• Felix Baumgartner Skydives from the Edge of Space [Video]

  Yesterday Felix Baumgartner broke the record for highest skydive by leaping out of a capsule 128,100 feet above the Earth. Check out his jump in the following videos. After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. • JavaOne Latin America Underway

  JavaOne Latin America started officially today, but lots of networking has already happened. Last night some JUG leaders, Java Champions, and members of the Oracle Java development and marketing teams had dinner together. The conversation ranged from the new direction of JavaFX to how to improve JUG attendance. Maricio Leal shared the idea some Brazilian JUGs have of putting Java Evangelists and experts on a boat and having them visit JUGs on cities along the Amazon river.  We discussed ideas, and shared dessert pizza. It was the perfect community get together! If you see Brazilian Java Man Bruno Souza, ask him what he is bringing to the party.Today, at JavaOne Latin America, all the sessions were full, and developers were spilling into the hallways. Session content was selected with the help of 14 Java thought leaders from Latin America. JavaOne Program Committee Chair, Sharat Chander, said "I'm thrilled that at this JavaOne over half of the content is coming from the community." Between sessions, developers take advantage of the Oracle Technology Network lounge to grab a snack and use their laptops.  OTN LoungeIt promises to be a great JavaOne.

• Is Tax Localization a good use for Workflow Foundation?

  Scenario: We have both Winforms and MVC code that is being used to work on a nation wide multi-user platform that does lots of logistics for lots of users. Tax rules change per state and even per city or county. These tax rules make a huge difference for our industry. The other issue is that rules can change based on legislation. The system will have to handle cases where before a date it works one way and then different after that date. This changeover will need to be entered into the system and tested before that date comes. Proposed Solution: Use Workflow Foundation to create a time based system where our users can change and add rules that change the way taxes are calculated. Question: I have not used Workflow Foundation and searching has returned books to look at but not a lot of examples of people using this technology successfully. Is my scenario a good use of Workflow Foundation?(I think so.) If you have any experience with Workflow Foundation, any tips on making this work well?

• WebCenter .NET Accelerator - Microsoft SharePoint Data via WSRP

  Platforms in the enterprise will never be homogeneous. As much as any vendor would enjoy having their single development or application technology be exclusively adopted by customers, too much legacy, time, education, innovation and vertical business needs exist to make using a single platform practical. JAVA and .NET are the two industry application platform heavyweights and more often than not, business users are leveraging various systems in their day to day activities that incorporate applications developed on top of both platforms. BEA Systems acquired Plumtree Software to complete their "liquid" view of data, stressing that regardless of a particular source system heterogeneous data could interoperate at not only through layers that allowed for data aggregation, but also at the "glass" or UI layer. The technical components that allowed the integration at the glass thrive today at Oracle, helping WebCenter to provide a rich composite application framework. Oracle Ensemble and the Oracle .NET Application Accelerator allow WebCenter to consume and interact with the UI layers provided by .NET applications and a series of other technologies. The beauty of the .NET accelerator is that it can consume any .NET application and act as a Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) producer. I recently had a chance to leverage the .NET accelerator to expose a ASP .NET 2.0 (C#) application in the WebCenter UI (pictured above) and wanted to share a few tips to help others get started with similar integrations. I was using two virtual machines for the exercise - one with Windows Server 2003, running SharePoint and the other running WebCenter Spaces 11g. For my sample application data I ended up using SharePoint 2007 lists and calendars (MOSS 2007) to supply results using a .NET API for SharePoint.

  I have opened this thread because I upgraded to ubuntu 12.10 beta (kernel 3.5) and I have a problem with VMware Workstation 9: Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to Does anyone have the same problem? This is a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10 (daily build). I installed VMware 9 and patched but it's not working. I can't patch correctly and get the things to build correctly. My laptop is a Lenovo T420 with Nvidia Optimus Technology. This message is shown when I try to apply the patch: Stopping VMware services: VMware Authentication Daemon done At least one instance of VMware VMX is still running. Please stop all running instances of VMware VMX first. VMware Authentication Daemon done Unable to stop services How can I stop the VMware services to apply the patch? This message is shown when I try to patch again: ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting But VMware is not working, and I can’t uninstall.

  During the last months I and Alberto worked in several projects using Analysis Services Tabular and we had to face real world issues, such as complex queries, large data volume, frequent data updates and so on. Sometime we faced the challenge of comparing Tabular performance with SQL Server. It seemed a non-sense, because even if the same core xVelocity technology is implemented in both products (SQL Server 2012 uses ColumnStore indexes, whereas Analysis Services 2012 uses VertiPaq), we initially assumed that the better optimization for the in-memory engine used by Analysis Services would have been always better than SQL Server. However, we discovered several important things: Processing time might be different and having data on SQL Server could make ColumnStore way faster for processing. Partitioning in SQL Server might be much more effective for query performance than Analysis Services. A single query can scale easily on more processor on SQL Server, whereas in Analysis Services the formula engine is single-threaded and could be a bottleneck for certain queries. In case of a large workload with many concurrent users, storage engine cache in Analysis Services could be a big advantage over SQL Server, especially for scalability As you can see, these considerations are not always obvious and you might be tempted to make other assumptions based on these information. Well, don’t do that. Before anything else, read the whitepaper VertiPaq vs ColumnStore Comparison written by Alberto Ferrari. Then, measure your workload. Finally, make some conclusion. But don’t make too many assumptions. You might be wrong, as we did at the beginning of this journey.

  Windows Azure is a platform that allows you to write software, run software, or use software that we've already written. We provide lots of resources to help you do that - many can be found right here in this blog series. There are two primary resources you can use, and it's important to understand what they are and what they do. The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) Actually, this isn't one resource. We have SDK's for multiple development environments, such as Visual Studio and also Eclipse, along with SDK's for iOS, Android and other environments. Windows Azure is a "back end", so almost any technology or front end system can use it to solve a problem. The SDK's are primarily for development. In the case of Visual Studio, you'll get a runtime environment for Windows Azure which allows you to develop, test and even run code all locally - you do not have to be connected to Windows Azure at all, until you're ready to deploy. You'll also get a few samples and codeblocks, along with all of the libraries you need to code with Windows Azure in .NET, PHP, Ruby, Java and more.   Over the last few weeks the product management team has been working on a webcast series that is airing in EMEA.  It is a 5-episode series where we talk about different features of WebLogic and show how to build applications that take advantage of these features.  Each session is focused at a different layer of the technology stack, and you can find the schedule below.   Another week has thankfully passed by, so it is time to take a break and have some fun. This week’s game tests your ability to light up the whole Christmas tree…can you figure out the correct wiring configuration? Christmas Tree Light Up The object of the game is simple…light up all of the bulbs on the Christmas tree. While the game may look quick and easy at first you will need to do some thinking and experimenting to come up with the correct wiring configuration. The instructions are very simple…just click on any of the wiring sections or bulbs to rotate them. Keep in mind that you may have to click a few times to line the wiring sections or bulbs up as desired since the rotation is always clockwise. Note: You will need use all of the wiring sections available to completely light the tree up. Each time you will be presented with a different starting setup coming from your power source. • Oracle IRM video demonstration of seperating duties of document security

  One thing an Information Rights Management technology should do well is separate out three main areas of responsibility.The business process of defining and controlling the classifications to which content is secured and the definition of the roles employees, customers, partners and contractors have when accessing secured content. Allow IT to manage the server and perform the role of authorizing the creation of new classifications to meet business needs but yet once the classification has been created and handed off to the business, IT no longer plays a role on the ongoing management. Empower the business to take ownership of classifications to which their own content is secured. For example an employee who is leading an acquisition project should be responsible for defining who has access to confidential project documents. This person should be able to manage the rights users have in the classification and also be the point of contact for those wishing to gain rights. Oracle IRM has since it's creation in the late 1990's had this core model at the heart of its design. Due in part to the important seperation of rights from the documents themselves, Oracle IRM places the right functionality within the right parts of the business. For example some IRM technologies allow the end user to make decisions about what users can print, edit or save a secured document. This in practice results in a wide variety of content secured with a plethora of options that don't conform to any policy. With Oracle IRM users choose from a list of classifications to which they have been given the ability to secure information against. Their role in the classification was given to them by the business owner of the classification, yet the definition of the role resides within the realm of corporate security who own the overall business classification policies. It is this type of design and philosophy in Oracle IRM that makes it an enterprise solution that works beyond a few users and a few secured documents to hundreds of thousands of users and millions of documents. • Attend my GTC sessions

  The last GTC conference in the US was 2 years ago and I was there as an attendee. You may recall from that blog post that we were running UX studies at the time. It really feels great 2 years later, to be back at GTC presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress that includes input from those early studies. If you are attending GTC (in person or virtually later), be sure to watch my two-part session. Part 1 is S0242 on Wednesday 5pm and part 2 is S0244 on Thursday 10am. Here is the shared abstract for both parts: Harnessing GPU Compute with C++ AMP C++ AMP is an open specification for taking advantage of accelerators like the GPU. In this session we will explore the C++ AMP implementation in Microsoft Visual Studio 11 Beta. After a quick overview of the technology understanding its goals and its differentiation compared with other approaches, we will dive into the programming model and its modern C++ API. This is a code heavy, interactive, two-part session, where every part of the library will be explained. Demos will include showing off the richest parallel and GPU debugging story on the market, in the upcoming Visual Studio release. See you there! • Learning advanced java skills

  I've been programming in java for a while and I really like the language, I've mostly just done game programming, but I want to get a feel for some of the more commonly used api's and frameworks and just get a generally more well-rounded grasp of the language and the common libraries in the current job market. From what I found things like spring, hibernate, and GWT are pretty in demand right now. I looked at some tutorials online and they weren't hard to follow but I really felt like I had no context for what I was learning - I had no idea how any of it would be use in a real work environment. I know nothing can rival the benefit I'd get from actual work experience but that's not an option for me right now, I need another way to learn these technologies in a way where I'll at least feel comfortable working with them and know what I'm doing beyond just understanding what code does what. I checked out a few books but they were all really old(like pre-2006, am I right to assume those books would be kind of out of date today?) or required experience with libraries that I didn't have and can't get. I hate getting stuck looking for the best resource to learn something instead of spending my time actually learning. All I really want is someone to point me to a resource(website or ebook) that is aimed at already experienced java developers and will not only teach me some interesting useful java technology(anything that is useful, I dont know much outside of graphics libraries and game related things so I was thinking some database or web programming api's) but also give me a good perspective of it and leave me feeling confident that I could actually use what I learned on a practical application. If my post makes you think I'm not yet experienced to be learning these things, which I doubted earlier today but am now starting to question, then what do you think is the next step for me? I just want to get better at java. Thanks everyone

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to.
