  • What are the licensing issues involved in the Oracle/Apache java dispute?

    - by Chris Knight
I've just started following with interest the soap opera involving Oracle's acquisition of Java and the detriment of goodwill it seems to have generated in the open source community. Specifically, I'm now trying to get my head around the implications of Oracle's decision to refuse Apache an open source license for Harmony. My questions: 1) What is Harmony anyway? Their website states "Apache Harmony software is a modular Java runtime with class libraries and associated tools". How is this different than J2SE or J2EE? Or is Harmony akin to Andriod? 2) The crux of this issue is around the Java Technology Compatibility Kit (or TCK) which certifies that your implementation adheres to the JSR specifications. If I understand correctly, Oracle refuse to offer free or open source license access to the TCK, denying projects like Harmony from being released as open source. Why is this such a big deal for Apache? E.g. why can't (or don't) they release Harmony under a restricted license? 3) From this site is the following quote: It looks like Oracle’s plan is to restrict deployments of Java implementations in certain markets, particularly on mobile platforms, so that it can monetize its own Java offering in those markets without any competition. Presumably anything Oracle produced would be subject to the same restrictions it is imposing on others with respect to end-technology licensing, so how could they get a leg up on the competition? While no doubt distateful, wouldn't other competitors such as Google or Apache be able to release competing platforms under the same license as Oracle?

  • For an inexperienced VPS administrator, is Nginx a suitable alternative to Apache?

    - by James
I couldn't think of the best way to set the title, so if somebody wants to edit it to something more appropriate, I'd be grateful ;) I'm what I would consider to be an inexperienced user/ administrator when it comes to running my VPS. I can get by with a few CLI commands, I can set up Webmin and I can set up Yum repos, but beyond the very basic stuff, I'm out of my depth. So far, I'm running Apache. I don't know it particularly well, but I can get by with editing httpd.conf if I'm told what to edit. I've heard good things about Nginx and that it's not as resource-hungry as Apache. I'd like to give it a go, but I can't find any information about its suitability for administrators like me, with little experience of sysadmin or web server config. Webmin now has support for Nginx, so getting it installed and running probably won't be too much of a problem. What I'm wondering is, from a site adminstrator perspective, is running Nginx as transparent as running Apache? IE, at the moment, I can just throw up Wordpress and Drupal sites without having much to worry about or having to make any config changes to Apache. Would Nginx be as transparent?

  • Apache reverse-proxy intermittent error 113 - No route to host

    - by BonkaBonka
I've got an Apache 2.0.52 server on CentOS 4 that front-ends a couple of App servers (mix of Jetty and Tomcat). Apache has a handful of virtual hosts configured like this: <VirtualHost www1.example.com:443> ServerName www1.example.com DocumentRoot "/mnt/app_web/html" SSLEngine on SSLCipherSuite ALL:!ADH:!EXPORT56:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:+MEDIUM:+LOW:+SSLv2:+EXP SSLCertificateFile /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/server.crt SSLCertificateChainFile /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/chain.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.key/server.key SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown downgrade-1.0 force-response-1.0 RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/app1/(.*)$ http://app1.example.com:8080/app1/$1 [P,L] RewriteRule ^/app2/(.*)$ http://app2.example.com:8080/app2/$1 [P,L] </VirtualHost> However, I'm getting the following errors in the logs intermittently: [Fri Dec 04 07:19:41 2009] [error] (113)No route to host: proxy: HTTP: attempt to connect to 10.0.0.1:8080 (app1.example.com) failed I initially tried turning off IPv6, and that seemed to largely cure it, but I still have sporadic bursts of these messages. Additionally, we're running memcache on same front-end and during the times when I'm getting those messages in Apache's log, the following command doesn't work: echo stats | nc 127.0.0.1 11211 No messages are printed, but neither are the stats printed. I am completely lost as to how to proceed with troubleshooting this. =(

  • weblogic plug-in apache http server location directive question

    - by user39510
We are using Weblogic Portal and Apache 2.x http server with the weblogic plug-in for apache for load-balancing. We have an application that right now can only be accessed from one of our managed servers. What I would like to do is use the Location directive to direct all requests for that page to the one managed server and I can't get it to work. The context that the portal tries to forward to is something like /MyWebApp?portalusername= (where equals a legitimate user. For example /MyWebApp?portalusername=joesmith. All other applications and the plug-in is load balancing as expected because every now and then you'll get sent to the second managed server for this particular application and its not deployed. I tried various things in the Apache http.conf like the following but can't seem to get it work. Any suggestions? The following is a snippet of the httpd.conf. Its a standard out of the box httpd.conf file with the weblogic plugin configuration. <Location /MyWebApp> SetHandler weblogic-handler WebLogicCluster myserver:7011 </Location> <Location /?> SetHandler weblogic-handler WebLogicCluster myserver:7011, myserver2:7012 </Location>

  • Windows 7 Apache Crashes on ANY request

    - by Dan
I have XAMPP installed. I am running Windows 7. I have WordPress installed so that I may tweak it and test things locally before putting them 'live' on a remote server. I just installed BuddyPress. The installation was rather seamless. I activated the plugin and almost immediately, Apache crashed. I have Apache running as a service so it immediately restarted itself and was running BUT if I even so much as refresh the page (or create any other request), down it goes. • Apache Virtual host not recognized

    - by Bozho
I've been using one server, then I reinstalled everything on another server, and the mod_jk stopped working. Here is the situation: apache 2.0 sitting "in front" mod_jk used to connect to the apache to tomcat tomcat 6.0.26 used to server the actual requests I followed this tutorial. The result is: accessing http://mysite.com opens the index.html in /var/www/ accessing http://mysite.com:8080/ works OK the logs at /var/logs/apache2 show everything is OK: [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53.310 2010] [28349:3075389184] [info] init_jk::mod_jk.c (2830): mod_jk/1.2.26 initialized [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [warn] No JkShmFile defined in httpd.conf. Using default /var/log/apache2/jk-runtime-status [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_jk/1.2.26 configured -- resuming normal operations I compared the server.xml, jk.conf, sites-enabled/mysite from the new server to those from the old one and they are identical. The domain name is the same (I updated the DNS record today, and it has refreshed successfully) So the question is, what can go wrong? Is there another place where problems would be logged, if such occur? Update What I can be almost certain of is that the virtual host is not recognized. It is always forwarded to the default virtual host. So, how to make sure the virtual host is recognized and working?

  • Apache is sending php files to my browser instead of parsing

    - by justen doherty
I have to set up PHP on an existing web host. I have made a virtual host entry, but for some reason Apache is sending the PHP to the browser instead of parsing.. from googling around it looks like it's a problem with the mimetypes, but I'm not an Apache expert by any means, so if anyone could help it would be appreciated... • can't figure out why apache LDAP auth fails

    - by SethG
Suddenly, yesterday, one of my apache servers became unable to connect to my LDAP (AD) server. I have two sites running on that server, both of which use LDAP to auth against my AD server when a user logs in to either site. It had been working fine two days ago. For reasons unknown, as of yesterday, it stopped working. The error log only says this: auth_ldap authenticate: user foo authentication failed; URI /FrontPage [LDAP: ldap_simple_bind_s() failed][Can't contact LDAP server], referer: http://mysite.com/ I thought perhaps my self-signed SSL cert had expired, so I created a new one for mysite.com, but not for the server hostname itself, and the problem persisted. I enabled debug-level logging. It shows the full SSL transaction with the LDAP server, and it appears to complete without errors until the very end when I get the "Can't contact LDAP server" message. I can run ldapsearch from the commandline on this server, and I can login to it, which also uses LDAP, so I know that the server can connect to and query the LDAP/AD server. It is only apache that cannot connect. Googling for an answer has turned up nothing, so I'm asking here. Can anybody provide insight to this problem? Here's the LDAP section from the apache config: <Directory "/web/wiki/"> Order allow, deny Allow from all AuthType Basic AuthName "Login" AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthzLDAPAuthoritative off #AuthBasicAuthoritative off AuthLDAPUrl ldaps://domain.server.ip/dc=full,dc=context,dc=server,dc=name?sAMAccountName?sub AuthLDAPBindDN cn=ldapbinduser,cn=Users,dc=full,dc=context,dc=server,dc=name AuthLDAPBindPassword password require valid-user </Directory>

  • Apache process consuming all memory on the server

    - by jemmille
I have an apache process that suddenly appears on a particular server. When it shows up it starts consuming memory at a very rapid rate, then moves on to all the swap. In all it consumes about 11GB (including swap) of memory and the server eventually becomes unresponsive. The load on the server is under 1 at all other times. The process runs as nobody and I am having a hard time tracking down the source. If i run an strace on the process and all it did was continuously dump out mprotect over and over again If i run lsof -p <pid>, I get this, but only sometimes: httpd 19229 nobody 152u IPv4 175050 crawl-66-249-67-216.googlebot.com:62336 (CLOSE_WAIT) httpd 19229 nobody 153u IPv4 179104 crawl-66-249-71-167.googlebot.com:58012 (ESTABLISHED) As long as I catch it, I can kill the process and the server almost immediately stabilizes. I have on site on the server that is getting a few thousand hits a a day that I think might be the source, but I still can't find the exact reason. Also, this is a cPanel server and I have upcp'd the server, rebuilt apache with easy apache, and rebuilt httpd.conf. It is not spawing any related processes, meaning I can find any php, mysql, cgi, etc. processes that relate to this process. It's just a loner process that balloons fast and consumes ever last MB of memory. This is on a XenServer 5.6 based VM. No other servers in the cluster are having this issue.

  • Reverse proxy apache to weblogic problem

    - by Zlatoroh
Hello I have apache 2.2 server and welogic 11g running on web server. Apache is set for revers proxy on port 8080, weblogic serves two web pages and it's on port :7001 first page: localhost:7001/e-SPP/app second page: localhost:7001/e-sprejem/app I would like to access this two pages with apache like so: localhost:8080/e-SPP/app localhost:8080/e-sprejem/app Listen 8080 ServerName localhost:8080 <Proxy *> Order deny, allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On RewriteEngine On <Location /e-SPP/app> ProxyPass localhost:7001/e-SPP/app ProxyPassReverse localhost:7001/e-SPP/app </Location> <Location /e-sprejem/app> ProxyPass localhost:7001/e-sprejem/app ProxyPassReverse localhost:7001/e-sprejem/app </Location> This configuration opens my pages bust it's black anw white because CSS and JS aren't loaded! • Object Not found - Apache Rewrite issue

    - by Chris J. Lee
I'm pretty new to setting up apache locally with xampp. I'm trying to develop locally with xampp (Ubuntu 11.04) linux 1.7.4 for a Drupal Site. I've actually git pulled an exact copy of this drupal site from another testing server hosted at MediaTemple. Issue I'll visit my local development environment virtualhost (http://bbk.loc) and the front page renders correctly with no errors from drupal or apache. The issue is the subsequent pages don't return an "Object not found" Error from apache. What is more bizarre is when I add various query strings and the pages are found (like http://bbk.loc?p=user). VHost file NameVirtualHost bbk.loc:* <Directory "/home/chris/workspace/bbk/html"> Options Indexes Includes execCGI AllowOverride None Order Allow,Deny Allow From All </Directory> <VirtualHost bbk.loc> DocumentRoot /home/chris/workspace/bbk/html ServerName bbk.loc ErrorLog logs/bbk.error </VirtualHost> BBK.error Error Log File: [Mon Jun 27 10:08:58 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: /home/chris/workspace/bbk/html/node, referer: http://bbk.loc/ [Mon Jun 27 10:21:48 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: /home/chris/workspace/bbk/html/sites/all/themes/bbk/logo.png, referer: http://bbk.$ [Mon Jun 27 10:21:51 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: /home/chris/workspace/bbk/html/node, referer: http://bbk.loc/ Actions I've taken: Move Rewrite module loading to load before cache module http://drupal.org/node/43545 Verify modrewrite works with .htaccess file Any ideas why mod_rewrite might not be working?

  • Apache: rewrite port 80 and 443 - multiple SSL vhosts setup

    - by Benjamin Jung
SETUP: multiple SSL domains are configured on a single IP, by using vhosts with different port numbers (on which Apache listens) Apache 2.2.8 on Windows 2003 (no comments on this pls) too many Windows XP users so SNI isn't an option yet There may be reasons why it's wrong to use this approach, but it works for now. vhosts setup: # secure domain 1 <VirtualHost IP:443> SSL stuff specifying certificate etc. ServerName domain1.org </VirtualHost> # secure domain 2 <VirtualHost IP:81> SSL stuff for domain2.org ServerName domain2.org </VirtualHost> GOAL: Some folders inside the domain2.org docroot need to be secure. I used a .htaccess file to rewrite the URL to https on port 81: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^81$ RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}:81%{REQUEST_URI} [R] Suppose I put the .htaccess in the folder 'secfolder'. When accessing http://domain2.org/secfolder this gets succesfully rewritten to https://domain2.org:81/secfolder. ISSUE: When accessing https://domain2.org/secfolder (without port 81), the certificate from the first vhost (domain1.org) is used and the browser complains that the site is insecure because the certificate is not valid for domain2.org. I thought that RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^81$ would also rewrite https://domain2.org to https://domain2.org:81, but it doesn't. It seems that the .htaccess file is not being used at all in this case. At this point I am not sure how to apply a RewriteRule to https://domain2.org. I tried creating an additional vhost for domain2 on port 443 before the one for domain1.org, but Apache seems to choke on that. I hope someone of you has an idea how to approach this. TIA.

  • Difference between Apache Tapestry and Apache Wicket

    - by Stephan Schmidt
Apache Wicket ( http://wicket.apache.org/ ) and Apache Tapestry ( http://wicket.apache.org/ ) are both component oriented web frameworks - contrary to action based frameworks like Stripes - by the Apache Foundation. Both allow you to build your application from components in Java. They both look very similar to me. What are the differences between those two frameworks? Has someone experience in both? Specifically: How is their performance, how much can state handling be customized, can they be used stateless? What is the difference in their component model? What would you choose for which applications? How do they integrate with Guice, Spring, JSR 299? Edit: I have read the documentation for both and I have used both. The questions cannot be answered sufficently from reading the documentation, but from the experience from using these for some time, e.g. how to use Wicket in a stateless mode for high performance sites. Thanks.

  • Apache crashes every 5min

    - by Simon
I'm relatively new to server issues, having a site of mine that I started early in the year grow beyond my capabilities of managing it. I need help. I recently moved out of my shared hosting environment onto a dedicated virtual server from Mediatemple. Each week, I run a script that fetches data from my DB, fetches data from last.fm's API and then tweets information to Twitter. My server uses Virtuozzo and when the script runs, Apache crashes every 5min. I checked and saw that the 'kmemsize' parameter reaches its cap (its 13mb). I realise my problem. The MySQL process stays open for long while Apache needs to handle lots of incoming links (about 200 000 pageviews for that day according to my previous host's AWSTATS). Yes, I'm quite unexperienced in this, and I'm clearly killing the server with too many incoming links while it has to manage the updating of the DB. So that is the precedent: I want a few answers. 1) Why did my shared hosting environment not crash apache every 5min? It ran fine, the site only slowed a lot. Clearly, it must be the virtual container and the kmemsize limit? 2) Where do I go from here? Would a physical server (not a virtual container) encounter the same problems? I sent a support request to Mediatemple as well. I need all the help I can get.

  • Very long (>300s) request processing time on Apache Server serving static content from particular IP

    - by Ron Bieber
We are running an Apache 2.2 server for a very large web site. Over the past few months we have been having some users reporting slow response times, while others (including our resources, both on the internal network and our home networks) do not see any degradation in performance. After a ton of investigation, we finally found a "Deny from none" statement in our configuration that was causing reverse DNS lookups (which were timing out) that solved the bulk of our issues, but we still have some customers that we are seeing in the Apache logs (using %D in the log format) with request processing times of 300s for images, css, javascript and other static content. We've checked all Deny / Allow statements for reoccurrence of "none", as well as all other things we know of that would cause reverse DNS lookups (such as using "REMOTE_HOST" in rewrite rules, using %a instead of %h in our log format configuration) as well as verified that HostnameLookups is set to "Off". As an aside, we've also validated that reverse DNS lookups for folks having this problem do not time out - so I'm fairly certain DNS is not an issue in this case. I've run out of ideas. Are there any Apache configuration scenarios that someone can point me to that I might be missing that would cause request times for static content to take so long only for certain users? Thank you in advance.

  • Linux apache developing configuration

    - by Jeffrey Vandenborne
Recenly reinstalled my system, and came to a point where I need apache and php. I've been searching a long time, but I can't figure out how to configure apache the best way for a developer computer. The plan is simple, I want to install apache 2 + mysql server so I can develop some php website. I don't want to install lamp though, just the apache2, php5 and mysql. The problem that I've been looking an answer for is the permissions on the /var/www/ folder. I've tried making it my folder using the chown command, followed by a chmod -R 755 /var/www. Most things work then, but fwrite for example won't work, because I need to give write permissions to everyone, unless I change my global umask to 000 I'm not sure what I can do. In short: I want to install apache2, php5, mysql-server without using lamp, but configured in a way so I can open up netbeans, start a project with root in /var/www/, and run every single function without permission faults. Does anyone have experiences or workarounds to this? Extra: OS: Ubuntu 10.04 ARCH: x86_64

  • ServerName wildcards in Apache name-based virtual hosts?

    - by Martijn Heemels
On our LAN I've set up several 'fake' TLDs in the DNS server, with the intention of using them for Apache name-based virtual hosting. I'd like to combine this with mass-virtual-hosting (i.e. VirtualDocumentRoot) on an Ubuntu 10.04 LAMP server. However, I can't get it to select the right vhost! Here is a summary of the Apache config: NameVirtualHost 10.10.0.205 <VirtualHost 10.10.0.205> ServerName *.test VirtualDocumentRoot /var/www/%-3.0.%-2/test/%1/ CustomLog /var/log/apache2/access.log vhost_combined </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 10.10.0.205> ServerName *.dev VirtualDocumentRoot /var/www/%-3.0.%-2/dev/%1/ CustomLog /var/log/apache2/access.log vhost_combined </VirtualHost> A hostname such as www.domain.com.dev, correctly resolves to 10.10.0.205, but always selects the top vhost, instead of the bottom one, which matches more closely. I was under the impression that Apache would first try to match the ServerName before defaulting to the top vhost for a given IP. What am I doing wrong? Or is this not possible and must I use another IP for each TLD? apachectl -S outputs (trimmed): 10.10.0.205:* is a NameVirtualHost default server *.test port * namevhost *.test port * namevhost *.dev

  • Creating an Apache Virtual Directory, but updating Active Directory DNS

    - by SnoConeGod
Hello all, I'm just getting started with using the Zend Framework and am following a recommended procedure where I am supposed to create an Apache Virtual Directory for the public-facing portion of a new Zend project. I don't THINK I had any issues creating the Virtual Directory, but my knowledge of the required DNS changes is rather lacking. The dev server I'm using is on a Microsoft Windows Active Directory domain, so I've added A records for both the server name and the subdomain. Still, trying to browse to the site from a Windows 7 PC isn't working properly. What am I missing? What's the proper set of steps for getting an Apache-served subdomain to appear properly in a peer computer's web browser? Details below: server: Debian command-line only, freshly installed today with Zend Server CE LAMP stack server name: ZENDEV subdomain: SQUARE.ZENDEV AD Domain functional level: 2008 mixed (run by a mishmash of 03 and 08 servers) attempting to visit the sites: http://square.zendev and http://square.zendev.domain.local (name of domain redacted, but using the local (not com) suffix) Apache Virtual Directory added to httpd.conf: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/var/www/square/public" ServerName square.localhost </VirtualHost> Is this only a problem with DNS? Or with DNS and my Virtual Directory? Thanks! John

  • Apache can't be restarted after changes to the configuration file

    - by Sharifhs
Hello, I can't successfully configure the apache and php configuration files, can anybody help me in this way? Apache 2.2.16 (win32-x86-no_ssl.msi) was installed into “C:\Apache2.2 “location. Then PHP 5.3.3 (VC9 x86 Thread Safe) zip file was downloaded and extracted on “C:\php” location. From “C:\php” I renamed the “php.ini-development” file into “php.ini” “php.ini” file was opened with notepad, and modified as: doc_root = "C:\Apache2.2\htdocs" extension_dir = "C:\php\ext" The following lines were added to the Apache's configuration file “httpd.conf”: LoadModule php5_module "C:/php/php5apache2_2.dll" AddType application/x-httpd-php .php PHPIniDir "C:/php" N.B.: Thanks all for comments and answer, but I can't reply none your comments, I don't know why. May be I'm not privileged to put any comment as I'm new here (is it the case?)! That's why I'm to edit my post to reply you all. Tell me what can I do? @ jer.salamon: do you want me to post full httpd.conf file? It'll be longer then! @ davr: the server started first, but when I configured those files, its never started again @jer.salamon: did you mean keeping this way: doc_root = extension_dir = "ext" It not yet restared!

  • Apache error "child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25)"

    - by Stephen Melrose
Morning all, Apache on our internal development server stopped working last night. It's running, but all we get is a blank screen, no server errors. Examing the error log shows the following, [Fri Apr 23 09:13:57 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) [Fri Apr 23 09:14:03 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) [Fri Apr 23 09:14:03 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) [Fri Apr 23 09:14:06 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) After some Googling, we found that this is due to Apache trying to handle a file greater than it's maximum allowed limit, which by default is 2GB and is usually an error log. I did a search using find . -size +1000000k -ls (find all files greater than 1GB) in our log and web folders, but nothing showed up. I've also restarted Apache and rebooted the server itself serveral times. I've completely wiped the log folder and started a fresh. Nothing is working. Any ideas as to what else might be causing this? Thank you

  • Making one of the folders default in Apache

    - by OmerO
Hello, The file & directory structure of my website is as follows: /Library/WebServer/mysite/joomla .. /Library/WebServer/mysite/wiki .. /Library/WebServer/mysite/forum .. /Library/WebServer/mysite/index.php As you see, there are various applications each residing in separate folders. Now, in order to define this structure, I have made this entry in Apache http-vhosts.config file: ServerName mysite.com DocumentRoot "/Library/WebServer/mysite" ** And I already have the DirectoryIndex defined: DirectoryIndex index.html index.php, and so on. So far so good but I want this specific functionality: When someone visits mysite, he/she should automatically directed to: /Library/WebServer/mysite/joomla (and therefore /Library/WebServer/mysite/joomla/index.php) I don't want to achieve that functionality by putting a redirection code inside /Library/WebServer/mysite/index.php or /Library/WebServer/mysite/index.htm because that causes time delays (because of the redirection, of course) But in this case, the only proper way of achieving it seems to set DocumentRoot this way: DocumentRoot "/Library/WebServer/mysite/joomla" But when I set it that way, then the other folders (/wiki, /forum, etc.) are simply not served by Apache. To work around it, I put directives like: Alias /wiki /Library/WebServer/mysite/wiki .. Alias /forum /library/WebServer/mysite/forum and it did work actually the way I wanted. But... I still cannot use it that way because in this case I just couldn't manage to make the wiki use Short URLs (as described in link text) So, I have to set the DocumentRoot back to /Library/WebServer/mysite and shoud be able to assign /Library/WebServer/mysite/joomla as the "default directory" (my own terminology :) Can I do it in Apache? Is there any other way you might suggest? Thanks.

  • Using gitlab behind Apache proxy all generated urls are wrong

    - by Hippyjim
I've set up Gitlab on Ubuntu 12.04 using the default package from https://about.gitlab.com/downloads/ {edit to clarify} I've set up Apache to proxy and run the nginx server the package installed on port 8888 (or so I thought). As I had Apache installed already I have to run nginx on localhost:8888. The problem is, all images (such as avatars) are now served from http://localhost:8888, and all the checkout urls Gitlab gives are also localhost - instead of using my domain name. If I change /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb to use that url, then Gitlab stops working and gives a 503. Any ideas how I can tell Gitlab what URL to present to the world, even though it's really running on localhost? /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb looks like: # Change the external_url to the address your users will type in their browser external_url 'http://my.local.domain' redis['port'] = 6379 postgresql['port'] = 2345 unicorn['port'] = 3456 and /opt/gitlab/embedded/conf/nginx.conf looks like: server { listen localhost:8888; server_name my.local.domain; [Update] It looks like nginx is still listening on the wrong port if I don't specify localhost:8888 as the external_url. I found this in /var/log/gitlab/nginx/error.log 2014/08/19 14:29:58 [emerg] 2526#0: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) 2014/08/19 14:29:58 [emerg] 2526#0: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) 2014/08/19 14:29:58 [emerg] 2526#0: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) 2014/08/19 14:29:58 [emerg] 2526#0: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) 2014/08/19 14:29:58 [emerg] 2526#0: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) 2014/08/19 14:29:58 [emerg] 2526#0: still could not bind() Apache setup looks like: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName my.local.domain ServerSignature Off ProxyPreserveHost On AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode <Location /> ProxyPass http://localhost:8888/ ProxyPassReverse http://127.0.0.1:8888 ProxyPassReverse http://my.local.domain </Location> </VirtualHost> Which seems to proxy everything back ok if Gitlab listens on localhost:8888 - I just need Gitlab to start displaying the right URL, instead of localhost:8888.

  • Connect to Apache times out randomly

    - by Amadan
We are trying to set up an Apache server on a remote machine, but we experience strange behaviour. Checking with telnet remote.machine 80, one of these things happen randomly: Connect and serve content normally (no delay) Connect after a long pause Connect normally, then time out without response Timeout on connect Once connected, the request seems to be processed normally. These things do not occur if I connect from that machine directly to localhost 80. The Apache is dedicated, as is the server it runs on (runs only this one application, no-one else is using it for anything else). I am not an administrator of the remote site, and I do not know the network architecture over there, but apparently it's firewalled: (HTTP port is open, SSH port is IP-restricted, most others are closed). If there was any one pattern, I might have some ideas, but this variety of symptoms baffles me. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Apache is 2.2; Server version is: Linux version 2.6.9-22.ELsmp ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.4.4 20050721 (Red Hat 3.4.4-2)) #1 SMP Mon Sep 19 18:32:14 EDT 2005
