• No resizing / Auto fit and Unity with Ubuntu 9.10 as Guest at all

  Hi! Problem 1: I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and Workstation 7.01. All VMs (WinXP, Win7, Debian) I run do not resize any more. Problem 2: Unity Mode "Bar" works for short and disapears after seconds .. opened programs with unity mode work well, but the bar disapears History: I changed from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, no VM was moved or changed. Latest VMWare Tools are installed, Auto fit Guest is activated. I am quite sure, that resizing / auto fitting and Unity Mode worked well with Ubuntu 9.04 thx for a hint, i hope didn't overlook something ..

• Munin does not show Apache/mySQL stats in web view

  I'm facing a very strange Problem. I just set up Munin on a fresh Ubuntu slice with a common LAMP Stack. Everything works great, except that Munin does just not show the Apache/mySQL stats in the web view. Everything else in the web view works great, Apache works, mySQL works. I even tried calling the plugins via console: sudo munin-run apache_accesses And it works fine. AFAIK Munin log files are not telling me any problems.. My only hint: when I run munin-run without sudo it gives me a "Permission denied" - could this be the problem?

• EC2 instance store cloning or to ebs via guy management console

  I have found similar questions here but the answer are either outdated or are from the command line. The case is this. I have an EC2 instance using instance store (this was the only AMI available for Debian 6 in Ireland). Now through the AWS GUI I can do a snapshot of the instance volume and/or even create a volume. But an image made from the snapshot doesn't boot. What is the best solution to either clone an EC2 instance that uses instance store OR from the created snapshot of the instance store to launch a new EBS instance (identical clone) FROM the gui aws management console and not command line ? Before turning this down consider that there is not similar question on how to do it via the aws management console. hint can't be done is not an appropriate answer. As you can create a snapshot of the instance store backed instance and/or a volume and create an AMI from that snapshot.

My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

• External routing for local interfaces in a virtualized network

  Current setup: br0| |-- tun10 -pipe-tun0(192.240.240.1) |-- tun11 -pipe-tun1(192.240.240.2) |-- tun12 -pipe-tun2(192.240.240.3) The pipe program is a custom program that forwards data back2back between two tun interfaces. The idea is puting 2 programs in .2 and .3 while keeping .1 as the local interface in the current machine. The main problem is that I want to route packets to .2 and to .3 through .1 and br0, but as they are local interfaces, the kernel ignores any routing instruction, it just delivers the packet to the proper interface. Tried iptables, but the nat table doesn't even see ping packets to those ifaces. A "ping 192.240.240.2" delivers a icmp packet with source and dest .2 to tun1, ideally it should deliver a source .1 dest .2 at tun1 through tun0-br0-tun1 Any hint?   My company is hosting a website in a server with IIS, SQL Server and a 3rd party windows service (written in C#, source code available for amendments). We bought a new identical server, composed by: 1x Quad Core, 12GB RAM, 4x160GB SATA Raid 5, Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, Public IP. We aim to put all webpages and the 3rd party windows service in an high-availability state. After some lab-testing on how to configure Failover Clustering and Hyper-V, we have deep doubts on what the "best" solution would be, by "best" meaning maintainable and able to correctly handle a physical server failure. Any suggestion on how we should configure the two servers? We don't need all the configuration's step, just an hint on the right direction to follow.

• Access Bind9 DNS in Virtualbox on Host

  I've set up a Ubuntu 10.04 Virtual Box with a Bind9 DNS server. The Box has a NAT Network connection for internet access and a host-only adapter for static ip connections from the host (OSX Lion). Thats the only way i managed to get internet and static ip inside the box, guess there is a better one ... The DNS works fine from inside the virtualbox, but not from the host. The http and ftp on the guest system is accessible via both addresses, so connection between host and guest are fine i guess. I tried to add both IP's as name servers. I'm completely new to Bind9 and DNS configuration. Anybody has a hint for me whats wrong? Or how i have to configure the DNS server?

• vhost.conf with plesk makes infinite loop

  So I'm trying to make rewrite rules for my just migrated site and now we're using PLESK (unfortunately in my opinion). So, in order to make those rewrites I'm using the vhost.conf file in mydomain/conf folderm and I execute: /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/websrvmng -u --vhost-name=mydomain.org so that includes my file into the httpd configuration. However, no matter what I write in my vhost.conf file, it will make my site go in an infinite loop whenever I try to load an URL that's not just the domain. Example: mydomain.org Works just fine. mydomain.org/event/nameofevent Will try endlessly to load and eventually my browser will detect that infinite loop. I though I was writing something incorrectly in my vhost.conf file but I even tried it with the file empty (not a single line). It will still try to load endlessly. Anybody can hint me if I'm skipping a step before (like any activation that should be done beorehand or something). Thanks in advance.

• Can't login with blank password on Lion OSX

  Having slight issue with my Lion install. I removed the password from the admin account as it's not desired. However when I'm on the login screen, it wont accept the blank password. It shows the user account and a password box, and when you enter wrong password it gives you the hint. The only way I've found to get in is by constantly spamming the user icon until it logs in. Has anybody else experienced this or knows of a fix?

• Disk image of a Windows 2000 NTFS hard drive

  Hi, I need to create a disk image from a Windows 2000, NTFS formatted, hard drive. This image has to be used to create backup hard drives to replace the original disk in case an emergency situation arises. This is a medical equipment, so I cannot physically disconnect the disk because I would violate the warranty of the equipment. This machine has a DVD R/W, ethernet and USB 2.0 access, and we have the rights to install any application I want in the Windows 2000 system. 1) Is there any way to do this without installing any new software in the Windows 2000 system, so it is the least invasive as possible? 2) If we have to install a software to do the backup, which software do you recommend? • Hyperic HQ says the server is down, but it is not!

  Hi, I've been using HQ for a couple months now, and everything worked fine. But since yesterday all resources go down for a couple hours, and then everything restores to normal, and then go down again without doing anything. The server of course is working, the HQ server and agent are both working, and the IPs were not modified. I've tried to re-run the setup in the HQ agent, and it did not change anything. Agent is in Windows 2008, and Server is in Windows 2003. I'm using HQ Version 4.1.2 (build #1053 - May 06, 2009 - Release Build) Any hint? Thanks! Update: I guess (although I'm not sure) it stopped working when the disk on the server went full, with 0 bytes of free space. Of course I've freed more than 15gbs and restarted the HQ server/database.

  Hello, I'm currently managing a site that I feel could be optimized and utilized to be much faster, however, I'm having difficulty finding reliable information to do it. I find the Apache documentation to be a hard read, and too technical about things I don't have a strong grasp on. I'm just looking for a good beginner/intermediate book about server administration to learn as much as possible about Apache, as well as how to create a nice secure, robust server that doesn't crash at the first hint of unusual traffic surges.   Having run ./configure --help there is a list of options that can be tweaked in the future build, for example --enable-luajit Enable LuaJit Support --disable-env clearing/setting of ENV vars Though any option can be used with enable and disable prefix, some are presented as --enable-me and other as --disable-me in the help output. Is this supposed to hint me of default values, and if yes, how do I to figure them out? Because either way makes sense to me: luajit is disabled by default and therefore it is presented as --enable-luajit so I can enable it by conveniently copy-pasting it from help output to command line. being listed with --enable in help output indicates that luajit is enabled by default.

• Why is System listening on port 8000?

  I noticed by accident today that I have some unknown webserver listening on port 8000. Opening http://localhost:8000 just returns 404, so I don’t get any hint what exactly is listening there. I’ve used netstat -ano to find out, that the process with PID 4 is listening on that port. PID 4 is the System process. Why is my system listening on that port, without me actually starting a server? Or how can I find out what exactly is listening there? I’ve read the related questions about port 80 and port 443, but none of the services mentioned there were running on my system. And the other suggestions there didn’t work either. edit: The HTTP response of the server lists Microsoft-HTTPAPI/2.0 as the server. edit2: As requested by Shadok, here are the entries of TCPView with 8000 as the port. But I doubt it’s useful at all…

• writing data onto a linux live-dvd

  I have a server machine with a dvd-writer. I want to burn a linux live-dvd (openSUSE is preferred) with a pre-configured web server, so that after booting the web server should be ready to serve. The web server has a sqlite database (with very less data). But after rebooting the system, all data in the database will get lost. Is it possible to store all necessary data onto this live-dvd as well? If it were a usb drive. I would create two partition and mount the second partition with read-write permission. But I have no idea how to create two partition onto a dvd Any hint is appreciated

• How to display recently installed programs and when they were installed?

  I have a Windows XP and I just installed about 12 new programs. Big mistake! Before I installed these programs, my internet connection was running great. But now after installing and restarting my laptop, the internet is crawling. How can I see what was changed? Hint: prior to installing these 12 programs, I installed IE version 8. So probably if I removed that it would fix it, but the problem is I need IE in order for my SQL/C# web application to work properly.

  Hi, My problem: error message when playing blu-ray movies stating that the HDCP encryption could not be established. My setup: A new projector (EPSON EMP TW700) with a HDCP-compliant HDMI port a PC with a brand-new graphics adapter (Sapphire HD 4350 512MB DDR2) supporting HDCP Connection made with a DVI cable (it's installed in my wall) and a DVI-HDMI adapter to connect the projector Latest drivers and software My questions: What can I do to establish the HDCP connection? Would it help to use the HDMI output of the graphics adapter instead of the DVI (could it be that the HDCP chip is only supported on HDMI?) Any other ideas? I am very thankful for any hint.

• ubuntu Grub boot hangs on external usb drive

  Hi, i just gave xubuntu another try and installed it ordinarily on a external usb harddisk. I have another harddisk installed inside the laptop that has Windows Xp on it. Now the problem: When I boot from the external drive the boot menu of Grub 2 shows up and i see all installed bootable partitions including windows. Now I select Xubuntu and wait. When the Xubuntu Logo shows up the boot process hangs. Now the funny thing. When the logo shows up I can unplug the usb drive and reconnect it real fast. Then the boot process will continue!!! • How to start Internet Explorer 8 without any bars

  Hi. At work I use LogMeIn to do remote assistance for our customers. The only thing which is bugging me is that you can switch to fullscreen mode but it doesn't offer to open the remote session in a new window without address bar, bookmarks bar and stuff. So I'm looking for a way to open the LogMeIn Tech Console in a new browser window without any bars. Fullscreen mode is nice but not usable when working with other applications besides the remote session. The Internet Explorer Kiosk mode also doesn't fit my needs. I created a bookmarklet with works quite nice but having a link directly on my desktop would be perfect. Does anyone have a hint on that? I use IE8 on Windows XP SP3. Thx in advance Dennis

• Unusable Source for Ubuntu image on Xen 3

  Hi all, I'm trying to create a new VM in Xen 3, running Ubuntu 10.4 (32 bit) as the guest OS. Xen 3 is installed on a machine running OpenSuse 11.2. I downloaded the Ubuntu image from the ubuntu.com website and I mounted it on /dev/loop0. When I try to create the new VM in Xen with the given source, Xen complains the "source is unusable". I've also checked the md5 sum for the image. It's fine. Any suggestion or hint that could help me?

Currently I have a set of Apache .htaccess rewrite rules from a PHP script: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php [QSA,L] In my understanding, if the requested URI is not a file/directory/sym-link, append it to index.php eg. www.a.com/hello/world --> www.a.com/index.php/hello/world I attempted to convert to lighttpd specification: url.rewrite-if-not-file = ( "^(.*)$" = "index.php/$1" ) However, it doesn't work. I suspect that is due to misuse of $1. I tried to use $0/%0 or something else but they fail. Would you please provide me a hint on making the syntax work? Thank you!

I can deploy them as MSIs via group policies just fine. But what happens when the client software detects updates? What are common ways to handle this? Disable the software's autoupdate feature? My virtual server is so far only accessible through an IP address, no DNS entry yet, and so far none needed either. The problem I have is with Apache2, the virtual hosts are puzzling me. What I need is: Access to my project (based on Symfony2) from the outside with the IP address Access to my project from localhost What I have got: Access from the outside results in rendering the websites in /var/www/vhosts/htdocs/default, while from the inside results in rendering the websites in /var/www. Why the difference? What is a recommended configuration for my use case?

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint?
