  • Most efficient way to use a laptop like a desktop? [closed]

    When I'm at home (which is the vast majority of the time now in Summer), I rarely use my laptop away from my desk. When it is at the desk, I plug in a monitor through HDMI, a power cable, and a mouse and keyboard that always stay there. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to a good dock or product that does a good job of transforming a laptop into a true "desktop replacement." Ideally, it would allow all the connections to remain in place, with minimal effort to take the laptop in and out of the fixture. Thanks for any suggestions!

  • SAN cache memory upgrade

    We currently have an IBM DS4300 Dual Controller Fibre SAN. It is a good box, but getting pretty old. It came with 256MB of cache per controller. Recently we replaced the batteries in one of the controllers and noticed that the cache is a DDR PC2100 ECC DIMM. Of course, we are thinking about how cheap this RAM is now and is there any good reason we can't upgrade the RAM. IBM used to have a "Turbo" upgrade to this box that doubled the cache and had a bunch of software features for about 10K USD. Since that product has been end-of-lifed, I don't think we can get that upgrade and we don't need the software upgrades (FlashCopy, StorageCopy, etc). Besides the obvious potential warranty issue, what if any issues would we expect to see if attempting to put 2 - 1GB DIMMS in this unit? Any other things I am missing here?   • Linux webserver tutorials (WordPress)

    Hi I will be setting up a linux webserver to host WordPress on. The problem is that although I know how to do it, I don't know how to properly do it. So I'm now looking for semi-advanced tutorials that are complete and secure above anything else. I don't really mind trying a new distro, but I prefer ubuntu/debian. I read this post: Any good resources for setting up a webserver in Linux ? But these are very limited. So far not a lot of luck finding good guides and howtos. This should probably be a community wiki but I can't seem to transform it myself. Thanks

The network isn't anywhere close to prepared and I have been looking for a general audit checklist since one hasn't been provided by the auditors and haven't found much good information out there.   • windows server 2008 vs ubuntu 11 [closed]

    I am working on implementing a custom server application that should be capable of handling a very large volume of traffic. I am aware that this type of question has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a good answer. What I'm really looking for is for a server with given specs which OS will be able to handle a larger traffic faster and more reliably. I do not care about rights management or any other features. I am fairly good with both platforms, and so I would like to pick the OS with better performance on a clean install, and with nothing else running. Thanks in advance.

  • Open-source training class/room/instructor resource management software?

    We're looking to replace an internal system used for managing training classes with something a bit more robust. Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point.   • Pros/cons to turning off cable modem

    A little off the wall perhaps, but ... I have a cable modem and a router for a wireless home network. Is it a good or a bad idea to turn it off at night and during the day when we're all at work or school? Or should I leave it on 24/7. I was thinking that leaving it on constantly makes me more vulnerable to hackers, not to mention wasting electricity. (Though I'd guess the amount of electricity used by a cable modem and a router is probably pretty trivial. Still, every little bit helps.) When I have turned it off and turned it on again, it takes several minutes for it to go through its little dialog with the cable company and get me connected to the Internet again, which is annoying but not a big deal. Anyone know any good reasons one way or the other?

    hi, I've a dell studio 1555 bought on september with Windows 7 64bit Professional on it. Audio devide works proprerly, while listening/watching audio/video contents (from disk or internet) Using VoIP Program Ventrilo Audio from others people works good, and I hear their voices clearly... Using VoIP Program such as Teamspeak 2/3, MSN, Skype I hear a really disturbed voice, and it's impossible to comprehend somethings... Anyway I can say that the first week that I've bought and installed Win7 Skype worked good, this problem happened after I installed Ventrilo... I tried to remove it (ventrilo) but nothing happened:( Please help me :D Thanks Marcx

  • My computer keeps crashing and I just want it FIXED

    So long story short, I had my brother build me a computer for my birthday last year. I saw how good his was (also built by him) so I decided I would have him build me one. About a month after this was all finished, my computer started crashing when I when run over 3 programs. For example, an online game, a music player (spotify), skype, and a browser with a few tabs open. The way it would crash is the screen will freeze and a buzzing noise will come from whatever audio device I am using (headset, speakers) I took it to a computer tech guy and he told me my cooling system was inadequate. SOOO he led me to buy a CORSAIR H75 Liquid cooling system. Everything was good for about a week, and now it just did the same thing again. I am so freaking over this guys and I really need some help figuring out what the heck is wrong, I dont care how long it takes, just please help me.

  • Software for scanning installation process?

    I forgot what is the name of the very good software which make some kind of restore point (save registry, and program files folder, etc...) before installing any software. After you install some program (ie "Notepad++") you can easily see what registry data use new installed program, on what location are the file's is stored and many more. The reason that I'm asking for help is that I have to automate some installation of public software, so after installation I need to uninstall it, so i have to delete all junk files. The software is called something like install wizard, or wizard install I forgot. If you have any idea of other application that do same thing , or you know exactly name of that software, or you have some good idea how to solve easy solve many installation and uninstallation, please let me know.   • JSP / Tomcat / Apache setup overview on Fedora Core

    Hi Folks, For someone with so much Java experience, boy do I feel clueless - thanks in advance for your help in my grocking the present (Feb, 2010) JSP environment. Here's what I am hoping to learn: Do I understand correctly that most people use Apache to "front-end" their Tomcat servers, such that Apache "talks" directly to web clients and "proxies" Tomcat servers? Do I understand correctly that Apache isn't capable of serving JSP directly but requires a server (like Tomcat)? Is there an RPM package for Fedora Core so I don't have to build one myself? Or, does Fedora Core's package installer do a good job on this one from source code? (Some do, some don't!) While I'm here asking questions; Does Tomcat come with a working example that one can start hacking on as a way to get started quickly? If not, got a good suggestion? Thanks folks, RT

  • What's the best solution for file sharing in my case? DAS or NAS?

    I want to have in my network small, cheap and energy efficient server with will be fully customizable (Gnu/Linux, OpenBSD). What is more I want to have big, redundant storage in my network and access to it via server. I have already small terminal without hard drive (no SATA/PATA, one drive on USB) which works fine. I don't want to buy big server, or to use regular computer for that. It's not cheap. I thought about a small case (ITX?), and cheap computer in this with SATA ports, but I cannot find anything interesting :( I thought about NAS in network and server independently and booting server from NAS, I'm not sure which technologies will be good for that, and I don't know what with performance. Direct connection to NAS through network from workstation is next pro for that. What do you think about DAS? It will be good for that?

  • ADFS 2.0 and CRM 2011 IFD - Error 403 when being redirected

    I'm not sure what happened here, but let me give you the rundown. I have a CRM 2011 IFD that by all accounts was functioning. Out of nowhere, I find that when being redirected to ADFS 2.0 login page by CRM, instead of seeing the login page, I get the following error: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. I'm not sure what is going on here. The certs are good, as best as I can tell, the logins are good. More specifically, nothing has been modified. This all worked just fine, and now it doesn't. I'm really stumped.

  • How to prevent a URL in an email I send from being auto-linked by the recipient's email client?

    When I type a URL into an email in Outlook, it automatically converts it to a hyperlink. I can, of course, remove the hyperlink from the context menu: But, then when the email is received and when I view it in my Sent Items folder, the urls are again converted to hyperlinks. How can I prevent this? Embedded images are no good because the URL must be copy and pasteable (among numerous other reasons that this approach is not great). And it must retain the formatting applied when I send it. This answer on stackoverflow shows a good trick for preventing auto linked urls when sending an email programmatically, but I'm looking for a way to do this from the UI. Perhaps there a way to edit the HTML of the message before it is sent? If not, I guess I'm off to write an Outlook Add-in.

    With many companies offering build-to-order PCs, where they can source components at bulk purchase prices, is there any value in building your own PC. Is it still a good option for everyone or is it only cost-effective for those building fringe equipment like high spec gaming platforms? Don't forget to factor in the time and effort you spend building and configuring the machine. I know that it is often worthwhile as it builds understanding of your machine, gets you exactly what you want, etc., but is it still good for your wallet or would you be better off paying someone else to do it and spend more time doing something else?

    We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

  • Understanding the Linux boot process, subsystem initialization, & udev rules?

    I'm creating UDEV rules for automounting external drives on a headless server, much in the same way as Gnome-VFS does automounting during a user session. I'm concerned with the rule's behavior at boot-time. There's a good chance one of these drives will be connected during a boot, and I'd prefer any connected drives get mounted in the right place. The drives might be either USB or Firewire, and they are mounted from a shell script fired off by UDEV on detecting an "add". Here are my questions: When UDEV runs the mount for these devices at boot, will the system be ready to mount it? Or will the script get triggered too early? If it's too early, what's a good way for a script to tell that the system isn't ready yet (so sleep a while before checking again)? The UDEV rule matches ACTION=="add". Does this event even fire at system boot?

  • Load Balancer recommendations

    I provide hosting service for about 250 clients to date, and this is increasing on a monthly basis. For each client, I have 2 "services" configured for L4 balancing / persistence .. one on port 80, another for port 443 which redirects to another internal port as well as 4 servers per service. This equates to a total of 500 "services" and 2000 "servers". I'm currently running with a couple CoyotePoint load balancers, and have had a look at some Barracudas but so far I'm really not impressed by those. Could anyone recommend some good load balancers which would be able to support this sort of load ? And which offer a good API, or shell access to automate management.
