  • Copy a Ubuntu install?

    - by Hailwood
So short story is that I am wanting to grab my ubuntu install, back up to an external disk, delete everything from my hdd, repartition my hdd, put my ubuntu install back. Long story is. I finally got my recovery discs, so I do not need to recovery partitions, not the mention my hdd is kinda messy, So I am going to wipe it and put everything back. Thing is I don't want to have to re-install everything, I would rather just copy/paste my ubuntu install if possible. Oh, What I should also mention is that I will be dual booting windows!

  • LightScythe Creates Huge Light Paintings

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this year we showed you how an LED POV staff could be used to visualize network data. This build takes it to another level and allows you to imprint entire words and images into photos. Gavin, a hardware hacker from Sydney, built an open-source POV (persistence of vision) staff after the Wi-Fi visualizer inspired him to begin playing with large POV builds. He built his POV staff using LED strips, wireless controllers, and a laptop to send the signals at the proper intervals to the staff. He can write words, create images, and even send Pac-Man racing across the frame. Hit up the link below to read more about his project and grab his schematics and parts lists. • dhcpd fails to start

    - by TECHPREACHER
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 I then used apt-get to grab isc-dhcp3. I removed Network-Manager and manually configured my network interface eth0. In addition, I hand edited a dhcpd.conf file and designated eth0 as the listen port in /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server. However, each time I attempt to start dhcpd it fails. When I view the syslog file, the last line is as follows: "Not configured to listen on any interfaces!" My eth0 interface works fine. I can ping addresses inside and outside the network and perform DNS queries. Any help would be greatly appreciated. AJ

  • Getting a texture from a renderbuffer in OpenGL?

    - by Rushyo
I've got a renderbuffer (DepthStencil) in an FBO and I need to get a texture from it. I can't have both a DepthComponent texture and a DepthStencil renderbuffer in the FBO, it seems, so I need some way to convert the renderbuffer to a DepthComponent texture after I'm done with it for use later down the pipeline. I've tried plenty of techniques to grab the depth component from the renderbuffer for weeks but I always come out with junk. All I want at the end is the same texture I'd get from an FBO if I wasn't using a renderbuffer. Can anyone post some comprehensive instructions or code that covers this seemingly simple operation? EDIT: Linky to an extract version of the code http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9279501/fbo.cs Screeny of the Depth of Field effect + FBO - without depth(!) http://i.stack.imgur.com/Hj9Oe.jpg Screeny without Depth of Field effect + FBO - depth working fine http://i.stack.imgur.com/boOm1.jpg

  • Reinstall Ubuntu on Custom Partitions

    - by Forerunner117
I am attempting to reinstall ubuntu 13.04 without losing my installed software and /home docs. I have read countless threads on this same topic, but nothing seems to apply to my situation. When I originally installed, I had created a separate partition for /home, but I am now unsure of which partition that was. Based on the picture below, where should I be installing the new copy? Also, will I run into problems since I am now running 13.10 and want to put 13.04 back on it? Should I grab 12.04 or 13.10 for this reinstall? Picture: http://i.stack.imgur.com/FL2SY.png (Note: I am performing this reinstall due to a complete muck up of my unity/compiz settings and configuration, resulting in no desktop. I've done my best to resolve this problem first before resorting to this.)

  • How long does Wubi take to download and/or save place?

    - by Oscar Godson
I'm downloading Wubi now and it's been downloading the ISO torrent for maybe 2hrs-ish. Is there anyway to check how far along it is? Also, is there a way to save my place or if I cancel this or my computer dies, will it lose the place? If I DO lose my place. Can I download a ISO myself and place it somewhere that Wubi will grab from so it just installs it, not downloads the ISO? (this way I can watch the % too) Im at a conference and my internet is fluctuating between 3-7MBs...if that helps

  • Sidestep Automatically Secures Your Mac’s Connection on Unsecure Networks

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re wary of browsing on wide open public Wi-Fi networks (and you should be), Sidestep is a free Mac application that routes your connection on an unsecure network through a secure proxy. Sidestep automatically detects when you are on an unprotected wireless network and forms an encrypted tunnel to the proxy you specified during setup. Anytime you login a wide open Wi-Fi node (such as at a coffee shop, airport, or other public area) you won’t be broadcasting your login credentials and other personal information in what amounts to plain text into the air around you. Anyone snooping on you or the network in general will simply see your stream of encrypted data going to the proxy. Hit up the link below to grab a copy and read additional information about setting up the program and finding/configuring a proxy server. Sidestep is freeware, Mac OS X only. • Detect Open Space in Farseer

    - by Tom G
I'm working on a 2D platformer using XNA and Farseer. I would like the player's character to be able to grab and climb up ledges. Detecting a collision between the player and the side of a wall is simple enough with the OnCollision delegate, but I have to admit I'm a bit stumped on how to detect that there's enough clearance for the PC to mount the ledge. Essentially, I want to ensure there's an appropriately sized rectangle above and to the left or right of the PC (depending on their direction) and I'm not sure how I would check for such a space. Any suggestions on how to determine there is nothing in the simulated world within some bounding rectangle?

  • Rehosting content from another server

    - by Lana_M
We have a set of static pages that will augment a customer's existing site. The pages will not reside on the customer's servers for logistical reasons and because we need to maintain control of the content. The plan is for the customer to set up a mod_rewrite rule that will funnel certain types of URLs to a single server-side handler script that will grab the appropriate file from a CDN and just output its content. This illustrates the approach: <?php echo(file_get_contents(str_replace($customer_host, $cdn_host, $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']))); ?> Can anyone think of pitfalls or offer up a different approach? Is there some way to circumvent a script altogether?

  • Callbacks: when to return value, and when to modify parameter?

    - by MarkN
    When writing a callback, when is best to have the callback return a value, and when is it best to have the callback modify a parameter? Is there a difference? For example, if we wanted to grab a list of dependencies, when would you do this: function GetDependencies(){ return [{"Dep1" : 1.1}, {"Dept2": 1.2}, {"Dep3" : 1.3}]; } And when would you do this? function RegisterDependencies(register){ register.add("Dep1", 1.1); register.add("Dep2", 1.2); register.add("Dep3", 1.3); }

  • How should I handle a redirect to an identity provider during a web api data request

    - by Erds
Scenario I have a single-page web app consisting purely of html, css, and javascript. After initial load and during use, it updates various views with data from one or more RESTful apis via ajax calls. The api calls return data in a json format. Each web api may be hosted on independent domains. Question During the ajax callout, if my authorization token is not deemed valid by the web api, the web api will redirect me (302) to the identity provider for that particular api. Since this is an ajax callout for data and not necessarily for display, i need to find a way to display the identity provider's authentication page. It seems that I should trap that redirect, and open up another view to display the identity provider's login page. Once the oauth series of redirects is complete, i need to grab the token and retrigger my ajax data call with the token attached. Is this a valid approach, and if so are there any examples showing the ajax handling of the redirects?

  • what is the purpose of arrows?

    - by Simon
I am learning functionnal programming with Haskell, and I try to grab concepts by first understanding why do I need them. I would like to know the goal of arrows in functional programming languages. What problem do they solve? I checked http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Haskell/Understanding_arrows and http://www.cse.chalmers.se/~rjmh/afp-arrows.pdf. All I understand is that they are used to describe graphs for computations, and that they allow easier point free style coding. The article assume that point free style is generally easier to understand and to write. This seems quite subjective to me. In another article (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Haskell/StephensArrowTutorial#Hangman:_Main_program), a hangman game is implemented, but I cannot see how arrows makes this implementation natural. I could find a lot of papers describing the concept, but nothing about the motivation. What I am missing?

  • Is HTML5 more secure to develop for than Silverlight?

    - by King Chan
I'm learning Silverlight, and I know that if I master it, I can apply the same concepts to WPF, which means I can do either web or desktop development pretty easily. But I've read articles and followed the discussion online, and I understand HTML5 is gaining traction for being cross-platform, and a lot of people seem to be moving to HTML5. From my understanding, any HTML5 application would be built with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash). But is it secure? It seems like anyone can easily use their browser's "view source" option and grab your code. Is this something I should be worried about, or is there a way to protect against it?

  • A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server]

    - by Gopinath
Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? Thanks Yamo This article titled,A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server], was originally published at Tech Dreams. • How can I link to callback functions in Lua such that the callbacks will be updated when the scripts are reloaded?

    - by Raptormeat
I'm implementing Lua scripting in my game using LuaBind, and one of the things I'm not clear on is the logistics of reloading the scripts live ingame. Currently, using the LuaBind C++ class luabind::object, I save references to Lua callbacks directly in the classes that use them. Then I can use luabind::call_function using that object in order to call the Lua code from the C++ code. I haven't tested this yet, but my assumption is that if I reload the scripts, then all the functions will be redefined, BUT the references to the OLD functions will still exist in the form of the luabind::object held by the C++ code. I would like to be able to swap out the old for the new without manually having to manage this for every script hook in the game. How best to change this so the process works? My first thought is to not save a reference to the function directly, but maybe save the function name instead, and grab the function by name every time we want to call it. I'm looking for better ideas!

  • gtk_widget_grab_focus() jumping to next field automatically?

    - by Ravi Raj
I am creating a 'C' project with glade and gtk. I want a focus on a gtkentry field naming txt_abc and so I called the function: gtk_widget_grab_focus (txt_abc); There is another gtkentry widget just after txt_abc widget naming txt_def. My problem is instead of getting focus on txt_abc widget, the cursor is automatically being focused on txt_def widget, when I am running the application. One more thing, when I am setting the focus at txt_def widget by calling the code: gtk_widget_grab_focus (txt_def); the control is again being focused on the next widget on the window, i.e. txt_name. I want the focus exactly on the widget I am setting the grab signal. How to resolve this problem.
