  • How to restore a windows 7 system from a secondary drive

    I have a stationary computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The primary (SSD) hard drive seems to have stopped working completely, it is not even visible in BIOS. The computer has a secondary hard drive (non-SSD, NTFS, 2TB). I have had Windows backup running and saving backups to that secondary drive. I am planning to buy a new SSD drive to replace the faulty one. I want to restore the backup to this new SSD drive. What is the most straightforward way to do this? A step-by-step description would be greatly appreciated. Further information: I have a Windows install DVD and the computer has a DVD-drive. The secondary drive is not bootable, so I cannot currently access it. The new SSD drive will probably not be identical to the original, so it might need different drivers

He says that: The first thing I usually do is disable system restore. Some REALLY nasty malware hides in there and is very difficult to delete. As far as rescue media, I make a full backup image. It doesn't directly address the question so it's a comment not an answer, but I thought it was worth noting What type of malware can hide there, and how is that possible as the restore info must be stored with a checksome to make sure it's not modified, right?

  • Tri-head linux system with Xmonad: is it possible to have HW acceleration

    What means there exists to have three monitors, all controlled by Xmonad and have hardware 3D acceleration as well? I had the pleasure of using three monitors earlier this year, and while Xmonad and Xinerama handle three monitors easily, I had to throw in an extra display driver, and also let go of Nvidia's own TwinView (which is a hack on Xinerama). This left me with no HW acceleration and some flickering as double buffering wouldn't work with certain applications. However, the three monitors handle so beautifully that I had hard time coming back to two. I understand the easiest way to achieve HW-accelerated tri-head combo is to split into two Xorgs. I wouldn't be able to switch windows between the Xorgs, so I'm not really into this solution. What's more, having a cheap and old PCI card along with even slightly better PCIe seemed to slow things down. Even if I occasionally disabled the third monitor from Xorg configure, I couldn't get HW acceleration to work. Only after I physically disconnected the old PCI card, I could get the games back in business. Would a Matrox Dual/Tri-head2go and a powerful Nvidia GPU do the trick? I understand Xmonad can be configured to "believe" that a "single" (as Dualhead2Go will merge) 3360x1050 display is actually two different ones? So that Xmonad's Mod-w and Mod-e would work properly there.

    Ive been working on some command line stuff with an external developer through team viewer for work, to interact with th CL i use terminal on OSX, when working with the developer i was always watching what they were doing and i also have all the bash history. Usually upon opening terminal i get something like this Last login: Tue Sep 17 21:33:02 on ttys001 You have mail. unknown-5c:00:00:00:00:00:~ sam$ (note ive replaced some characters in the last line with 00) But today when i opened up terminal and i get this Last login: Mon Oct 21 16:49:35 on ttys000 You have mail. richies-ipad:~ sam$ Note it now says richies-ipad - any idea why this is ? I dont know any one called richie let alone let them have access to my machine. Is this something to be worried about - the fact that someone has enough access to change that ? Also what does the ttys001 part on the first line mean ?

I sure could use one, so much that I'm even tempted to write one, but lack the time to do so. EDIT: I am not looking for monitoring application. I'm looking for a asp.net page that will show me all the relevant information about my server (like vpsinfo) without the hassle.

    I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.

  • iPhone OS: KVO: Why is my Observer only getting notified at applicationDidfinishLaunching

    I am basically trying to implement an achievement tracking setup in my app. I have a managedObjectModel class called StatTracker to keep track of all sorts of stats and I want my Achievement tracking class to be notified when those stats change so I can check them against a value and see if the user has earned an achievement. I've tried to impliment KVO and I think I'm pretty close to making it happen but the problem I'm running into is this: So in the appDelegate i have an Ivar for my Achievement tracker class, I attach it as an observer to a property value of my statTracker core data entity in the applicationDidFinishLaunching method. I know its making the connection because I've been able to trigger a UIAlert in my AchievementTracker instance, and I've put several log statements that should be triggered whenever the value on the StatTracker's property changes. the log statement appears only once at the application launch. I'm wondering if I'm missing something in the whole object lifecycle scheme of things, I just don't understand why the observer stops getting notified of changes after the applicationDidFinishLaunching method has run. Does it have something to do with the scope of the AchievementTracker reference or more likely the reference to my core data StatTracker is going away once that method finishes up. I guess I'm not sure the right place to place these if that is the case. Would love some help.     My desktop computer has been upgraded to Windows 7 and ever since whenever I start it up, it resets the date and time to 2007. I tried changing the battery on the motherboard thinking that it would solve, but its still the same. I didn't face this trouble when Windows XP was installed on this computer. Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Strip X Window System from OpenRD (Fedora core 8)

    I just got myself an OpenRD Client embedded box with an old Fedora 8 on it. Runs like a charm, only problem is that the default install has X on it, which I would like to remove in order to free up some space. I found a similar post here on the same topic, but yum groupremove doesn't work in my case, yum grouplist returns nothing, so I presume that no groups are defined. I don't know if this is because fedora 8 didn't have any groups, or because the OpenRD build is special in some way. In any case, I would like some tips on which package(s) to remove in order to remove an as big chunk of X as possible. Thanks in advance.

    Has anyone else seen or heard of any issues with NSTask in 10.6? This code worked fine yesterday, and is not working today. NSTask *task = [converter task]; [task waitUntilExit]; NSLog(@"Task did complete"); The task does what it's supposed to do (I checked the output and it's fine), but the program will wait indefinitely at the waitUntilExit method. I have a few unit tests that use similar code, they all had passed previously, but as of yesterday, they are no longer working.

    Hi, The company I am working now has developed a Rule-based Expert System. It is a web-based system and supports Flow Chart, Decision Table, Fuzzy Rules and Forward Chaining Rules. It is something like iLog but less complex and powerful. However, one serious problem we are facing now is that we have NO CUSTOMER so far. We have spent 4 yrs to develop that product. Because my company is a start-up and has no reference, no one is confident in our product. Without feedback, we cannot improve our product.     I prefer the sound scheme of Windows 7 HP to be set to "No Sounds" ALL the time. The problem is, when I switch themes, the themes switch sound schemes also. I know I can go in and disable/change to "No Sounds" every time by hand, but is there a way to turn it off and keep it off, regardless of the theme? Thanks!

    Hello, I am running dd-wrt and I configured it's dns server to resolve a few hosts inside my network. When I use dig to lookup these hosts, they are resolved OK, but when I try to ping those hosts I always receive an unknown host error message. For example: obe:~ simao$ dig dd-wrt ; <<>> DiG 9.6.0-APPLE-P2 <<>> dd-wrt ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 44026 ;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;dd-wrt.
