• MacBook Pro - 72k vs 54k rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 54000 rpm drive to a 72000 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 72000 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 54000 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? • Fix for OpenSolaris with no gcc vs. Nexenta with no ext3

  I'm attempting to migrate my server from linux to a Solaris variant during a hardware upgrade. The machine is based around an Abit AN-M2 board which has an NForce chipset. I have what seems to be a chicken-and-egg problem of sorts: OpenSolaris 2009.06 does not recognize the NIC and I cannot compile the drivers for it as it also lacks gcc. I haven't tested as to whether or not I can mount an ext3 partition yet but its moot if there is no networking. Nexenta 3.0b3 recognizes the NIC but I cannot get the ext3 drives mounted due to FSWfspart refusing to install. I do not know much about Solaris but I wager this is due to the fact that Nexenta is based around Debian as well. While I am reusing the mobo/CPU combo, I did just spent a lot of money on the other hardware around it and would very much like to get it up and running smoothly and quickly. Does anyone have any suggestions that are not: Get a new mobo/CPU Run another OS Use alternate NIC

• Update panel in Tab Container

  I have a tab container with 5 tabs, each tab contains an update panel. When the user initially opens the form, they can only see the first Tab, the others are set to visible=false. Once they have completed the first form, the hit save which sends a partial postback to save the data to the DB. Once that is saved, I then want to set all the other tabs to visible, however this does not work at the moment, I am assuming because the tab container is not contained in an update panel. How can I get this to work, do I need to put the tab container in it's own update panel, which will obviously then contain all the other update panels, or should I not use an update panel in the first tab and do a full page postback?

• windows seven disk check error

  i have gotten the error in the microsoft KB article 975778 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us) i was able to get onto my computer luckily, but when i went on to get the hotfix that is stated in the article, it gave me this error when i ran it: "the update is not applicable to your computer." is there any way of getting the disk check error to stop, or to get this fix to work. i will answer any questions on hardware if you post the questions in the comments. answers to questions this is the a full version that i got from ASUS as an upgrade disk from windows vista (hopefully more specific than you were asking)

• Animated Gif in form using C#

  In my project, whenever a long process in being executed, a small form is displayed with a small animated gif file. I used this.Show() to open the form and this.Close() to close the form. Following is the code that I use. public partial class PlzWaitMessage : Form { public PlzWaitMessage() { InitializeComponent(); } public void ShowSpalshSceen() { this.Show(); Application.DoEvents(); } public void CloseSpalshScreen() { this.Close(); } } When the form opens, the image file do not immediately start animating. And when it does animate, the process is usually complete or very near completion which renders the animation useless. Is there a way I can have the gif animate as soon as I load the form?

• Dell laptop doesn't wake from hibernation after installing Windows 8.1

  My laptop worked flawlessly before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from 8. Now when I close the lid of my laptop and it goes into hibernation, it will not wake again. The LED lights seem to work properly but I don't get any video. I have to hold the power key to turn off then turn it back on again. It wakes from sleep properly. All Windows Updates have been installed. There are 2-3 items in the Device Manager that do not have compatible 8.1 drivers, but I believe those are security related items like fingerprint scanner.

• My ASP.NET Web Application cannot 'find' any of my classes in the App_Code folder .. ??

  Hi folks, I'm trying to make a new asp.net web application .. so I'm copying my files from one site to the new one, in the same solution. Now, any of my classes in the App_Code directory ... they are not getting 'picked up' by the rest of my project. For example... \_ \_App_Code |_ BaseMasterPage.cs (please don't ask why this is in here..) |_ Utility.cs |_ FooBar.cs \_MasterPages |_ Default.master.cs // This file errors ;( namespace Foo.WebSite.MasterPages { public partial class Default_master : App_Code.BaseMasterPage { ... } } namespace Foo.WebSite.App_Code { public class BaseMasterPage : MasterPage { .. } } It cannot find the App_Code.BaseMasterPage (compilation and intellisence error) in the Default.master.cs page. Can someone please help? this is killing me :(

• Video issues with old server running Boxee

  I have a old Dell Power Edge 1650 1U rackmount server running Windows XP. Dual 1.3 ghz Processors and 1 GB of RAM. I would like to run Boxee on it, but the 8mb integrated video card will not support it. The font within Boxee just comes up as blocks of color. I have a PCI Radion R9000 dual out video card. However when I plug it in I can not get video signal on any of the VGA outs. Is it possible to upgrade the video card on this old of a server, or is it possible to make it work with the older integrated video?

  I think the steps are something like: Install DD-WRT on a router with an external hard-drive Install Optware to get Samba Upgrade to Samba 3.6 (the link shows Samba 3.5, but using the NSLU2 optware packages, you can get 3.6 with built-in SMB2.0) ...then a miracle occurs... Then you can use SMB2.0 to connect to your share What is step 4? I can't find it on forums, etc. Am using Microsoft Network monitor to check for SMB2.0 connection, I'm on Windows 7 and have tried network connections on wireless and gigabit wired to the router.   in a partial view I have the following: <%Html.RenderAction(MVC.User.GetComments(Model.UserGroupName)); %> can I render a Controller's PartialViewResult in a View without going through routing so I can pass arguments directly from the model so that the arguments I'm passing to the controller never get sent to the user or seen by the user? Currently the method I'm showing at the top throws an exception because no overload is public. I've got it marked as internal so that a user can not access it, only the rendering engine was my intent.

• out of memory issue in asp .net mvc application

  Hi, I have got one wierd issue. I am working on an asp .net mvc application. I have a refresh button that build some data and view models in the controller code, and returns the partial view back. Well this refresh does work good the very first time. But when i try to click my refresh button again, a javascript alert comes saying "out of memory at line 56" I checked my task manager to see on whats happening. I ahve a 3GB memory and when this error alert shows up the used memory is 1.41 GB. Its normal usage as it looks like. But I dont know why it shows the javascript error alert. This problem happens in my local workstation where I am doing developement of this application. Any thoughts or comments to trouble shoot or solve this issue is appreciated. I ma using IE7.

  I'm currently writing a module for puppet which installs VMWare tools to virtual nodes. I want to do this via yum and and yum-repo. VMWare have their own repo (http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/3.5latest/rhel5/x86_64/index.html) which I thought I could use, rather than creating my own. But then I noticed that their repo files is alot different than the rpm file used when installing VMWare Tools on the node, via the "Install/upgrade VMWare Tools" in vSphere. Does anyone know what the real difference is? Does anyone have any preferences?

• How to create custom get and set methods for Linq2SQL object

  I have some objects which have been created automatically by linq2SQL. I would like to write some code which should be run whenever the properties on these objects are read or changed. Can I use typical get { //code } and set {//code } in my partial class file to add this functionality? Currently I get an error about this member already being defined. This all makes sense. Is it correct that I will have to create a method to function as the entry point for this functionality, as I cannot redefine the get and set methods for this property. I was hoping to just update the get and set, as this would mean I wouldn't have to change all the reference points in my app. But I think I may just have to update it everywhere.

• Which hardware changes require operating system reinstallation?

  I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. So what is it that you can't change? The CPU? Motherboard? Thanks for any replies

• SATA 3 PCIe Controller working with decreased performance (slower than SATA 2)

  After reading this question about maxing out an SSD I decided to do so myself. My mobo only supports SATA 2 and has two PCIe 2.0 x1 connectors (which promiss up to 500 mb/s). So after some searching I decided to go with this controller from amazon. My Samsung magician benchmark before upgrade (running SATA 2): Now after installing the controller all of the benchmark scores are lower (even though the Samsung Magician app confirms its connected to a SATA 3 port): What can I do to remedy this? • How to structure controller to sort multiple criteria asp.net mvc

  Hi, What's the best way to set up a controller to sort by many (possibly null) criteria? Say for example, I was building a site that sold cars. My CarController has a function Index() which returns an IList of cars to the view, and details on each car are rendered with a partial view. What's the best way to structure this? Especially if there are a lot of criteria: Car Type (aka SUV), Car Brand, Car Model, Car Year, Car Price, Car Color, bool IsNew, or if I want to sort by closest to me etc... I'm using NHibernate as my ORM. Should I have just a ton of possible NHibernate queries and figure out which one to choose based on if/then's in the controller? Or is there a simpler way. I do have an official license key bought when installing Windows 8, my question is, now that I need to format Install Win 7 Pro Upgrade to Win 8 Pro how do I make sure my next activation is successfully? In other words, how can I, not change, but remove my license so I can re-use it again when everything is fresh and updated

• If I re-key a SSL certificate for a 2nd/backup server, does the original still work?

  We have a production server with a wildcard SSL certificate. I'm in the process of creating a backup/failover server that will host the same domains, and therefore will also need the SSL certificate. The certificate on the primary server was installed with the private key non-exportable, so I am unable to export the certificate for installation on the failover server. My question then is - if I re-key the certificate from Go Daddy, does the original certificate installed on the primary server cease to be valid? As an aside, the original (primary) server is IIS 6, the failover is IIS 7 (once the failover is operational, we'll likely upgrade the primary).

• Unit testing "hybrid" WPF/Silverlight controls

  I'm starting a new WPF/Silverlight custom control project and wanted to do unit testing on this one. However I'm a little confused about how to approach this. This control would be based on the same codebase for both WPF and Silverlight with minor forking using #ifs and partial classes to tame the differences. I guess I could write unit tests for WPF part with NUnit, MSTest, xUnit, etc. and for the Silverlight part with Silverlight Unit Test Framework but this doesn't sound very elegant to me. I'd have to either ignore testing identical code on one of the platforms and test only differing parts (which is not very trustworthy) or rewrite tests for 2 frameworks (which is annoying). Is this the right way to go? I'm wondering if there's some guidance, articles, tutorials out there on how to approach this task. Any pointers?
