  • What to do with old OS install media?

    - by dwj
I'm doing an end-of-the-year clean up and found some old OS install media - Mac OS X 10.3.5, Windows 2000, Windows XP. It seems wrong to just throw them out but they can't have a home with me anymore.  Is there some place I can donate them to?  Anyone know of anyone collecting this stuff for posterity?

  • How do you kill a process tree in linux?

    - by itsadok
Sometimes, sending a SIGTERM to a process will cause it to send SIGTERM to all its child processes. However, sometimes this doesn't work. Is there a command or a utility that will allow me to kill a process and all its child processes at the same time? I usually resort to manually collecting all the pids into one kill command, but it feels stupid. This SO question asks how to do this with perl, but anything that gets the job done would be great.

  • Automatically restarting Perfmon Data Collector Sets

    - by Scott Herbert
I have a number of User Defined Data Collector Sets running on a Windows 2008R2 server, collecting perfmon stats from various servers. Whenever there is a network interruption, or a server rebooted (at worst, when the server which is running all these DCSs is rebooted), I have to manually restart some or all of the Data Collector Sets. Is there a way to configure them to automatically restart, or otherwise be more resilient?

  • Export/Import Windows XP wireless configs

    - by blunders
About to rebuild my XP install and figured I'd see if there was a file or interface for collecting the configs for the built in Windows XP wireless manager. I've looked under the "advance settings" tab and within the properties GUI for each connection and I'm not seeing a way to export the configs. Clearly if I'm exporting these I'd like to be able to import or override the default config with the backup.

  • Status report system?

    - by John
Anyone know of an open-source system for sending out 'what tasks did you to today' type status report reminders in email, then collecting them in an internal website? I checked on freshmeat but didn't see anything. Thanks!

  • Xen domU passwd file overwritten with console log output

    - by malfy
I was setting up a Debian Xen domU and after booting it fine, I added basic configuration to /etc/network/interfaces and ran /etc/init.d/networking restart. This failed so I decided to reboot. After the reboot I also ran xm shutdown box. When dropped to a shell prompt it wouldn't let me login. Upon further inspection, I now have garbage in some critical files in /etc: root@box:/# tail +1 mnt/etc/{passwd-,shadow} tail: cannot open `+1' for reading: No such file or directory ==> mnt/etc/passwd- <== 0000000000100000 (reserved) Nov 23 02:02:39 box kernel: [ 0.000000] Xen: 0000000000100000 - 0000000004000000 (usable) Nov 23 02:02:39 box kernel: [ 0.000000] DMI not present or invalid. • Linux arp cache timeout values

    - by Jak
I'm trying to configure sane values for the Linux kernel arp cache timeout, but I can't find a detailed explanation as to how they work anywhere. Even the kernel.org documentation doesn't give a good explanation, I can only find recommended values to alleviate overflow. Here is an example of the values I have: net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh1 = 128 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh2 = 512 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh3 = 1024 Now, from what I've gathered so far: gc_thresh1 is the number of arp entries allowed before the garbage collector starts removing any entries at all. gc_thresh2 is the soft-limit, which is the number of entries allowed before the garbage collector actively removes arp entries. gc_thresh3 is the hard limit, where entries above this number are aggressively removed. Now, if I understand correctly, if the number of arp entries goes beyond gc_thresh1 but remains below gc_thresh2, the excess will be removed periodically with an interval set by gc_interval. My question is, if the number of entries goes beyond gc_thresh2 but below gc_thresh3, or if the number goes beyond gc_thresh3, how are the entries removed? In other words, what does "actively" and "aggressively" removed mean exactly? I assume it means they are removed more frequently than what is defined in gc_interval, but I can't find by how much.

  • To what extent is size a factor in SSD performance?

    - by artif
To what extent is the size of an SSD a factor in its performance? In my mind, correct me if I'm wrong, a bigger SSD should be, everything else being equal, faster than a smaller one. A bigger SSD would have more erase blocks and thus more leeway for the FTL (flash translation layer) to do garbage collection optimization. Also there would be more time before TRIM became necessary. I see on Wikipedia that it remarks that "The performance of the SSD can scale with the number of parallel NAND flash chips used in the device" so it seems throughput also increases significantly. Also many SSDs contain internal caches of some sort and presumably those caches are larger for correspondingly large SSDs. But supposing this effect exists, I would like a quantitative analysis. Does throughput increase linearly? How much is garbage collection impacted, if at all? Does latency stay the same? And so on. Would the performance of a 8 GB SSD be significantly different from, for example, an 80 GB SSD assuming both used high quality chips, controllers, etc? Are there any resources (webpages, research papers, presentations, books, etc) that discuss correlations between SSD performance (4 KB random write speed, latency, maximum sequential throughput, etc) and size? I realize this does not really sound like a programming question but it is relevant for what I'm working on (using flash for caching hard drive data) which does involve programming. If there is a better place to ask this question, eg a more hardware oriented site, what would that be? Something like the equivalent of stack overflow (or perhaps a forum) for in-depth questions on hardware interfaces, internals, etc would be appreciated.

  • XNA Notes 004

    - by George Clingerman
The XNA community has been crazy busy again. It always make me fee like such a slacker collecting all of these notes as I see the tremendous output from people all over the world and it’s incredible and humbling. There are some amazingly skilled people working with XNA. On another not, I’m going to take a minute to get on my soapbox and say, if you are developing ANYTHING and are not using some sort of source/revision control, START IMMEDIATELY. This applies to teams of one. Projects for fun. And “I back up my hard drive” or “I use dropbox!” does NOT count as using source control. You’ll be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you find one, learn to use it and integrate it into your everyday workflow. I personally use Subversion. It’s hosted offsite at xp.dev.com and I use TortoiseSVN as my front end to interface with the repository. It’s simple and easy to use and has saved me from myself so many time. Honestly, get setup with some type of source control immediately. If you don’t understand how, grab another developer that does and have them walk you through setup and the basics of using it. Ok, I’m done. • How Lead-Acid Batteries Work [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Every morning when you go out and start your car, you’re pulling power from a lead-acid battery. But how exactly do they work? In this informative video we see how lead plates and sulfuric acid provide the power your car craves. Courtesy of Engineer Guy Video: Bill explains the essential principles of a lead-acid battery. He shows the inside of motorcycle lead-acid battery, removes the lead and lead-oxide plates and shows how they generate a 2 volt potential difference when placed in sulfuric acid. He explains how the build up of lead sulfate between the plates will make the battery unusable if it discharged completely, which leads him to a description of how to make a deep cycle battery used for collecting solar energy. - by blunders
I've watched 50 plus presentations on programming topics, although most have been online; example, Google Tech Talks -- and have ad-hoc experience on what formats work for programmers, or practices to take into account when presenting to a group of programmers. That said, I'm open to any suggestions, but here's some topic of the top of my head: Programming Jokes, Images, etc. Posting Code for download Contact Info Collecting feedback Presenting Code on Screen If it matters, in this case -- I'm giving a presentation on using a scripting language to extract, transform and load data to a local user group who's focus is the scripting language; Ruby in this case. Questions, feedback, requests -- just comment, thanks!!

  • Is it true that the Google Spider gives the most relevance of a search result to the first 68 characters of the <title>?

    - by leeand00
I am reading documentation about my CMS and it states that an HTML page <title> tag is really important in SEO. It states that the Google Spider gives the most relevance to the first 68 characters of a site title. (68 characters being the number of characters that Google will display in it's search engine result pages,) Can anyone verify this is still true? I read in The Information Diet that content farms were getting too good at gaming Google's algorithm for collecting and posting SERPs and so google had to change the search algorithm.

  • My Latest Hare-Brained Scheme

    - by Liam McLennan
I have not had a significant side project for a while but I have been working on a product idea. Its an analytics application that analyses twitter data and reports on market sentiment. The target market is companies who want to track trends in consumer sentiment. My idea is to teach the application to divide relevant tweets into ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ categories. If the input was the set of tweets featuring the word ‘telstra’ the application would find the following tweet:   and put it in the ‘negative’ category. Collecting data in this fashion facilitates the creation of graphs such as: which can then be correlated against events, such as a share offer or new product release. I may go ahead and build this, just because I am a programmer and it amuses me to do so. My concerns are: There  is no market for this tool There is a market, but I don’t understand it and have no way to reach it.

  • What defines good developer culture? [closed]

    - by Sven
We are a team of 6 people developing applications for mobile devices (Android & iOS). In our company, which consists of many teams responsible for "classic" software development, business intelligence, virtualization, hardware, etc., we are kind of a small startup because we were the first to use agile methods like Scrum and we are open to new technologies and methods. Also our team is pretty young with me being the oldest with 30 years. We would like to further raise productivity and motivation and thus are currently collecting points which make up a good developer/hacker culture and which may be improved in our team/company. This can be points that we can either improve ourselves or have to pass on to management. I would like to know what in your opinion defines good, modern developer culture? What does developer culture consists of? For example is it clearly defined career opportunities geeky office benefits like trips to extraordinary conferences like WWDC or Google I/O ...

  • Is it possible to create and distribute an app for the BlackBerry Playbook that doesn't go into App World?

    - by Drackir
My company is looking to create an app that we'll use internally on several (about 20) BlackBerry Playbooks. We don't want it to be put up on App World because it's just an internal application. I'm wondering if there are any: Costs involved with this outside of paying a programmer to develop it - i.e. Are there any license fees, deployment fees, etc. License issues involved with deploying the app to multiple Playbooks without deploying it to App World Limitations on functionality of the app Other things we should be taking into consideration If it matters, the app will be collecting information and downloading it to a computer via USB.

Windows Azure Diagnostics Managed Library: The new Diagnostics API enables logging using standard .NET APIs. The Diagnostics API provides built-in support for collecting standard logs and diagnostic information, including the Windows Azure logs, IIS 7.0 logs, Failed Request logs, crash dumps, Windows Event logs, performance counters, and custom logs. Variable-size Virtual Machines (VMs): Developers may now specify the size of the virtual machine to which they wish to deploy a role instance, based on the role's resource requirements. The size of the VM determines the number of CPU cores, the memory capacity, and the local file system size allocated to a running instance. e.g.: <WebRole name=”WebRole1” vmsize=”ExtraLarge”> Supported values for the ‘vmsize’ are: 1. Small 2. Medium 3. Large 4.       ExtraLarge More information for Diagnostics Managed Library can be found at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee758705.aspx   Girish, A

  • What sort of leaderboard for my game?

    - by Martin
I recently published a word game for Windows Phone and I am really happy to have some players. The game is entirely offline and at the end of a game, the player's score is published to a server. I'm collecting the scores to build a leaderboard. Right now, I don't believe that the leaderboard I offer to my users is appropriate. I essentially accumulate the score of all the games of a user for a given day and that becomes their score. So if Player 1 plays 3 games and gets 100, 150 and 200 points, its score for the day is 450 points. I would like to get your ideas and opinion. How do I keep my game challenging and engaging with a good leaderboard? Should I continue accumulating the score for a day? Should I just keep the best score? Thanks!

For example, POST requests will be sent to server, when: user stops a playing video user has watched a video till it's end etc. Using form_remote_for in Rails, i'm just rendering the form and keep it invisible. The reason on doing that - is to utilize authencity tokens, and just have less to code. Via JavaScript i'm only filling some hidden fields up and initiating form submission.
