• Need decent undelete utility for Windows

  So I get the phone call from a friend or relative or client: "Looks like I accidentally deleted 4 years worth of accounting data. Oh, and I don't have any backups. Can you help?" What I need is a good Windows tool (for NTFS I think) that scans blocks marked as deleted and attempts to recover the file. And I need one that can be run from a thumb drive or since installing new software has a decent chance of overwriting the data before it can be recovered. Googling for such tools turns up mostly carefully-crafted advertisements for moderately expensive products with a "Free! Demo! Version!" which is not exactly reassuring. Any recommendations for a good tool?

  My title is probably not very clear but here's the deal. I'm a software engineer with experience in many languages but my current focus is Windows/Web applications using C# and .NET. I'm currently running a personal blog using WordPress and love it. I need to setup a website for my consulting company and, while I enjoy the canned benefits of a CMS like WordPress, would like to build a custom ASP.NET site. Either way my current LAMP host is not secure so I'm looking to switch and looking for a reliable alternative. My ultimate wish list of requirements would be a cost-effective (currently spending ~$120/yr for web+domain hosting) host that would allow me to deploy my own ASP.NET code and host a WordPress blog (IIS w/ PHP to external MySQL or separate LAMP site). Thanks in advance for your recommendations (Google is not good for this type of search :-D) Edit: I'm fine if I have to ditch WordPress. Really I'm just looking for a good ASP.NET host, the WordPress compatibility would be a plus.

  I need to evaluate in a lab environment the use of Windows Server 2008 R2's NPS for 802.1x authentication with Cisco Catalyst 3750 switches; the general idea is to only let clients connect to the company network if they can provide valid domain logon credentials, placing them in a restricted VLAN instead if they can't. NAP would also be a bonus, but it can be evaluated later; the main point now is only 802.1x authentication. Although I have very good knowledge of Windows and Active Directory (on the Microsoft side) and quite good knowledge of Catalyst switches (on the Cisco side), I'm totally new to 802.1x; I'd really like some general guidelines and help here, and some sort of implementation guide would also be very useful.

  I have to make sure that one process in server never goes down. So I'm think of cron vs daemon. Please provide me a good example of unix shell scripts that will run as daemon process. I'm trying to avoid the non sense of permission issue for crontab. Also there is not much good resource on the web for this. Will this daemon process automatically start during a server/system restart. If not how can I achieve this?

  I'm creating UDEV rules for automounting external drives on a headless server, much in the same way as Gnome-VFS does automounting during a user session. I'm concerned with the rule's behavior at boot-time. There's a good chance one of these drives will be connected during a boot, and I'd prefer any connected drives get mounted in the right place. The drives might be either USB or Firewire, and they are mounted from a shell script fired off by UDEV on detecting an "add". Here are my questions: When UDEV runs the mount for these devices at boot, will the system be ready to mount it? Or will the script get triggered too early? If it's too early, what's a good way for a script to tell that the system isn't ready yet (so sleep a while before checking again)? The UDEV rule matches ACTION=="add". Does this event even fire at system boot?

  I have problem with spam and postfix + postgray. It generally good works but I have false-positive still and reject good email. And now I have problems. Can I configure postfix (and postgray) that: if_reject than redirect to [email protected] (change recipients). Or I don't know maybe: Each email have to copy and send to [email protected] Then filtering? If hit restriction than just reject (another copy is in [email protected]) How to do it?   Changing the entire question as earlier one was very confusing. I have been exploring different clustering system to run Virtual machines on two different machines on LAN with high availability. Currently I am already using DRBD resource on two different machines on Primary/Secondary mode. In case the primary fails I manually promote the secondary to Primary and start the VM. I also explored Gluster and looks good, however, I would rather prefer clustering over Gluster (user space FS). So if anyone has idea which one would be better from ease of use prospective please I would be interested in. Moreover, sheepdog project appears good, however, could not find much documentations/Howtos. I am using Centos 6.

• ubuntu 10.04 console resolution

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv6000 After I installed it, the text in the console (when I press ALT+F1) was small and the console had a good resolution (I think the same as my LCD, 1280x800). Also, at boot, the "Ubuntu" logo was small and centered in the middle of the screen. That was good. After that, I installed the nVidia driver via the "System-Administration-Hardware drivers" screen. After the driver was installed, the text in the console was larger and more pixelated, and also the "Ubuntu" logo was much larger and looked uglier because it was pixelated. Can anyone help me change the resolution in the console and boot screen back to what it was before I installed the nVidia driver?

• Windows 7 disc not recognized by DVD drive

  My machine is a recent model Systemax, less than 2 years old. It came with Vista 32bit and I bought Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for it. When I insert the Windows 7 DVD into the drive, it churns a little but does not recognize the disc. If I double click the DVD drive icon, it prompts me to insert a disc. I tried a different DVD (Office 2007) and the drive recognized the disc. I tried the Windows 7 disc in my Dell laptop and it recognized the disc. So basically, the disc is good and the drive is good, but they don't like each other. I tried to boot to the Windows 7 DVD and the system did not see it. I turned off the Lightscribe service and that didn't help. Does anybody have an idea what's wrong here? Thanks.

• Does RAID 1 protect against corruption?

  Does Raid 1 protect against data corruption? For example, let's say that I am keeping all of my important files on a NAS that uses 2 disks in a RAID 1. If one hard drive has some kind of internal problem and the data becomes corrupted, does the RAID recognize this automatically and correct it using data from the other good disk? Could it even know which copy is the good one? Does RAID 5 protect against corruption? I know that RAID is not a backup solution. I am trying to figure out how to make sure that I am not backing up corrupt data!

For the most part, the IMAP functionality works beautifully, but I'd like to add one feature if I can: I want Dovecot not to serve large messages to high-latency clients.   I have been googling about the differences between them. Bacula has lots of roles BackupPC is easier to configure Bacula works with agent, not rsync (great for Windows backups) It seems that Bacula is most often compared to Amanda though, while BackupPC seems a perfectly lovely and popular backup distribution to. I currently backup my servers with rsnapshot, but I am looking for a professional scalable solution that could also back-up 50 hosts without problems. Preferably a solution that can offer bare metal restores for my Linux servers. I am not looking to reinstall the exact same version of Plesk, the software, etc... Update: I see this ranks high in Google, I found a good article: http://www.serverfocus.org/backuppc-vs-bacula-vs-amanda. I personally think that BackupPC is good for smaller environment, but Bacula, despite the high learning curve, is better for environments that requilre scaling.

• Does it mean video card is broken?

  Hello, I've just installed some sort of relatively old video card and now computer freezes while playing certain video games (Civilization 4, HOMM V). Some other video games with far better graphics works well (Dawn of War I). Note that "freezing" games runs nicely and smoothly for about 10-15 mins, no lag or any other indication that video card may be not good enough. And then PC suddenly freezes, nothing works but rebooting. The question is, is this a normal behavior of a video card which is simply "not good enough" for the games in question, or is there something broken? Card itself or motherboard or whatever? OS is Windows 7 if that matters, and I don't know exact videocard specs but that probably doesn't matter for this sort of question... thanks in advance!

• How to host a scalable social networking app

  I am in the middle of developing a social networking application for a very select user niche which could scale to a few million users. Right now I have always hosted applications on RackSpace Cloud and I have no issues with them at all - always been a really good service and never had any downtime. My question is though does anyone think that cloud computing is not the way to host scalable web apps? Or can anyone with experience of this recommend a better solution. I have always shunned trying to run big servers from my own facilities as I think it seems silly to go to the expense of bringing in big alternative power supplies and all the other necessary precautions when other companies already do this. I looked at managed hosting services but this proved to be a bit too expensive for us at the start and the scalability of it wasnt good enough - it would take a day or two to get a new server provisioned. Therefore I ended up on a cloud platform. If anyone has any recommendations or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

  I've accumulated a good collection of book snippets in pdf format from Safari Online and I was thinking about getting an ebook reader, specifically the Sony-PRS300, to hold them all for portable reference. If anyone has done this, two questions. Are there any DRM restrictions when the pdfs are put on the reader? I can't see any restrictions flat out in the pdfs on my notebook. There's a watermark that says the pdf is licensed to me. How good is the reader at rendering complex pdfs, with code snippets and illustrations? • Java application crashes my computer. How do I troubleshoot?

  I am using NetBeans 4.1 for my university course (this is an older version, but is the required version for the course - I can't use a newer version). Whenever I use it for longer than several minutes, my computer crashes - it either reboots or I need to reset it. I have tried running with all startup items disabled (to rule out other applications interfering with the app), but it did no good. I have used Sysinternals procmon logging and the logs are corrupt - the only way I was able to get a good log was by enabling boot logging. However these are huge and I don't know what to look for. I am using Windows XP SP3, fully patched up and this is the only application that I have any kind of problem with. Can anyone suggest troubleshooting steps that will help me pinpoint the cause of these crashes and fix them?

  In a high traffic application, like an online auction system, few ms could determine 'to win or 'to lose' the 'battle'. I'm from Brazil. Here, I 'ping' local sites - like UOL - and receive replies in ~ 11ms. When I 'ping' US sites - like RackSpace - I receive replies in ~ 130 ms! The point is: I need a (very good like RackSpace [1]) infra-structure to host my killer online auction application, but there's no (RackSpace like) options in Brazil... Assuming that all users are located here, in Brazil, is it 'sine qua non' condition to host my application here, in Brazil? I think ~130 ms is a very high latency but, all users will receive this reply, sure? Well, where should I host my application? [1] Feel free to point me to any other very good host option other than RackSpace. I've cited it because I only know these guys...

• Browsing Pictures on a Mac

  Hi. After many years using linux, I decided to buy a mac. Now my main problem is: how do I synchronize pictures within my linux machines and the mac? I have been using digikam in linux, and I like it because I can just browse the pictures directly from my directories (and it is easy for me to keep directories synchronized within mac and linux). I have been testing iphoto and aperture, which are quite nice but if use them, my understanding is that I have to import all the pictures into these softwares, and this doesn't seem to be the ideal solution for me. I tried picasa, but I don't find it as good as iphoto and aperture. On the other hand it allows me to browse directories, without having two copies of the same pictures. I didn't try lightroom yet, would that be a good solution? I would appreciate any suggestion on this. Thanks!
