  • I'm trying to return text from a .txt file using ajax

    - by saad
    I'm trying to get my first ajax script to work. The five images are all side by side. Whenever the user hovers the mouse over any of them, it sends a request to a .txt file on the server and the caption is displayed in the div#image_caption. The problem is, even when I mouse over the image, the caption does not display. I'm not quite sure what could be causing this. Here is the code <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> div#images{overflow: auto;} img{float: left; width: 200px; height: 200px; margin-right: 15px;} div#image_caption {width: 1040px; height: 300px; margin-top: 30px; border: 2px black solid;} </style> <script type="text/javascript" src ="jquery-2.0.3.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { function show_caption(url) { //shows the caption once the mouse hovers over the image var asyncreq; if(window.XMLHttpRequest) { //IE 7+ and other browsers asyncreq = new XMLHttpRequest(); //define the request } else { //for IE 7- asyncreq = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } asyncreq.open("GET", url, true); //give it properties asyncreq.send(); //send the request to the server asyncreq.onreadystatechange = function() { if(asyncreq.readyState == 4 && asyncreq.status == 200) { $("div#image_caption").html(asyncreq.responseText); //add the caption (response text from the file) to the box } } } //end of show_caption(url) function hide_caption() { //hides the caption once the mouse is gone $("div#image_caption").html(""); } }); </script> </head> <body> <h1>Hover over an image for more information.</h1> <div id = "images"> <img src="images/backg.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("backg_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/Desert.jpg"mouseover = 'show_caption("Desert_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/Penguins.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("Penguins_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/Tulips.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("Tulips_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/odji1.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("Desert_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> </div> <div id = "image_caption"> </div> </body> </html>

  • PHP Ajax not working

    I have 3 buttons on my page and depending on which one the user is clickingi want to run through ajax call a delete query in my database. When the user clicks on a button the javascript function seems to work but it doesn't run the query in php script. The html page: <?php session_start(); ?> <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-7"> <script> function myFunction(name) { var r=confirm("Are you sure? • why the global variable value is not being set?

    - by masato-san
    I can't figure out why my global variable workRegionCode is not set properly. In function getWorkRegion(), after getting ajax callback, it attempt to set workRegionCode global variable. (inside of function setFirstIndexWorkRegionCode() ). The alert in setFirstIndexWorkRegionCode() outputs expected value like 401 or 123 etc. But then when getMachines() is called, the global variable workRegionCode is undefiend :( This js starts from window.onload() (please ignore those Japanese JSON key value and few Japanese variables. They are harmless) Code: var workRegionDropdown = document.getElementById("workRegionDropdown");; var machineDropdown = document.getElementById("machineDropdown"); //this is the global variable with problem..... var workRegionCode; //INIT window.onload = function() { getWorkRegions(); // alert("before: " + window.workRegionCode); getMachines(); // alert("after: " + window.workRegionCode); } function addWorkRegionToDropdown(jsonObject, dropdown) { for(var i=0, j=jsonObject.length; i<j; i++) { var option = document.createElement("option"); option.text = jsonObject[i].?????? + ":" + jsonObject[i].??????; option.value = jsonObject[i].??????; dropdown.options.add(option); } } function addMachineToDropdown(jsonObject, dropdown) { for(var i=0, j=jsonObject.length; i<j; i++) { var option = document.createElement("option"); option.text = jsonObject[i].???; option.value = jsonObject[i].???; dropdown.options.add(option); } } function getMachines() { //!!!!!!!!!!! workRegionCode is undefined.. why?!?!?! alert("inside of getMachines() ==> " + window.workRegionCode); var ajaxRequest = new XMLHttpRequest(); ajaxTimeout = setTimeout(function() {timeoutAjax(ajaxRequest, "showMessage")}, "5000"); ajaxRequest.onreadystatechange = function() { if(ajaxRequest.readyState == 4 ) { clearTimeout(ajaxTimeout); switch ( ajaxRequest.status ) { case 200: var jsonOut = JSON.parse(ajaxRequest.responseText); addMachineToDropdown(jsonOut.??, machineDropdown); break; default: document.getElementById("showMessage").innerHTML = ajaxRequest.responseText; } } } var aMonthAgo = new Date(); with(aMonthAgo) { setMonth(getMonth() - 1) } aMonthAgo = aMonthAgo.getYYYYMMDD(); var ??? = "29991231"; var url = "../resources/machine/list/" + window.workRegionCode + "/" + aMonthAgo + "/" + ???; ajaxRequest.open("GET", url, true); ajaxRequest.send(null) } function getWorkRegions() { var ajaxRequest = new XMLHttpRequest(); ajaxTimeout = setTimeout(function() {timeoutAjax(ajaxRequest, "showMessage")}, "5000"); ajaxRequest.onreadystatechange = function() { if(ajaxRequest.readyState == 4 ) { clearTimeout(ajaxTimeout); switch ( ajaxRequest.status ) { case 200: var jsonOut = JSON.parse(ajaxRequest.responseText); //set global variable workRegionCode setFirstIndexWorkRegionCode(jsonOut); addWorkRegionToDropdown(jsonOut.???, workRegionDropdown); default: document.getElementById("showMessage").innerHTML = ajaxRequest.responseText; } } } var url = "../resources/workshop/list"; ajaxRequest.open("GET", url, true); ajaxRequest.send(null) }//end getWorkRegions() function setFirstIndexWorkRegionCode(jsonString) { //here I set the value to work region code! window.workRegionCode = jsonString.???[0].??????; alert("??????: " + window.workRegionCode); }

  • How to stop Excel 2003 from loading a Gazillion files

    - by Gary M. Mugford
    One of my soon-to-be-ex-friends got an Excel file from another friend of his and decided to click on it. It started opening all kinds of files from within Excel. Over 200 and still counting when he called me. I told him to go to task manager, which showed a LOT of files in the applications tab, but only one Excel.exe in the processes tab. Closing it down there, closed down Excel. I then CrossLooped in to see if I could give him a helping hand. Each time Excel was re-opened, the mass influx of files started. They were all kinds of files, PDFs, Docs, JPGs, even some spreadsheets. It looked like the end of solitaire, with multiple windows opening (XP) and the counter on the lone Excel button on the task bar counting off the files. I did the task manager exit routine and went looking for temp files. I CrapCleaned out the system. Made sure I went through the files created in the last hour and deleted anything with a temp anywhere in it. I also deleted the crappy infected/corrupted file from it's place on the desktop (yeah, I know, I yelled for 15 minutes on THAT subject). Despite a delousing, the restart of Excel, which complained of a deactivated add-in, would start the cascading windows, whether I answered yes or no to that question. Yes, it knew it had a serious crash, but why would it just keep on trying to load the bad file, even when I got rid of it? But here's the real question. WHERE was it loading from? I went through the backup folder and NOTHING was there! So what's the process for starting Excel WITHOUT it trying to do a crash recovery? Sort of makes me feel stupid at times. Thanks for any light you can shed on this issue. GM

  • Will Parallel-port dongle work on USB-to-Parallel Adapter?

    - by Gary M. Mugford
    We have a niche program running on a Win2K laptop that uses a security dongle connected to a parallel port for authentication. The laptop is getting creaky and I spent a frustrating night last night shopping various websites for a new laptop that had a parallel port. Seems I'm about three years late [G]. The question I have, is, if I buy a new(ish) laptop and use a USB-to-Parallel Port adapter, will the security dongle work? I know I'm not being specific about the app, but it's one most people wouldn't have heard of anyways. I've been guessing the answer to my question is no, since the app won't know to send a request out to the non-existent port. But, if the process actually is that the dongle sends a message INTO the computer every now and then, then it might work. And, I'm not sure whether the dongle is only needed at program startup time or randomly. The dongle is a 'permanent' addition to the old laptop. This is all about the money. We can have a newly-updated version of the program (which won't add any features we need) for the princely sum of $2700. Or we can spend $500 on a refurbed laptop still running WinXP, add a 30 buck adapter and keep the same solid, stolid performance we've come to appreciate. But it all comes down to the dongle behaviour. Oh, and a dock won't work. The whole laptop issue is about moving about the various nooks and crannies of the building with laptop in hand. Thanks for any suggestions/guidance. GM

  • How can Standard User change file associations in Windows 2000?

    - by Gary M. Mugford
    One of my clients is still running Win2K server with a host of Win2K workstations. And no net admin, due to the downturn of the economy over the years. I'm sort of helping out. Out of my depth, but I am a loyal foot soldier. A problem I encounter rather too often is a user double-clicks on a file in Explorer and then either gets no action, or the wrong program to run. It's a case of a missing or out-of-date file association. The current cure is to temporarily upgrade the user from Standard to Power, do the FA switch and then change back. As Winnie would whine, 'Oh, bother!' At any rate, I thought I'd ask here. Is there a method/program to run without the rigamarole FROM the Standard Users account on the workstation to edit/add a file association? I assume the program route would involve RunAs. I 'believe' most of the workstations run the RunAs service, but I could be wrong. I understand that's required, if there is to be a solution. Any help accepted with thanks. GM NOTE: Seems wassociate from http://www.xs4all.nl/~wstudios/Associate/index.html can resolve the issue.

  • Windows Server task manager displays much higher memory use than sum of all processes' working set s

    - by Sleepless
    I have a 16 GB Windows Server 2008 x64 machine mostly running SQL Server 2008. The free memory as seen in Task Manager is very low (128 MB at the moment), i.e. about 15.7 GB are used. So far, so good. Now when I try to narrow down the process(es) using the most memory I get confused: None of the processes have more than 200MB Working Set Size as displayed in the 'Processes' tab of Task Manager. Well, maybe the Working Set Size isn't the relevant counter? To figure that out I used a PowerShell command [1] to sum up each individual property of the process object in sort of a brute force approach - surely one of them must add up to the 15.7 GB, right? Turns out none of them does, with the closest being VirtualMemorySize (around 12.7 GB) and PeakVirtualMemorySize (around 14.7 GB). WTF? To put it another way: Which of the numerous memory related process information is the "correct" one, i.e. counts towards the server's physical memory as displayed in the Task Manager's 'Performance' tab? Thank you all! [1] $erroractionpreference="silentlycontinue"; get-process | gm | where-object {$.membertype -eq "Property"} | foreach-object {$.name; (get-process | measure-object -sum $_.name ).sum / 1MB}

  • Is there a program to show programs loading during the boot process in real time?

    - by Gary M. Mugford
    Hi all, There are any number of programs that will show me WHAT will run during the boot process for Windows XP. I've always been partial to Mike Lin's version but there are several others, some of which are quite possibly superior. That's not the issue. What I'd really like is a program that would load first and then would list the programs that were about to load and then check them off as the programs loaded. This isn't something I necessarily need for myself. But certain family members get click happy as soon as they see the icon they eventually want to run and end up clicking on it. THIRTY TWO TIMES in one memorable crash-inducing spasm. If there was some way for 'progress' to be shown during the loading of from the various spots Windows auto-loads from, PLUS a BIG BANNER saying "Please do not move the mouse or click on anything until done.", I think I might cut down on my early morning family support calls significantly. I've tried a variety of searches, but I couldn't find the ones that show in real time in the forest of links to programs that will show the list after the fact. Any leads? If not, do any of you who write the after-the-fact listers want to take a shot at producing a utility to do what I think would be a relatively popular utility? Best of the season to all of you and yours. Thanks in advance for any replies, GM

  • What is the difference between disabling hibernation and idling time for a NAS?

    - by Gary M. Mugford
    I have two D-LINK DNS-323 NAS boxes with two Seagate drives in each. The first one is about a year old, the second one about three months. The first two on Monster are each 1.5T drives while the last two on Origami are 2T drives. I have never been overly happy with the Monster drives but, outside of poor throughput on small files, they have been consistently available to all programs after I put a batch file into my startup to do a directly listing of each. I added the two new drives when I added the Origami box. But, watching the dos box that comes up, I rarely see both listed before the box disappears. Other programs, backups, Belarc, even my file browsers, seem to have a dickens of a time seeing O: and P:. Finally, I decided to go into setup and turn off hibernation. Performance HAS been better since and Belarc, for instance, now sees both drives. At the time of poking around, I noticed an Idle Time feature too. What is the difference between the two settings? And for added points, how much trouble am I in for turning off hibernation? The super bonus round ... anything ELSE I should have done? Thanks in advance, GM

  • A "Trig" Calculating Class

    - by Clinton Scott
    I have been trying to create a gui that calculates trigonometric functions based off of the user's input. I have had success in the GUI part, but my class that I wrote to hold information using inheritance seems to be messed up, because when I run it gives an error saying: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Uncompilable source code - constructor ArcTrigCalcCon in class TrigCalc.ArcTrigCalcCon cannot be applied to given types; required: double,double,double,double,double,double found: java.lang.Double,java.lang.Double,java.lang.Double reason: actual and formal argument lists differ in length at TrigCalc.TrigCalcGUI.(TrigCalcGUI.java:31) at TrigCalc.TrigCalcGUI.main(TrigCalcGUI.java:87) Java Result: 1 and says it is the object causing the problem. Below Will be my code. First I will put up my inheritance class with cosecant secant and cotangent and then my original class with the original 3 trig functions: { public ArcTrigCalcCon(double s, double cs, double t, double csc, double sc, double ct) { // Inherit from the Trig Calc class super(s, cs, t); cosecant = 1/s; secant = 1/cs; cotangent = 1/t; } public void setCsc(double csc) { cosecant = csc; } public void setSec(double sc) { secant = sc; } public void setCot(double ct) { cotangent = ct; } } Here is the first Trigonometric class: public class TrigCalcCon { public double sine; public double cosine; public double tangent; public TrigCalcCon(double s, double cs, double t) { sine = s; cosine = cs; tangent = t; } public void setSin(double s) { sine = s; } public void setCos(double cs) { cosine = cs;   Using R to Analyze G1GC Log Files   Using R to Analyze G1GC Log Files Introduction Working in Oracle Platform Integration gives an engineer opportunities to work on a wide array of technologies. My team’s goal is to make Oracle applications run best on the Solaris/SPARC platform. When looking for bottlenecks in a modern applications, one needs to be aware of not only how the CPUs and operating system are executing, but also network, storage, and in some cases, the Java Virtual Machine. I was recently presented with about 1.5 GB of Java Garbage First Garbage Collector log file data. If you’re not familiar with the subject, you might want to review Garbage First Garbage Collector Tuning by Monica Beckwith. The customer had been running Java HotSpot 1.6.0_31 to host a web application server. I was told that the Solaris/SPARC server was running a Java process launched using a commmand line that included the following flags: -d64 -Xms9g -Xmx9g -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 -XX:InitiatingHeapOccupancyPercent=80 -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+PrintGC -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC -XX:+PrintGCDateStamps -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:ParallelGCThreads=8 Several sources on the internet indicate that if I were to print out the 1.5 GB of log files, it would require enough paper to fill the bed of a pick up truck. Of course, it would be fruitless to try to scan the log files by hand. Tools will be required to summarize the contents of the log files. Others have encountered large Java garbage collection log files. There are existing tools to analyze the log files: IBM’s GC toolkit The chewiebug GCViewer gchisto HPjmeter Instead of using one of the other tools listed, I decide to parse the log files with standard Unix tools, and analyze the data with R. Data Cleansing The log files arrived in two different formats. I guess that the difference is that one set of log files was generated using a more verbose option, maybe -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC, and the other set of log files was generated without that option. Format 1 In some of the log files, the log files with the less verbose format, a single trace, i.e. the report of a singe garbage collection event, looks like this: {Heap before GC invocations=12280 (full 61): garbage-first heap total 9437184K, used 7499918K [0xfffffffd00000000, 0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff40000000) region size 4096K, 1 young (4096K), 0 survivors (0K) compacting perm gen total 262144K, used 144077K [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff50000000, 0xffffffff50000000) the space 262144K, 54% used [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff48cb3758, 0xffffffff48cb3800, 0xffffffff50000000) No shared spaces configured. 2014-05-14T07:24:00.988-0700: 60586.353: [GC pause (young) 7324M->7320M(9216M), 0.1567265 secs] Heap after GC invocations=12281 (full 61): garbage-first heap total 9437184K, used 7496533K [0xfffffffd00000000, 0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff40000000) region size 4096K, 0 young (0K), 0 survivors (0K) compacting perm gen total 262144K, used 144077K [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff50000000, 0xffffffff50000000) the space 262144K, 54% used [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff48cb3758, 0xffffffff48cb3800, 0xffffffff50000000) No shared spaces configured. } A simple grep can be used to extract a summary: $ grep "\[ GC pause (young" g1gc.log 2014-05-13T13:24:35.091-0700: 3.109: [GC pause (young) 20M->5029K(9216M), 0.0146328 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:35.440-0700: 3.459: [GC pause (young) 9125K->6077K(9216M), 0.0086723 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:37.581-0700: 5.599: [GC pause (young) 25M->8470K(9216M), 0.0203820 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:42.686-0700: 10.704: [GC pause (young) 44M->15M(9216M), 0.0288848 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:48.941-0700: 16.958: [GC pause (young) 51M->20M(9216M), 0.0491244 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:56.049-0700: 24.066: [GC pause (young) 92M->26M(9216M), 0.0525368 secs] 2014-05-13T13:25:34.368-0700: 62.383: [GC pause (young) 602M->68M(9216M), 0.1721173 secs] But that format wasn't easily read into R, so I needed to be a bit more tricky. I used the following Unix command to create a summary file that was easy for R to read. $ echo "SecondsSinceLaunch BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize RealTime" $ grep "\[GC pause (young" g1gc.log | grep -v mark | sed -e 's/[A-SU-z\(\),]/ /g' -e 's/->/ /' -e 's/: / /g' | more SecondsSinceLaunch BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize RealTime 2014-05-13T13:24:35.091-0700 3.109 20 5029 9216 0.0146328 2014-05-13T13:24:35.440-0700 3.459 9125 6077 9216 0.0086723 2014-05-13T13:24:37.581-0700 5.599 25 8470 9216 0.0203820 2014-05-13T13:24:42.686-0700 10.704 44 15 9216 0.0288848 2014-05-13T13:24:48.941-0700 16.958 51 20 9216 0.0491244 2014-05-13T13:24:56.049-0700 24.066 92 26 9216 0.0525368 2014-05-13T13:25:34.368-0700 62.383 602 68 9216 0.1721173 Format 2 In some of the log files, the log files with the more verbose format, a single trace, i.e. the report of a singe garbage collection event, was more complicated than Format 1. Here is a text file with an example of a single G1GC trace in the second format. As you can see, it is quite complicated. It is nice that there is so much information available, but the level of detail can be overwhelming. I wrote this awk script (download) to summarize each trace on a single line. #!/usr/bin/env awk -f BEGIN { printf("SecondsSinceLaunch IncrementalCount FullCount UserTime SysTime RealTime BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize\n") } ###################### # Save count data from lines that are at the start of each G1GC trace. # Each trace starts out like this: # {Heap before GC invocations=14 (full 0): # garbage-first heap total 9437184K, used 325496K [0xfffffffd00000000, 0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff40000000) ###################### /{Heap.*full/{ gsub ( "\\)" , "" ); nf=split($0,a,"="); split(a[2],b," "); getline; if ( match($0, "first") ) { G1GC=1; IncrementalCount=b[1]; FullCount=substr( b[3], 1, length(b[3])-1 ); } else { G1GC=0; } } ###################### # Pull out time stamps that are in lines with this format: # 2014-05-12T14:02:06.025-0700: 94.312: [GC pause (young), 0.08870154 secs] ###################### /GC pause/ { DateTime=$1; SecondsSinceLaunch=substr($2, 1, length($2)-1); } ###################### # Heap sizes are in lines that look like this: # [ 4842M->4838M(9216M)] ###################### /\[ .*]$/ { gsub ( "\\[" , "" ); gsub ( "\ \]" , "" ); gsub ( "->" , " " ); gsub ( "\\( " , " " ); gsub ( "\ \)" , " " ); split($0,a," "); if ( split(a[1],b,"M") > 1 ) {BeforeSize=b[1]*1024;} if ( split(a[1],b,"K") > 1 ) {BeforeSize=b[1];} if ( split(a[2],b,"M") > 1 ) {AfterSize=b[1]*1024;} if ( split(a[2],b,"K") > 1 ) {AfterSize=b[1];} if ( split(a[3],b,"M") > 1 ) {TotalSize=b[1]*1024;} if ( split(a[3],b,"K") > 1 ) {TotalSize=b[1];} } ###################### # Emit an output line when you find input that looks like this: # [Times: user=1.41 sys=0.08, real=0.24 secs] ###################### /\[Times/ { if (G1GC==1) { gsub ( "," , "" ); split($2,a,"="); UserTime=a[2]; split($3,a,"="); SysTime=a[2]; split($4,a,"="); RealTime=a[2]; print DateTime,SecondsSinceLaunch,IncrementalCount,FullCount,UserTime,SysTime,RealTime,BeforeSize,AfterSize,TotalSize; G1GC=0; } } The resulting summary is about 25X smaller that the original file, but still difficult for a human to digest. All of the numbers from high school statistics are available via simple commands. For example, generate a summary of every column: summary(g1gc.df) ## row.names SecondsSinceLaunch IncrementalCount FullCount ## Length:8307 Min. : 1 Min. : 0 Min. : 0.0 ## Class :character 1st Qu.: 9977 1st Qu.:2048 1st Qu.: 0.0 ## Mode :character Median :12855 Median :4136 Median : 12.0 ## Mean :12527 Mean :4156 Mean : 31.6 ## 3rd Qu.:15758 3rd Qu.:6262 3rd Qu.: 61.0 ## Max. :55484 Max. :8391 Max. :113.0 ## UserTime SysTime RealTime BeforeSize ## Min. :0.040 Min. :0.0000 Min. : 0.0 Min. : 5476 ## 1st Qu.:0.470 1st Qu.:0.0300 1st Qu.: 0.1 1st Qu.:5137920 ## Median :0.620 Median :0.0300 Median : 0.1 Median :6574080 ## Mean :0.751 Mean :0.0355 Mean : 0.3 Mean :5841855 ## 3rd Qu.:0.920 3rd Qu.:0.0400 3rd Qu.: 0.2 3rd Qu.:7084032 ## Max. :3.370 Max. :1.5600 Max. :488.1 Max. :8696832 ## AfterSize TotalSize ## Min. : 1380 Min. :9437184 ## 1st Qu.:5002752 1st Qu.:9437184 ## Median :6559744 Median :9437184 ## Mean :5785454 Mean :9437184 ## 3rd Qu.:7054336 3rd Qu.:9437184 ## Max. :8482816 Max. :9437184 Q: What is the total amount of User CPU time spent in garbage collection? sum(g1gc.df$UserTime) ## [1] 6236 As you can see, less than two hours of CPU time was spent in garbage collection. Is that too much? To find the percentage of time spent in garbage collection, divide the number above by total_elapsed_time*CPU_count. In this case, there are a lot of CPU’s and it turns out the the overall amount of CPU time spent in garbage collection isn’t a problem when viewed in isolation. When calculating rates, i.e. events per unit time, you need to ask yourself if the rate is homogenous across the time period in the log file. Does the log file include spikes of high activity that should be separately analyzed? Averaging in data from nights and weekends with data from business hours may alias problems. If you have a reason to suspect that the garbage collection rates include peaks and valleys that need independent analysis, see the “Time Series” section, below. Q: How much garbage is collected on each pass? The amount of heap space that is recovered per GC pass is surprisingly low: At least one collection didn’t recover any data. (“Min.=0”) 25% of the passes recovered 3MB or less. (“1st Qu.=3072”) Half of the GC passes recovered 4MB or less. (“Median=4096”) The average amount recovered was 56MB. (“Mean=56390”) 75% of the passes recovered 36MB or less. (“3rd Qu.=36860”) At least one pass recovered 2GB. Histogram of User CPU Time per Collection I don't think that this graph requires any explanation. hist(g1gc.df$UserTime, main="User CPU Time per Collection", xlab="Seconds", ylab="Frequency") Box plot to identify outliers When the initial data is viewed with a box plot, you can see the one crazy outlier in the real time per GC. Save this data point for future analysis and drop the outlier so that it’s not throwing off our statistics. Now the box plot shows many outliers, which will be examined later, using times series analysis. Notice that the scale of the x-axis changes drastically once the crazy outlier is removed. par(mfrow=c(2,1)) boxplot(g1gc.df$UserTime,g1gc.df$SysTime,g1gc.df$RealTime, main="Box Plot of Time per GC\n(dominated by a crazy outlier)", names=c("usr","sys","elapsed"), xlab="Seconds per GC", ylab="Time (Seconds)", horizontal = TRUE, outcol="red") crazy.outlier.df=g1gc.df[g1gc.df$RealTime > 400,] g1gc.df=g1gc.df[g1gc.df$RealTime < 400,] boxplot(g1gc.df$UserTime,g1gc.df$SysTime,g1gc.df$RealTime, main="Box Plot of Time per GC\n(crazy outlier excluded)", names=c("usr","sys","elapsed"), xlab="Seconds per GC", ylab="Time (Seconds)", horizontal = TRUE, outcol="red") box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") Here is the crazy outlier for future analysis: crazy.outlier.df ## row.names SecondsSinceLaunch IncrementalCount ## 8233 2014-05-12T23:15:43.903-0700: 20741 8316 ## FullCount UserTime SysTime RealTime BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize ## 8233 112 0.55 0.42 488.1 8381440 8235008 9437184 ## Delta ## 8233 146432 R Time Series Data To analyze the garbage collection as a time series, I’ll use Z’s Ordered Observations (zoo). “zoo is the creator for an S3 class of indexed totally ordered observations which includes irregular time series.” require(zoo) ## Loading required package: zoo ## ## Attaching package: 'zoo' ## ## The following objects are masked from 'package:base': ## ## as.Date, as.Date.numeric head(g1gc.df[,1]) ## [1] "2014-05-12T14:00:32.868-0700:" "2014-05-12T14:00:33.179-0700:" ## [3] "2014-05-12T14:00:33.677-0700:" "2014-05-12T14:00:35.538-0700:" ## [5] "2014-05-12T14:00:37.811-0700:" "2014-05-12T14:00:41.428-0700:" options("digits.secs"=3) times=as.POSIXct( g1gc.df[,1], format="%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%OS%z:") g1gc.z = zoo(g1gc.df[,-c(1)], order.by=times) head(g1gc.z) ## SecondsSinceLaunch IncrementalCount FullCount ## 2014-05-12 17:00:32.868 1.161 0 0 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:33.178 1.472 1 0 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:33.677 1.969 2 0 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:35.538 3.830 3 0 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:37.811 6.103 4 0 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:41.427 9.720 5 0 ## UserTime SysTime RealTime BeforeSize AfterSize ## 2014-05-12 17:00:32.868 0.11 0.04 0.02 8192 1400 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:33.178 0.05 0.01 0.02 5496 1672 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:33.677 0.04 0.01 0.01 5768 2557 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:35.538 0.21 0.05 0.04 22528 4907 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:37.811 0.08 0.01 0.02 24576 7072 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:41.427 0.26 0.06 0.04 43008 14336 ## TotalSize Delta ## 2014-05-12 17:00:32.868 9437184 6792 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:33.178 9437184 3824 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:33.677 9437184 3211 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:35.538 9437184 17621 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:37.811 9437184 17504 ## 2014-05-12 17:00:41.427 9437184 28672 Example of Two Benchmark Runs in One Log File The data in the following graph is from a different log file, not the one of primary interest to this article. I’m including this image because it is an example of idle periods followed by busy periods. It would be uninteresting to average the rate of garbage collection over the entire log file period. More interesting would be the rate of garbage collect in the two busy periods. Are they the same or different? Your production data may be similar, for example, bursts when employees return from lunch and idle times on weekend evenings, etc. Once the data is in an R Time Series, you can analyze isolated time windows. Clipping the Time Series data Flashing back to our test case… Viewing the data as a time series is interesting. You can see that the work intensive time period is between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM. Lets clip the data to the interesting period:     par(mfrow=c(2,1)) plot(g1gc.z$UserTime, type="h", main="User Time per GC\nTime: Complete Log File", xlab="Time of Day", ylab="CPU Seconds per GC", col="#1b9e77") clipped.g1gc.z=window(g1gc.z, start=as.POSIXct("2014-05-12 21:00:00"), end=as.POSIXct("2014-05-13 03:00:00")) plot(clipped.g1gc.z$UserTime, type="h", main="User Time per GC\nTime: Limited to Benchmark Execution", xlab="Time of Day", ylab="CPU Seconds per GC", col="#1b9e77") box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") Cumulative Incremental and Full GC count Here is the cumulative incremental and full GC count. When the line is very steep, it indicates that the GCs are repeating very quickly. Notice that the scale on the Y axis is different for full vs. incremental. plot(clipped.g1gc.z[,c(2:3)], main="Cumulative Incremental and Full GC count", xlab="Time of Day", col="#1b9e77") GC Analysis of Benchmark Execution using Time Series data In the following series of 3 graphs: The “After Size” show the amount of heap space in use after each garbage collection. Many Java objects are still referenced, i.e. alive, during each garbage collection. This may indicate that the application has a memory leak, or may indicate that the application has a very large memory footprint. Typically, an application's memory footprint plateau's in the early stage of execution. One would expect this graph to have a flat top. The steep decline in the heap space may indicate that the application crashed after 2:00. The second graph shows that the outliers in real execution time, discussed above, occur near 2:00. when the Java heap seems to be quite full. The third graph shows that Full GCs are infrequent during the first few hours of execution. The rate of Full GC's, (the slope of the cummulative Full GC line), changes near midnight.   plot(clipped.g1gc.z[,c("AfterSize","RealTime","FullCount")], xlab="Time of Day", col=c("#1b9e77","red","#1b9e77")) GC Analysis of heap recovered Each GC trace includes the amount of heap space in use before and after the individual GC event. During garbage coolection, unreferenced objects are identified, the space holding the unreferenced objects is freed, and thus, the difference in before and after usage indicates how much space has been freed. The following box plot and bar chart both demonstrate the same point - the amount of heap space freed per garbage colloection is surprisingly low. par(mfrow=c(2,1)) boxplot(as.vector(clipped.g1gc.z$Delta), main="Amount of Heap Recovered per GC Pass", xlab="Size in KB", horizontal = TRUE, col="red") hist(as.vector(clipped.g1gc.z$Delta), main="Amount of Heap Recovered per GC Pass", xlab="Size in KB", breaks=100, col="red") box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") This graph is the most interesting. The dark blue area shows how much heap is occupied by referenced Java objects. This represents memory that holds live data. The red fringe at the top shows how much data was recovered after each garbage collection. barplot(clipped.g1gc.z[,c("AfterSize","Delta")], col=c("#7570b3","#e7298a"), xlab="Time of Day", border=NA) legend("topleft", c("Live Objects","Heap Recovered on GC"), fill=c("#7570b3","#e7298a")) box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") When I discuss the data in the log files with the customer, I will ask for an explaination for the large amount of referenced data resident in the Java heap. There are two are posibilities: There is a memory leak and the amount of space required to hold referenced objects will continue to grow, limited only by the maximum heap size. After the maximum heap size is reached, the JVM will throw an “Out of Memory” exception every time that the application tries to allocate a new object. If this is the case, the aplication needs to be debugged to identify why old objects are referenced when they are no longer needed. The application has a legitimate requirement to keep a large amount of data in memory. The customer may want to further increase the maximum heap size. Another possible solution would be to partition the application across multiple cluster nodes, where each node has responsibility for managing a unique subset of the data. Conclusion In conclusion, R is a very powerful tool for the analysis of Java garbage collection log files. The primary difficulty is data cleansing so that information can be read into an R data frame. Once the data has been read into R, a rich set of tools may be used for thorough evaluation.

  • Drupal JSON POST from PhoneGap

    - by abritez
    I am trying to send a POST request to Drupal's Services module & JSON_Server module, however I am getting { "#error": true, "#data": "Invalid method " } Since PhoneGap runs html files from locally on the phone, should i need to worry about JSONP. The issue I have with that is that I must POST data, and JSONP only allows for GET. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks! //SEND REQUEST AND CALLBACK FUNCTION var req; DrupalService.prototype.request = function(dataObject, callback){ req = false; var url = DRUPAL_JSON_URL; var params = "data="+dataObject; try { req = new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch(e) { req = false; } if(req) { req.onreadystatechange = function() {//Call a function when the state changes. if(req.readyState == 4 && req.status == 200) { console.log(" "+req.responseText); } } req.open("POST", url, false); req.send(params); } }

Similar code but i am trying to load and parse an xml file to read contents of the file for the particular date. In a perfect world the user would tap a date and below the datepicker html output would give the user specific times for the selected date instead of my last project of an image. my probelm is nothing is loading, so my question is what am i doing wrong? my code is as follows <!DOCTYPE html> <link type="text/css" href="css/ui-darkness/jquery-ui-1.8.custom.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-ui-1.8.custom.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function(){ // Datepicker $('#datepicker').datepicker({ dateFormat: 'yy-mm-dd', inline: true, minDate: new Date(2010, 1 - 1, 1), maxDate:new Date(2010, 12 - 1, 31), altField: '#datepicker_value', onSelect: function(){ var day1 = $("#datepicker").datepicker('getDate').getDate(); var month1 = $("#datepicker").datepicker('getDate').getMonth() + 1; var year1 = $("#datepicker").datepicker('getDate').getFullYear(); var fullDate = year1 + "" + month1 + "" + day1; //var str_output ="<img src=\"http://69.89.20.27/images/a" + fullDate +".png\" width=\"100%\"/>"; //"<h1>"+fullDate+"</h1>"; //"<img src=\"http://69.*.*.*/images/a" + fullDate +".png\"/>"; //$('#page_output').html(str_output); var doc = loadXMLDoc('date.xml'); // loading the XML file var el = doc.getElementsByTagName('_'+date); // retrieving the elements corrsponding to a date, eg: _20100103 var page_output = document.getElementById('page_output'); if(el.length >= 1) { // matched XML data found for the specified date var dt = el[0].getElementsByTagName('date'); var great_times = el[0].getElementsByTagName('great_times'); var good_times = el[0].getElementsByTagName('good_times'); var str_output = "<h1><center>" + dt[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue + "</center></h1><br/><br>"; str_output += "<b>Excellent Times:</b><br> " + great_times[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue + "<br/><br>"; str_output += "<b>Good Times:</b><br> " + good_times[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue + "<br/><br>"; $('#page_output').html(str_output);// writing the results to the div element (page_out) } else { alert("Sorry","Action not allowed on this page"); page_output.innerHTML = ''; // No XML data found for the selected date reloadmainwDate(); return false; } return true; } }); //hover states on the static widgets $('#dialog_link, ul#icons li').hover( function() { $(this).addClass('ui-state-hover'); }, function() { $(this).removeClass('ui-state-hover'); } ); }); //var img_date = .datepicker('getDate'); //var day1 = $("#datepicker").datepicker('getDate').getDate(); //var month1 = $("#datepicker").datepicker('getDate').getMonth() + 1; //var year1 = $("#datepicker").datepicker('getDate').getFullYear(); //var fullDate = year1 + "-" + month1 + "-" + day1; //var date = $('#datepicker').datepicker({ dateFormat: 'dd-mm-yy' }); //var str_output = "<h1><center><p>"+ date + "</p></center></h1>"; //$('#page_output')[0].innerHTML = str_output; // writing the results to the div element (page_out) </script> <script> function loadXMLDoc(dname) { var xmlDoc; // IE 5 and IE 6 if(typeof ActiveXObject != 'undefined') { xmlDoc=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM"); xmlDoc.async=false; xmlDoc.load(dname); return xmlDoc; } else if (window.XMLHttpRequest) // firefox { xmlDoc=new window.XMLHttpRequest(); xmlDoc.open("GET",dname,false); xmlDoc.send(""); return xmlDoc.responseXML; } alert("Error loading document"); return null; } <!-- Datepicker --> <div id="datepicker"></div> <!-- Highlight / Error --> <div id="page_output"></div> </body>

  • jquery ui autocomplete not working in ie8 (until page refresh)

    - by Andy Simpson
    Hello all, I am using jquery ui autocomplete it is working absolutely fine in all browsers except ie8. I have been doing some testing and there seems to be a strange bug. When I click on a link leading to the relevant page there is the following error generated by ie8 when I start typing in the autocomplete box: 'object doesn't support this property or method' this error points to my development jquery(1.4.2) file at line 4955, char 5 which is the following line: return new window.XMLHttpRequest(); However, if I simply reload the page the autocomplete works. I have added a random bit of data to be called with the autocomplete as I read that ie8 caches it ajax get requests but this does not seem to have solved the problem. Could there be a problem with the timing of the loading of all the relevant files including jquery? If so, how would I fix this? Any other clever ideas?! Andy

  • Weird "406 not acceptable" error

    - by Horace Loeb
    When I try to hit this action via Javascript, I get a 406 Not Acceptable error: def show @annotation = Annotation.find_by_id(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| format.html { if @annotation.blank? redirect_to root_path else redirect_to inline_annotation_path(@annotation) end } format.js { if params[:format] == "raw" render :text => @annotation.body.to_s else render :text => @annotation.body.to_html end } end end This is from jQuery, but I'm doing the right beforeSend stuff: $.ajaxSetup({ beforeSend: function(xhr) { xhr.setRequestHeader("Accept", "text/javascript"); }, cache: false }); Here are my request headers: Host localhost:3000 User-Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3 Accept text/javascript Accept-Language en-us,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding gzip,deflate Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive 300 Connection keep-alive X-Requested-With XMLHttpRequest Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded

  • "not well-formed" warning when loading client-side JSON in Firefox via jQuery.ajax

    - by Zhami
    I am using jQuery's ajax method to acquire a static JSON file. The data is loaded from the local file system, hence there is no server, so I can't change the mime type. This works fin in Safari, but Firefox (3.6.3) reports the file to be "not well-formed". I am aware of, and have reviewed, a similar post here on Stack Overflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/677902/not-well-formed-error-in-firefox-when-loading-json-file-with-xmlhttprequest I believe my JSON is well-formed: { "_": ["appl", "goog", "yhoo", "vz", "t"] } My ajax call is straightforward: $.ajax({ url: 'data/tickers.json', dataType: 'json', async: true, data: null, success: function(data, textStatus, request) { callback(data); } }); If I wrap the JSON with a document tag: <document>JSON data</document> as was mentioned in the above referenced posted question, the ajax call fails with a parserror. So: is there a way to avoid the Firefox warning when reading in client-side JSON files?

  • IE 11 not listening to MSFullscreenChange

    - by Chris
    IE 11 does not seem to be recognizing MSFullscreenChange. I have this code in the script: document.addEventListener("MSFullscreenChange", function () { if (document.msFullscreenElement != null) { console.info("Went full screen"); } else { console.info("Exited full screen"); } }); In other words, I'm using the exact code shown here on Microsoft's own site, but nothing's being printed out in the console, and I know fullscreen is enabled. I also noticed I'm getting the SEC7118 message: XMLHttpRequest for https://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/videos/qywzeXowktA?v=2&alt=json required Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS). That wouldn't be affecting it, would it?

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 Post AJAX from from JavaScript

    - by ANDyW
    Hi, I got control with strongly typed View, with Ajax.BeginForm(). Now I would like to change submit method from <input type="submit" id="testClick" value="Submit" /> To some javascript method DoSubmit(). What I tried is : Invoke click on that submit button Invoke submit on form ('form1').submit(), document.forms['form1'].submit() jQuery forms with ('form1').AjaxSubmit(); Create jQuery AJAX $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: $("#form1").attr("action"), data: $("#form1").serialize(), success: function() { alert("epic win!!!1!1!") }, error: function(XMLHttpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown) { alert("epic fail!") } }); All those method created normal request (not AJAX), or they didn't work. So anyone know how I can do AJAX submit "Form", from JavaScript and strongly typed mechanism (public AcrionResult MyFormAction(FormModel model); ) will work?

  • JSON htmlentities javascript

    - by Wessel Rossing
    Hi! I am using an XMLHttpRequest to POST a JSON string to PHP. The JSON object is created in JavaScript and using the JSON2.js from json.org to create an JSON string representing the object. JSON.stringify(object); Whenever the object contains a string which has a special character in it, e.g. é, JavaScript does not give any error but PHP receives an empty array [] Is there a JavaScript function which produces the exact same resutls as the PHP function htmlentities() The data is send via POST, so the following functions escape() encodeURI() encodeURIComponent() are a bit overkill. Thanks!

  • Does there exist a jQuery plugin or JavaScript library that allows Venn Diagram presentation?

    - by knowncitizen
    I'm writing a jQuery application to allow analysis of data with the help of visual cues. My data is retrieved via XMLHttpRequest in the form of JSON. The visual cues include histograms, spark lines, and various other graph types. The idea is that the user is able to narrow their data via these various visual views. My question is thus - aside from the Google Charts API, does there exist a JavaScript way of presenting a Venn Diagram? Requirement: no Flash. Canvas is acceptable.

  • Reading xml document in firefox

    - by Searock
    I am trying to read customers.xml using javascript. My professor has taught us to read xml using `ActiveXObjectand he has given us an assignment to create a sample login page which checks username and password by reading customers.xml. I am trying to use DOMParser so that it works with firefox. But when I click on Login button I get this error. Error: syntax error Source File: file:///C:/Users/Searock/Desktop/home/project/project/login.html Line: 1, Column: 1 Source Code: customers.xml Here's my code. login.js var xmlDoc = 0; function checkUser() { var user = document.login.txtLogin.value; var pass = document.login.txtPass.value; //xmlDoc = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM"); /* xmlDoc = document.implementation.createDocument("","",null); xmlDoc.async = "false"; xmlDoc.onreadystatechange = redirectUser; xmlDoc.load("customers.xml"); */ var parser = new DOMParser(); xmlDoc = parser.parseFromString("customers.xml", "text/xml"); alert(xmlDoc.documentElement.nodeName); xmlDoc.async = "false"; xmlDoc.onreadystatechange = redirectUser; } function redirectUser() { alert(''); var user = document.login.txtLogin.value; var pass = document.login.txtPass.value; var log = 0; if(xmlDoc.readyState == 4) { xmlObj = xmlDoc.documentElement; var len = xmlObj.childNodes.length; for(i = 0; i < len; i++) { var nodeElement = xmlObj.childNodes[i]; var userXml = nodeElement.childNodes[0].firstChild.nodeValue; var passXml = nodeElement.childNodes[1].firstChild.nodeValue; var idXML = nodeElement.attributes[0].value if(userXml == user && passXml == pass) { log = 1; document.cookie = escape(idXML); document.login.submit(); } } } if(log == 0) { var divErr = document.getElementById('Error'); divErr.innerHTML = "<b>Login Failed</b>"; } } customers.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <customers> <customer custid="CU101"> <user>jack</user> <pwd>PW101</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> <customer custid="CU102"> <user>jill</user> <pwd>PW102</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> <customer custid="CU103"> <user>john</user> <pwd>PW103</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> <customer custid="CU104"> <user>jeff</user> <pwd>PW104</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> </customers> I get parsererror message on line alert(xmlDoc.documentElement.nodeName); I don't know what's wrong with my code. Can some one point me in a right direction? Edit : Ok, I found a solution. var xmlDoc = 0; var xhttp = 0; function checkUser() { var user = document.login.txtLogin.value; var pass = document.login.txtPass.value; var err = ""; if(user == "" || pass == "") { if(user == "") { alert("Enter user name"); } if(pass == "") { alert("Enter Password"); } return; } if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { xhttp=new XMLHttpRequest(); } else // IE 5/6 { xhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } xhttp.onreadystatechange = redirectUser; xhttp.open("GET","customers.xml",true); xhttp.send(); } function redirectUser() { var log = 2; var user = document.login.txtLogin.value; var pass = document.login.txtPass.value; if (xhttp.readyState == 4) { log = 0; xmlDoc = xhttp.responseXML; var xmlUsers = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('user'); var xmlPasswords = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('pwd'); var userLen = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('customer').length; var xmlCustomers = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('customer'); for (var i = 0; i < userLen; i++) { var xmlUser = xmlUsers[i].childNodes[0].nodeValue; var xmlPass = xmlPasswords[i].childNodes[0].nodeValue; var xmlId = xmlCustomers.item(i).attributes[0].nodeValue; if(xmlUser == user && xmlPass == pass) { log = 1; document.cookie = xmlId; document.login.submit(); break; } } } if(log == 0) { alert("Login failed"); } } Thanks.

  • High-Performance In-Browser Networking

    - by Jon Purdy
    (Similar in spirit to but different in practice from this question.) Is there any cross-browser-compatible, in-browser technology that allows a high-performance perstistent network connection between a server application and a client written in, say, Javascript? Think XmlHttpRequest on caffeine. I am working on a visualisation system that's restricted to at most a few users at once, and the server is pretty robust, so it can handle as much as it needs to. I would like to allow the client to have access to video streamed from the server at a minimum of about 20 frames per second, regardless of what their graphics hardware capabilities are. Simply put: is this doable without resorting to Flash or Java?
