  • Why does Windows 7 always automatically change the input or keyboard language?

    I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem. Currently, I am using the first option, two input languages.     It is possible to access any of the new shortcut keys found in Windows 8 via RDP, such as those in the accepted answer in What are the new shortcuts for Windows 8?, without having to redirect all Win key combinations through to the remote session. I am using both local and remote at the same time, and so would prefer alternate shortcuts for the remote session. Such as the basic ones listed at the Microsoft site here, and for example Alt+Home will return you to the Start screen. What about the more interesting shortcuts?

  • OS X Enclosing folder shortcut?

    This may have been asked before, but I'm wondering whether there is a shortcut for navigating to the enclosing folder in OS X (Snow Leopard)? I find navigating Finder particularly frustrating since it's hard navigating back to the enclosing folder (especially when you jump to a folder and realize the back button is disabled)... I'm hoping for something other than Command+Up, since that's the key combination I use to navigate Spaces.

  • Keyboard for programmers

    I'm trying to improve my working environment and I'm still searching for that perfect keyboard that practically types bug-free code all by itself. At the moment I'm using a Logitech Wave for my Windows need and an Apple Wireless Keyboard (the one without a numeric keypad) when doing OS X stuff. I'm quite happy with the Logitech Wave but I would prefer one without all the extra multimedia buttons. What I like most about the Apple Wireless Keyboard is that it is very similar to the Macbook's keyboard which for me makes it easier to write code when on my Macbook. What kind of keyboard would you recommend for going all out writing code until your fingers bleed? I have remapped the Caps Lock key to Ctrl which after a while feels really good, until I have to sit at another computer or when someone at work is going to show me something on my computer. Are there other little keyboard tricks that you use to get a little bit more productive? I have looked into switching to Dvorak but I have decided it's not for me.

  • Keyboard focus being stolen by Flash

    Performing a search, I noticed several questions dedicated to how to steal/trap the keyboard focus of the visitor. Considering this site is dedicated to programming that's not suprising. I was wondering if anyone can advise me on how to prevent this type of behavior. Losing keyboard focus to flash basically removes my browser's functionality until I use the mouse to click elsewhere (I use Mozilla Firefox). Anyone know of some kind of plugin or greasemonkey script that will prevent my keyboard focus from being stolen? Normal browser "shortcuts" are rendered useless by having to use the mouse to return keyboard focus to the browser. Edit: Reply to the post below, I do have flashblock / noscript and some other things. My issue is flash that I want to see/interact with stealing my focus. Basically looking for something I can toggle that will prevent flash from getting keyboard focus or a way to force my firefox keyboard commands to the browser

  • What key on a keyboard can be detected in the browser but won't show up in a text input?

    I know this one is going to sound weird but hear me out. I have a heart rate monitor that is hooked up like a keyboard to the computer. Each time the heart rate monitor detects a pulse it sends a key stroke. This keystroke is then detected by a web based game running in the browser. Currently I'm sending the following keystroke: (`) In the browser base game I'm detecting the following key fine and if when the user is on any data input screens the (`) character is ignored using a bit of JavaScript. The problem comes when I leave the browser and go back to using the Operating system in other ways the (`) starts appearing everywhere. So my question is: Is there a key that can be sent via the keyboard that is detectable in the browser but wont have any notable output on the screen if I switch to other applications. I'm kind of looking for a null key. A key that is detectable in the browser but has no effect to the browser or any other system application if pressed.

    I have a keyboard with some types of extra keys, such as multimedia (play, pause, stop ,..), turn off, and etc. some times it's annoying with a "exit button" just right beside arrows that accidentally presses, and programs gonna close, and some other similar problems.     Hello, I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed, Using Gnome 2.30.0 I'm using a Laptop, HP Pavilion dv9000 I've stumbled on responsiveness issues with my keyboard, Sometimes it's really obvious - the keyboard doesn't respond fast enough to my typing. Checked sticky keys and all that, it's all disabled of course. Now, I also checked on Windows to see if the problem is Hardware or something, and there are no responsiveness issues there... I'm thinking it's Gnome (or the X). Thanks.

    I have a Dell Optiplex 330 and have recently done a Windows XP repair. After it was finished I was able to use the computer just fine. Now I take it back to it's original location and plug in the OEM mouse and keyboard and they both work until Windows XP loads. As soon as windows loads the lights go out on both the keyboard and mouse.
