  • System requirements for running windows 8 (basic office use) in virtualbox (ubuntu as host os)

    I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware. Are there any official guidelines from oracle or windows on this? Would this lenovo x220, for example, be sufficiently strong? The specs below were taken from this review.   • How to create basic Adobe Illustrator files programatically?

    I need to create a really basic Adobe Illustrator file on the clipboard that I can paste in Adobe Illustrator or Expression Design. I'm looking for code samples on how to programaticaly generate Adobe Illustrator Files, preferably from C# or some other .NET language (but at the moment any language goes). I have found the Adobe Illustrator 3 File Format documentation online but it's allot to digest for this simple scenario. I don't want to depend on the actual Adobe Illustrator program (COM interop for instance) to generate my documents. Must be pure code. The code is for an Expression Studio addin, and I need to be able to create something on the clipboard I can paste into Expression Design. After looking at the formats Expression Design puts on the clipboard when copying a basic shape I've concluded that ADOBE AI3 i the best one to use (the others are either rendered images, or cfXaml that you cannot paste INTO Design). So based on this I can't use SWG which would probably been easier. Another idea might be to use a PDF component as the AI and PDF format is supposed to be compatible? I'm also finding some references to a format called "Adobe Illustrator Clipboard Format" (AICB), but can't find allot of documentation about it.

  • Can not call web service with basic authentication using WCF

    I've been given a web service written in Java that I'm not able to make any changes to. It requires the user authenticate with basic authentication to access any of the methods. The suggested way to interact with this service in .NET is by using Visual Studio 2005 with WSE 3.0 installed. This is an issue, since the project is already using Visual Studio 2008 (targeting .NET 2.0). I could do it in VS2005, however I do not want to tie the project to VS2005 or do it by creating an assembly in VS2005 and including that in the VS2008 solution (which basically ties the project to 2005 anyway for any future changes to the assembly). I think that either of these options would make things complicated for new developers by forcing them to install WSE 3.0 and keep the project from being able to use 2008 and features in .NET 3.5 in the future... ie, I truly believe using WCF is the way to go. I've been looking into using WCF for this, however I'm unsure how to get the WCF service to understand that it needs to send the authentication headers along with each request. I'm getting 401 errors when I attempt to do anything with the web service. This is what my code looks like: WebHttpBinding webBinding = new WebHttpBinding(); ChannelFactory<MyService> factory = new ChannelFactory<MyService>(webBinding, new EndpointAddress( "http://127.0.0.1:80/Service/Service/")); factory.Endpoint.Behaviors.Add(new WebHttpBehavior()); factory.Credentials.UserName.UserName = "username"; factory.Credentials.UserName.Password = "password"; MyService proxy = factory.CreateChannel(); proxy.postSubmission(_postSubmission); This will run and throw the following exception: "The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Anonymous'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Basic realm=realm'." And this has an inner exception of: "The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized." Any thoughts about what might be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • Basic site analytics doesn't tally with Google data

    After being stumped by an earlier quesiton: SO google-analytics-domain-data-without-filtering I've been experimenting with a very basic analytics system of my own. MySQL table: hit_id, subsite_id, timestamp, ip, url The subsite_id let's me drill down to a folder (as explained in the previous question). I can now get the following metrics: Page Views - Grouped by subsite_id and date Unique Page Views - Grouped by subsite_id, date, url, IP (not nesecarily how Google does it!) The usual "most visited page", "likely time to visit" etc etc. I've now compared my data to that in Google Analytics and found that Google has lower values each metric. Ie, my own setup is counting more hits than Google. So I've started discounting IP's from various web crawlers, Google, Yahoo & Dotbot so far. Short Questions: Is it worth me collating a list of all major crawlers to discount, is any list likely to change regularly? Are there any other obvious filters that Google will be applying to GA data? What other data would you collect that might be of use further down the line? What variables does Google use to work out entrance search keywords to a site? The data is only going to used internally for our own "subsite ranking system", but I would like to show my users some basic data (page views, most popular pages etc) for their reference.

  • rapid application developement tools for very basic GUI apps

    I know there are many RAD platforms out there. Infact there are so many that I'm having a hard time finding out which one fits me best. What I want is a RAD tool that would allow me to define a database data model (make DB tables) and then create (view and edit) forms for the various tables. Data input, updating and various queries should be easy and GUI should generate automatically. I'd like to add some additional functionality by coding (such as various complex calculations on the data). I'm a programmer so I'm willing to learn to use a more complete, full-blown RAD solution if you can point me to it (NetBeans and RubyOnRails being the two such frameworks that I'd would probably be high on the list). I'm currently doing Windows Forms logistics apps in .NET. I've actually developed a very crude and basic version of what I need, but I just know that there are solutions out there that are much better and I'd benefit by knowing how to use them. So in short, the basic requirements: * database based data storage (SQLite if possible) * very automated GUI creation * desktop based (as in: not a web app) * extendable by coding * used for creating simple data entry, view & query apps. So basically something like Oracle Forms or DotNetMushroom Rapid Application Developer. But for .NET and SQLite if possible.

  • Confused about Ajax, Basic XMLHTTPRequest

    I'm confused about the basics of Ajax. Right now I'm just trying to build a basic Ajax request using plain JavaScript to better understand how things work (as opposed to using Jquery or another library). First off, do you always need to pass a parameter or can you just retrieve data? In its most basic form, could I have an html document (located on the same server) that just has plain text, and another html document retrieve that text and load it on to the page? So I have fox.html with just text that says "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." and I want to pull in that text into ajax.html on load.     I have an ASP.NET MVC application, with some RESTful services that I'm trying to secure using custom basic authentication (they are authenticated against my own database). I have implemented this by writing an HTTPModule. I have one method attached to the HttpApplication.AuthenticateRequest event, which calls this method in the case of authentication failure: private static void RejectWith401(HttpApplication app) { app.Response.StatusCode = 401; app.Response.StatusDescription = "Access Denied"; app.CompleteRequest(); } This method is attached to the HttpApplication.EndRequest event: public void OnEndRequest(object source, EventArgs eventArgs) { var app = (HttpApplication) source; if (app.Response.StatusCode == 401) { string val = String.Format("Basic Realm=\"{0}\"", "MyCustomBasicAuthentication"); app.Response.AppendHeader("WWW-Authenticate", val); } } This code adds the "WWW-Authenticate" header which tells the browser to throw up the login dialog. This works perfectly when I debug locally using Visual Studio's web server. But it fails when I run it in IIS7. For IIS7 I have the built-in authentication modules all turned off, except anonymous. It still returns an HTTP 401 response, but it appears to be removing the WWW-Authenticate header. Any ideas?

  • Using JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA: Create Basic WebApp without using Generated CRUD Classes, Forms, etc

    I am trying to build a basic CRUD application with NetBeans 7.4, JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA using MySQL. I have successfully done this by using the NetBeans wizards. I want to do this from scratch, no wizards. There seems to be a lack of support for the combo of JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA. When I say "lack", I mean a full example (I might be asking too much), without using the CRUD auto-gen templates/classes AND shows actual queries coded and passed to the datatables(primefaces). YouTube is full of non-English speaking examples using Hibernate (not JPA) and other examples that show flashy GUI's with no code. So far I understand you need an @Entity class (provides the physical build of the tables), a Controller (serializable) and the .xhtml web page to show the datatable.. what else? Also, I'm not seeing any posts or examples where queries are using with JPA/JSF and how they are tied together (in one place). I need to connect the dots here so that I can leverage JSF/JPA to create simple queries to populate my PF DataTables. I've read the blogs and I've googled the intranets until I'm blue in the face. Sending me a list of URL's to read to learn about each product is something I've already done. I get what they do independently, but am looking for the "How do they all connect" answer with maybe some basic code examples!! :)

  • 2 basic but interesting questions about .NET

    Hi, when I first saw C#, I thought this must be some joke. I was starting with programming in C. But in C# you could just drag and drop objects, and just write event code to them. It was so simple. Now, I still like C the most, becouse I am very attracted to the basic low level operations, and C is just next level of assembler, with few basic routines, so I like it very much. Even more becouse I write little apps for microcontrollers. But yeasterday I wrote very simple control program for my microcontroller based LED cube in asm, and I needed some way to simply create animation sequences to the Cube. So, I remembered C#. I have practically NO C# skills, but still I created simple program to make animation sequences in about hour with GUI, just with help of google and help of the embeded function descriptions in C#. So, to get to the point, is there some other reason then top speed, to use any other language than C#? I mean, it is so effective. I know that Java is a bit of similiar, but I expect C# to be more Windows effective since its directly from Microsoft. The second question is, what is the advantage of compiling into CIL, and than run by CLR, than directly compile it into machine code? I know that portability is one, but since C# is mainly for Windows, wouldn´t it be more powerfull to just compile it directly? Thanks.

  • MySQL based authentication with crypt()ed password fails in Apache 2.2

    I'm trying to set up a simple CalDAV/CardDAV server with a Radicale backend and an Apache 2.2 frontend. So far, it's all nice and simple, but I can't get the MySQL based authentication to work. I'd like to authenticate users against an existing MySQL database, and I need the REMOTE_USER variable to be set (pretty much like in the configuration examples for Radicale). I've tried mod_auth_mysql, which authenticated the users nicely, but failed to set the REMOTE_USER variable. The newer alternative seems to be mod_authn_dbd, which doesn't seem to like the crypted passwords in the MySQL database. According to the documentation, crypted passwords should work, so maybe I'm just missing a simple parameter. The configuration looks like this: DBDriver mysql DBDParams "sock=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock dbname=myAuthDB user=myAuthUser pass=myAuthPW <Directory /> AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all AuthName 'CalDav' AuthType Basic AuthBasicProvider dbd require valid-user AuthDBDUserPWQuery "SELECT crypt FROM myAuthTable WHERE id=%s" </Directory> I've tested the query, it works fine. And as mentioned before, mod_auth_mysql worked nicely against the same database, but didn't set the required variables. Am I just missing some configuration parameter? Or is mod_authn_dbd just not the right tool to achieve what I want?

  • Websphere 7 simple realm (like tomcat-users.xml)

    I am trying to port a J2EE app from Tomcat to Websphere and I'm not too familiar with Websphere. The only problem I am having is authorization (I use basic-authentication in my web.xml). In Tomcat I use the tomcat-users.xml file to define my users/passwords and to what roles they belong. How do I do this "simply" in Websphere? When deploying the EAR to Websphere it also asks me to map my role from web.xml to a user or group. Do I have to set up some sort of realm? Custom user registry? Thanks. UPDATE: I configured a Standalone custom registry, however I can't get a log-in prompt for username/password. It works just fine in Tomcat, and it doesn't in Websphere.     Hello, I'm working on a LaTeX document and using lstlisting to display my Java source code. My setup looks like this: \lstset{ basicstyle=\ttfamily, keywordstyle=\bfseries, language=Java, frame=single, aboveskip=11pt, belowskip=11pt, breaklines=true, breakatwhitespace=false, showspaces=false, showstringspaces=false } The keywords are not highlighted bold when using ttfamily, but if I use small or don't specify the basic style, they're highlighted fine. What am I missing?

  • Visual Basic 6 causes Visual Studio 2010 to attempt an installation

    I'm using Visual Basic 6 for a legacy project and it's been working fine. I recently installed the Visual Studio 2010 RC and now when I start VB6 I get an installer with the title "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional RC - ENU". If I click Cancel I can then open my project in VB6. Is there any way of getting rid of this, or am I just the only person on the planet still using VB6?

I am creating a restful api with symfony but would like to require users to be logged in to get certain data.   • Why is the installation of certain programs always such a pain in Linux [closed]

    I am new to Linux and I am trying to set up a server. For this I sometimes to need to install special software, but the installation of this is always such a pain. For example I wanted to try the htscanner to see if it did the job for me. When i got to the page there is NO INSTALLATION guide. I had to search for the right one on google. Even on google its a pain to find the right method. Just try it - google search.After a long search and tried different things I finally found out that I had te install some more software before it will work. The website says that the version I used did not had any dependencies. Thats a lie. Release0.8.1: No dependencies registered. You do need certain things for it to work. After managing to set it up it still didn't work I can't figure out why because there is no official guide on the website. So I wanted to just uninstall it and find a better solution. Uninstalling. Uninstalling something in Linux is a real mystery how this actually works. The best answer I got is to manually look for the files and delete them. Whats up with that! There is never something said about uninstalling on the websites. Even on the website of CentOS itself it tels you how to install something like rpmforge packages (it's a miracle they tell you and not have to google it) but there is no mention of what to do when you want to uninstall. Why not? The forums you get on when trying to solve your problem are most of the time in plain text, and you have to scroll trough huge error logs before you see somethings that vaguely resembles your question if you are lucky. The Question My question is if there are any recommended websites / forums that explain the basic concepts of installing and uninstalling software on Linux. And explain other useful operations. And not Wikipedia or the first hits of Google, I have been there already. I am looking for some easy to read trough guides on these operations on Linux. I have been on a lot of websites that explain some Linux operation, but I bet its easier to get a degree in rocket science than to read trough the website and understand what they try to say.
