• Resources for setting up a Visual Studio/C++ development environment

  I haven't done much "front-end" development in about 15 years since moving to database development. I'm planning to start work on a personal project using C++ and since I already have MSDN I'll probably end up doing it in Visual Studio 2010. I'm thinking about using Subversion as a version control system eventually. Of course, I'd like to get up and running as quickly as I can, but I'd also like to avoid any pitfalls from a poorly organized project environment. So, my question is, are there any good resources with common best practices for setting up a development environment? I'm thinking along the lines of where to break down a solution into multiple projects if necessary, how to set up a unit testing process, organizing resources, directories, etc. Are there any great add-ons that I should make sure I have set up from the start? Most tutorials just have one simple project, type in your code and click on build to see that your new application says, "Hello World!". This will be a Windows application with several DLLs as well (no web development), so there doesn't need to be a deploy to a web server kind of process. Mostly I just want to make sure that I don't miss anything big and then have to extensively refactor because of it. Thanks!

• What /else/ causes this?

  MFC Toolbox Library.lib(SimpleFileIO.obj) : error LNK2005: _wcsnlen already defined in libcmtd.lib(wcslen_s.obj) fatal error LNK1169: one or more multiply defined symbols found This is driving me nuts. Normally, one would get this if the various projects that are a part of their solution do not agree on which CRT to use (single threaded, multi-threaded, release or debug). However, I have been over this thing about 500 times now, and they all agree. Background: this is a VS 2010 project just converted from VS 2008. MFC Toolbox Library.lib is set to compile as a static library, using /MTd, as is the target .exe I am trying to compile in this solution. Further, the solution that this is being converted from (VS 2008) already compiles & links properly!!! So it's not like that there is a disagreement between the two .vcproj's - or at least there wasn't before the conversion. Furthermore, the MFC Toolbox Library is used by about 25 other projects in another solution - and in that solution (Master Build English) it compiles & links against those other projects without complaint in both debug and release targets. I have just spent the last hour going over every single project property for this target project (Cimex Header Viewer) vs. several different target exe projects in Master Build English solution - and I cannot find a difference. They appear to be identical, excepting that they're different names. I've tried doing a clean & build all. I'm simply out of ideas. Does anyone have a thought on what else I might investigate??? I think I'm ready to start chewing glass. :(

• Anyone Experiencing Slow Builds With VS2010?

  Hi, We've recently upgraded to the final release of VS2010 and are experiencing very slow build times compared to the same code under 2008. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same so I can work out whether it's just our environment or not? A few details: Using VS2010 Ultimate on Windows 7 with fairly beefy machines, talking to TFS 2010. The solution has been upgraded from VS2008 but still builds against .NET 3.5 and ASP.NET MVC 1.0. It doesn't seem to be the compilation itself taking long but something else in the build process. This is because even projects that are up to date and don't need compiling are taking a few seconds or so to process. It's not due to an Visual Studio addin because a couple guys in the team haven't installed any. The first build after loading VS2010 is pretty quick, then they seem to slow down over time. For example on of the projects in my solution just took 00:00:00.08 to process after a restart. (The project was up to date and didn't need compiling) I then immediately hit rebuild and it jumps to 00:00:01.33. We're also experiencing the problem with another solution that uses .NET 4.0 that was building perfectly fine under VS2010 RC. There are no build events or anything like that I can blame, just straightforward assembly builds. The IDE is not very responsive during the slow builds. Anyone else has similar problems? Update: It looks like the resolving assembly references is taking a long time. Looking at the MSBuild diagnostic output or the example above the first build has 30ms for ResolveAssemblyReferences, the second build has 800ms. Subsequent builds seem to be taking longer copying stuff around, e.g. CopyFilesToOutputDirectory jumps from 1ms to 27ms.

• Word Automation : Replace do not work after TypeText

  I need to generate doc (real doc, not docx) files, the "best" way i have found is to use word automation (Word 2010). I have files that I open, and then replace values inside before saving it on a new name. (Ex : I replace "" with "155023"). To do this, I use the Application.Selection.Find. I just had a problem when the new value had more than 255 characters (Thanks Microsofts limitations ...). To avoid this problem, i use TypeText in this case. My problem now is once I use TypeText, the Replace do not work anymore .. And I can't find why. Any idea will be greatly appreciated. • How can i test my TSQL syntax?

  Quick question: How do i get some kind of database to use to test my sql syntax and create basic data. I have Sqlite Code which i'll soon put on a server. I have sql server 2008 installed with visual studio 2010. I tried connecting to the database and had no luck. I also tried using a .mdf file instead thinking its a file and i wont have connectivity issues. Wrong, i still couldnt connect and i used this site to help me (i'm aware its 2005) In that case i used var conn = new SqlConnection(@"Server=.\SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=C:\dev\src\test\SQL_DB_VS_Test\test.mdf;Database=dbo;Trusted_Connection=Yes;"); exception Unable to open the physical file "C:\dev\src\test\SQL_DB_VS_Test\test.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". Cannot attach the file 'C:\dev\src\test\SQL_DB_VS_Test\test.mdf' as database 'dbo'. with trusted = no i get Login failed for user ''. (What user am i suppose to set...). I created the .mdf with visual studio somehow.

• Can't Add XSD to Class Project

  Background: I started with a large solution with many applications in it in VS 2008 and I'm trying to split it up. Steps to repeat: I create a new VS 2010 C# class project I right click and choose add existing item I choose the XSD file from my old project and import it. The original file is 67KB the imported file is 18KB Line 134,135 of the original file <Mapping SourceColumn="ConfigType" DataSetColumn="ConfigType" /> <Mapping SourceColumn="ConfigValue" DataSetColumn="ConfigValue" /> Line 135,136 of the resulting file <Mapping SourceColumn="ConfigType" DataSetColumn="ConfigType" /> <Mappi Part way through it's life my old project was upgrade from 2.0 to 3.5 so some of the code is. Manually copy and paste of the xsd source into the new file and updating the 2.0.0.0 to 4.0.0.0 allowed me to open it it in The GUI for editing XSD files. After fixing all the connection strings and right clicking on every query and clicking configure then finish I was able to gain access to one of the tableadapters out of 6. I'm stumped as to hoe to get this to compile. Once it compiles I'm open sourcing it so ask if you want to see the code.

• visual studio attaching to a process in debug mode

  i have a strange problem. the dll that i built (lets call it my.dll) in c++ visual studio 2010 uses a third party library (say tp.lib) which in turn calls a third party dll (say tp.dll). for debugging prupose i have in configurationProperties-debugging-command: Excel.exe and configurationProperties-debugging-commandArguments: "$(TargetPath)" in my computer i also set PATH variable to the directory where tp.dll resides now when i hit the F5 in visual studio excel opens up with my.dll and crashes giving me a "cannot open in dos mode" error. the reason this happens is tp.dll is not deployed when debug version of my.dll is deployed. when i open an instance of excel seperately and manually drop the debug version of my.dll then everything works fine and i can see all my functions that i wrote in my.dll the only issue is now i do not know how to debug becuase i do not know how to attach visual studio to the instance of excel i opened up seperately. my question is: 1 how can i attach visual studio to an already opened instance of Excel or 2 how can i hit F5 and still make Excel pick up the required tp.dll from the directory specified in the PATH variable before it starts to deploy my.dll. any of these two will allow my to step through the code for the purpose of debugging. thanks in advance.

• How to get VC# to rebuild auto-generated .cs files?

  I imagine this question has been asked and answered, but I cannot find it. I wanted to make a simple GUI to interface to a windows 7 command. I usually use Wx, but since this was to be a windows-only thing, I decided to see if I could whip it out real fast using Visual C# 2010 Express, which I had never used before. Things started off just great. I created a form, put a few buttons and text boxes and such on it, and hit Debug. It came up and ran just like that. No muss, no fuss. So I then designed the form just the way I wanted it, renamed the controls from "Button1" and so forth to meaningful names. But now it's a mess. By clicking around, I discovered that VC# had auto-generated two files called Form1.cs and Form1.Designer.cs. The later contains the bindings between functions and the events generated from user-clicks etc., and the former contains no-op code for those functions, for me to complete. Problem is, the names are all still the original "Button1" and so forth, not the new ones, and the new controls I added after running the first time do not appear at all. I want it to regenerate all that stuff afresh from the finished form. How to?

  If you have large files in a content source that is being indexed by Sharepoint you might run into the following error message: “The file reached the maximum download limit. Check that the full text of the document can be meaningfully crawled.” This is usually caused because SharePoint’s MaxDownloadSize setting is set lower than the size of the file you are attempting to index. You can increase this value, restart the service then kick off a full crawl in order to fix this issue, but SharePoint 2007 and 2010 have different methods for accomplishing this task.   Sharepoint 2007 Open up the Registry editor and increase the MaxDownloadSize value to a number (in MB) higher than the largest file being indexed. You can find this at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Search\1.0\Gathering Manager After you increase the size, cycle the search service and kick off a full crawl of the content source in question.   Sharepoint 2010 With SharePoint 2010 you can use PowerShell via the Sharepoint 2010 Console in order to change the MaxDownloadSize. • HTTP Builder/Groovy - lost 302 (redirect) handling?

  Dear All: I am reading here http://groovy.codehaus.org/modules/http-builder/doc/handlers.html "In cases where a response sends a redirect status code, this is handled internally by Apache HttpClient, which by default will simply follow the redirect by re-sending the request to the new URL. You do not need to do anything special in order to follow 302 responses." This seems to work fine when I simply use the get() or post() methods without a closure. However, when I use a closure, I seem to lose 302 handling. Is there some way I can handle this myself? Thank you p.s. • SharePoint 2010 Center and Fixed Width of all content on page including the ribbon

  All, I am trying to make the width of the sharepoint 2010 web site to be within a fixed width and centered across the screen. I would like for it to be 800px and centered. When i do this, it seems like it starts to work until the ribbion bar renters.   The Overview I am working on a Continuous Integration build of a MFC appliction via CruiseControl.net and VS2010. When building my .sln, a "Visual Studio" CCNet task (<devenv/>) works, but a simple MSBuild wrapper script (see below) run via the CCNet <msbuild/> task fails with errors like: error RC1015: cannot open include file 'winres.h'.. error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afx.h': No such file or directory The Question How can I adjust the build environment of my msbuild wrapper so that the application builds correctly? (Pretty clearly the MFC paths aren't right for the msbuild environment, but how do i fix it for MSBuild+VS2010+MFC+CCNet?) Background Details We have successfully upgraded an MFC application (.exe with some MFC extension .dlls) to Visual Studio 2010 and can compile the application without issue on developer machines. Now I am working on compiling the application on the CI server environment I did a full installation of VS2010 (Professional) on the build server. In this way, I knew everything I needed would be on the machine (one way or another) and that this would be consistent with developer machines. VS2010 is correctly installed on the CI server, and the devenv task works as expected I now have a wrapper MSBuild script that does some extended version processing and then builds the .sln for the application via an MSBuild task. Given the vs2010 msbuild support for visual c++ projects (.vcxproj), shouldn't msbuilding a solution be pretty close to compiling via visual studio? But how do I do that? Am I setting Environment variables? Registry settings? I can see how one can inject additional directories in some cases, but this seems to need a more systemic configuration at the compiler defaults level. Update 1 This appears to only ever happen in two cases: resource compilation (rc.exe), and precompiled header (stdafx.h) compilation, and only for certain projects? I was thinking it was across the board, but indeed it appears only to be in these cases. I guess I will keep digging and hope someone has some insight they would be willing to share...

The compile is a success but it does not catch the view compilation errors. I have Vs2010 ultimate, vs 2008 developer+database edition on this machine. So either it compiles ignoring the errors with some combinations of the fixes I've tried, or it errors with Error 410 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. • Rtti accessing fields and properties in complex data structures

  As already discussed in Rtti data manipulation and consistency in Delphi 2010 a consistency between the original data and rtti values can be reached by accessing members by using a pair of TRttiField and an instance pointer. This would be very easy in case of a simple class with only basic member types (like e.g. integers or strings). But what if we have structured field types? Here is an example: TIntArray = array [0..1] of Integer; TPointArray = array [0..1] of Point; TExampleClass = class private FPoint : TPoint; FAnotherClass : TAnotherClass; FIntArray : TIntArray; FPointArray : TPointArray; public property Point : TPoint read FPoint write FPoint; //.... and so on end; For an easy access of Members I want to buil a tree of member-nodes, which provides an interface for getting and setting values, getting attributes, serializing/deserializing values and so on. TMemberNode = class private FMember : TRttiMember; FParent : TMemberNode; FInstance : Pointer; public property Value : TValue read GetValue write SetValue; //uses FInstance end; So the most important thing is getting/setting the values, which is done - as stated before - by using the GetValue and SetValue functions of TRttiField. So what is the Instance for FPoint members? Let's say Parent is the Node for TExample class, where the instance is known and the member is a field, then Instance would be: FInstance := Pointer (Integer (Parent.Instance) + TRttiField (FMember).Offset); But what if I want to know the Instance for a record property? There is no offset in this case. So is there a better solution to get a pointer to the data? For the FAnotherClass member, the Instance would be: FInstance := Parent.Value.AsObject; So far the solution works, and data manipulation can be done by using rtti or the original types, without losing information. But things get harder, when working with arrays. Especially the second array of Points. How can I get the instance for the members of points in this case?

• web.config transforms not being applied on either publish or build installation package

  Today I started playing with the web.config transforms in VS 2010. To begin with, I attempted the same hello world example that features in a lot of the blog posts on this topic - updating a connection string. I created the minimal example shown below (and similar to the one found in this blog). The problem is that whenever I do a right-click - "Publish", or a right-click - "Build Deployment Package" on the .csproj file, I'm not getting the correct output. Rather than a transformed web.config, I'm getting no web.config, and instead the two transform files are included. What am I doing wrong? Any help gratefully received! • Creating .lib files in CUDA Toolkit 5

  I am taking my first faltering steps with CUDA Toolkit 5.0 RC using VS2010. Separate compilation has me confused. I tried to set up a project as a Static Library (.lib), but when I try to build it, it does not create a device-link.obj and I don't understand why. For instance, there are 2 files: A caller function that uses a function f #include "thrust\host_vector.h" #include "thrust\device_vector.h" using namespace thrust::placeholders; extern __device__ double f(double x); struct f_func { __device__ double operator()(const double& x) const { return f(x); } }; void test(const int len, double * data, double * res) { thrust::device_vector<double> d_data(data, data + len); thrust::transform(d_data.begin(), d_data.end(), d_data.begin(), f_func()); thrust::copy(d_data.begin(),d_data.end(), res); } And a library file that defines f __device__ double f(double x) { return x+2.0; } If I set the option generate relocatable device code to No, the first file will not compile due to unresolved extern function f. If I set it to -rdc, it will compile, but does not produce a device-link.obj file and so the linker fails. If I put the definition of f into the first file and delete the second it builds successfully, but now it isn't separate compilation anymore. How can I build a static library like this with separate source files? [Updated here] I called the first caller file "caller.cu" and the second "libfn.cu". • SharePoint 2010 BDC Model Deployment Issue: “The default web application could not be determined.”

  Yesterday I tried to deploy a Business Data Connectivity Model project created in Visual Studio 2010 to my SharePoint 2010 test server (all RTM versions), but during the deployment of the solution, SharePoint threw my following error: Add Solution:  Adding solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...  Deploying solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': The default web application could not be determined. Set the SiteUrl property in feature BCSDemo2_Feature1 to the URL of the desired site and retry activation.Parameter name: properties A little bit of searching on the internet taught me that I was not the only one having this issue, actually Paul Andrew describes how to solve it in this post. Although Paul describes what to do, his explanation is not, let’s say, very elaborate. :-) So let’s describe the steps a little bit more in detail: Create a new Business Data Connectivity Model project in Visual Studio 2010 and (optionally) implement all your code, change the model etc. When you try to deploy you get the error mentioned above. To fix it, in the Solution Explorer, navigate to and open the Feature1.Template.xml file (the name could be different if you decided to give your feature a different name of course). Add the following XML in the Feature element that’s already there (replace the Value with the URL of your site of course):  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties>The resulting XML should look like:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><Feature xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties></Feature> Deploy the solution, now without any issues. :-) What happens now, is that when Visual Studio creates the SharePoint Solution (the WSP file), it will use the Feature template XML to generate the Feature manifest, which will now include the missing property.
