• Virtual Server HDD shrinks without apparent reason

  We have a virtual hosted Linux server, and in the last few months every now and then the HDD shrinks from 400GB down to the exact byte count that is in use. All existing data can be downloaded and displayed without a problem, but we can't upload or edit any files because of the "full" hard drive. Here is a screenshot, where "size" should be 400GB: This has happened twice before, and again today. The last times, when I reported the issue to the host, they said "that isn't possible, you must be doing it wrong", but soon after the call, the problem vanished without us doing anything, so I suppose that they have some kind of problem they're not willing to admit. Even after the fact, they acted like nothing was wrong and wrote me a mail in which they explained that I can use "df -h" to view available disk space (well duh, how do you think I noticed this particular issue?). Questions about if and what they had done were ignored. It has happened around the 25th to 28th of the month, so I suspect that they might have a cronjob running every 30 days or so which wreaks havoc with some VM configs. I just want to understand the problem, but the host support hasn't been very helpful in that regard. I have tried Googling the issue, but any combination of search terms I can come up with just gives me tutorials on how to change HDD size in a virtual machine. a) What could be the cause of shrinking HDD size in a Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS server? Could there be anything in our virtual machine or is it more likely to be an issue with the vm host? b) Can I do anything about it without needing to contact the host's support? c) Is there anyway I can prevent this from happening at all?

• IIS7 dynamic_compression_not_success Reason 12

  So, I'm a bit of an IIS7 n00b but I've used most of the old IIS systems going back to 3. I'm trying to turn on dynamic compression and it's working, mostly. It doesn't work for my ADO.Net Data Service (Astoria) requests, batched or not. I found the freb tracing which was really helpful. And what I come up with unbatched requests is that it returns Reason Code 12, NO_MATCHING_CONTENT_TYPE. OK, so I don't have the matching mime type specified, that's easy. • Reason for socket.error

  Hi, I am a complete newbie when it comes to python, and programming in general. I've been working on a little webapp for the past few weeks trying to improve my coding chops. A few days ago my laptop was stolen so I went out and got a new MacBook Pro. Thank God I had everything under subversion control. The problem is now that I am on my new machine a script that I was running has stopped working and I have no idea why. This is really the only part of what I have been writing that I borrowed heavily for existing scripts. It is from the widely available whois.py script and I have only slightly modified it as follows (see below). It was running fine on my old system (running ubuntu), but now the socket.error is being raised. I'm completely lost on this, and would really appreciate any help. • Does your analytic solution tell you what questions to ask?

  Analytic solutions exist to answer business questions. Conventional wisdom holds that if you can answer business questions quickly and accurately, you can take better business decisions and therefore achieve better business results and outperform the competition. Most business questions are well understood (read structured) so they are relatively easy to ask and answer. Every book, blog, article, or answer i've seen gives hypothetical examples that don't apply to the/my real world. i really don't want to flood StackOverflow with hundreds of questions all titled "How do i unit-test this?" There must be another place i can go to ask for real solutions. Where can i go to get practical answers to unit-testing questions? • Microsoft Interview Attire

  Hi all, I have an interview with Microsoft in a week and am wondering what to wear. The recruiter said Business Casual but that means very little to me. I'm sure some people here have already had interviews at MS. Anyone care to share what the interviewers were wearing? Would I be out of place with jeans and a polo shirt?   Supposed you were asked in an interview "How would you implement Google Search?" How would you answer such a question? There might be resources out there that explain how some pieces in Google are implemented (BigTable, MapReduce, PageRank, ...), but that doesn't exactly fit in an interview. What overall architecture would you use, and how would you explain this in a 15-30 minute time span? I would start with explaining how to build a search engine that handles ~ 100k documents, then expand this via sharding to around 50M docs, then perhaps another architectural/technical leap. This is the 20,000 feet view. What I'd like is the details - how you would actually answer that in an interview. Which data structures would you use. What services/machines is your architecture composed of. What would a typical query latency be? What about failover / split brain issues? Etc...

I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. • What can I do when the interviewer doesn't know the answer to his/her own question?

  Yesterday I had a terrible experience in an interview. Interviewer asked me about pure virtual function. I said, It may or may not have definition in base class, but derived classes should provide definition unless they also want to be abstract class. But interviewer kept on asking that "Can pure virtual have definition !!! ???"... I said yes. Again he said "Pure ?" I said yes. It is allowed, derived classes can explicitly call that function if they want that particular behavior. He sent me out. I am sure that he doesn't know the fact that pure virtual function can have definition. How to deal with this kind of Interviewers ? After asking 2nd time, should i lie that it can't have definition ? :) Or i should stick to my words and loose the job opportunity ?

• Am I unhireable?

  I've received my B.S. in Software Engineering in August 2010 and I've been looking for a job since. I've gotten two interviews since that went up to the technical phone interview and then they were no longer interested. One of the recruiters mentioned to me that they thought my fundamentals weren't strong enough. What do I need to brush up on in order to get past the technical phone interview. My language of most experience is C#. I know Object Oriented Programming. I know what the difference between an interface and an abstract class is. I've applied to positions from game programming to WPF/Silverlight. I have a portfolio website www.samarmstrong.me. It also has my resume on there. I never had real internship. Am I unhireable?
