  • How can I choose between Linux and Windows hosting? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am a relative beginner when it comes to choosing web servers and hosting plans. I'm about to signup for a hosting plan with GoDaddy. My main requirement is ColdFusion and MySQL. The plans on offer include Linux and Windows based plans. Which one should I choose, and why? I don't have a lot of requirements other than what I mentioned above. I never used Linux before but I doubt I'll ever need to do anything beyond tampering with my account. What are the main advantages of one over the other?

  • Quest for Multi-Development Web Platforms: Titanium, OpenLaszlo or others if any ? Which to prefer ?

    In my quest for Multidevelopement Web Platforms (Desktop Browser and Mobile), I have encountered only 2 : Titanium Openlaszlo Only two. So are there any others ? I have looked at Titanium, seems very promising but I wasn't even able to create a project as It crashed on my windows 7 PC. As for Openlaszlo I heard about it years ago; OpenLaszlo can generate both flash and html. I wasn't really interested until now as I didn't really have any real need for being multiplatform. Flash alone could suffice with Web Desktop. Did you try any of them ?

  • Swapping two jQuery draggable list items not working properly (with jsFiddle example)

    The minimalist working example below swaps the two boxes when box 'one' is dragged and dropped on box 'two'. The problem is that when box 'one' is dropped, its style has 'top' & 'left' values causing it to be placed away from where it should drop. Its class includes 'ui-draggable-dragging'. It seems the top & left values are related to the amount the elements were dragged before the drop. And the dragging was 'interrupted' hence the residual 'ui-draggable-dragging' class?   • Is ignoring clients data during an automatic upgrading acceptable?

    I recently faced a deletion of my calendar and notes data inside a third party application ( Horde ) on my online space. When I told the web hosting provider they replied that they were doing an upgrade to system software (!!) and client third party applications are not within their reach or backup policy. They don't even have a backup of my data. Is this practice acceptable from a web hosting provider, even for an individual clients ? I know that backing up my data is my responsibility but I anticipated that backup copies done by the host would be available when needed.

  • No sound in any web browser(s)

    Hello I recently tried to compile and update alsa from source via this guide http://www.stchman.com/alsa_update.html. Afterwards the sound in any web browser I open Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Chromium, Iron there is no sound on any pages. I went back through the script listed on the site and found where it had installed the drivers and deleted it and than re-installed alsa via synaptic. Though I still have no sound in my browser(s). All system sounds work as they are supposed to only web sounds don't work.   • Where to place web.xml outside WAR file for secure redirect?

    I am running Tomcat 7 and am deploying a bunch of applications delivered to me by a third party as WAR files. I'd like to force some of those apps to always use SSL. (All the "SSL" apps are in one service; other apps outside this discussion are in another service.) I've figured out how to use conf\web.xml to redirect apps from HTTP to HTTPS, but that applies to all applications hosted by Tomcat. I've also figured out how to put web.xml in an unpacked app's web-inf directory; that does the trick for that specific app, but runs the risk of being overwritten if our vendor gives us a new war file to deploy. I've also tried placing the web.xml file in various places under conf\service\host, or under appbase, but none seem to work. Is it possible to redirect some apps to SSL without forcing all apps to redirect, or to put the web.xml file inside the extracted WAR file?     Most of programming languages (Server-side languages for web development) needs a learning curve and requires some time to learn. However, I'm sure there is a difference between them. So, for example you can master the 'X' language in less time than the 'Y' language. I'm a beginner in web development, meaning that I just know HTML and CSS and now want to choose the right tool for building dynamic sites. What I'm looking for is a language that is easy to master in less time than other languages. So, is there a language that can suit my needs? If so, please let me know about what should I learn in it? (for example, which frameworks?, libraries?, IDEs?, databases?, etc). In the end, I don't want to regret my choice of the language and want to learn solid basics in it and in programming in general.

  • How can Excel 2007 / 2010 consume a REST web service?

    What options exist to consume a REST web service from within Excel 2007 / 2010? I can use XML Maps to consume a basic XML list, but that doesn't let me build a dynamic URL (so I could include parameters). For example, I can add an XML Map to Excel for http://machine/service/level/5 and display the values in the workbook just fine - no problem there. The real question is, how can I dynamically change the /5 part of the URL to come from another cell in excel? That way I can have a couple of cells that have the options (what ID, what name, etc.) and whenever those values change (ideally) a new dynamic URL would be constructed and the XML map would be refreshed. Is such a thing possible? Does anyone else have a better way to take some parameters, call a web service (REST or SOAP, I'm not picky) and shove the results back into excel for further manipulation?

    I am building an application in java swing and I am using the following code to give the UI a native OS look try { UIManager.setLookAndFeel( UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } On a OS X, the look is fine, but on windows (XP and 7) the buttons look like this. I have used this exact same code on other projects and it works fine. But in this particular project I get a completely different look. Thanks in advance!

    At my work place, we use an external client's web application monitor and respond to support tickets of our clients. the problem with that application is that it does not house a field to enter the actual effort (hours worked on a particular ticket) to be stored in the database. What is needed to write a plug-in for Internet Explorer that would get triggered on a button click on a certain webpage and save some data in an external database? That is, if the support personnel is closing the ticket after resolving it, is it possible to invoke that plugin that asks the personnel to enter the effort spent on that ticket and store it in an external database? We can't modify the web application as it is vendor supplied and not an in-house product.

  • Accessing contents of a file in a web-application without uploading.

    As far as I can tell, it is impossible to access the content of files on the user's computer in a web application without first uploading to the server, then re-downloading to user, unless some sort of plug-in is used. (Flash, etc.) Ideally, the user would upload the file directly to localstorage and then scripts would have a chance to process/display/validate/filter without the user having to wait on an upload. Are there any features in upcoming web standards such as html5 that will allow this? If not, why has there been no effort to make this possible, and how can I work around it without getting stuck with plugins?

  • Cost of Web Server that hosted and delivered text only

    We are developing an application that needs a web server to interact with the two (or more) entities involved. They will not ever see anything on the web, but the server is required for the transfer of data between them. It's sort of a holding point. Now, the only thing the server is going to be holding is textual data. The two entities are going to be doing the work with the data. I was wondering what the cost of this type of server would be. Since it would be JUST a database with no front end, would it make sense to employ a service through Amazon or Google that just holds data for me to access instead of buying a server and making my own database? The amount of data can grow very large however it's only text, and all data over a day old will be deleted for the most part every day. Thanks!
