• QObject cloning

  I know that Qobjects are supposed to be identities not values eg you cannot copy them and by default the copy constructor and asignment are disabled as explained in qt documentation. But is it possible to create a new Qobject from an existing one using a clone method? Would this be a logic error ? If i say QObject b; QObject a; b.cloneFrom(a); or QObject a = new QBject(); QObject b = new QBject(); b->cloneFrom(a); and the clone method copyes stuff like members etc would this be wrong? And if this is ok can i write my own copy constructor and asignment operator that does just that? Note: i actually want to try this with classes that inherit qobject.

• Trying to extend ActionView::Helpers::FormBuilder

  Hello I am trying to DRY up some code by moving some logic into the FormBuilder. After reading the documentation about how to select and alternative form builder the logical solution for me seemed to be something like this.   i just start to practice with php built-in, gettype() and its return value. This function is capable to return testing result such as boolean, integer, unknown type, etc. But among those testing result, there's one caught my eyes : unknown type. After reading gettype, and try to find some reference here, i can not get any. So, the question is what kind of type can be categorized as "unknown type" ? is it possible ? or am i just missing reading something ?

  i have an xml doc with a structure like this: below is supposed to be XML but i dont know how to format it so it will show correct so i used [ ] instead of the typical < [Book] [Title title="Door Three"/] [Author name ="Patrick"/] [/Book] [Book] [Title title="Light"/] [Author name ="Roger"/] [/Book] i want to be able to PROGRAMMATICALY add xml nodes to this xml in a particular place. lets say i wanted to add a Link node as a child to the author node where the name is Roger (or whatever dynamic value is passed in here). i think its best if the function containing this logic is passed a param for the name to add an xml node under, please advise and whats the code i need to add xml nodes to a certain place in the xml? now i am using .AppendChild() method but it doesn't allow for me to specify a parent node to add under... thanks all.

  Hello, I am wondering if you guys know different approach to disable an event for a while. Let me elaborate this more : Lets say I have a div or button which has a subscriber to its onclick event. To prevent the double click when the the methods are doing some ajax things, these are the some of the ways we can do : Disable the button till the method finishes its job Unbind till the methods finishes its job and then bind it again. Use some kind of flagging system like boolean so it will prevent method from working more than once. So is there any other ways, maybe some javascript tricks or jQuery tricks which is more efficient and better practice. Thanks in advance.

  I think I might be overtired but I cannot for the life of me make sense of this, and I think it's due to a lack of knowledge of javascript var itv=function(){ return setInterval(function(){ sys.puts('interval'); }, 1000); } var tout=function(itv){ return setTimeout(function(){ sys.puts('timeout'); clearInterval(itv); }, 5500); } With these two functions I can call a=tout(itv()); and get a looping timer to run for 5.5 seconds and then exit, essentially. • MVC2: Best Way to Intercept ViewRequest and Alter ActionResult

  I'm building an ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application that requires some sophisticated authentication and business logic that cannot be achieved using the out of the box forms authentication. I'm new to MVC so bear with me... My plan was to mark all restricted View methods with one or more custom attributes (that contain additional data). The controller would then override the OnActionExecuting method to intercept requests, analyze the target view's attributes, and do a variety of different things, including re-routing the user to different places. I have the interception and attribute analysis working, but the redirection is not working as expected. I have tried setting the ActionExecutingContext.Result to null and even have tried spooling up controllers via reflection and invoking their action methods. No dice.   Hello all. I'm building a source code search engine, and I'm returning the results on a HTML page (aspx to be exact, but the view logic is in HTML). When someone searches a string, I also return the whole line of code where this string can be found in a file. However, some lines of code come from HTML/aspx files and these lines contain HTML specific comments (). When I try to print this line on the HTML page, it interprets it as a comment and does not show it on the screen....how should I go about solving this so that it actually shows up?   I have the following link function MyLinqToSQLTable.Where(x => x.objectID == paramObjectID).ToList(); I most of the time you can change a linq call to be several lines by adding curly brackets around the method body. Like this: MyLinqToSQLTable.Where(x => { x.objectID == paramObjectID; }).ToList(); Problem is the implied return that was there when I just did a Boolean compare is now not done. Return (x.objectID == paramObjectID); is not accepted either. How do do this? can I do this? NOTE: I know that I can add another where clause if needed. But I would still like to know the answer to this.

• Retry web service call if authentication failure requires re-login

  I'm consuming a web service from C#, and the web service requires a login call and then uses cookie sessions. The web service will time out sessions after a certain timeframe, after which the client will have to re-login. I'd like to find a way to automatically catch the soap fault the service sends back in this scenario, and handle it by re-logging in and then retrying the previously attempted call. I would prefer to do this somehow automatically for all the web service methods in question, rather than having to manually wrap the calls with the retry logic. Suggestions?

If a friend likes a food I stick a row into the FriendsFoods table, like this: ID Friend Food 1 'Tom' 'Pizza' FriendsFoods has a Primary Key 'ID', and two non-null foreign keys 'Friend' and 'Food' to the 'Friends' and 'Foods' tables, respectively. Now suppose I have a Friend tom .NET object corresponding to 'Tom', and Tom no longer likes pizza (what is wrong with him?) FriendsFoods ff = tom.FriendsFoods.Where(x => x.Food.Name == 'Pizza').Single(); tom.FriendsFoods.Remove(ff); pizza.FriendsFoods.Remove(ff); If I try to SubmitChanges() on the DataContext, I get an exception because it attempts to insert a null into the Friend and Food columns in the FriendsFoods table. I'm sure I can put together some kind of convoluted logic to track changes to the FriendsFoods table, intercept SubmitChanges() calls, etc to try and get this to work the way I want, but is there a nice, clean way to remove a Many-To-Many relationship with LINQ-To-SQL?

• Use of "setTimeout()" in my jQuery Expression

  I'm trying to add the JavaScript function setTimeout() to my jQuery expression. Without the setTimeout() my function loads a partial view with updated information when I enter text into my textbox. But, it loads the information with every keystroke. My logic is that if I can put in a timer then when the user stops typing, a second later the data is updated.   I have had some problems with authentication in ASP.NET. I'm not used most of the built in authentication in .NET. I gotten some complaints from users using Internet Explorer (any version - may affect other browsers as well) that the login process proceeds but when redirected they aren't authenticated and are bounced back to loginpage (pages that require authentication check if logged in and if not redirect back to loginpage). Can this be a cookie problem? Do I need to check if cookies are enabled by the user?   Regarding data validation, I've heard that the options are to "fail fast, fail early" or "complete validation". The first approach fails on the very first validation error, whereas the second one builds up a list of failures and presents it. I'm wondering about this in the context of both server-side and client-side data validation. Which method is appropriate in what context, and why? My personal preference for data-validation on the client-side is the second method which informs the user of all failing constraints. I'm not informed enough to have an opinion about the server-side, although I would imagine it depends on the business logic involved.

  First, I should make it clear that this is required for an academic project. I am trying to find the maximum number of child nodes for any node in a tree, using Common Lisp. For example, if I have 3 views to display via a ViewPager, it should return back to the first View after the third View on fling instead of stopping at that third view. • MVC: Model View Controller -- does the View call the Model?

  I've been reading about MVC design for a while now and it seems officially the View calls objects and methods in the Model, builds and outputs a view. I think this is mainly wrong. The Controller should act and retrieve/update objects inside the Model, select an appropriate View and pass the information to it so it may display. Only crude and rudiementary PHP variables/simple if statements should appear inside the View. If the View gets the information it needs to display from the Model, surely there will be a lot of PHP inside the View -- completely violating the point of seperating presentation logic.

• Python if statement efficiency

  A friend (fellow low skill level recreational python scripter) asked me to look over some code. I noticed that he had 7 separate statements that basically said. if ( a and b and c): do something the statements a,b,c all tested their equality or lack of to set values. As I looked at it I found that because of the nature of the tests, I could re-write the whole logic block into 2 branches that never went more than 3 deep and rarely got past the first level (making the most rare occurrence test out first). if a: if b: if c: else: if c: else: if b: if c: else: if c: To me, logically it seems like it should be faster if you are making less, simpler tests that fail faster and move on. My real questions are 1) When I say if and else, should the if be true, does the else get completely ignored? 2) In theory would if (a and b and c) take as much time as the three separate if statements would?

• What trivial real-life example do you use to explain programming to total non-programmers?

  Programmers seem to live in a world of their own (as this site indicates), with their own vibrant culture - and their own premises and vocabulary. Once we've been in the field for a bit, we take a lot of things for granted. But I'm often faced with the question "What do you do?" Or "What is programming?" I generally try to answer this with a small, often trivial, real-world example of how programming is prevalent in our everyday lives and keeps things running. The example I use most often is an elevator - someone has to program the logic of that... And I've seen elevators that are "smart" and ones that are quite backwards and foolish. (And you can easily understand if/decision and looping from that... incorporates a lot of important programming concepts in a very small example.) I've sometimes heard people use traffic lights as an example. What example do you / would you use to explain the concept of programming to someone completely clueless?
