of memory? Currently I have provisioned the TS with 2GB of memory but it seems that this is shared among all that connect. Please let me know if there is further information I can provide. Thank you.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 permissions: Users can't write despite being administrators

  We just set up a new R2 server and created a bunch of local user accounts on it that are part of the administrator's group. We then set permissions on some shares and folders to allow FULL CONTROL to anyone from the administrator's group. However, the users cannot write to these folders when logged on. On some folders on the C:\ they are prompted for consent in order to gain permission to read them. Any ideas? Are there any tools that would help me troubleshoot this? • Kill Leaking Connections on SQL Server 2005

  We have a legacy ASP application that somewhere leaks SQL Connections. In Activity Monitor, I can see a bunch of idle processes with Last Batch times over an hour old. When I look at the T-SQL command batch, these are always FETCH API_CURSORXXX, which from my understanding is caused by improperly closed ASP ADO Recordsets. While we are try to pinpoint the offeding code, is there a way for me to monitor which requests open which cursors? I'm assuming profiler, but I'm not sure what I should be monitoring exactly. I can see a bunch of calls to sp_cursoropen but I don't see the API_CUSORXXX name anywhere. Second, would anyone be able to suggest a script we could run to kill these processes based on the Last Batch time 10 minutes and Last Batch Command being FETCH API_CURSORXXX? For various reasons, we unfortunately don't have any SQL Server DBAs.

• VMware Server guest systems are extremely slow with IO load on host (Ubuntu 8.04)

  We are experiencing performance issues with a VMware Server 2.x installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 host. When the host system is generating IO load (for example, copying large files as part of a backup operation), the guests (also Ubuntu 8.04) become extremely unresponsive and slow (simple Apache HTTP requests taking 5 seconds instead of the usual 200ms). We tried optimizing various aspects of the VMs, but the issue remains. Is there a known bug with VMware performance under linux if host IO load is high? Is there a way to fix this? Is this only an issue with Ubuntu systems, or have you seen it on other systems before? Thanks!

  Earlier I wrote a blog post about how to resolve the error with database diagram. Today I faced the same error when I was dealing with a database which is upgraded from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2. When I was searching for the solution online I ended up on my own earlier solution SQL SERVER – ERROR: FIX – Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. I really found it interesting that I ended up on my own solution. However, the solution to the problem this time was a bit different. Let us see how we can resolve the same. Error: Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects. Workaround / Fix / Solution : Follow the steps listed below and it should for sure solve your problem. (NOTE: Please try this for the databases upgraded from previous version. For everybody else you should just follow the steps mentioned here.) Select your database >> Right Click >> Select Properties Go to the Options In the Dropdown at right labeled “Compatibility Level” choose “SQL Server 2005(90)” Select FILE in left side of page In the OWNER box, select button which has three dots (…) in it Now select user ‘sa’ or NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and click OK. This will solve your problem. However, there is one very important note you must consider. When you change any database owner, there are always security related implications. I suggest you check your security policies before changing authorization. I did this to quickly solve my problem on my development server. If you are on production server, you may open yourself to potential security compromise. I'm on a really tight budget (no profit) so ClamAV seem like a good choice. What is the best way to run ClamAV under these circumstances? I'm concidering the following options: Just running the raw windows build from http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamav/ an setup definition updates with task scheduler. Any way to automate updates of the scanner (binaries)? Using a "distro" like ClamWin or Immunet (advertised on clamav.net). Any suggestions are welcome.

  I've just taken over the administration of a Windows 2008 web server from a previous employee on a temporary basis. I need to change the Admin password as soon as I can but I've noticed that quite a few of the services also run under this account. So: Is there a quick way to find out which services will be affected by me changing the password or is it a question of going down the list? It doesn't seem right to me that the Admin account is used in this manner; should I create a different account for these services, or is using the Admin a/c standard practice? In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose).   Right now, I've got a Brother P-touch labeler that prints four or five sizes of text on one long label. It has features such as italics and bold. It's...non-ideal. What do you use in your server room? I have heard of labelers that will print vertically as well as horizontally, or which can produce labels for cable management as well. I also think it would be great to be able to produce barcodes for my tapes (LTO-3). So basically, I would like a labeler that prints normal, can print cable labels, and can print barcodes. Unicorn optional. Any ideas, or could you even suggest the best labeler for each solution?

• Timeouts when connecting to SQL Server since installing SP1 for Windows 7

  Hi, I just installed SP1 for windows 7 and I have severe performance degradation when connecting to SQL Server 2005 since then. Establishing connection takes more than 30 seconds while it's instantaneous on another computer. Firewall is disabled and I didn't make any change to the configuration. It happens both when trying to connect with a hostname and with an ip address. Everything else seems to be fine (for instance, I'm have no issue connecting to other computers with remote desktop) What can cause such a problem? Thanks in advance! Edit : uninstalling the SP1 solves the issue instantly.

• Configuring BitLocker on existing Windows Server 2008

  On our file server, we want to enable BitLocker so that we can encrypt a single drive and I know that we have to also encrypt the drive the system is installed on. In my tests with VMs, I have to create a partition on the same disk as Windows is installed either before I install Windows or after (I can use the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool). This tool shrinks the C: drive to make way for a 1.5GB partition. I'm a little concerned about doing this with a live system so wanted to see if it was possible to get BitLocker to use a partition on another drive?

  Hi We have a dedicated sql-server 2008 r2 enterprise edition. The setup is: D: (data files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as log files) (raid 10) E: (log files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as data files) (raid 1) F: (transaction log backup) - stored remote on a SAN Today we moved our log files to new disks (from F: to E:). From a shared volume ( F:(SAN)) to dedicated local disks (E:). What then happend was that the "disk time", "avg. transfer time" and "avg disk write queue length" increased on the volume where we have the data files (D:) (not on the volume where the log files are located). The data volume and log volume does not share disks, however they share the same controller card. "Disk idle time" is low for all volumes. One thought is ofcourse that the controller card might be overloaded. But, we need more ideas on where the problem might be.

• Windows Server 2003 (as workstation) unable to write to Samba fileshares

  Setup is a Samba fileserver under Linux, which i am trying to access from a Windows Server 2003 box which has been reconfigured as a workstation. I can log onto the fileshares and can copy/delete files, but trying to open a file then write to it fails. Renaming files also fails with an error about requiring a filename. Drag/dropping files onto Xemacs gives me a message about copying from the network zone, and once open the file is read-only. Any ideas of what is wrong? I suspect it is a miscommunication of security details, as folder security options are all unchecked (checking them has no effect). I know it is not a problem with Samba itself, as Window2000, WindowsXP, and Nautulas (under Linux) can all access/edit fileshare files fine using the same userid/password. I am not using domain logins.

  Hi, We have a couple of Macs, running Leopard and Snow Leopard in our otherwise pure Windows environment. We cannot get file names longer than 31 characters and some times the file permissions gets scrabbled (users can't delete their own folders or access files they usually access). This only occurs when connecting through AFP, We've tried with SMB but it's horribly slow when working with larger documents, so it's not an option. I somewhere read about AFP 3.0 being the answer. So my question is: Is there some way of updating my "AFP version" on Windows Server 2003, or does anyone have a different idea of what might help to resolve this situation?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Replication log reader could not execute sp_replcmds

  This log reader agent worked perfectly for several months until the user referenced in the error was removed from the domain. After that time the error 'The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'SERVER'' was received with more detail 'Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user' that referenced said user. This user was referenced nowhere in the the log reader agent other than the Publication Access List from which it was subsequenctly removed. The agent would still not successfully start up. The simple problem here, I believe, is that the log reader agent was created under that user and that no longer exists in the domain. Is there an 'owner' somewhere that needs to be changed? Every other function on the database continues to execute successfully. Any other help or thought would be appreciated.

• Cannot install new certificate in IIS 7 on Windows Server 2008 R2

  We are trying to renew our existing web site certificate on our IIS 7 site under Windows Server 2008 R2, but we continue to get the "Access is denied" error that others have posted. However, when we have gone to implement the common fix of making sure the Administrator group has full access to all folders and subfolders on the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA folder, we get an "Access is Denied" error on changing those permissions. Yes, we are logged in as Administrator user - it just seems to not allow us to modify the group permissions to this folder. Help! We need to renew our certificate before March 2011!

• Windows Server 2008: Limit UDP/TCP packets per IP or ban

  How I can limit UDP/TCP packets per IP send to my host (or better PORT) per second or minute ? Would be nice to ban that IP for 12/24 hours or even for ever. I got Windows Server 2008 and I'm very poor in Windows administration but quite good in Linux. EDIT: By basic problem is that They sending a lot of rubbish UPD and TCP packets.. TCP packets without SYNCH, fragmented UDP packets so my servers stop responding.. So I need to cut off users (IPs) sending more than X packets per second. I need solution witch provides me, somehow, configurable: X packets of certain type (UDP, TCP or both - lets say parameter named Z ) are allowed to be received by IP on Y port, otherwise this packet should be DROPPED. My virtual hosts are hosted by VirtualBox and I'm able to forward all incoming packets certain type and certain port to the specific Virtual Host, but I need to DROP them before my VirtualBox receive them.

• Windows 2008 Server Firewall blocks from printing in other subnet

  Greetings, i have a windows 2008 server with activated firewall in the 192.168.0.xx subnet. From there i want to print on an printer which is located in the 192.168.10.xx subnet. Now when i try to print with the firewall on, nothing happens... when i turn the firewall off it prints flawlessly. Now i messed around with the windows firewall for about 4 hours straight and i cant seem to find a rule which lets me print. Even when i set the firewall to let everything through im unable to print. Has anyone encountered the same or a similar problem and has a solution for this issue? Thanks in advance xenolf
