  • What are the advantages of mainframes?

    The downsides of Mainframes is well trodden ground; expensive, legacy, dwindling community, etc. I'm not particularly interested in the downsides, but I am curious if there are any benefits to mainframe hardware/software over the current Intel/AMD & Linux/Windows environment. I've been told that MFs are particularly good (and better than current servers) at heavy I/O loads. Is this still true?

To get more from this experience i want to integrate a GUI to overwrite the one FreeGLUT uses, now my question is this: is this thing possible and what library should i use?     First time running Ubuntu 11.04 and getting used to Unity, I decided to install proprietary drivers for my Nvidia graphic card. The output of lspci | grep VGA is: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0df5 (rev a1) If I activate the driver that is "recommended", next time I try to login in a Unity session it just changes to the classic.   • GUI for DirectX

    I'm looking for a GUI library built on top of DirectX- preferably 9, but I can also do 11. I've looked at stuff like DXUT, but it's way too much for me- I'm only needing some UI controls which I would rather not write (and debug) myself, and their need to keep a C-compatible API is definitely a big downside. I'd rather look at UI libs that are designed to be integrated into an existing DirectX-based system, rather than forming the basis of a system. Any recommendations?

  • Debugging HLSL for Windows 8 application [migrated]

    i'm currently in the process of creating a Windows 8 applicaiton using SharpDX (the managed c# directx wrapper). However I have ran into problems with one of my shaders and I want to know if its possible to debug such applications. PIX doesn't seem to work of directX apps as the executable does not like opening directly, and the new visual studio graphics debugging toolkit in VS2012 always states "unable to start the experiment" when I try to capture any information about my session.   • Problem with RecordMyDesktop program

    I am trying to record some tutorials using RecordMyDesktop application. The problem is the video becomes jagged and unusable as you can see from the screenshot I have taken while playing a saved video. I don't know what can be the problem, but I guess it has something to do with my graphics driver. My laptop is using Intel HD 3000 series and I couldn't find any update for it. If you know what might be the problem and how to solve it I will really appreciate it!

  • Why is multithreading often preferred for improving performance?

    I have a question, it's about why programmers seems to love concurrency and multi-threaded programs in general. I'm considering 2 main approaches here: an async approach basically based on signals, or just an async approach as called by many papers and languages like the new C# 5.0 for example, and a "companion thread" that manages the policy of your pipeline a concurrent approach or multi-threading approach I will just say that I'm thinking about the hardware here and the worst case scenario, and I have tested this 2 paradigms myself, the async paradigm is a winner at the point that I don't get why people 90% of the time talk about multi-threading when they want to speed up things or make a good use of their resources. I have tested multi-threaded programs and async program on an old machine with an Intel quad-core that doesn't offer a memory controller inside the CPU, the memory is managed entirely by the motherboard, well in this case performances are horrible with a multi-threaded application, even a relatively low number of threads like 3-4-5 can be a problem, the application is unresponsive and is just slow and unpleasant. A good async approach is, on the other hand, probably not faster but it's not worst either, my application just waits for the result and doesn't hangs, it's responsive and there is a much better scaling going on. I have also discovered that a context change in the threading world it's not that cheap in real world scenario, it's in fact quite expensive especially when you have more than 2 threads that need to cycle and swap among each other to be computed. On modern CPUs the situation it's not really that different, the memory controller it's integrated but my point is that an x86 CPUs is basically a serial machine and the memory controller works the same way as with the old machine with an external memory controller on the motherboard. The context switch is still a relevant cost in my application and the fact that the memory controller it's integrated or that the newer CPU have more than 2 core it's not bargain for me. For what i have experienced the concurrent approach is good in theory but not that good in practice, with the memory model imposed by the hardware, it's hard to make a good use of this paradigm, also it introduces a lot of issues ranging from the use of my data structures to the join of multiple threads. Also both paradigms do not offer any security abut when the task or the job will be done in a certain point in time, making them really similar from a functional point of view. According to the X86 memory model, why the majority of people suggest to use concurrency with C++ and not just an async approach ? Also why not considering the worst case scenario of a computer where the context switch is probably more expensive than the computation itself ?

  • Number of processes named 'doodle'

    I have ben using 12.10 for a few days. Just upgraded it from 12.04. This comp of mine, which has a 4GB RAM and 64 bit intel processor, just goes slow randomly. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F6 and login through a command prompt, I see a number of processes using - ps -A I get many instances of a process named 'doodle' running. So many that I have to 'pkill' them by hand. Any idea why this is happening?

  • Screen will not load in 11.04 alpha 3

    After updating from 10.10, there were no problems everything updated fine. I restarted the computer and selected Ubuntu from the boot menu but nothing came. it only shows a a black screen and it allows me to type. I have a feeling that this might be to do with the graphics driver, but how would i get a driver if nothing shows? I have ati radeon 5450 which runs with Catalyst Control Center on Windows. How can fix this?

    I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my emachine e625 AMD64 (TF-20) with an ATI RS690m X1200 graphics card but I didn't have 3D acceleration. The open-source driver works, except for any video effects or acceleration… I've downloaded the driver from ATI and followed the installation instructions and here is the result: Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version default:v2:x86_64:lib32::none:3.0.0-17-generic; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro What did I do wrong?

I opened Synaptic Package manager and installed the following: nvidia-common nvidia-settings-update nvidia-common nvidia-current nvidia-current-updates The following were installed before(when unity launcher looked normal): jockey-common psensor nvidia-settings jockey-gtk xserver-xorg-video-nouveau My intention was to use the right Nvidia drivers. But apparently it didn't rightly install the drivers and now I have Unity 2D running!

After an upgrade, you always want to make sure that the compatibility options (which have much to do with how NULLs and other objects are treated) is at what you expect. For the most part, as long as the application can handle it, I set my compatibility levels to the latest version. For SQL Server 2008, that was “10.0” or “10”. You can do this with the ALTER DATABASE command or you can just right-click the database and select “Properties” and then “Database Options” in SQL Server Management Studio. To check the database compatibility level, I use this query: SELECT name, cmptlevel FROM sys.sysdatabases When I did that this morning I saw that the databases (all of them) were at 10.0 – not 10.5 like the Instance. That’s expected – we didn’t revise the database format up with the Instance for this particular release. Didn’t want to catch you by surprise on that. While your databases should be at the “proper” level for your situation, you can’t rely on the compatibility level to indicate the Instance level.   • Can't start ubuntu on Vaio Z

    Hello, I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 32bit on this pc. I have both tried with Wubi from Windows and from USB stick, but after the installation process when I select to boot Ubuntu the screen becomes black and nothing happens (btw I can hear the cpu running)! Notice that maybe it is something related to the graphic card of the pc, since when I use Ubuntu in live mode or during the installation process all the graphics and colors are messed up as if there wasn't an appropriate diriver... What can I do?? Thanks

  • Windows Server 2008 in KVM

    I've been working on getting a Windows Server 2008 KVM in my linux box running Ubuntu Server 12.04. I've got virt-install and virt-manager installed, got the install up and running via virt-install --connect qemu:///system -n winsvr2008 -r 1024 --vcpus=1 --disk path=/home/pwnd/vm/2008.img,size=30 -c /home/pwnd/en_windows_server_2008_with_sp2_x86_dvd_342333.iso --graphics vnc,listen=192.168.1.127 --noautoconsole --os-type=windows --os-variant=win2k8 --network=bridge:virbr0 --hvm -v and virsh vncdisplay winsvr2008 I can connect and view, but upon starting, I get hung up on please wait right after clicking Install. Any ideas?
