  • Microsoft Licensing Scenario/Questions [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my software licensing question? I am a member of a team developing a third party application (APP) that listens for and services connections from remote devices via TCP. Also, some of these remote devices allow 1 or more users to interact with the remote device. On some of the remote devices, it is impossible for a user to interact with the device. The user/remote device makes no use of any Windows Server service - not DHCP, not IIS, not File Server, not Print Serer, not AD. The remote device's only connection to the Windows Server machine is through the APP's TCP ports. Our company has no interaction with Microsoft. We do not have a Microsoft sales team. Past inquiries have determined that it is cheaper for us to buy Microsoft software (and CALs) retail than to enter into any kind of "arrangement" with Microsoft. I have many questions about SQL Server CALs and Windows Server 2008 CALs. How can I obtain authoritative/legally binding answers? I am not looking for FREE legal advice. I AM looking for FREE advice about who/what/where I can responsibly spend my money to get meaningful information. I fear that passing this on to the local company law firm will just mean that I will be paying them to educate themselves on Microsoft licensing. And if that's like writing code to a new Microsoft API - they are not going to get it right the first time. Going to Microsoft for answers sounds like swimming up to a hungry shark and asking "One leg or two?" I am hoping someone has been down this road before and knows a law firm/lawyer that is experienced in these matters. Any help/suggestion welcome. Thanks.

  • Questions for anyone who has used Sun Type 7 keyboards

    So I noticed that Oracle is still selling Sun Type 7 keyboard and mouse packages. I was thinking of buying one for a Linux box at my house so I had easy access to some of the extra keys such as Compose and Alt-GR. I have some questions though before I do for anyone who has used these -- it's been a very long time since I've used an actual Sun keyboard. They show that both a PC and UNIX layout is available. Unfortunately, I cannot find anywhere a clear picture of both layouts to determine the difference. Can anyone post pictures of the 2 different layouts for me to take a look at? I don't remember what some of the "Solaris shortcut" keys do, like Props, Front, Stop, and Again. Are these vestiges from OpenWindows? Do they have any usage on a modern Solaris like OpenSolaris running Gnome? Do they automatically map to anything useful on Linux, or am I going to have to map them myself to something with XModMap? When I last used a Sun keyboard, I remember it having a rather mushy feel to it, so I am wondering if any touch typists could weigh in on whether this keyboard "feels nice" for day to day touch typing.   • Displaying count for current_user 'likes' on a 'question' in questions/show.html.erb view

    I have an application that allows for users to create questions, create answers to questions, and 'like' answers of others. When a current_user lands on the /views/questions/show.html.erb page I am trying to display the total 'likes' for all answers on that question, for the current_user. In my Likes table I am collecting the question_id, site_id and the user_id and I have the appropriate associations set up between user, question, answers and likes. I think I just need to call this information the right way, which I can't seem to figure out. All of the below is taking place in the /views/questions/show.html.erb page. I have tried the following: <% div_for current_user do %> You have liked this question <%= @question.likes.count %> times <% end %> Which returns all the 'likes' for the question but not filtered by current_user You have liked this question <%= current_user.question.likes.count %> times Which gives an error of 'undefined method `question' You have liked this question <%= @question.current_user.likes.count %> times Which gives an error of 'undefined method `current_user' I have tried a couple of other things but they don't make as much sense as the above to me. What am I missing?

  • New Computer Build Questions

    I'm in the process of gathering parts and specs for a new machine. I wear many hats, so the machine needs to do a lot. I need at least 2 monitor support, if not three. I also play many online MMOs (wow, aion, war hammer, etc), along with some freelance programming projects. I already have a case which is very large, so it will fit anything. I have 2 other SATA HDs. They are more for storage and basic programs. I feel that the best improvement could be done with a solid state HD, true or not? I'm more of a software/programming guy, so ANY input at all on improving this system build would be appreciated. I have a few questions with this list. AMD or Intel? I don't know enough about either to choose what would best fit me. Thanks! **EDIT: Thanks for the input everyone! Here are some answers: I do a lot of programming and gaming, so I do need things for both. The newer video card covers the gaming aspect, as well as allowing me to have many monitors. (hopefully upgrade to dual 30' or more) I don't need any additional HDs at this time. I have a SATA 160g and 120g from my previous computer, and a NAS system with over 2TB of storage on the homenetwork. I just wanted a fast HD for OS/programs/games. With the memory. I have used G.SKILL before in 2 system builds. It's done excellent for me in them. Very stable. **EDIT2: Made some additional changes. Lowered the power supply down to 750, which saves me more $$. Also changed the SSD to 2 WD 650G HDs.   • Some questions regarding Hostname

    I just bought a new VPS hosting plan and i have a few questions. Hope someone here can clear the doubts for me. 1) Is it necessary to have a real domain for a vps hostname? I suppose i can just use a non-real domain like anydomain.com and something like 'server' for the computer name. Therefore i'll end up with something like server.anydomain.com as the vps's hostname. I want to do this for the sake of putting in a hostname to configure the vps to get it going . So, since this non-real domain name does not need to be publicly accessible i don't need to register or own it and instead access the server by the ip address. Is that correct? But i suppose that this also depends upon if my web host allows that? 2)I would also like to run some real sites with real domain names on this vps, so can i just configure the zone file on the primary nameserver and make entries for these domains and point an A record at the Vps's IP to make them publicly accessible over the internet? For example for my 1st domain i could make an entry like this: $TTL 86400 mydomain1.com. IN SOA ns1.mywebhost.com. \ admin.mydomain1.com. ( 2004011522 ; Serial no., based on date 21600 ; Refresh after 6 hours 3600 ; Retry after 1 hour 604800 ; Expire after 7 days 3600 ; Minimum TTL of 1 hour ) server IN A 200._._._ ns1.mywebhost.com. IN A 216._._._ ns2.mywebhost.com. IN A 205._._._ @ IN NS ns1.mywebhost.com. @ IN NS ns2.mywebhost.com. @ IN MX 10 server www IN CNAME server server IN CNAME @ (so this particular line tells the nameserver to point the url mydomain1.com to server.anydomain.com at the particular ip addresss in the A record.... is that right?) (..... ............................so on........ ......................................... ......................................... ......................................... ......................................... ......................................... Is that correct? 3) Suppose for my vps hostname, i ignorantly chose a domain that someone else alreadys owns , however i think that it won't affect the public accessibility of the real domain or website since only the real owner of the domain has the rights to provide for the nameservers addresses in the TLD registeries through his Domian Registerar? Is that correct? 4)Can i change my vps's hostname later? Would this create any complications?

  • FTP server questions

    I'm currently trying to set up a home FTP server using debian and proftpd and I've run into a problem that has me confused. I have most things set up already, I believe, but I cannot access my ftp server using my external ip. I've forwarded the correct port on my router and I've checked http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to be sure that it is, in fact, opened. I've used telnet locally on my server to check that the port accepts connections. I am able to use ftp via LAN. But, I still cannot access anything externally. I'm thinking that there's still some router configuration to be done in order to fix this, such as routing all connections on my ftp port to my server via the internal ip, but I can't find any option on my router to do this. Is this a necessary step? There is an option to use DMZ hosting, but I'd rather avoid it if possible. I can provide additional information as requested, please let me know any information that you think could help at all. Thanks. -Brad PS - I have a Telus Actiontec Modem/Router Update - !! Trying my ftp server out at work, worked! I guess I did set it up correctly after all. What is confusing me, though, is why doesn't the server allow me to connect locally anymore? That seems very weird to me. Also, I don't really understand why I am denied outright if I attempt to connect from the same network using the external address. I'll look into it more when I get home, but thank you guys for your help. Update 2 - I found the problem with not being able to connect locally anymore. I was setting the masquerade address to my external IP and for some reason that was causing it to hang on MLSD when I connected using my LAN address. I've removed the masquerade address and I'm going to check if I need it at work tomorrow. I'll update this page if I find anything.

    Where do you have the most success getting your ArcGIS development questions answered? ESRI forums? Stack Overflow? Google? Mailing lists? Blog posts? ESRI documentation? I can usually get answers to my ASP.NET/Oracle/JavaScript/C# questions in short order, but questions about ESRI products and APIs are a different matter. Posts founder in the forums, Google returns void, etc. I'm sure this is not uncommon for niche commercial products, but frustrating nevertheless. What works for you? Please share.

    I have often fought the urge to ask questions that I know aren't appropriate on SO, because I personally haven't come across another online group who's opinions I would trust as much. What sites do you frequent that you have found good participation from a smart group of people where you can ask questions that are related to software, but not programming problems? This community also has a vast depth of knowledge about things related to software like marketing, graphics/UI, running a small business, working in bad jobs, etc. that would greatly benefit everyone else. Where do we go to tap all that knowledge? On stackoverflow.uservoice.com there is a popular suggested feature to sanction, or add to SO, a place to hold discussions that aren't about specific programming questions. It seems that the suggestion has been denied in the past though.

    I'm new to stackoverflow and I'm looking for a question list, like the one on top, which just contains questions about interested tags. For example I'm interested in Java, but I have no clue about Python and questions about python clutters my questions page. I don't have answers concerning any python problem. I think it's too exhausting to enter my interested tags in the search combined with [xxx] OR. Is there a usable way to do this? By the way, what for are interested tags used right now? I added some in my profile but didn't see a benefit.

  • Exchange 2010 OWA - a few questions about using multiple mailboxes

    We have an Exchange 2010 SP2 deployment and we need that our users could access multiple mailboxes in OWA. The problem is that a user (eg John Smith) needs to access not just somebody else's (eg Tom Anderson) mailboxes, but his OWN mailboxes, e.g. in different domains: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc. Of course it is preferable for the user to work with all of his mailboxes from a single window. Such mailboxes can be added as multiple Exchange accounts in Outlook, that works almost fine. But in OWA, there are problems: 1) In the left pane - as I've learned - we can open only Inbox folders from other mailboxes. No way to view all folders like in Outlook? 2) With Send-As permissions set, when trying to send a message from another address, that message is saved in the Sent Items folder of the mailbox that is opened in OWA, and not in the mailbox the message is sent from. The same thing with the trash can. Is there a way to fix that? Also, this problem exists in desktop Outlook when mailboxes are added automatically via the Auto Mapping feature, so that we need to turn it off and add the accounts manually. Is there a simpler workaround? 3) Okay, suppose we only open Inbox folders in the left pane. The problem is that the mailbox names shown there are formed from Display Name attributes. But those names are all identical! All the mailboxes are owned by John Smith, so they should be all named John Smith - so that letter recepient sees "John Smith" in the "from" field, no matter what mailbox it is sent from. Also, the user knows what's his name - no need to tell him. He wants to know what mailbox he works with. So we need a way to either: a) customize OWA to show mailbox email address instead of user Display Name, or b) make Exchange use another attribute to put in the "from" field when sending letters 4) Okay, we can switch between mailboxes using "Open Other Mailbox" in the upper-right corner menu. But: a) To select a mailbox we need to enter its name (or first letters). It there a way to show a list of links to mailboxes the user has full access to? Eg in the page header... b) If we start entering the first letters, we see a popup list with possible mailboxes to be opened. But there are all mailboxes (apparently from GAL), not only mailboxes the user has permission to open! How to filter that popup list? c) The same problem as in (3) with mailbox naming. We can see the opened mailbox email address ONLY in the page URL, which is insufficient for many users. In the left pane we see "John Smith" which is useless. 5) Each mailbox is tied with a separate user in AD. If one has several mailboxes, we need to have additional dummy AD accounts, create additional OUs to store them, etc. That's not very nice, is there any standartized, optimal way to build such a structure? We would really appreciate any answers or additional info for any of these questions. Thank you in advance.

  • Reason why Windows can't be installed on Ubuntu , Any Help though?

    Well I got my Windows Vista .iso file , I put it on my USB Drive , Extracted , Then I restarted and went to "Boot Device Options" Clicked "Generic USB" (What I labeled when I formatted) Then it stood on a black screen for 15 minutes , Then just went to Ubuntu , Now I found out exactly what happened Why Windows WONT work on Ubuntu is a simple reason Not if you save it in NFTS Format or MSDOS (Both Windows Formats) , Not if you use anything special , This even applies to the Ubuntu downloader , One specific reason that I just noticed , Since WINE (Windows Application Loader) can't run while you click the USB , You can't open the Setup.exe file needed to install the Operating System , That means you can not install it at all if it is a .exe installer file , Then what can we do? Only other way is to make a partition with GParted , Put a partition , then install WINE , Then run your Windows Setup.exe file , Then Wine will load it up! Why not to open Setup.exe before you make a partition - Simple , It WONT WORK! I have tried , It says you need __ Amount of space and can be put on any partition , Yeah , Any partition NOT BEING USED Here is where I need your help! - I want to make a partition but they all show as locked when I open GParted , So How am I supposed to open them up? Get a hammer and tell HP my laptop didn't want to open its partitions? Nope , I need some help on how to unlock the partitions or what to do , Thank you in advance PS- If I could , I would put a bounty to this but I do not have enough reputation!

  • Ask a DNS server what sites it hosts - and how to possibly prevent misuse

    I've got a server which I host my company website as well as some of my clients. I noticed a domain which I created, but never used, was being attacked by a poke and hope hacker. I imagine that the hacker collected the domain from either hitting my DNS server and requesting what domains are hosted. So, in the interest of prevention and better server management, how would I ask my own DNS server (Linux CentOS 4) what sites are being hosted on it? Also, is there a way to prevent these types of attacks by hiding this information? I would assume that DNS servers would need to keep some information public, but I'm not sure if there is something that most hosts do to help prevent these bandwidth wasting poke and hope attacks.     What is the simplest way to implement a Modal(popup) MessageBox that allows a custom value to be entered and returned. In my case, a String. Maybe I am over thinking this but I figured I'd ask. I plan to just create a new Form. Add a label, a textbox, two buttons. Assign the textbox to a property and from my main form call a ShowDialog() on it. Will I be able to still access the property that way or should I somehow return the value? Is this a decent way of doing this?

    In the various videos on the AdMob integration, I've seen that only permission to access the internet is asked for: <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> Not that I am an expert in advertising, but wouldn't AdMob need the user's geographic location as well, so that they can serve location specific ads? Or avoid serving certain ads based on a location, like maybe not offering me a Big Mac if I am in India or not adverting a ham sandwich if I am in an Arab country? If AdMob needs those permissions, how do I ask for them?

    I am aware of this question which deals with the technical aspects of website construction, but I was unable to find any place with suggestions on knowledge you must obtain from a client before undergoing a project. As someone who freelances on the side, I think this could be incredibly useful. What important questions must one ask the client (and require an answer to) before undergoing a website? or, in other words, What must you know about the project before starting it? This can range from "When do I get paid?" to "How many pages will the site be?". I believe this is relevant to programming because you must know how to communicate with your client to get all the information necessary before you can begin programming. If not, downstream changes can put a serious delay on the project from things not hashed out beforehand. Thanks!
